We have been working hard again this week.

In science we finished learning about how the eye works and studied the sense of smell.  We took part in a ‘smelling experiment’ and

• Niamh didn’t like the smell of vinegar
• Anna would never have guessed the shower gel carton
• Maisie liked the smell of vinegar
• Annabelle liked the smell of soap
• Jamie not only identified soap but he even identified the brand of soap
• Lewis liked the smell of cinamin
• Olly hated the smell of garlic.
• Adam liked the smell of curry powder

Our descriptive writing was about a mystical, mysterious scene and a lake and Annabelle enjoyed it as it was imaginative as well as descriptive.

In PE we ran laps around the school and also did long distance relay with the laps around the school.  It was quite hard going.

For Numeracy we have now started subtraction and for a warm up we used different dice to see who could reach zero first.

We have been inspired by our live maths lesson to continue with origami.

Today we took part in a live maths lesson with many other schools across the country as part of maths week.

We were challenged to think about our knowledge of 3D shapes. We had to use origami to create a cube.

We learned how important the “learning pit” was. Most of us failed the first time and we had to try again. We needed to use a number of strategies to support as. We had to keep a positive mindset throughout in order to be successful.

We have been inspired by our novel to look more closely at insects. This is an example of honey bees we drew. We had to add shade and highlight to make the bee look 3D. We are looking forward to doing more next week and using the natural environment to inspire us. We also learned about the anatomy of insects.
We have also enjoyed:
-P.E. We were working on our jumping and took part in the long jump.
-Writing descriptions of an imaginary character. We had to use lots of adjectives this week.
-Designing alternative front covers for our class novel.
-Learning to subtract in maths. We played dice games and took part in a maths relay.
-Handwriting. We are all working hard to improve our joins.
-Music. We are continuing to explore garage band.
-Beginning our new class novel. “The midnight gang” by David Walliams.

Happy Birthday to Lloyd!

We have looked at the sense – sight – and created these eye models.  We made our name in Braille.

For our descriptive writing we wrote about the setting of the novel  ‘Holes’ – Camp Green Lake.  We then watched a small section of the movie Holes.

We have been thinking about ‘having positive thoughts and we used the App Post It to record our happy feelings.

In numeracy we have been working on addition strategies;  using doubles, rounding to nearest 10 or 100 and splitting numbers into units/tens/hundreds/thousands to help us.  Our problem solving group activity was linked to sequences and this was pretty tricky.

Anna really enjoyed making the eye models.  Adam liked using Braille.

Here are some highlights of this week:

We used the Descriptive Writing Structure and worked together to create a text about Hay Lodge Park.   We made an Imovie using our photographs from our walk and then added our Descriptive Writing.  Here is an example made by Annabelle.

Whilst creating the Imovie, Adam enjoyed listening to the different Soundtracks and choosing an appropriate one.   Isla liked using the Voice Over feature while creating the movie.

We are learning about The Senses and this week we studied the structure of and how the ear works.  We recorded sounds at home and the class had to guess what the sounds were.

It was Week 3 (and our final week) of our mouldy food experiment  – the look of the cheese and the strawberry made Jamie feel sick – and others in the class.  The cheese was blue and the strawberry had fermented and was all mushy.  Niamh felt that all of the foods were disgusting.

In literacy, last week we looked at similes and this week we look at changing similes into metaphors.

In numeracy we have worked on the vertical written standard method of addition and also mentally adding several numbers together looking at what numbers went well together to make ‘tens’.

This week we have enjoyed:

-Music. We were learning about beat sequences  through Garage Band.

-P.E. We were working on our stamina.

-finishing our class novel, Max and the Millions. Most of us really enjoyed it.

-discovering our sense of smell. We went for a “smelly” walk in the playground and were amazed at what we found.

-looking on the bright side. This week we had to reflect daily on what made us happy.

-handwriting. We focused on the size and joins in our letters.

-completing our description texts on our chosen animal.

-creating 3D shapes and learning about the properties. (Face, Edge and Vertex)

-Maths. We took part in a maths relay to help us with our addition.

We finally completed our Batman portrait. We each made one section and collaborated to piece it together.

This week we learned about the eye. We labelled a diagram then took part in some fun experiments to test our eyes.

We have also been busy designing our Christmas cards. We had to think creatively and be very careful when colouring.

We have also enjoyed:
-working collaboratively to create one large piece of art. (Look out for the finished piece next week.)
-learning about addition in maths. We have been challenged to add several large numbers together at once. We have focused this week on explaining the strategies we use to solve questions.
-P.E. We were working on our athletics skills again.
-learning about literal questions. We had to answer in sentences and we were challenged to create our own literal questions.
-Music. P6 have been using Garage band to create their own music. P5 are making their own pattern sequences in groups.
-Handwriting. We are working hard to practice our joins and earn pen licences.
-Writing our description text about Fleas. Some thought they were fascinating; some thought they were disgusting.
-learning about proper nouns and common nouns.

We have had a very busy week.

We walked around Hay Lodge Park gathering ideas for our Descriptive Writing.  We will use our photos for our writing and our IMovie next week.

We were also very excited to find out what our Mouldy Food and Germs experiments would show.   The strawberries were very mouldy and mushy.  The cheese was also mouldy. Some of the bread had started to mould slightly.  We were looking at the colour and texture of the mould.  We decided to keep the food for another week and see what would be next to go mouldy.

We know that germs are everywhere but some places have more germs than others.  We grew germs on different surfaces;  table, floor, our hands, outside in soil and puddles.  The number of germs had grown so we did not need a microscope to see them.   Our growing germs on different surfaces showed us that the floor and our hands (even though we are washing our hands lots of times) had so many germs that the potato had turned all mushy.
