Sound Waves

Today we learned about how sound travels. We did this through a range of experiments and discussions.

Our favourite was making a jelly baby sound wave! We explored how the shape and speed of the wave was affected by how much energy was put into it.

Block 1 Homework

Primary 6A and Primary B shared their Block 1 homework this afternoon.

  • upcycling ideas were great
  • super onomatopoeia posters were made
  • number games and big number posters and power points were created
  • identifying shapes in the outside world
  • and more

Here is a small selection

2D and 3D shape

Primary 6B were exploring different types of triangles.

Equilateral Triangles;  all three sides equal, all 3 angles equal and no parallel or perpendicular  lines.

Isosceles Triangles; two sides are equal and two angles are equal.

Right Angle Triangle;  one angle is 90 degrees and  has perpendicular lines.

Scalene Triangle;  all 3 sides and angles are different.

We have also been looking at the nets of 3D shapes.

We made cubes with 6 squares.

We made cuboids with four rectangles and two squares.

We made triangular prisms with three rectangles and two triangles.

We made square based pyramids with one square and four triangles.

We made triangular based pyramids with 4 triangles.

We made regular dodecahedrons  with 12 pentagons.

We made octahedrons with eight triangles.

My Dalguise Recount
Maisie Mowat

On September 16th 2019 Kingsland primary sevens went to Dalguise which is a school camp where you do loads of really cool activities like abseiling and canoeing. In this recount I am going to tell you about my favourite day at Dalguise.

It was early Wednesday morning and everybody was extremely tired because Mrs Hope woke us up at 6:30 and most of us would still be in bed at that time (myself included). So, reluctantly we all got out of our nice warm and cosy sleeping bags, we went outside and ran around the accommodation three times (it was training for the Grangemouth runners!) I love running a lot but not running at half past six in the morning in my jammies. On the second lap all the teachers came out with their cups of tea, scarves and gloves on telling us to keep going. They looked so nice and warm. Once we had finished, we went in and got dressed ready for the day ahead.

When we all got washed and dressed we walked along to the canteen and got breakfast. I had bacon and cornflakes, the bacon was really crispy it was the best bacon I had ever eaten!

After breakfast, we lined up in our groups and waited for our instructors to collect us and take us to the first activity. We were all buzzing with excitement and raring to go. Eventually, the instructor came and took us to our first activity which was Jacob’s ladder. I had heard lots about Jacob’s ladder and how difficult it was and how it was one of the best activities so I was really excited to find out what the real-life experience was going to be like. Jacob’s ladder is a ladder made from rope and logs, where the gaps between the logs increase the higher you go.

When we got to Jacob’s ladder I looked up at it and thought it would be a piece of cake, but it turns out I was wrong. We got harnessed up and attached to a rope, we had do it in a group of three so I went with Marcie and Rebecca. After the first three groups had gone up, it was finally our turn! The three of us got attached to a red rope and the instructor said it could hold the weight off a bus so it could definitely hold the three of us. We had to work as a team to get as far as we could go in ten minutes. On the first and fifth log I put my knee out for Rebecca and Marcie to stand on to get to the next log and I swung my leg over the log to get to the next one. Once we got to the fifth log we threw a grey rope over the sixth one and pulled ourselves up, we did that all the way up to the ninth log and we were just about to get up to the tenth log when our time ran out and we had to abseil down. This was my favourite activity so far.

After everyone finished going up and down we went back to the meeting point and lined up in our groups.

Then, we waited for our second instructor to come and take us to our next activity which was survivor. Survivor is an activity that teaches you survival skills like carving a piece of wood to make a tent peg, making a fire out of flint and steel, building a den that is storm proof and can fit about four to six people and we had to choose what items you would bring from a limited list. First, I am going to tell you about what the list was and what I chose to bring and why. The choices were:

a pen knife
clean water
a book
a pan
a first aid kit
a hair brush
Gary the hamster
rope
flint and steel

You were only allowed to choose three things to bring with you and I chose the pen knife to cut things like wood, food or rope. The second thing that I would bring is rope because in a forest or on an island you can find wood/drift wood and make a shelter and tie the rope on the top to keep it together. The third thing I would bring is flint and steel to make a fire when it is needed.

After that, we got put into groups and had to make a storm proof and wind proof shelter/den. We had to find large logs to stack to make a tee-pee type construction to protect us from the rain and wind. Next, we had to go and find a piece of wood to make a tent peg. When you found your piece of wood you had to get a knife and you were shown how to carve safely and how to make a tent peg. Some people threw their tent pegs away but I kept mine as a memento to remember learning survivor skills at Dalguise. The final thing we did at survivor was fire lighting. We were given flint and steel and some burnt school uniform and the fluff that you get out the washing machine and then fluffed the end of a piece of string and put the burnt fabric and washing machine fluff on top of the string and then struck the flint and steel together and that hopefully created a mini fire. When we all finished lighting our fires we put them out by standing on them and gave the flint and steel back to the instructor and walked back down the hill and back to the meeting point and lined up for lunch.

After lunch we had the giant swing and canoeing the giant swing was so much fun it was everybody’s favourite. The sensation when you were going through the air was exhilarating – it was the best feeling ever!

After that, we had canoeing which was super wet, we played lots of games and sang some fun songs and got to jump into the lake and swam about. By the time we got out we were all drenched, soaked right through but luckily it was a warm day so we had partially dried off by the time we got back to the accommodation.

This was the best and most exciting day at Dalguise, I wish I could do it all again!
