Caring for our garden

Today in the Cart Mill garden Derek had a couple of helpers to check in on our seeds and see how they were coming along.  Take a look at some of our seedings starting to sprout up.

We looked at the seed trays and noticed that some of the pots had more than one seed growing in it. We decided to separate these so they would have more space to grow.

We gathered everything we needed compost, seed trays and our gardening tools. Using a stick we were very careful and removed the seedling. They were very fragile so we were super careful when we separated them.

We looked at the seedling and learned about the different parts. We discussed the stem, the leaves and one of the children identified the roots.

We filled the new trays with compost ready to plant one seeding in each space. Being super careful not to break the seeding we made a hole and planted them in their new homes.

“They will get big roots now”

“They will have more space”

Once we had planned the seeds in their new homes we watered them and placed in indoors so they are warm and ready to grow.

Ball play

This morning in the garden we have been practising our balls skills.

We started by setting up the baskets in the tyres and playing some basketball. We tried throwing the ball in to the basket and also bouncing it in.

We had great fun trying but some of us found this a little tricky so we decided to practise our throwing skills a bit more.

We practised throwing and catching and also bouncing and catching.  We learned that we need to make sure the other person is ready to catch before throwing and we need to have hands out and keep our eyes on the ball to catch it.

After this we put our skills to use and played cooperatively by making a circle and passing the ball to the person next to us.

We learned that we should throw under arm when passing to a person and we need to alter how hard we throw depending on how far away the other person is.

Firework Splat Painting!

Today In the garden we created some firework pictures in preparation for bonfire night this weekend.

The children selected some paint and resources that they could spray and splat. We picked a selection of different spray bottles and pipettes to spray at the large plastic sheet and create our firework picture.

The spray bottles and pipettes helped us to develop our fine motor skills. We demonstrated good skill when filling them up and spaying them.

We then used the paint and sponges to throw the paint at the ground to make splats that resembled fireworks. This was a good way to get our bodies moving and develop our gross motor skills while being creative.


While we were painting we talking about fireworks and how we can stay safe.  These are some of the children’s comments. 😊

“You don’t touch the fire”

“Fireworks and very hot so you need to stay away”

“They go in the sky”

“Only adults do the fireworks”

There’s no stopping us….

It may have been freezing rain, intermittent hail stones and blowing a hoolie but the children at Cart Mill weren’t going to let that stop them playing outdoors!

We started by having a chat about how to keep warm while playing outdoors and discussed what games we would like to play. The children asked to play banana tig and toilet tig.


If the tigger catches you in banana tig you have to put your hands above your head like a banana skin and you cannot move until a friend ‘peels’ the banana.


If the tigger catches you during toilet tig you have to stand with your arm out and cannot move until a friend ‘ flushes’ the toilet.

These types of games encourage turn taking and co-operation between the children.

The children then asked to play hide and seek and got very creative with their hiding places!

We had a great time keeping ourselves active during Storm Dudley.

Lots of fun in the garden!

Today the children had great fun in the garden. They set up the guttering on our new stands and loved rolling balls of different sizes down the slopes. The aim was to catch the balls in the basket at the bottom!

The children showed great problem solving skills whilst developing their gross motor skills stretching, reaching and chasing the balls. They were very excited when the balls landed in the basket.

Before home time the children enjoyed having  fun out on the bikes. They loved zooming around the garden and were very excited that it was getting dark! This further develops their gross motor skills, balance and coordination.

Lots of fun and fresh air today and the children showed great teamwork and amazing turn taking in the garden!

Bubbles bubbles and more bubbles

At Cart Mill we have been having lots of fun with bubbles.

“How do you make giant bubbles”

Some of the children wanted to make giant bubbles. So we decided to experiment to see what we could use to make giant bubbles.

“how about that hola hoop?”

We mixed some water and washing up liquid and used our hola hoop, but our bubbles just kept popping.

“I think we are going to have to look up a special recipe.”

We used the internet to find a recipe to make giant bubbles. We also watched some video’s of The amazing bubble man. The children were fascinated with the bubble tricks Louis Pearl created.

We made up our recipe and started experimenting trying out different techniques to creating some amazing bubbles.
