Primary 2 – 11.05.20

Good morning Primary 2,

We hope you all had a lovely and restful weekend. Did anyone do anything nice to celebrate VE day on Friday?

We have included this week’s Learning Grids for you to remind you of the possible activities you could do at home. Remember, although we give lots of ideas there should be plenty time for rest and relaxation. You are all doing such a good job staying home, staying safe and protecting the NHS and this is the main thing. Any learning you do at home is a bonus and is much appreciated in this difficult time.

This week in social studies we are beginning to look at Antarctica. Do you know anything about Antarctica before you start learning more? Note down what you do know and over the week find out if you were right or wrong!

You have also been asked to create a healthy sandwich. We are keen to see what you put into your sandwich and please put some photos of your ‘delicious’ creation on your Learning Journal! There is a fabulous story about a disgusting sandwich – it is one of our favourites. If you don’t have this book you can listen to it on YouTube. Click this link to listen – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ca2DJZ79NJ4

You might even want to use this story to do your ‘move and dance’ to as part of this week’s Health and Wellbeing. See the grid for more information!

You may have had an email or have seen on our new app that we have registered for ‘Travel to Tokyo’. Although the Olympics has been postponed we can still get active and stay connected. All you have to do is follow the simple instructions attached in pdf format below and log any activity you and your family do. It doesn’t matter if it is a 5 minute walk or a half hour Joe Wicks. Every little counts and there are prizes up for grabs! Miss Rafferty and Miss Pringle will certainly be taking part!

Did you make our gallery last week? We have been selecting a few photos from the Learning Journal updates to share on the school blog for everyone to see! Keep uploading and you could feature on Friday.

Stay safe,

Miss Pringle and Miss Rafferty

Good morning boys and girls and welcome to a new week!
We hope that you all had a nice weekend and managed to spend some time with your family having fun. What was the favourite thing that you did? All 3 teachers had a busy weekend in their kitchens! Miss Daun tried a new recipe from her cook book, and both Miss Cunningham and Miss Christy made cookies!

This week we will be revising a sound we have looked at before… ck. It is always helpful to go back to sounds we have learned previously to make sure we fully understand them. As in previous weeks, your reading book and associated activities will be sent in a separate email. Here are the literacy activities for this week:

Primary 1 Home Learning 08.05.20

Good morning Primary 1

Happy Friday! We hope you have had a fantastic week learning from home and you’ve managed to get outside in the sunshine for some fresh air with your family this week. Today is a very special day as it is the 75th anniversary of the end of World War 2. We call this day ‘VE day’ which stands for Victory in Europe. We celebrate this day every year as it marks the end of the war in Europe. On May 8th, 1945, former Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced that Germany had finally surrendered and the fighting across Europe had finished. At the end of the war in 1945 people across the country put up flags, banners and there were streamers everywhere. There were parties, fireworks, and some people wore red, white and blue rosettes. People hugged, sang songs and danced. It was a very happy time!

If you would like some more information about why we celebrate VE day, check out this child friendly video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpaA_tZJV00

We thought it would be fun for you today to get creative and host your own celebration for VE day. You could host your own tea party for some of your teddy bears, dolls or action figures. You could bake cupcakes for the occasion and ice on British flags, create your own UK flag to wave or dress up your toys. You could listen to some music and dance too! We would love to see some of your fun creations on the Learning Journals. We love seeing all of the activities you are getting up to at home. Thank you for continuing to share all of your work with us.

We hope you are all safe, well and happy and that we get to see you all soon.

Have a lovely weekend!

Primary 3 Friday 8th May 2020

Good morning Primary 3.

Today is a special day indeed. Does anyone know why?

No, not just because it is Free Time Friday day, it’s because it is VE Day!

VE stands for Victory in Europe and this day is celebrated and remembered. On 8 May 1945, Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio at 3pm that the war in Europe had come to an end, following Germany’s surrender the day before. It is important to remember that the war was sill being fought on this day in other areas of the world and lots of the soldiers were still being held as prisoners of war elsewhere as well. To mark VE Day, there is a 1 minute silence at 11am. Lots of online things are happening to celebreate VE Day today. Let us know if you do anything with your family.

If you want to find out more about VE Day have a look here on Newsround: https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/48201749

Your Mental Maths for today is below. You can choose which one you wish to complete. I will post answers at the end of today for you to check. Remember to try to beat your time taken to complete them accurately from last week.

Mrs Fox has given us some ideas to continue your Art in the link below. Since the weather has been so nice, why not try some of the outdoor activities and let us know how you get on!

Indoor and Outdoor Activity Sheet

This week our Topic Challenge is about living in Space. Tim Peake was the first official British astronaut to walk in space in 2016 and so part of your challenge is to find out all about him. The main part of your challenge is to design your own livable space habitat. Remember our needs and wants challenge? Think about what you would need to survive and how you might get it/ make it/ grow it in space. Design your space habitat and then if you have time and you have asked permission you could try building a model. The challenge will also be posted in the Interdisciplinary folder in Teams.

Here are some links to websites that might help you with some ideas:

Have a wonderful weekend everyone! Well done for your continued hard work.

Miss Smith and Mr Woodward.

Happy VE day Primary 2!

We hope you are successfully making your way through the learning grids. Remember just do what you can!

P.E

Have you still been doing P.E with Joe Wicks? He has recently had an operation on his hand so his wife has kindly been stepping in for him. Do you think she makes a good teaching assistant? We think she does, she has been doing so well! Why don’t you try Friday’s workout today………I’m sure it’s fancy dress!

Free Time Friday

Today is Friday after all so make sure you take some time out of your learning to play. You have earned it. Have a super weekend Primary 2 and we look forward to speaking to you all on Monday!

PE Daily Challenge

Good Afternoon everyone.  I hope you are all doing well and keeping active at home. Last week I told you about the West Lothian Primary PE Network daily challenges on Twitter  and here is today’s challenge. Think you might recognise the challenger!

Can anyone beat me?   Are the best in your house?

Let me know how you get on.

Primary 1 7.5.20

Good Morning Primary 1s!
We hope that you are all well! What a beautiful day we had yesterday, we hope that you managed to get outside and have some fun. The teachers all loved getting outside after work yesterday, Miss Christy went for a long cycle in the countryside, Miss Daun went for a run once it had cooled down a bit and Miss Cunningham went for a lovely walk.
Yesterday, we posted some new learning grids for you to work through. Try to do at least 3 of these activities today at some point and remember to post photos of your super work on the Learning Journals. It is so lovely seeing your work every day!
Before we moved to online learning we had started our ‘Fairyland’ topic. As always, we have created a SWAY to show this learning and we have added in a few photos from your work at home too! The link to the SWAY will be posted in your Learning Journal later this morning. Have a look to see if you can spot yourself in any of the photos!

The Rights Respecting School Article of the week is Article 7, the right to a name and nationality. Why don’t you have a discussion about why you chose the name for your child and maybe other names you had been considering? Talk about nationalities, about the country you come from and how you identify with that nation. The slide below gives some ideas of other activities you might want to try…

I particularly like the ‘identity hand’ task. Draw around your hand and write your name, date of birth, home country and 2 adults who help you on the fingers, then draw the flag of where you call home on the palm. We would love to see some of your hand prints on the Learning Journals.
The video link is

It takes you to a story called ‘The name jar’. This is a story about a Korean girl who is learning about her name and identity as she moves to a new country. After watching the video talk about

– Why does the girl want to change her name?
– How do you think she feels when people make fun of her name?
– What would you do if you saw someone making fun of someone else’s name?
– What name does she end up with?

Remember, the activities we post daily on the blog are optional extras, please feel no pressure to complete them!
We hope that you have a lovely day!

Reading today is a written task. There are two in the Teams assignments because we had a holiday, however, posted below is just one of the activities so that we don’t take up too much room on the Blog. Please message if you can’t access Teams and would like the other one to go with your book.

Primary 3 Wednesday 6th May 2020

Good morning Primary 3 and welcome back! Please remember there is a class check-in at 1:30pm for anyone who is available to join. Have a think in advance of something you have been proud of learning during the time the schools have been closed.

Well done to everyone who found out Hubble’s birthday! You were right, it was on the 24th April and he is 30 this year! We hope the challenge is going well if you have decided to complete it.

Please can we take this moment to reiterate that although there are lots of activities given each day, as well as Education City and our continued home learning grid, the expectation is not for every single task to be completed and handed in. We are providing the work, and should it fit in with your home/working life, that’s a bonus. However, it is up to you what you believe is manageable for your situation. We are all new to this and you should do what works for you.

The main thing we would love to see completed each day is the establishment of a routine, and to ensure everyone in your household is safe, happy and well. If that happens, the learning will naturally happen from there anyway. Thank you all for your continued efforts, we really do appreciate how difficult this situation could be.

Thank you,

Mr Woodward and Miss Smith.

If it fits with your day, the work that can be completed today is below:

Today we are looking at perimeter of 2D shapes. Perimeter is the length of all the sides of a shape added together. There will be an instructional video put up on Teams in the Numeracy/ Maths folders to explain perimeter as well as a Shape section on Education City with activities and learning videos.

Choose your own challenge level for completing the perimeter task:

Mild

perimeter-1

Spicy

perimeter-2

Hot

Primary 2 – Home Learning 6.5.20

Bonjour Primary 2!
We hope you have had a lovely, long weekend and have been able to get out and enjoy some sunshine. Attached below is a new grid for learning Literacy, Numeracy and Across the Curriculum for the next 2 weeks. However, we know that this is only a short week because of the holiday so you will not complete as many tasks. We are delighted to see some of you uploading photos to your Learner’s Journal to share your learning – thank you and keep up the good work! Please also remember to take time for play, rest, fun and family activities. The learning grids are a guide and can be adapted to suit your child’s needs and your individual family circumstances.
For Woody, Pumba, Buzz and Simba groups – you will be looking at play scripts this week. Here is the short playscript mentioned on the learning grid for you to read and maybe even act out with members of your family!
You may also enjoy watching a pantomime to see a play in action. What are the characters in it? What is the setting and can you come up with some of the stage directions that may be used?
Also, on the Learning Across the Curriculum grid there is an experiment to try. Here are the details:
If you are in need of a brain break at any point – here are some of your favourites from school. I am sure they will make someone in your family giggle!
Please don’t hesitate to ask any questions either through this blog or by sending a message through Learner’s Journals.
Thank you for continuing support,
Mrs Oliver and Miss Rafferty

Primary 1 6.5.20

Welcome back Primary 1s!

We hope you had a lovely long weekend. The sun has certainly been out. What did you get up to? It was my birthday yesterday so I went on a lovely evening walk and saw a squirrel run across the path in front of me. It was very cute! Miss Christy went on her daily walks and she has done lots of sewing projects too. She sewed different coloured material together to create baskets to help organise her baking cupboard. Miss Daun also went on local walks, played board games and did some yoga. Have you tried any yoga at home yet?

Can you believe it is May already? You are all doing so well with your learning from home. We have an exciting week ahead of us. I have attached the grids and resources for this week. We hope you enjoy doing the tasks if you are able to and we can’t wait to hear how you get on.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Setting Routines During School Closure

One of the most important and helpful things you can do with your child during the current school closure is to set routines for learning times, exercise times, family times, meal times and fun times. This video is from the Education Endowment Foundation, whose sole function is to research what works in education to give children the best possible chances of succeeding. Why not watch it and discuss it with your child/ren and see how your daily routine compares? If you don’t yet have a daily routine, then this is a good place to start:

Here is the link to the checklist shown in the video:

Primary 3 Friday 1st May 2020

Good morning boys and girls! Well, it is now May! Can anyone remember how to say “the first” in French? Let’s see who remembers and can tell us!

Today is Friday, so that means you have to make sure you get some free time today!  We have a special job for you today. Your special job is to make sure all of the adults at home have some free time to themselves today, because they have been working just as hard as you this week! Especially helping us with our class chats on Wednesday! Can you do that!?

Today we have a little Friday challenge to keep you busy next week. It is about the Hubble space telescope and we hope you enjoy learning about it. It was Hubble’s birthday last week. Can anyone find out what age Hubble is? There are a few links for you to investigate to help you with your research.

Link to Pdf and screenshot of challenge:

Critical Skills Challenge Hubble

We also have a little mental Maths test for you to complete. I will upload the answers later on in the day for you to check your work. You can choose whether to do Number 2 or Number 16 this week.

Please remember it is a holiday for you next Monday and Tuesday, so there will be no new work posted for you on these days. If you are treating it like a normal day, there are plenty of activities for you to work on, in your learning grid and on Education City.

We will speak to you again on Wednesday, where we will have another class check-in online at 1:30pm. If you are free it would be lovely to welcome you and hear your news. Remember to join with microphones and videos off. We are really looking forward to it!

Thank you all for such a productive week and we hope you all have a fantastic weekend.

Mr Woodward and Miss Smith

Primary 1 – Home Learning 01.05.20

Bonjour Primary 1! Happy Vendredi!

It’s almost the weekend and we hope you have had another lovely week of learning at home. Please feel free to finish off any activities left on the home learning grids this morning as we will be posting new grids on Wednesday. If you fancy getting active this morning and while having some ‘Fun Family Friday’ time then you could invent your own assault course in your garden! You could use hoops, balls, skipping ropes, toys or any other resources you have to hand! You could even draw some activities outside with chalk. Alternatively you could create your own fitness circuit for example: star jumps, bunny hops, push ups, running and high knees. Get creative! Check out this fun assault course that the organiser of Glack Attack created in their garden:

https://www.eveningexpress.co.uk/fp/news/local/video-glack-attack-organiser-creates-kids-assault-course-in-his-aberdeen-garden/

There are lots of other great resources to keep fit indoors if you are unable to get outside! You could try building your body and mind with Jack Hartmann: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzbTmBIpGdQ

Some other fun activities to help you stay fit indoors:

  • Joe Wicks (The Body Coach) streams live P.E. sessions on his YouTube channel at 9am daily: https://www.youtube.com/user/thebodycoach1
  • You can sign up for a GoNoodle account for for free which has lots of physical activities: gonoodle.com
  • Sing and dance along to some Tumble Tots, The Learning Station or Sticky Kids videos on YouTube
  • Try some cosmic yoga: cosmickidsyoga.com

We hope you enjoy your long weekend at home with your family. We are missing you all very much and hope we will get to see you all soon!

Primary 1 – Home Learning 30.04.20

Good morning Primary 1! Happy Jeudi!

This week we have been focusing on the fairy tale story ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and for our writing activity we were looking at the story from the wolf’s perspective. Did anyone manage to create a fun alternative ending to the story? We would love to see some examples of your work on the learning journals! This morning we would like to challenge you to create your own mask for the big bad wolf to add to your story. Perhaps you could even act out your story while wearing the wolf mask!

For this activity you will need:

  • a paper plate
  • white, black and brown card (or tissue paper)
  • glue
  • scissors
  • stapler
  • string

Instructions to create your own big bad wolf mask:

First cut your brown tissue paper (or card) into small squares (this is great for practicing your cutting skills!)
Take your paper plate and put a good amount of glue all over it. Place the tissue paper on top of the glue, until the paper plate is completely covered.
Cut out circles for the eyes – two large white circles and two smaller black circles for the pupils (or alternatively you could ask an adult to cut out eye holes so you can see when you wear your mask!)

Then cut out two pointy ears using brown card.

Next cut out your long snout using brown card and add a small black circle for the nose at the end.

Then add some sharp teeth by cutting out rectangles out of white card.

Glue all of the facial features onto your wolf.
Finally, staple some string to your wolf mask, making sure that the length of the string will fit snugly around your head.
Then display proudly!

If you would like more information on how to create the mask, you can access Glued to My Craft’s blog here:

Happy Thursday Primary 2!

We hope you are successfully making your way through the learning grids. Remember you must try to complete one literacy task, one numeracy task and an across the curriculum task each day.

Why don’t you start your morning off with one of our favourite Just Dance- Gummy Bear. We know you know all the moves and words so why don’t you show your family.

How about listening to a story from David Walliams:

https://www.worldofdavidwalliams.com/elevenses-catch-up/

On Tuesday we posted about the RRS article 12. Have any of you managed to complete any of the activities? If so please post pictures of the work in Learning Journals. We need to keep all our evidence of work to allow us to get our next award.

The weather for the next couple of days is not looking great, in fact we think it might be raining. Why don’t you sit by a rainy window and write a short story about what you can see and hear from the window. There is a word mat below to help you with some key words like might appear in your story.

Finally remember bbc bitesize are posting 3 lessons a day which cover lots of areas in the curriculum. The one below is a Science lesson about materials. Why don’t you give it a go!

We hope you have a lovely day and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.
