Languages Week Scotland šŸ“󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁓ó æ

This week is Languages Week Scotland 2023 where we celebrateĀ language learning and multilingualism in Scotland. This years theme is ā€œLanguages for a peaceful worldā€.

This morning the children came across some stories and we discovered they were in different languages. This got us chatting about what language we speak in and how not everyone speaks the same language.

ā€œWhat does this sayā€

ā€œThat is the title of the story, ā€œThe tortoise and the Hareā€ written in Mandarin, Chineseā€

ā€When I went to Italy I hear a different languageā€

ā€œCan you say any words in Italianā€

ā€Noā€

ā€œWhat language is the Elmer book in?ā€

ā€œThe Elmer book is in English and Polishā€

ā€œ how do you speak to someone if they donā€™t speak the same language?ā€

ā€œSay Helloā€

We used the internet to find out how to say Hello šŸ‘‹ Ā in other languages and wrote them down so we could practice how to say them.

The children were developing their mark making and writing Ā skills as they wanted to copy the words so they can practice.

We can now say Hello in different languages to welcome our friends who speak English as an additional language.

Big Garden Birdwatch

This week we have been preparing for the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch. We discussed why birds might come into the garden. ā€œItā€™s for seeds, we have some in my gardenā€. We then decided to to make our own bird feeders and hang them up on a branch.

The birds might need a drink as itā€™s been very cold and all the puddles are icy, so we made the birds their own drinking bowl ā€œLetā€™s put sticks near it so they can stand on themā€.

We then did some research by looking at some of the information sent to us by the RSPB which showed us lots of pictures of the birds that might visit our garden. Ā ā€œ I have seen some of these birds, thatā€™s a magpieā€.

It was very exciting watching for the birds. Some were far away so we used our binoculars. Then we could see some birds sitting in the trees and on top of the houses. We then thought about where else we could see the birds so we went for a bird watch walk.

We collected our bird watch recording sheet and set off. Ā I will hide in the trees like a bird watcher and see if the birds come near me we have to be very quiet šŸ¤«. Look I saw a blackbird letā€™s mark it on the sheet .

We managed to spot magpies, blackbirds, crows and blue tits. We all had a turn of recording the bird we had seen on our RSPB sheet, it was great fun!

The children are continuing to watch for birds in our garden and are independently recording them in our nature corner.
If you would like to join in this weekend the RSPB ask that you record the birds that visit your garden within 1 hour and then you can upload your results at rspb.org.uk/Birdwatch using the code BH35.

Everyone has worked very hard recording the information and have had great fun developing their skills of mark making, data collection, fine motor skills, health and well being and lots more. Happy bird watching everyone!

Helicopter stories šŸš

Today, the children had so much fun exploring their imagination and creating helicopter stories. Firstly, we worked together as a team suggesting ideas for our story outline. and we came up with a space theme šŸŒŽ

ā€œthe spaceship and the rocket are crashing into each otherā€

ā€itā€™s a person in the rocketā€

Next, we put our thinking caps on and decided on what roles we would act out and put our story into action!

The children all had different ideas for their helicopter stories, some of the suggestions were:

ā€œThe chocolate brownie stands up in spaceā€

ā€Iā€™m the rocketā€

ā€it exploded when it crashed at the doorā€

ā€the alien fell down with a Big Bangā€

After creating our story we illustrated our characters. Great work everyone šŸ‘

Hereā€™s a look at the childrenā€™s fab imaginative story!

Helicopter stories are a fun way to build literacy skills, develop emotional and social skills, explore and extend a child’s imagination and gain confidence especially when acting them out to their peers. Why don’t you come up with a theme at home and see how the story develops.

Chinese Dragons!

With the start of Chinese New Year being yesterday the children wanted to make dragon masks. The dragon is a legendary creature in Chinese mythology. The dragon is a symbol of power, strength and good luck! The children watched some clips of the dragons dancing in the streets and were very impressed with the size and how colourful they are. We had a chat about why the dragon is significant in China.

We had a look at a colourful dragon and got started making our own dragon masks. The children wanted to use lots of coloured tissue paper to look like the ā€˜dragons hairā€™. First we had to cut the paper into strips!

We used paper plates for our masks. We added lots of colour using pens. Some children wanted to draw faces and some just drew patterns.

We used glue to stick on lots of coloured paper. Ā Some children thought it would be good to add coloured feathers to their dragons!

ā€Mine has a fluffy beard!ā€

ā€My dragon has spiky hair with lots of colours in it!ā€

ā€œIā€™m making a rainbow dragon!ā€

ā€My dragon is loud and dancing!ā€

Once the children had designed their amazing dragons we stuck lollipop sticks on the back to make masks.

We had great fun dancing around the studio and listening to music pretending to be Chinese Dragons! Ā I think you will agree the children at Cartmill have been very creative today and enjoyed learning about Chinese culture.

Welcome to our story corner šŸ§ø šŸ“š

We have been very busy in the home room today, setting up a cosy book corner. The children started off by choosing their favourite stories from our library cupboard, selecting a variety of books that sparked their imagination.

ā€œThe scary shark looks like this.ā€

ā€I have this one at home, itā€™s my favourite.ā€

We then got started on choosing puppets for our story corner.

ā€Letā€™s have incy wincyā€

ā€I like this one, it has little red riding hood and the wolfā€

We sang some of the childrenā€™s favourite nursery rhymes and then choose our rhyme of the week, which was wind the bobbin up šŸ§µ.

ā€Wind the bobbin up is my favouriteā€

ā€I like when we sing it really fastā€

We then had lots of fun reading stories, singing and playing with the puppets in our new area. Well done to the children for helping set it up, great job!

Exploring our Senses

This week in the discovery room we have taken on the role of scientists and started exploring our senses.Ā  Following on from our experiments on how sound travels and using our sense of hearing. Today we explored our sense of smell!

First we had discussions about the 5 senses, focusing on our sense of smell.Ā  The children talked about what we use to smell and even what we could smell around us. Bellow are some comments.

ā€œWe use my nose to smellā€

ā€œMy nose is very good at smellingā€

ā€œI smell soap on my handsā€

ā€œIā€™m smell my perfume, itā€™s my mummyā€™s favouriteā€

Next we set up our learning activity.Ā  Providing 8 tubs containing orange, banana, cucumber, coffee, garlic, mint, cinnamon and ginger. These were accompanied by matching picture cards with the written text.

Next I invited the children to start exploring the tubs using their sense of smell and asking if they could identify any of them. Some of the smells were familiar and some were new scents. We made our productions on what we thought may be in the tubs and match them to the picture cards. Once they were all matched we looked inside to see if we were correct.Ā  Below are some of the comment during the activity.

ā€œI smelled orange and bananaā€

ā€œI have never smelled ginger beforeā€

ā€œI smelled cucumberā€

ā€œThe garlic is very smellyā€

ā€œI smelled coffee, mummy smells of coffee sometimesā€

As some of the scents were new to us we had matched some of them to the wrong cards.Ā  Now we had seen them all and we were more familiar with the items in the tubs we tried the activity again. Everyone worked together as a team to smell and share what they thought it may be. Having discussing and debates about what they thought could be in each tub. Working together this time they matched all the correct tubs to the picture cards.

Well done little scientists!

I wonder what we will explore next?

Loose parts fun šŸ¤©

Today the children have enjoyed being creative in the loose parts area. We explored different patterns including numbersā€¦

Shapesā€¦

and some letters too…

ā€œI want to do a S. Thatā€™s in my nameā€

ā€œThe pipe cleaners will work, because theyā€™re straight lines.ā€

Some children even loved making something completely different all together, like the Scotland flag!

ā€œthe peg is for the wee stick on the flag. How can I do the triangles for the inside? I know, why donā€™t I squish the pipe cleaners?ā€

The children loved being creative with their patterns, and showed really great problem solving skills when choosing their materials. They were able to recognise patterns that included straight lines as well as more curved lines, and choose their loose parts to explore this. Great work everyone!
What can you make out of loose parts at home? We would love to see your ideas.

The tinker table is open for 2023

The boys were making a big super bat motorbike this morning and they decided to make a smaller version at the tinker table.

They drew up some plansā€¦..drawings of what they wanted to make and how they were going to make it.

They choose the materials they needed.

They used hammers, nails, g-clamps, spirit levels glue and a variety of other materials.

They were very careful when using the hammer and recalled our safety rules before starting.

They decorated their fabulous models using their own designs and creativity.

Everyone showed a high level of concentration and level of engagement, developing their self help skills and independence.

Look forward to all their exciting designs coming home soon šŸ˜

Santa visits Cart Mill!

Today at Cart Mill we got to wear our pyjamas to nursery! All the children loved showing off their cosy warm pyjamas.

We watched a short video of Santa outside Cart Mill which got the children very excited! Some of the children heard bells ringing and spotted Santa in our garden! He had arrived at nursery to see us all!

The children went in groups to see Santa and they all got a gift and their photo taken! Santa was so happy to meet such lovely, polite children!

After the excitement of seeing Santa we had some chilled time and got comfy with cushions and blankets on the rug and watched some Christmas Mickey Mouse!

We then had plenty of energy for some Christmas dancing! We copied the elves on the board and made up our own unique dance moves!

What a great fun day we all had, getting in the festive spirit. We are all so excited to share our wonderful singing with you at our concert tomorrow.

Bookbug around the Christmas tree šŸŽ„šŸŽ„šŸŽ„

Today Bookbug joined us around the Christmas tree for some festive songs and stories.

We passed Bookbug and toy Santa round the circle so all our friends could have a hug and a squeeze šŸ‘

We bounced Bookbug and Santa as high as we could and that made us all giggle!

We had a special request for the story ā€˜Twas the night before Christmasā€™ which made us all very excited šŸ˜

We wished all our friends a ā€˜Merry Christmasā€™ which may or may not have been a practice for next week šŸ¤«

When it comes I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and look forward to seeing you all in 2023 šŸ„°
