Maths Homework – Term 2

In class we are focusing on recalling our x table facts. We will have a timed challenge on a Monday and Friday. The aim will be to beat our time. Over the week you should practice your x table facts.

You have a log-in for Study Ladder and there are activities assigned to you. We will be able to track the activities you complete as well as your accuracy.

https://www.studyladder.co.uk/

You can also use other methods for working on your recall. Get an adult to test you; create a game; recite them out loud or use online games.

Leave a comment on here if you have a really helpful game or activity which others may find useful.

Welcome back Primary 1!

The children have enjoyed a busy first week back and have been learning about the and l sound.

For o the children made an octopus. The children developed their cutting skills as they cut out a circle for the body, covered it in little os and added eight tentacles!

We took advantage of the lovely autumn leaves and drew detailed leaf pictures to go with our sound.

The children have also been creating their own  characters using leaves from the ground. Have a look at our wonderful display!

Finally, all the children are invited to join us for a Halloween party on Friday 1st November from 8.45-12.50. The children can dress up if they wish and should be ready for some spooky fun!

In class this term we are learning about the country of Japan and comparing it to life in Scotland. At home we would like you to choose another world country, carry out some research and then present your findings. You must cover at least 3 topic areas for your chosen country.

Possible research topics:
-Food
-Religion/Festivals
-Landscape
-Traditional clothing
-Education
-Government/Leadership
-Key historical events
-Transport.
Feel free to find out about other aspects of the country too.

You can choose how you present your information. (power point, poster, leaflet, booklet, video recording, model etc.) If you need any resources from school, please ask.
We are looking for you to present your information in a clear way and we will also expect a note of the information sources you used. (Book titles and authors, websites etc)

Your project should be completed by Monday 9th of December. We will be sharing our learning with other classes in the school that week.

Enjoy!

What do we think we already know?

The Sun is boiling hot. It has lava or something in it and gas.

The Sun is made of gas and fire.

Day and night are the same length of hours.

There are 12 months in a year.

The Moon is a giant lump of rock.

The Moon has bumps called craters.

The stars, Sun and Moon are powerful.

There are 7 days in a week.

Autumn is a warning about Winter and we harvest all our food.

ELC Stay and Play

In the last week before the holidays we had stay and play sessions where we welcomed parents and carers in to share our ELC learning and experiences.

A huge thank you to all who joined us, the children loved having you in to play!

This is a great opportunity for you to share your childs learning with them, speak to the ELC staff, meet other parents/carers and have a look at their folder and displays in ELC.

We do these stay and play sessions termly so keep an eye out on the board for the next days.

At the moment we are also looking for some parent/carer feedback using our “feedback tree” in the cloakroom – Please add any thoughts or suggestions onto a wooden spoon and hang it on a branch! We love hearing your feedback.

Maths problem solving

We had fun today using our addition skills to solve a problem. Some people said it was tricky but a little challenge helps us learn.

Here is the puzzle:

Chico’s cards are all different.

There is a number from 1 to 8 on each.

Chico has chosen four cards that add up to 20. What are they?

There are 7 possibilities. Try to find them all.

Most pairs found it helpful to use playing cards. They listed their answers e.g. 7 + 3 + 6 + 4. We soon discovered that our bonds to 10 helped us. Some pairs were fast to use two cards to make 11 then two to make 9.

We had to check that we hadn’t repeated a solution e.g. 6 + 4 + 7 + 3 is the same as 7 + 4 + 3 + 6

Try our problem. Good luck.

Week beginning 22/10/19

Primary 6B have came back to school enthusiastic and ready to learn after having a lovely October break.

Waiting for Charlie and Murray were letters from the author they had written to in Primary 5.   David Baddiel had written back much to the boys’ excitement.

Charlie said that he was really excited when he saw the letter and he liked David Baddiel’s comment at the end saying that he gets his ideas from his imagination and from his son.

Teddy bear adventure

We had an amazing trip to Dawyck gardens and our teddy bears got up to mischief in the yurt with Edward Bear when we were learning about SWAF.

SWAF is what animals need to survive. Shelter, Water,Air and Food.

Here we are making little islands that have SWAF and everything that animals need to survive.
