Lest we forget.

Remembrance day

This week we have been finding out about how the poppy became the symbol of Remembrance Day.

At 11 o’clock on the 11th of November we fell silent in class for a 1 minute silence. We were respectful and thought about the ex-servicemen and women who had lost their lives in war.

We made poppy wreaths and painted our own pictures of poppy fields like the ones in Flanders, Belgium.

Non-fiction

We are enjoying exploring our new non-fiction books.

Bonfire weekend recount

Writing was challenging for us this week because we had to have a go at writing our recount independently. We all worked very hard at this.

Maths and Numeracy

In Numeracy we explored some word problems and learned about how important it is to read the words very carefully. this then helps us to work out what the sums is. We recorded our answers in drawings and then number sums.

For practical maths we are going to explore weighing with a variety of non-standard units like straws and marbles and we might even try Lego bricks.

On Friday 19th November you can bring in a favourite book from home to share with the class. The read, write count bags look amazing this year!

Primary 7B Highlights W/C: 8.11.21

We have had another jam-packed week in P7B and we are continuing to work hard and utilise our tools from Skipper’s toolkit.

We have continued to work on note-taking which has been helping us with our research for our information report writing.

In reading, we have been engaging with our new PM Reading resources, looking at non-fiction texts. We have been looking  at different language features, technical vocabulary and grammar. The class have also enjoyed working in groups to support each other with their reading and comprehension questions. Well done everyone!

In maths, we have been revising division of 2, 3 and 4 digit numbers and have been learning how to interpret line graphs and pie charts.

The class have had a focus on Remembrance throughout the week and have watched interviews with evacuees, took part in a Remembrance themed ‘Live Lesson’ and have reflected on how Remembrance makes us feel. Many of the children took a keen interest into the different roles that the armed forces undertake.

Everyone worked hard to produce these striking Poppy pictures which we will display in the classroom. Some of the children also had the opportunity to write some moving poems about Remembrance too.

Look at the questions below and post your responses:

1. What was the most enjoyable task you completed this week? Why did you enjoy this?

2. Was there anything that you found difficult? How did you overcome this?

3. Have you done anything this week to help someone else?

Here we go November

Literacy

This week we had lots of fun in reading making predictions for our reading books and using a contents page in PM reading. In writing we recounted our Halloween day and all the great fun and costumes we wore.

In grammar we explore verbs, acting these out and finding verbs for different scenarios and characters.

Maths and numeracy.

We began making groups of to support us moving on to times tables next week. We also explored bridging to support us problem solving in addition and subtraction.

Topic

This week we explored how we get day and night, and how it is experienced across the world and creates time differences. We really enjoyed exploring this with the globe, torches and mirrors.

Seasonal

This week we had a focus on Bonfire night and staying safe. We read Fireman Fred’s safety story, completed a bonfire listen and colour picture and made fireworks with paint and straws.

We also explore COP26 and it’s importance for our world. The children have shown a great interest in climate change and  our carbon footprint.  They had very interesting ideas and stories to share.

Remember, remember the 5th of November!

We have been working very hard in P2 this week.

Our highlight was sharing the little book we made for Mrs Ward’s farewell. It was lovely to share it with her when she visited our classroom to say good bye.

We enjoyed learning about Greta Thunberg, COP 26 and climate change and we are very proud of the posters we made.

In science we investigated the Moon and learned that the Moon does not shine but, when the Sun is reflected on it this makes the Moon appear to light up in the night sky. We explored this with a torch and a rotating globe. This also let us see that when it is daylight on one side of the earth it is night time on the other side of the world.

We also took our learning outdoors on Thursday. We collected leaves, twigs and bracken for our dragon dens by scavenging in the school grounds. It was a beautiful crisp afternoon so, we took advantage this after all the rain we have had recently. Kingsland is very beautiful with the Autumn leaves on the ground. We then had great fun with our friends running around in the leaves.

On Fireworks day we got very creative and used chalk to recreate fireworks in the night sky. It looked like we were having our very own fireworks display in our classroom.

We wrote a recount about last week’s Hallowe’en party and our teacher helped us to write this by modelling it. Next week we are going to write our recounts independently.

It has been fun learning the 2 times table through songs and being active.

Happy Bonfire weekend everyone!

Remember remember the 5th November

This week we drew fireworks and learned about the origins of Bonfire Night.
We used black pens to outline these fireworks and stars.

We got into role as astronauts and rocket designers and were set a challenge by NASA to design a rocket to go to the sun. We had to research metals and temperatures and draw our teams’ rocket inside and out.
Our writing was also about space. We wrote a recount of a moon walk, as if we were the first children on the moon. The feelings were mixed, from excitement to terror! To get into the mood we watched footage of the first moon landing in 1969.

Subtraction with exchange

In maths we used materials to exchange a ten for ten units so that we could subtract. Being able to use the column method is very useful for when we are dealing with very big numbers. We also looked at lines of symmetry.

We watched a Skipper assembly about keeping connected. These themes overlap with our HWB lessons on friendship as we look into the changes that happen as we grow up.

We have been talking a lot about climate change as we keep up with news from COP26. As young people we have important views and ideas about improving our treatment of the planet. We are very aware of choices we make to live more sustainably.

We enjoyed watching Primary 7’s video story for Mrs Ward as she leaves today. We made her a card full of messages, and wish her all the best in her new job. We will miss her!

P7A Review of the week 5.11.21

One of the highlights for P7A this week was watching the live streaming of The Lorax from The Old Vid on Tuesday.  This was a special screening for schools linked to COP26 and we enjoyed watching it.

We also created a special Goodbye assembly for Mrs Ward which we shared with all the classes. This was another Dr Seuss related task as we re-wrote the words to one of her favourite stories and illustrated it using the Sketches App  and ideas from Dr Seuss characters. The finished product was uploaded to iMovie and also made into an ebook for Mrs Ward to keep.

We also worked in groups on presentations about rainforest plants this week. It was really fun to collaborate on the same Keynote file on our individual iPads and then create one shared piece of work which we could present to the class on the Smartboard.

We couldn’t do gymnastics on Thursday so Mrs Little taught us a new game in the MUGA called Hula Hut.  It was a cold day but we kept active to stay warm!

Time for Reflection:

  1. What was the best bit of the week for you?
  2. What could you have improved on?

Weekly Review 5.11.21

This week has been another great week.

We all watched The Lorax Live on Tuesday and thoroughly enjoyed it. It explained climate change really well and made links to COP26.

We have been learning about plants in the rainforest and how they have adapted so that they can survive in the extreme climate. We then used this information to create an information report on rainforest plants.

Our classroom is starting to look like a real rainforest and we have all taken on different jobs to make items for it. Each week we will add to our display with our new learning.

In maths we are finishing our block on subtraction. Ask us to show you; the written method, number line method, missing number method or expanding numbers method. We have been working very hard on this.

In Health and Well-being we have been discussing relationships and how we are connected in different ways. We enjoying thinking about our connections with each other in class. We have also covered drugs education and have been learning about legal and illegal drugs and the impact they can have on someone.

What has been your highlight this week?
