Primary 3 News 11.6.18

Hi all,

Yet another fabulous weekend weather wise! What a great day we all had on Saturday at our Summer Fun Run. If you have any sponsor money don’t forget to send it in to school.

We are also still collecting our EE2 forms for our beach trip next week and our orange slips to let us know if you can attend our open morning this Friday. Times are 9:30 to 10:30 and 11 to 12.

This Thursday we are hoping to go to Eliburn Park even if there are light showers so please make sure your child has appropriate footwear, a rain jacket and a snack with a water bottle. Children must wear school uniform as normal and we will return to school for lunch.

Free time Friday will be taking place on Thursday this week because of the open morning so children can bring toys in on Thursday instead.

Homework this week is both Phonics and Maths and is due in on Friday. Reading continues as normal.

Have a great week!

Mrs Smith & Mr Gordon

Primary 6 8/6/18

Primary 6 have been working hard and building some great relationships with their buddies. They had an induction morning on Monday which let them show the soon to be Primary 1s round their new classes and meet their new teachers. They had been working hard on their Buddy Booklets, information all about them and the school, and they obviously put a lot of pride and dedication into making them as creative and informative as possible for their buddies. They also helped with the nursery sports day, getting great feedback about how respectful and caring they had been.
We had the first round of class talks and pupils had clearly worked hard on subjects they were passionate about. We had famous people, local people and family members as subjects of the talks and everyone made great efforts to be informative as well as being confident to speak in front of the class, well done everyone!
In continuing with our money topic we began a money challenge which saw pupils try to plan a holiday. There were good discussions about keeping within budget and making sure that the essentials were looked after (although there was some debate about what was essential). They will continue to plan their holiday next week and we are looking forward to hearing about their, hopefully within budget, travel plans.

Primary 2/3

We had a fantastic trip to North Berwick to take part in Plundering Pirates and Seashore Explorer. The children learned about local pirates and made real life treasure maps. We got to explore the Old Kirk and had lunch outside. We finished off on the beach exploring the sand and making sandcastles. We all had lots of fun and learned lots!

Today we are walking up Dechmont Law. Children have been learning that pirates always had to be on the look out for other pirates or dangers. We decided to go to the highest point in our local area to see how far we can actually see!! We might even see the sea!!

Recently we have been working hard learning how to tell the time. The boys and girls have been using clocks and digital clocks to tell the time. P2 have also been investigating number patterns and Primary 3 have been finding the fraction of a number.

Primary 2 have now learned all the phonic sounds so we are now revising all of the tricky ones. Primary 3 are still working their way through the Primary 3 programme with new sounds each week.

All children have had a letter inviting the parents to come to school next Friday for a Careers Day. At some point could you discuss with your children about what you do for a job/career? We have lots of activities planned next week and we can show you these on Friday when you visit.

We also have the Beach trip in 2 weeks time (Tuesday 19th June). Could you please fill out the EE2 forms and return to school?

Primary 1 Update 6.6.18

Hello All,

This week we are continuing to develop our knowledge of life on a farm and have been creating eye catching posters with a partner displaying key facts about sheep. We are looking forward to visiting a real life working farm this week. Also in school we will be making our own bread.

In Maths we have been continuing our work with money and counting out amounts including 5p coins.

In Literacy, the children have been learning about vowels and identifying them in the middle of words.

Next week, we will have a focus on the World of Work and the classes will be researching a wide variety of different occupations. Please can you discuss any occupations within the family with your child and the responsibilities/ daily activities that come with the job.

We have been continuing to practise hard for our upcoming assembly – we hope to see as many of you as possible on Tuesday (12th June).

Thank you for your continuing support,

P4 Auchengillan day 2!

Good morning,

Last night we went to an inflatable games barn. We did sumo wrestling, tug of war and The battle zone (see pictures below)

We also went to the tuck shop and bought (annoying) toys that make lots of sound. We then had supper and went to bed.

This morning we have woken up to sunshine. We had coco pops and hot filled rolls. Then we packed our bags and stripped our beds.

We are about to go off and do laser tag, archery and crate climbing. We are excited about the amazing activities today!

Primary 6 1 6 18

This week we have been building our Matisse gallery in class, replicating lots of different pieces of art to show off our artistic skills. The pupils have been working hard and have been showing off all of their creative skills, using a range of vibrant colours and techniques to create colourful and eye catching art that Matisse would have been proud of. The range of Icarus’s, Sky’s, Sea’s and Gerbe’s were great, with pupils able to put their own creativity into replicating the artwork.
We also had a Paralympic sports afternoon, taking advantage of the good weather to find out what it might be like if we had to cope with physical impairments. The pupils ran blindfolded (with guides), hopped the long jump and high jump and threw discus and shotput with one arm and showed off not only their sporting ability but their ability to adapt to difficult circumstances. Everyone coped very well and we had a great discussion afterwards about inclusion and how difficult it was to be impaired even just for an afternoon.
Continuing on with our work in the nursery, pupils have completed Buddy Booklets to give to their buddies which will hopefully be treasured and make life a lot easier during the transition from nursery to P1. We also had a practice working with the buddies for their sports day and the P6s are very excited about helping with the full sports day next week, continuing to show their caring and encouraging sides to the buddies.

Primary 7 31.5.18

Hello everyone

We are approaching a very busy and exciting time in Primary 7! Next week the majority of children will take part in a full week of transition activities up at Deans Community High School. Children should come to Carmondean on Monday morning (4th June) at the regular time of 8:50am. Mrs Macaulay & I will then walk the children up to the high school for around 9:20am where they will meet their tutor group and begin to follow their timetable as they will in August. On Wednesday, the children will take part in an activity called the “Hurricane Challenge” instead of following their timetable. Most of this activity will take place outdoors so the children should attend the High School on that day dressed appropriately for the weather.

IMPORTANT: The children should make their own way up to DCHS for the normal time of 8:30am on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings. They will return to Carmondean on Monday 11th June.

Rehearsals for our Leavers Assembly are in full swing and the children are working hard to make props and gifts for the ceremony. Please encourage your child to work on learning any words they need to memorise and also learning the words to the 3 songs that we will be performing at the Leavers Assembly on Wednesday 27th June.

The children have been working very hard both in school and at home to finish and perfect their “My Life so Far” projects that they have been working on since August. The final copies are due in tomorrow and Mrs Macaulay and I are so impressed with the quality of these projects. We can’t wait to see the final projects tomorrow. The children will present them at the upper school assembly later on in June.

Important days/dates:

Outdoor PE: Monday
Outdoor/Indoor PE with Mrs Ferguson: Wednesday

Leavers Assembly: Wednesday 27th June @ 1:30pm
Prom: Deer Park Golf & Country Club on Thursday 28th June 6-6:30pm arrival until 9:00pm *Please note* Prom letters have been handed out and should be returned by Monday 11th June.

Have a lovely weekend.

Miss Clark & Mrs Macaulay

Primary 1 30.5.18

Primary 1 are now well into our farming topic. This week the children have enjoyed learning about different animals which live on a farm and the products we get from each animal. Today we will be looking at the life cycle of a chicken and will think about the foods we eat which include chicken meat or eggs. On Monday each child was given some words to learn for our upcoming assembly. Please rehearse these words at home with your child regularly. The children will be encouraged to say these words with no prompting, speaking in a loud, clear and slow voice. The assembly will be performed to the infant children and parents on Tuesday 12th June at 9am. A letter went home with your child yesterday with more details and a tear off slip to be returned to school as soon as possible. There was also a letter sent home with information about our upcoming trip to Craigies farm on the 7th of June. Please return the letter as soon as possible with a £4 payment.
Our phonics sound this week is ‘ck’. We have been thinking about words which contain this sound in class and were able to come up with interesting sentences containing each word.
In maths we are continuing our work on money. The children are learning to make amounts up to 10p using 1p and 2p coins.
Thank you for your continued support.

P2/1 trip to North Berwick

Wow! What a fantastic day we have had at the Seabird Centre at North Berwick.  We started off our day by doing a Rockpool Ramble.  We had great fun looking in the rock pools for lots of sea creature.  We were lucky enough to find some starfish, some crabs, sea snails and lots of hermit crabs.  We also spotted some fish and collected lots of lovely shells.  After our picnic lunch we headed back down to the beach to take part in a sandcastle competition.  We all got into teams and built sandcastles then chose which one was our favourite.  We had such a great day and we are all tired out from the lovely sea air!

Primary 3 News 28.5.18

What another lovely weekend of sunshine! Hope you have all been making the most of it!

This week we have been challenging some of our pupils with some division and multiplication word problems. Please support them only with the reading of these but encourage them to calculate their answers independently. They can write the sum and the answer next to the question.

Phonics and reading will be taking place as normal.

In writing this week we will be asking the children to research a restaurant in Livingston for an information leaflet. Perhaps chat with them at home about a restaurant you have been to before so they can draw upon their own knowledge too.

In Numeracy we will be looking at strategies to double and half numbers quickly as well as identify halves and quarters of various shapes and numbers. Increase your child’s mental agility by quick firing some numbers at them over dinner this week!

With the weather being so good we will be making the most of it by getting outside so please ensure your child has a water bottle, appropriate footwear, sun cream applied and even a hat. All labelled so we don’t lose any items!

Have a good week!

Mrs Smith & Mr Gordon

Primary 5 25.5.19

Primary 5 have been rehearsing hard for our school show the Pirates of the Currybean.  We have 1 week till our dress rehearsal and are looking forward to performing for the school.  Lots of people have already handed in their costumes which is great.  We would appreciate if all costumes could be handed in by Thursday 30th May.

In June we will be beginning a Health topic on relationships, sexual health and parenthood.  The children have been given letters today.  Should you want to discuss anything about the programme please contact the school.

This week we have been learning about medicines and the effects of smoking in health.

In maths we have been investigating weight and capacity.

We took part in a judo taster session this week which was great fun.

Primary 6 25.5.18

We have had some fantastic conversations this week about heroes and role models that centred around our inclusion topic. The pupils were all able to come up with a large and varied cast of people who we look up to, whether they have had to overcome exclusion or they are champions of inclusion for others and it was great to see such enthusiasm! The pupils have been tasked with creating a talk of between 2-4 minutes about their chosen inclusion champion (although we’re sure they could talk for much longer!) and we very much look forward to hearing more of their passion come across after they’ve had a chance to really delve into their person.
The pupils have been really letting their creativity out this week as well in Art, looking more at the work of Matisse and across the year there are some great pieces of work that a lot of care and expression have gone into.
The pupils have been spending more time with their buddies and this will continue over the coming weeks to make sure that the bonds the pupils have already made with each other continue to grow, we are very proud of how caring and responsible the P6 buddies have been!

Primary 7 24.05.18

Hello everyone,

This week has been very busy in primary 7.

Our classes have been put back to normal as everyone is back from France. Everyone enjoyed the trip but they are happy to be home without any rain!

Some of the primary 7s took part in the DCHS maths challenge. We sent 2 teams. One of the teams came 3rd and the other came 4th. We took part in difficult challenges which we worked as a team to complete.

We have made great progress in our leaver’s assembly and can’t wait to perform for our family and the school children in other primaries.

In class maths we have been learning how to use a protractor accurately to measure the degrees of different angles like a right angle, straight angle, and obtuse angles.

In PE we have been helping Mrs Ferguson to test the activities (for example – jumping hurdles and throwing javelins) which the school will be doing to earn points on sports day next month.

Remember everyone in primary seven should have a completed my life so far by the 1st of June.

This week primary 1 have been learning the ‘oo’ sound. They are confidently able to think of and write words with the spelling rule. The children have also been able to spot words containing ‘oo’ in their reading books. Please continue to practise these words at home in the time your climb exercises.
In maths, the children have been learning to add coins together to make amounts up to 10p. If you can speak to your child about the coins 1p-£2 when you are out shopping it will greatly help this learning.
As part of our farming topic we have been learning about the different parts of a plant. The children were able to label a picture of a flower. We have also been using the beebots to travel in different directions across a farm map.  Tomorrow we will be welcoming a farmer from the Royal Highland Education Trust to school. She will be explaining about life on a farm and her experience as a farmer. The children have been thinking about questions to ask her.
Reminders: PE is on Thursday. Please come to school prepared with a named PE kit.
Homework folders should be in school every day since we read books in class throughout the week.
Thank you

Primary 6

It has been a glorious week in the sunshine this week and we have been trying to make the most of it, doing some outdoor PE, learning all about helping those who are hard of seeing to navigate their way around. We also had some outdoor maths, running around looking for bargains to build a family meal on a budget; pupils will hopefully have a lot more sympathy for parents doing the food shop now!
We have also been doing more work on our inclusion topic which led us to some great discussions about not judging a book by its cover and not worrying about what someone looks like as the person is very different to their looks, especially a young Barack Obama who many mistook for Bruno Mars!
We have been continuing our Islam topic in RME, this week learning about Ramadan, what it is, what happens and the importance of Ramadan which will continue to be explored in the coming weeks. It has been a fascinating and very engaging topic and it is clear to see that the pupils are enjoying it and they are treating the discussions with a great deal of respect.
We hope everyone has relaxing and well-earned fun over the long weekend, enjoy the sun!

Primary 1 17.5.18

This week Primary 1 have enjoyed being able to get out into the sunshine for some of their lessons. The children were able to write their common words had, has and see in chalk on the playground. They impressed the teachers with their ambitious sentences using these words.
In our farming lessons we have been continuing our learning about arable, livestock and mixed farming. The children were able to sort some of the foods we eat into the farms they originate from. They have also been learning about plants and how to look after them. Yesterday each child planted a sunflower seed, they are all excited to watch them grow.

In maths, the children are beginning their learning about money. The children were able to identify the coins up to £2 and add small amounts using 1p coins. We will be moving onto making amounts up to 10p using 1p, 2p and 5p coins next week. Any support you can give your child recognising and counting money at home will be helpful.
Next Monday is a school holiday, hopefully the sun stays out and the children can all enjoy a fun day outside!

Primary 3 News 14.5.18

Well what a fabulous few days of sunshine we are having!

We were busy today finding our fastest runners in each house in preparation for Sports Day in June. There were a lot of our boys and girls without a water bottle and although we were able to supply water could we please ensure that our children come to school with a water bottle, especially at this time of year. Also apply a wee bit of sun cream to faces and arms if you know your child’s skin is susceptible to getting a little red in the heat.

Homework this week is on phonics with the additional request to write 3 sentences. Also we have handed out some maths. This is based on dividing by 3 or multiplying by 2. Please encourage your child to use concrete materials such as lego pieces if they get stuck! They can then put these into groups of 2 or 3 and it makes it easier to visualise. Reading is also as normal this week.

In literacy we will be designing a new play park which links in with our outstanding outdoors topic so feel free to have a discussion around the dinner table about what equipment you would include if you could design your own play park and how would you describe the equipment using lots of interesting adjectives!

Let hope this sunshine continues!

Enjoy

Mrs Smith and Mr Gordon
