Hi Everyone,

Well done to all the children who have sent in pictures of what they have been doing. It is good to see all the inventive ways you are completing work.

My reading groups keep practicing your reading. This can be your school reading book or something you are reading at home. Next week if would be good if you could bring in any comics, magazines or books you have been reading to share with the group.

My math group keep a list of the games you have been playing to share with the group next week. Which is your favourite?

P6 and P7 I hope you are finding time to practice your words for the show. You could ask other family members to play the other parts to help you.

Euro Quiz group it would be good if you could share any interesting facts with us. What is the most obscure fact you have found? What fact has surprised you?

Good morning Primary 5. Here are some activities you could do today to keep you busy.

Mr Shanks added a winter weather booklet to the blog earlier this term. Have a look at it try some of the activities.

Here are some ideas of work you could also do related to the work we have been doing in class.

Read the next 2 chapters in your novel.

Complete your maths homework. Mrs Jamieson’s set could work on making their equivalent fraction game.

Have a look round your house, can you make a list or take photographs of different examples of solids, liquids and gases.

Play some of the maths games assigned to you on studyladder.

Primary 5 26.3.18

This week in Primary 5 we have been working on our assembly related to the Scottish Wars of Independence and look forward to welcoming parents to see it on Friday morning at 9.15.

In Reading we have been working on reading for information and this week we have been looking at evidence from non fiction books and maps to find information on William Wallace and the Battle of Stirling bridge.

In Health we have been working on a project on resilience using the Bounceback programme.

In maths we have been working on fractions and have homework related to this. Mrs Jamieson’s set should be working on developing a game using their equivalent fractions cards and we look forward to playing some of the games in school later this week.

In RME we have started learning about the story of Moses. We have written reports about his childhood and will be working on cartoon strips to record the plagues of Egypt. Later we will be learning about why this story is so important in Judaism and will be learning about festivals related to this.

Primary 6 26.1.18

“And there’s a hand, my trusty fere”….We have had a braw week celebrating the life and works of Rabbie Burns. Most pupils were willing to try some haggis at our Burns supper and we enjoyed some dramatic renditions of Burns poetry. We ended our celebrations with a rousing rendition of Auld Lang Syne. Well done to all the pupils who put themselves forward for our school Scottish poetry competition!

Please remember to look out for fractions, decimals and percentages in everyday life .

Auditions have now been completed for our school show and parts will be announced very soon.

Our class novel has reached a very moving point this week, we have been discussing extreme happiness and sadness and thinking of ways in which we can describe how this feels. Our pupils are now coming up with interesting alternatives to using the words happy or sad.

P5 25.1.18

This week Primary 5 have been learning about life the the 17th century as part of our Scottish Wars of Independence topic. We have started reading a non fiction book and have used the information we have read to write facts about Living in a castle and the country. We made clay castles which will be decorated next week.

We have also learned about the life of King Alexander III and the problems with succession after his death. We have started writing a news interview with Queen Yolande to record the main facts of the story so far.

In Science we have been studying the effects of climate change on the Polar ice caps as part of the Polar explorer project. We have learned about the effects of gases on the ozone layer and investigated the change in the size of a glacier over several years. We have also looked at the effects of carbon on our oceans. We really enjoyed using PH paper to test liquids and learned about the effects carbon is having on our oceans.

This week we have been learning Scots poems to participate in the Burns competition. The children have worked very hard to learn their poems and the standard when reciting them has been very impressive.

Primary 6 12.1.18

A very happy new year to you all! 2018 has started with our usual hive of activity in primary six.

For reading this term we are returning to fiction and all pupils have now been given their new novel. Each week the pupils will be given a certain amount of their book to read and this may be accompanied by an activity for their literacy circle booklets. Each week the pupils will record the date in their booklets of when their homework is due, this will normally be a Tuesday. We will also be reading a class novel and in keeping with our topic this term , we have chosen Kasper, Prince of Cats as part of story is set on the Titanic.

Our topic this term will be the Titanic and once again we are delighted with the enthusiasm the pupils have shown for this subject already! When we are working on the topic the pupils will ‘become’ passengers on the ship. They have all been given the names of actual passengers and their first task is to find out about themselves. We will be doing this in class, however many pupils have taken it upon themselves to start their investigations at home, such keen learners!

Preparation has begun for our P6/7 show and soon pupils will be given the chance to audition for parts. More details about this to follow.

Primary 7 30.11.17

This week in p7 we have been busy getting ready for the Christmas fair. We have made lots of unique products, games and tasty foods that you can buy tomorrow. The Christmas Fair takes place betwen 6-8pm. Please come to the P2 classrooms to visit our stalls!

On Tuesday we had a whole school St Andrew’s Assembly hosted by our fantastic house captains. Every year group sang a Scottish song. We sang Caledonia.

On Wednesday we had our book day (Ready, Read, Repeat). We all dressed up as our favourite book characters and every year group got £1000 to redecorate their library. We also received an extra £200 to pick new awesome books for the library. We also took part in a P7 book swap and were delighted with our new books! We were eager to start reading right away. For a couple of weeks we have also been very busy making books for our buddies and yesterday we finally read our buddies our books and they loved it! We think the next years Primary 7s are going to love this activity.

Also, a huge congratulations to Cara, Louisa, Melody and Anna G who all came back from the West Lothian Gymnastics Competition with medals! We are very proud of you 🙂

Reminders –

PE days have now changed. The children will have Outdoor PE on a Monday and Indoor PE on a Tuesday. Please ensure children come prepared for PE on both days. P7C have another 2 weeks of swimming lessons on a Monday.

Christmas Fair tomorrow – If helping to set up after school P7s should bring a packed lunch to school or order a packed lunch in the morning.

P2/1 Ready, Read, Repeat!

P2/1 have had a fab day today during our Ready, Read, Repeat day. We loved being dressed up as our favourite book characters and the teachers loved taking part too. We spent the day sharing our favourite books, looking at one of my favourite books Stick Man and doing activities related to it. We made our own Stick Men, wrote a Stick Man adventure then made a label to go in our chosen library book. Then we got a chance to have a look at some of the furniture we are going to order for our updated reading corner and choose a book that we would like to donate to it. It has been a great day and we can’t wait for all the new things to arrive.

Primary 6 17.11.17

The children have all finished designing their Red Nose on the theme of magical lands for the Red Nose Competition. They worked very hard on them and we have some fantastic designs. The House Captains will judge them next week and we are all very excited to see who will represent Carmondean in the competition.

In writing, the children created posters to advertise our Christmas Fair. Look out for these around the school as they are colourful, eye-catching and full of information. If you have any donations for the Fair they will be gratefully received.

In reading the children are continuing with their non-fiction book on a European country. Lots of interesting facts are being found and thank you to the parents who have shared information with the children. We hope to share these books with the nursery children once they are finished.

We have started to learn our song for the St Andrew’s day assembly. This year the children will be singing ‘Yer welcome Wullie Stewart.’ We are also having musical accompaniment with children playing the guitar, drums and clapping in time with the music. It will sound fabulous!

Thank you to everyone who has donated to Children in Need. The children have been buying wrist bands, badges and colouring sheets all week. They look very restful today in their pyjamas! We are excitedly waiting for the final total raised.

Primary 6 10.11.17

There has been much excitement in primary 6 this week as the children have started their visits to the nursery. On a Monday, Tuesday and Thursday two children from each class visit the nursery at lunch time. Primary 6 have enjoyed playing with the children and interacting with them. On a Thursday P6 will read to the nursery children and talk about the book. We have been practicing asking questions in the classroom!

In Science we have started our new topic-The Body. We are learning all about the major organs in the body, how they work and where they are. We are hoping to carry out some investigations to demonstrate what happens inside our body.

The children have been given reading homework this week –The Rainforest. The children will read the text then find out the meanings of words, decide if information is true/false/don’t know and make up questions. We would prefer the children to use a dictionary to find the meaning of words but if you do not have one your child could borrow one from school or you could use an online dictionary. Please let us know if this is a problem.

The children have been given the opportunity to design a red nose which will be sold as part of Red Nose Day 2019. They are very excited and have been busy designing noses with the theme ‘magical lands’ Next week the children will decide on their final design and draw it. Unfortunately only 3 designs can be entered from each class so the House Captains will decide the winning entries.

Primary 6 27.10.17

We hope everyone enjoyed their October holiday and the stormy weather did not disrupt too many plans.

The children have been working hard this week. In writing they wrote all about their October holiday and what they had been doing. The skills we focused on were correct spelling, starting each sentence with a different word and including adjectives. The children then peer assessed their partner’s story and provided feedback.

We have completed our Topic on the Industrial Revolution and have started Europe. The children will be creating non-fiction books on a European country in the coming weeks. We are excited to learn lots of new facts about our European neighbours.

In Reading we have finished our novel and the children shared a range of emotions about how the story ended. Lots of great discussion took place. Next week the children will be writing a book review about the novel.

After school clubs have started this week. Thank you to all children who have signed up already. There are still spaces in many of the clubs so please ask for an application form if your child is interested in joining a club.

Primary 3 15.9.17

This week we have been busy plotting different weather on our map of Scotland. We have been identifying weather symbols, watching forecasts and creating forecasts of our own. Hopefully today we will get a few of our forecasts filmed and be able to send these to Mrs Thunder for SummerWinter’s training. Feel free to ask us about this!

We made seasons pictures where we used a variety of media to create the colours of the seasons. We experienced the use of oil pastels, paint, tissue paper and chalks to create different effects.

In Literacy this week, we looked at ways to make the ‘f’ sound. We focused on the phoneme ‘ph’ and discussed lots of words containing this sound. We hope the practice of common words is going well at home.

Homework

Thank you to everyone who has covered their jotters so far. Should anyone need paper for this, please do not hesitate to ask.

Reading is going well so thank you for practising this each night. Reading aloud and questioning the children helps them to use their reading strategies and helps you to see what they understand.

Can we remind everyone about the layout of spelling homework. Words given each week should be written out along one line using the Look, Cover, Write and Check format. Please encourage the children to show you the way they have been forming their new sounds for handwriting, where the letters are positioned on the line and where in the letter you start to write them.

Just a reminder, the children are off school on Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th.

Primary 7 14.9.17

Hello everyone. This week Primary 7 were visited by Yoko and Jess, visitors from the Japanese Consulate. They taught us about the Japanese language. They taught us how to say hello, good afternoon, good morning and numbers up to four in Japanese. They also showed us how to make origami Sumo wrestlers.

Here are some words we learned: Kon’nichiwa (hello/good afternoon), Ohayōgozaimasu (good morning), Arigatō (thank you), Sensei Clark (Sensei means teacher) and the numbers 1-4 (1) Ichi (2) Ni (3) San (4) Shi.

In Art we are making these Japanese Tea Cups with clay. We have also learned what it’s like to be in a Japanese classroom. Thank you Sensei Fox.

As part of our topic we are learning about Global Trade and what type of things you can export from your country. e.g. clothes, games, cars, food, electronics etc. We were teaching others about what trade was like in the Stone Age, the 17th century and now in the 21st century.

In Reading P7C have been reading our new book called “Oranges in no man’s land”. So far it has been a really good book. We answered questions on the 3rd chapter and discussed it with our teacher.

Primary 7 have been really caring buddies. On Tuesday we were reading books with our buddies and we had some playtime with them.

Primary 2/3 13.09.17

Primary 2/3 have been looking at different types of puppets, such as string, finger, hand and shadow. We have been learning about how they are made and how they are controlled. Primary 2/3 worked in pairs to make stick puppets and practised performing with them. They had lots of fun!

It is numeracy week this week so we have been very active in maths, working in pairs, solving problems and sharing strategies. Primary 2/3 have enjoyed working with different partners every day and discussing how they have solved the problems.

New reading books were given out on Tuesday and they should be read regularly over the next week. Primary 2 and Primary 3 all have common words to practise at home.

In phonics, Primary 3 are focusing on the sound “ph” and Primary 2 are revising “wh” “ee” and “oo”. We have been working with partners spelling words with these sounds, completing activity sheets and trying to write sentences with words that contain the sound. Primary 2/3 have been working very hard!

P.E is on a Monday and Tuesday. Could all children bring a P.E kit and water bottle.

Primary 5 Week beginning 4.9.17

This week Primary 5 have been working hard. We have started our new timetable and have learned lots already.

In Maths we have been learning about estimating and rounding. We have also been learning about angles.

In Reading we have started a whole class novel study. P5F are reading Spiderwick Chronicles and P5J are reading Invasion.

We have started our Topic which is Great Britain. This week we have started using an atlas and have been learning about the different information contained in them.

Our gym days are Tuesday and Thursday. Please bring outdoor PE kit on Tuesday and indoor on Thursday.

Homework for next week will include maths, spelling and reading. Please check your child’s diary for further details.

Next week the school photographer will be in school on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Primary 2/3 5.9.17

Primary 2/3 have started their topic about Puppets. We have been investigating different types of puppets and identified some well known puppets like Pinocchio, Muppets and Sooty and Sweep! In the up coming weeks we will be making some of our very own puppets.

In Maths, Primary 2 have been focusing on number lines and Primary 3 have been working on addition up to 30 using the 100 square. Maths homework will be sent home today.

Reading books will be sent home today, along with some common words that need to be practised this week. All homework instructions will be found in the children’s homework diaries. Primary 3 will also have spelling words to complete.

Primary 3 wb 8.5.17

Primary 3 have a busy week ahead!

In maths we are continuing our work on division. Children will be working on ways to divide by 2, 5 and 10. Any times table practice at homework will be greatly appreciated. We are trying to make links with our times tables and work out inverse problems. We are also continuing work on telling the time but shifting our focus to digital clocks. Children will be focusing on o’clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past.

Guided reading will continue this week and the children will be given pages from their book to read at home.

In health/technology we have been discussing internet safety. Children have been able to tell us how they can stay safe online but still have fun. Children recognised the importance of not sharing personal information, sharing with parents what they are doing online and not speaking to anyone that they do not know. Children are going to be creating their very own internet safety posters.

Spelling this week- we are focusing on words starting with qu.

If the good weather keeps up we will hopefully be outside as much as we can doing P.E and continuing work on our topic!

week beginning 17.4.17

Welcome back to the Primary 4 blog!

We hope you have all had a lovely holiday and are looking forward to our final term of Primary 4.

This term our topic will be mini-beasts and our community. We will be learning about vertebrates, invertebrates, food chains, insects and lots more. We will be studying a wormery and also be observing the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly.

In language we will be focusing on the writing of Enid Blyton. This year celebrates her 75th anniversary so we shall be looking at her style of writing, her characters and how she develops her stories to keep the reader’s interest. We will be creating our own famous five novels throughout the term. If you have any of her Famous Five books that you would be happy to lend us, please send them in.

We are keen for parents / carers to hear children reading aloud when completing reading homework. Children will come home with a reading book within the next week. This will be given alongside a letter with the assigned pages for each week and some ideas for discussions and questions to ask your child during and after reading.

This term is very exciting as it is also the term where we will prepare and perform a show along with the Primary 5s. There are lots of different roles in the show like acting, singing, dancing, instruments and sound effects. Please keep an eye out for any lines or costumes that your child has to prepare for.

We are happy to see you all back from your holidays and hope you are excited to start all these new topics!

Primary 3 06.03.17

Primary 3 have their Parent Assembly next Monday so we have lots to do in preparation. Children will be learning their lines, singing their Three Brave Knights song and practising small drama pieces. There will be no spelling or maths homework this week. We look forward to showing you all our assembly on Monday.

In maths we are finishing up with money and moving onto time. Please encourage your children to read and tell the time with digital and analogue clocks. We have also been doing lots of work with fractions- finding a fraction of a shape and number.

In writing we are using our imaginations to write a short story about a dragon living in a castle. Children made their dragons out of clay and used them to help write their description of their dragon. This week we are creating a backdrop for our dragons to help us describe where our stories are going to be set.

Futsal will run as normal on Tuesday in the hall so indoor P.E kits are required.

Last week Primary 1 had a great week consolidating their learning on dinosaurs. The children created a dinosaur land map in groups of 2 and 3, they then learnt how to program bee bots to travel over their land. The children also completed a critical skills challenge creating an information poster about a dinosaur in pairs.
In maths the children have been learning about numbers to 20. Last week they practised ordering numbers and finding the number before, after and between. This week they focus on counting out sets. Thank you for your help at home with this.
This Thursday is World Book Day. Please can your child bring in a book from home on Thursday for a primary 7 to read to them.
Reminders:
PE is on a Thursday, please remember to bring a PE kit to school.
Some children don’t have indoor shoes to wear in class, please ensure that your child has shoes which fit.
Library books will be given out on a Monday. This only needs to be returned on the Friday. Class reading books should be brought to school everyday.
