Primary 6 21.1.20

Primary 6 have been busy learning the songs for our school show in April.  The words for this will be sent out today as part of the children’s homework.  Auditions for parts will be going ahead very soon.  If your child has lines to learn we would appreciate it if you would encourage them to practise this at home too.

We are looking forward to the Burn’s competition on Friday.  The children will be reciting their poem in class on Wednesday in preparation for this.

This week we have been working on our new topic – Europe.  We have been looking at mapping skills to identify the different countries in Europe and have also been learning about grid referencing.

In Science, reading and writing we have been learning about environmental issues related to renewable and non-renewable energy.

Last week we started our new PE block and are doing basketball on Monday indoors and circuit training on Wednesday outside.  Please remind your child to bring appropriate kit for these days including gloves for circuit training.

Mrs Jamieson, Mrs Smith, Ms Mathieson

Primary 1

It has been another exciting week in primary 1. Primary 1 had the opportunity to learn more about dinosaurs this week and have begun their own dinosaur fact files. They wrote facts about the Tyrannosaurus Rex this week and discussed whether this dinosaur was a carnivore or herbivore. They have learned about the role of a palaeontologist and have explored this through play in the classroom.

In phonics this week, the children learned the sounds j and v through our Jolly Phonics programme. They have been encouraged to blend words using these sounds and continue to work on forming their letters correctly.

In numeracy we have been learning about the numbers 16-20 and how they can be split into 10 and 6, 10 and 7 etc. They children have been using 10 frames and rekenreks to show how these numbers can be constructed.

We have started our Bounceback programme in health and wellbeing to develop resilience and positive thinking. They have explored this through stories and circle time games. The children have been learning how to say the days of the week and numbers 1-5 in French through fun songs! They are continuing to practise their Scottish Poem in the classroom, however please keep practising this at home as all children will be required to recite this on Wednesday 22nd. We now have P.E. on a Wednesday and Thursday so please make sure your child is coming to school with a labelled P.E. kit on those days.

Thank you all for your continued support. Have a great weekend!

Primary 4 17.1.20

It’s been another busy week in primary 4!  On Monday we had another lesson with NYCOS (The National Youth Choir of Scotland).  We were learning all about rhythm and learning lots of new songs.

In numeracy we’ve been working on fractions and trying to work out which fractions are bigger than others and in maths we’ve been interpreting lots of different types of graphs and charts.

Last term we were working on persuasive writing and we are now looking at how to write instructions.  This week we created instructions for a disgusting sandwich and some of the sandwiches were very creative.  There were a lot of slugs, slime and mouldy food going into our sandwiches!  You will be able to see these wonderful creations when  you come in for parents’ evening.

Our new topic for this term is technologies.  We started by looking at how technology has changed over the past few decades and thinking about how it might change in the future.  We were all surprised at the speed at how things are changing, especially at how small computers are now compared to the very first computers!

On Friday (24th) it is our Scots assembly and next week the children will choose two people from each class to recite their poem in front of the whole school in this assembly. Thank you for your support with learning the poem.

We hope you have a great weekend!

Mrs Muir and Miss Clark.

Primary 7

In maths we have been converting measurements and calculating perimeters. In numeracy we are focusing on fractions, decimals and percentages. To support the children’s learning in class please continue to encourage your child to log on to education city where there is a variety of activities for them to do.

We have been continuing to work on our science skills using our passports from DCHS. Our focus was on measuring water and temperatures accurately. Next week we will be looking at measuring mass and time precisely before undertaking more experiments.

All the children have been working really hard in class to learn their Scottish poem which they will be reciting in front of the class on Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd January. Two children will be chosen to represent each class at the Burns assembly.

WWII Families and National Identity Cards

Primary 7 have travelled back in time to 1939; they have changed identity and have moved to either London or Clydebank! Other facts about their war time lives will be revealed to them over the next few weeks. The pupils will be finding factual details about their lives through various sources. Thank you to all the families who have shared their own memories and family histories of WWII, personal stories and artefacts bring the topic alive for the pupils. We have decided to add a section to our wall display to share family histories.

Literacy circles

We had some strong discussions at our literacy circles on Thursday and some interesting predications about what will unfold in our novels.

We would like to reiterate the importance of each child completing their literacy circle tasks in order to gain the full benefits of working in literacy teams.

Primary 3

This week in Primary 3 we have been working hard on health and hygiene. Pupils have created thorough instructions for hand washing and we now have the best hand washers in the school! (probably). We have been experimenting with glitter to show how easily germs can spread and how difficult it is to get some of the germs off, even after a thorough scrubbing. We also used a black light to shine a light on the problem of hand washing and it highlighted the effects of hand washing on hands and made us realise that germs can get in all the nooks and crannies and so making sure to wash everywhere is imperative.

We continued to develop our knowledge of knights and castles with work on how castles have evolved over the years from hill forts right up until the big towering castles that we have all seen and heard of. The pupils have been very inquisitive during our topic and this week was no different with many questions asked and many tangents followed which will hopefully allow them to have a deeper curiosity and understanding of our topic.

We have been continuing to develop our understanding of fractions and across the year group the pupils have so far been very comfortable with the topic. We have continued to work on our measuring skills and will be developing these further over the coming weeks.

Primary 5

Hello another busy week in P5.

In writing this term we will be initially concentrating on writing instructions. This week the children wrote notes to help them write instructions on how to use their wearable tech.  Next week they will write the actual instructions in sentences, using ‘bossy’ verbs and time conjunctions.

We started our topic The Scottish Wars of Independence. The children have shared what they already know and what they would like to find out about. They completed a challenging timeline which gave them an overview of key events.

In maths the children will be investigating 3D objects and their relationship with 2D shapes.  With Mr Shanks and Mrs Muir the children are learning how to measure angles using a protractor. They are also learning the names of the different types of angles.

All children have been given a fluency book to practice reading skills at home. Please ensure all children have this book in school with them every day.

The children have been working hard learning their Scottish poems. Some can already recite their poem without looking at the words. They are now working on adding expression and actions to enhance the poem.

Happy New Year!

We hope you all had a lovely break with your families and are glad to be back into a routine once more!

Our PE days are now on a Monday (indoors) and a Wednesday (outdoors). The focus indoors will be Basketball and outdoors we will be developing fitness through a series of circuits involving high intensity exercises. Please make sure your child has appropriate clothes and footwear to do this.

The children have chosen their scottish poems in preparation for our Burn’s Assembly on the 24th January. They will present these in class on Thursday 23rd January as part of a speaking and listening assessment. We will be looking for eye contact with their audience, body language and expression as well as the ability to learn their words. If there are any issues with this please get in touch. Also use Youtube to help you with pronunciation!

We have introduced our school show this week and had a listen to the songs. We will upload these soon so the children can learn them at home too. Auditions will take place in the next couple of weeks and the children will be informed about this. The show is called ‘What’s the crime, Mr Wolf?’ and we look forward to showcasing this late March/early April.

A newsletter will be handed out at the start of next week along with homework. In reading we are looking at non-fiction in class so your child will be bringing home a book to read at leisure as well as their spelling work. We have also issued children with their ‘Education City’ log in and passwords which you can access through google and we will be setting small homework activities from time to time for children to complete. Currently we have set a 6X, 7X and an 8X activitiy for children to complete but they can also access other areas too focusing on second level but use first level if your child finds some too difficult.

Here’s to an exciting 2020!

Happy New Year !
In our usual Primary 7 way, we have hit the ground running for our new term. We started our WWII topic, please be prepared to be interviewed by our intrepid investigative journalists as they research their family involvement and memories of the war. We have issued topic homework. Pupils should select and complete at least one activity from each column. These tasks should be completed by the 24th March. Pupils should be prepared to present them in class.
We launched our Literacy Circle groups, with each pupil selecting their own novel from a choice of books all relating to WWII. It is wonderful to see such enthusiasm in Primary 7 with regards to their novels. Each group has been assigned a task from their literacy circle packs and should have it ready for their literacy circle meeting on Thursday.
We began learning the musical score for our senior show this week, auditions will follow soon.
In numeracy we are continuing to focus on fractions, decimals and percentages and we are studying angles in math sessions.
All pupils have now chosen their Scottish poems for our Scottish Assembly. Two pupils from each class will be selected to recite their poems at the assembly but all pupils have the opportunity to present in front of their class.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye! A welcome return to thy Primary 3s! We hath begun our topic of Knights and Castles and verily we hath created a year group full of the bravest of knights. We hath looked at the peasantry and nobility and hath created splendid portraits of our pupils as noble lords and ladies. We hath looked at the insides of castles and how castle were built, what makes a castle and who lived in them. The pupils hath made names for themselves as ‘Brave, Defenders, Powerful and Courageous’ and we look forward to creating adventures for our knights throughout the topic.

We have also given oot the Scot’s Poems fir oor Burn’s Poetry reading topic. Pupils wir given a chance to hear the poems read oot loud, with some very questionable Scottish accents by Mr Woodward, and wir given their choice of poem. This will be worked on in class but we also ask that they are encouraged to learn their poems at hame as they will be performing them in front of their own class. Those who would like to can also learn them to be put forward for the school’s Burn’s Poetry competitions.

We have started learning about fractions and the pupils have so far coped very well. We have been looking at splitting shapes up into parts, shading in those parts and asking what fraction has been shaded. Pupils have been comfortable in discussing and completing these challenges and are ready to get into more detail with further fraction work.

Primary 1 10.1.20

We hope you all had a lovely Christmas and a happy new year!

Primary 1 have an exciting term ahead. Our new topic is dinosaurs and the children are loving it so far! They are all very engaged as they enjoy sharing what they already know about dinosaurs and what they want to find out about them. We received a letter from the well renowned palaeontologist, Professor Rex. He asked us to look after his dinosaur egg.

In numeracy we have been exploring numbers from 11 to 15 and we will move on to looking at the numbers 16 to 20 next week. In literacy Primary 1 wrote letters to Professor Rex asking him questions about dinosaurs and the egg that we are looking after. We can’t wait to see if he replies!

The children have been given a Scottish poem to learn and recite as part of Burns Day. Two pupils from each class will be chosen to take part in the competition on Friday 24th January.

Our PE days are on Thursday and we will be starting up our outdoor learning again on Wednesdays (letters will be issued shortly). Homework was handed out on Tuesday and is due back on Tuesday 21st January.

Hope you have a great weekend.

Primary 5

Hello and welcome back to everyone. We hope you all had a restful holiday.

The children have been busy this week taking part in a STEM challenge. They investigated what STEM stood for (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) and examples of where each one is used in our wider community.

The children then investigated wearable technology that is improving and changing our lives. Each group chose examples of wearable tech and created a poster to show how it helps people in everyday life. These were then presented to the class.

Next the children got to design their own wearable tech of the future. They came up with some exciting designs which we are hoping to enter in a competition where the winners see their technology made for real.

All children have chosen their Scottish poem and we would appreciate your support in helping them learn it at home. Children can then choose to put themselves forward to represent the class at the competition on Friday 24th January if they wish.

In Numeracy all children will be working on multiplication, division and fractions. The children must be able to recall times tables facts quickly and accurately. Please can you help your child to learn their times tables your support would be much appreciated.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

The children performed wonderfully in the Nativity this week. We felt so proud of them and all of their hard work. We hope you enjoyed watching it as much as we enjoyed doing it. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support in this year so far. It was wonderful seeing so many of you at the Nativity too.

We will be updating the blog to show you the children’s stop start animations of the Christmas story from earlier this week. It was our first attempt using this software and we are proud of the results. We will hopefully be able to put our new skills to practice in the new year!

We also had some fun creating a music video to say Merry Christmas to everyone, so keep your eyes peeled for this too.

We would also like to wish Jody lots of luck at his new school. We will all miss you, but we are certain you will shine. They are very lucky to be gaining you.

We will finish this term again by wishing you all a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. All the very best for 2020 and we look forward to seeing everybody in a couple of weeks on Tuesday 7th January fresh and ready for a full term of learning and fun. Stay Safe and have fun!

Mr Woodward and Miss Smith

Primary 5

The Christmas Holidays are almost upon us!

The children have had a busy week doing all things Christmassy! The talent show on Monday was very enjoyable and there was a variety of acts on show. Ask your child which one was their favourite.

on Tuesday the children made crackers with Mrs Muir and Mr Shanks. They had to use a lot of different skills to make each part of the cracker and all children managed to make one. Hopefully you were able to pull it with them at home.

P5 performed brilliantly at the P1 and and P2/3 Nativities. Their singing was beautiful and the actions for the last song really added to the occasion. Well done to all in P5.

Thank you for all your support and help this year. We hope you all have a happy Christmas and a restful holiday.

See you in 2020!

A Christmas Update in P3 16.12.19

Primary 3 have been experimenting with our ICT Skills, using the I-pads and Laptops in our learning.

We had our first shot of stop motion animation and we are really proud of our attempts at telling the Christmas story. Watch out for the final film once we have put them all together.

We had our Christmas party and had a ball! The children were fabulous sports when it came to the games and it was very enjoyable for everyone involved!

We have also been putting our technology skills to use, measuring, cutting and assembling 3D paper pictures. We hope you like our windows! We were so impressed with them.

Primary 3

There has been a lot of festive fun in Primary 3 this week with the Christmas Party giving the children an opportunity to play games, dance, get dressed up and get their Christmas on! There were some spectacular dance moves on display and everyone was in great spirits. We played some party games and both classes showed such great class in showing great encouragement and sportsmanship to each other. They also had a great time doing our Scottish dances, the Military Two-Step and the Canadian Barn Dance, and most of them knew the dances well and were flinging and clapping and tapping all around the hall. We have also been working on some artistic Christmas projects, with wintery window scenes, reindeer and Santas aplenty.

We have looked at the Nativity story and have been creating puppets and backgrounds to be put together to create a stop motion movie of the Nativity. They have been story-boarding so they know what will happen throughout their scene and will then be testing their skills as voice actors as they record what their characters are saying. The pupils also showed off their own Nativity to the rest of the school in our first run through with costumes and it went very well. There were good reviews all round and I am sure that the full shows next week will be even better.

We have started to look at symmetry in maths and had a look at various shapes and buildings in real life that may or may not be symmetrical and we had some good discussions as to why we could argue some things are, or aren’t, symmetrical. There was a lot of debate as to whether Spiderman’s mask was symmetrical so I’m sure a closer look at the Marvel movies is in order just to make sure.

Reminders:

Monday 16th December – Talent Show

Christmas Dress Down (50p)

Wednesday 18th December – Nativity (10am and 2pm)

Primary 5

In P5G during writing the children wrote letters to Santa to persuade him to deliver their presents. There were some good persuasive reasons given. I think Santa will need to deliver all presents now! In P5M during writing the children wrote letters to persuade Santa to give them a job as an Elf. They had to pick a specific job and explain why they would be good at it. It looks like Santa is going to have lots of helpers this year as the reasons given were so persuasive.

Primary 5 will be singing at the beginning of the P1 and P2/3 Nativities. The children have worked hard to learn the words and their singing is sounding beautiful. They performed in front of the school during the dress rehearsals and did very well. We are all looking forward to performing at the Nativities for the parents/carers/relatives/friends next week

In science the children are making good progress with their fact files on their chosen endangered animal. Many are beginning to finish and are now thinking about their class talk. The children have to use their fact file to help them prepare a class talk about their endangered animal. You may wish to help them prepare this over the weekend. Please feel free to email any power points to the school email address.

On Tuesday P5 had their Christmas party at 1.15pm. The children were very excited and the noise level was very high! However a good time was had by all and Mr Shanks was excellent at leading the dancing during The Music Man song.

Both classes held auditions for our yearly Christmas Talent Show. A variety of acts performed and then the children voted for their favourite act. It was a difficult choice as all the acts were very good. Well done to Isla, Tegan, Katie and Zara from P5G who will be performing a dance to Merry Christmas Everyone by Shakin Stevens. Also well done to Tyler from P5M who will be singing Count on Me by Bruno Mars.
