This week in P4a

This week we are monitoring and recording the growth of the cress seeds we planted last week.

Today we looked at the life cycle of a plant as well as discussing the germination process.  We then worked a little bit of magic and initiated the germination process ourselves. We filled a plant pot with compost, popped in a sweet pea seed, covered it over gently with more compost, gave it a  little water and put it in a warm place. We will be keeping a close eye on our seeds and looking out for signs of growth over the coming weeks.  Keep an eye out for some photo’s to follow.  When we have nice, healthy, established plants, each child can bring their sweet pea plant home.

This week our spellings are:

In maths we have been looking at the symbols for:  greater than > less than < and equal to = and using these symbols to make some equations correct.

We will be moving on to looking at what function  machines are and how they affect a given number.  e.g. If my function machine multiplies everything I put into it by four, what numbers will I get if I put  6, 3, 9 and 8 into it?

Here’s a fun code cracking worksheet you could try: 01b – Function Machines – What is the secret code (Worksheet)

Cress Seeds – P6/5

Our cress seeds grew quickly with plenty light and water. We are bringing them home this week to use in the kitchen. The yoghurt pots could then be re-used to grow something else or recycled. 🥬🥗

Sunflowers in P2/1

This week in P2/1 we’ve been learning about sunflowers – we planted our own, drew very detailed black pen pictures and wrote a descriptive piece about their life cycle. We also did a sunflower collage in art that we’ve put up in the corridor.

This morning we planted some lettuce in the school garden and are keeping a close eye on the radish that we’ve already planted. Our mangetout seeds have germinated in the windows and the runner beans will shortly be coming home for the children to continue growing there.

This week we’ve also learned the ‘ie’ sound, as in tie, pie and fries.  In numeracy we’re coming to the end of our work on money, this week focusing on subtraction. We’re continuing our problem solving, this week using our communication skills to decide how to sort shapes.

In health and wellbeing we’ve been talking a lot about how things are constantly changing and while some change is expected, like moving house, some isn’t, like the coronavirus. We used the seasons as a starting point and then in circle time thought about what else is changing – we realised how much we are all changing – from height to hair to wobbly teeth to our intelligence!

Review of Week 14/5/21

We have completed our Assessment Writing on Children Should  Be Paid Pocket Money to do Chores.   Some people found it tricky because they could not think of ideas.  We had to use alliteration, statistics and rhetorical questions to persuade.

In numeracy we have continued to work on decimals;  adding and subtracting mentally and using the standard written method.  Annabelle prefers the written method and Ben M and Jamie prefer the mental method.

Mea enjoyed the mindfulness colouring this week.  We did some breathing mindfulness activities as well.

In PE we played rounders and cricket.

We have planned our arguments for debates and two debates took place one on Electric Cars Are Better than Petrol Cars and Scientific Testing on Animals Should be Banned.

We looked at the the affects of smoking tobacco and cannabis this week.

Comment on what you have learned or what you have enjoyed.
