What a ball we had watching the Glasgow Rocks!

On Sunday night a group of P6 and P7 pupils along with Mrs Ferguson, Mrs Gilmour, Mrs Wotherspoon and Miss Millar headed to The Emirates Arena in Glasgow to see the Glasgow Rocks  take on Surrey Scorchers in the British Basketball League.  What an amazing experience from start to finish.  There was fun on the concourse before the game with pointing fingers, gorilla mascot and a magician and then it was onto the fast paced game. Glasgow Rocks gave us lots to cheer by winning 103 – 76. We loved every minute and would definitely go back and highly recommend others to get along to one of their games.  Check out their website for details on future fixtures.

Name a Gritter – Vote for Carmondean

In the recent Name our Gritter competition, Carmondean was fortunate enough to have one of its suggestions accepted.  Now we need to wait to see if we have enough public votes for our name to be one of the winners.  If you would like to give us your vote, you can vote online here:

We had an exciting visit yesterday from PC McMann who told us all about his job.  Can you spot any young police officers you recognise in the photos below?

Tomorrow we are getting a visit from the fire service which we are looking forward to!  We will give you an update on how we got on soon.

We have been continuing to practise our Nativity and it is looking good.  Please can you keep helping with practising lines if your child has any.

We hope to see you tomorrow afternoon at the Read Write Count book event.

Thank you

Primary 3 Update 16 November

Primary 3 have had a very busy week.  On Friday it was a Children in Need  Dress Down Day and we all enjoyed seeing and wearing spotty outfits and Pudsey costumes.

Last week we continued practising our Nativity. The songs are coming on really well and we are pleased some of the children have been using the blog to have a go at home. Most of the children who have a speaking part have been working hard to learn their words too. It will be a brilliant performance!

We have also been learning ‘Bonnie Wee Jeannie McColl’ for our Scottish Assembly and children have taken words home to practise.

In our topic work we have been looking at how areas around us can be made more accessible for disabled people. We have made people who will live on our ‘Inclusion Street’ and we are beginning to think of adaptions that might be needed for them. We will be continuing with this next week.

Have a great week.

The Primary 3 teachers

Primary 5 16.11.18

Primary 5 have had a very busy week.  For Children in Need we set up a shop which has been very busy.  Thank you to everyone for their support in this.  This morning we had a dress down day and enjoyed seeing all the spotty outfits.

Next Friday is our class assembly and we have spent the week preparing presentations and learning our song.

In Maths we have continued to work on multiplication and should continue to practise our times tables at home.

At present we are working on our Christmas Enterprise topic and the materials for our products have started to arrive.  We are looking forward to beginning production over the next few weeks.

Homework this week will be:

Reading our Group Novel

Learning Assembly parts

Maths

Spelling/Handwriting sheet.

Have a lovely week

Mrs Jamieson/Mrs Davies

Primary 7

Following the success of our Remembrance assembly last week we have jumped straight in to our enterprise projects in preparation for our stalls at the Christmas Fair. We think Sir Allan Sugar would be very impressed with the enterprise ideas the primary sevens have thought of so far. We will be turning areas of our classrooms into finance, production, marketing and sales departments next week!

Within maths we are continuing our work with angles and we have also begun to look at co-ordinates, battleships anyone? In numeracy we are continuing to explore negative integers. As the temperature drops please challenge your children to work out the difference between positive and negative values.

We have attached a picture of a sign that is displayed in primary 7. It reinforces the message we give to pupils regarding social media. We would like to highlight that the legal age recommendation for using Snapchat and Facebook is 13. Within our health and wellbeing lessons, we continually remind pupils about the responsibilities which go along with using such communication tools .We fully appreciate that the use of certain social media site are completely out with the schools parameters , however, we would like to point out that any negative use can affect the class ethos .We would ask that all parents support us in highlighting the guidelines for responsible use . Many Thanks

Primary 4 15.11.18

Hello everyone

We have had a busy but interesting week in Primary 4.

In maths we have been learning how to answer subtraction questions using the written method. The children have been working hard to exchange when they do not have the number of ones required. We have also been practising quick recall of subtraction facts within 20. Please practise these facts with your child at home.

In writing we wrote scripts in groups of 3. We were telling imaginative stories about the Vikings we had created previously. The children worked very hard to incorporate stage directions into their scripts. They also used colons when introducing what a character was about to say. Next week the children will act out their scripts in front of an audience. We can’t wait to see the finished products!

We began exploring our new topic of Enterprise this week. The children discussed what they wanted to learn and how they want to learn. They also came up with some ideas for the name of our company and filled in job application forms for different roles within our business. We will be making reindeer sweetie bottles to sell to family and friends. The children are very excited and we’re sure that the finished products will be fabulous! 🙂

The Christmas Fair is on Friday 30th November from 6-8pm. Tickets are available from the school office or able to be purchased on the night.

Letters were sent out earlier this week for the school Christmas Lunch. This will take place on Tuesday 4th December. Children should order their lunch by next Wednesday or they will not be able to have a Christmas lunch on this day. If your child does not wish to have a Christmas lunch then they should bring a packed lunch to school on this day.

Primary 1 Update 14.11.18

Hello Everyone,

This week in Maths we have been learning to recognise all coins up to £2. We have been talking about the colour and shape of the coins as well as any visible numbers on them. It would be great if you can support your child with this by letting them help to pay for shopping and discussing the coins.

On Thursday we are looking forward to hearing the children’s class talks about their favourite toy. In school we have discussed audience awareness e.g. eye contact and talking in a loud clear voice – please can you work on this at home also? The children will also use their knoweldge of sounds and words to write about their favourite toy this week.

We are well underway with our preparation for the Nativity – please can you continue to practise words with your child if they have been given them? Also the music for the songs is on the blog to allow the children to practise at home.

We have a busy week next week including a visiting Judo taster session and a visit from Library Services who will talk to the children about old toys and show them some examples.

In Health and Wellbeing this week, we had a visit from Mrs Macauley (who is currently on maternity leave from school) and her new baby. The children were very excited to meet her and learned all about what a new baby needs and how they are looked after.

The letters about school Christmas lunch have been issued and should be completed by Wednesday 21st November.

Primary 7 09/11/18

Our P7 Remembrance assembly was a huge success! We were all very professional and confident in our delivery of our lines and our singing and acting was spot on. There were a few tears shed during our poetry and renditions of ‘Highland Cathedral’ and ‘Let It Be’. We all have been working so hard for the past few weeks and it definitely paid off. Well done to everyone!

We had a visit from Michelle with the West Lothian Drugs and Alcohol Service this week and have a follow up session with her next week. We looked into the effects of smoking on our health and the chemicals in a cigarette. We were given the task of giving up something for the week and recording the results. We had suggestions ranging from giving up sweets to biting our nails! We shall see how we all got on on Monday…

In Maths we have moved on to looking at angles, have been exploring different angles and how to calculate a complementary angle. We will be doing a lot of problem solving with angles in the coming weeks so please ask your child about it! We would appreciate it if you could become ‘Angle Hunters’ during the day and ask them if they can find an example of an acute, obtuse or right angle wherever they are. For an extra challenge, they can look for a reflex angle!

We had an informative transition morning at DCHS on Thursday and again in the evening. The children had the opportunity to meet staff members, experience moving from classroom to classroom and play some getting to know you games with key members of staff.  The children  were able to look around the school, ask questions and see all of the equipment and resources available at the high school.

Primary 6

This week has been a very busy week in Primary 6. We have been learning all about the creation of the EU in our topic, looking at the Founding Fathers of the EU after World War 2. We also took short Euro-trip where we looked at a variety of landmarks from all over Europe, planning the best route around the continent as well as trying to find some fun facts about each country.

We have been getting our hands very dirty in science when looking at the human body. Pupils had the opportunity to make their very own lungs on Monday, using bottles and balloons to recreate the respiratory system. We also got to have an up close and personal look at the digestive system using tights, some food and some orange juice, some did not want to have their snack soon after!

In maths we have been continuing on our good work in decimals, exploring how important place value is when working with decimals. We have written our own version of a Jack Frost poem and some of the imagery coming from the pupils was fantastic!

Primary 4 7.11.18

Hello everyone

We’ve had a good week in Primary 4 so far. In writing we finished writing our fabulous Halloween stories and they are fantastic. They were filled with adjectives, exciting details and spooky characters! Well done boys and girls!

In reading the children have been working hard to read their books carefully looking for tricky words. They have then been beginning to use a dictionary to search for the definitions of these words in order to develop their understandings. This task has been challenging but the children have been working so hard and are developing their ability to use a dictionary quickly and effectively.

Tomorrow will be a very exciting day in Primary 4 as we host our “Viking Bake Off” event. Miss Millar and Mr Shanks will judge our creations! The children will make sweet oat cakes with honey and will get to taste their own handiwork! We can’t wait to see how they turn out 🙂

Christmas Fair letters have now been sent home along with raffle tickets. The Christmas Fair is on Friday 30th November from 6-8pm. You can buy tickets by returning the tear off slip to school or speaking to office staff.

Primary 7 are still selling Poppies 50p/£1 preferred donation. We are looking forward to attending the P7 Remembrance Assembly on Friday to learn more.

Primary One 6th November 2018

We have had a very busy and exciting week in Primary One with lots of play opportunities based around Halloween and Bonfire Night.  We have been making pumpkin and monster faces in the craft area and also some beautiful firework pictures using straws and brightly coloured paint.  Our Writing areas have also been busy, writing about spooky characters and thinking about words to describe fireworks.

We will be building on this, and the children’s experiences, in our Writing lesson this week by writing a description of a firework.  If possible it would be good to prepare your child for this lesson on Friday by talking to them about what fireworks might look and sound like.

In Phonics this week we have been focussing on the sounds f and o, looking at things that start with these sounds and blending sounds that we have learned together to make short words.

In Numeracy this week we have been continuing work on addition.  We will be formally introducing the + and = signs to the children and they have been using concrete materials to build the sums and find the answer.

Our Topic this term is Toys which the children are showing great interest in.  We will be changing the play areas of the classrooms to tie in with the Topic.  We have been creating toys to display on the walls of our role play areas which are being changed into toy shops.   We will be learning about the forces that move toys, how toys work and are made, and toys from the past.  We are lucky to be having a visit from the museum service who will help us to learn a little more about the toys boys and girls played with a long time ago.  We will be linking our Maths next week to our toy shop and learning about money.  It would be useful if you could talk with your children at home about the different coins we have and maybe even let them have a go at paying for something in a shop with some coins.  We will also be asking the children to prepare a short class talk about their favourite toy to present to the class on 15th November-more details about this on the homework sheet.

Finally- it’s that time of year again-Nativity!  Children now know the part that they have been given in this years nativity and if your child has words to learn they will receive them with the homework tomorrow (7th November).  Please try and practise these as much as possible.

Reminders-

Wednesday 7th- New homework issued.

Monday 12th- We will be doing Outdoor gym on Monday this week due to the hall being used.

Tuesday 13th- New reading book issued.

Thursday 15th- Class talks about favourite toy.

Please remember to bring book bags every day as we may get time for extra Reading practise.  Children should have bottles every day containing water only.

Thank you for your continued support.

Miss Pringle, Mrs Oliver, Miss Christy and Mrs Steel.

Primary 2 6.11.18

Primary 2 have been working very hard over the past week.

In writing they managed to write a narrative piece of writing about their evening of trick or treating/Halloween disco. Children were independently constructing sentences, using some very good adjectives and beginning to put in connectives to extend their sentences. It sounds like everyone had a very fun and spooky Halloween.

In Maths last week we were learning how to add numbers beyond 20. Children were initially using number lines and have now moved on to using 100 squares. They are trying very hard to remember to count the “jumps” that they make while going up the number line/ 100 square. This week we are using this skill for subtraction. We are trying hard to remember that when we subtract we go back down the number line/100 square.

In our topic Emergency Services, the children have been learning about firefighters and fire engines. We are hoping for a visit from our local fire station shortly. We have also been learning about fire safety and what to do in the event of a fire- “STOP, DROP, ROLL”  “GET OUT, STAY OUT” “DIAL 999”

Homework was sent home yesterday. Please go ahead with the activities and record anything in their share it jotters. Their words for the Scottish song will come home today.

Primary 7 are still selling poppies- donation of £1

Primary 2 and 3 have started practising for the Nativity. Children have begun to learn the songs and parts in the Nativity will be handed out soon.

Please remember to bring in P.E kits and water bottles.
