We have been learning about different styles of art while developing our gross motor mark making skills and this morning we have been looking at the work of the artist Kandinsky. We discussed how the circles could have been created and the different colours he used. We noticed each adjacent circle was a different colour. Then we started creating our own using the mini mops and a selection of colours.
“It’s like a rainbow Easter egg!”
“It looks like a tornado. You’re going to get sucked in to it!”
Then we decided to try a different method and use brushes to make smaller circles.
“Look at all my spirals.”
Absolutely amazing pieces of art created and some good messy fun!
Today in the Studio the children were inspired to be creative by some giant boxes kindly donated by one of our parents.
They decided to build a house complete with a back and front garden and even a chimney. The children worked well together planning how their house should look.
There was a lot of chat about what everyone had in their house and what they could use in the centre to replicate the items. Some of their ideas included;
“ look I have made the key to get into the house, I used a cotton bud and tissue paper” “I think I will make a table to have my dinner at” “ I think there should be two doors at the front “ “ The garden should have rainbow grass” “I’m going to make the grass with different colours of tissue paper” “ I want to make a dinosaur room for my stegosaurus” I think it’s snowing at our house” I have made a barricade to keep everyone in the back garden”

The children used team work and exercised their gross motor skills to move the big boxes to where they wanted them and working together, they were able to use their problem solving skills to keep the roof up.” Let’s put these supports into stop it falling down”
The children loved using their imagination to make their house and spent many hours playing in it. Great team work everybody, well done!
It’s been such a busy week at Cart Mill. We are so looking forward to our holiday weekend! What better way to end the week than having a fun day!
First of all we decided to have an Easter Egg hunt to make sure everyone has had an egg to take home. The eggs were tricky to find, but with a bit of teamwork and encouraging each other, we managed to find them all!
Next it was time to practice our directions and positional language on our bikes! We were able to go forwards and backwards, stop and start, fast and slow, and race each other round our track. We drew our own arrows and reminded each other to follow them so that we didn’t have any crashes!
We created our own obstacle course and carried out our own risk assessments to decide how many crates we would feel safe to jump from.
Then it was time to see who could roll the cable reels the furthest!
We were exhausted after using up all of our energy outside so it was time for some Peter Rabbit and some popcorn and fruit for snack.

Yesterday the children enjoyed their own mini games which started them talking about various sports that they all take part in. Running races, jumping, bike racing, tennis, basketball, gymnastics, swimming, football, golf to name a few.
This led to talk about the Olympics being held over the next couple of weeks in Tokyo, Japan. Some children asked what the Olympics were. Through discussions with staff, they learned that the Olympics were held every 4 years with people from countries all over the world taking part in lots of different sports to win medals for their country.
The children watched some of the Opening Ceremony from London 2012 with great interest and tried to guess the countries from their flags, as well as watching the ceremony where the medals are awarded.

After their mini games some of the children asked if they could make their own little medals. They found some gold, silver and a bronze coloured shiny paper and some ribbon. They glued the shiny paper onto some card, cut out a circle and attached some ribbon.

Who knows we may have a future olympian here at Cartmill.
