Primary 1’s wonderful work

We have been so impressed by the wonderful work Primary 1 have been doing this week (can you notice the alliteration?). Here are some of the highlights…

Lots of you have also enjoyed getting out in the sunshine both for exercise and to help in the garden.

Thank you for all the pictures you continue to send in. We love seeing your smiling faces and are so proud of the work you are managing at home.

Keep it up!

Primary 3 Thursday 21st May

Bonjour! Aujourd’hui, c’est Jeudi vingt et un Mai,

Today would have been our first day doing our P3 residential!

Because of this, we thought it would be fun to have a look at some of the places we would have been, as well as some of the activities we would have done over the next 2 days.

If you were set to be on the residential, today we would have been paying a visit to Linlithgow Palace, St Michael’s Parish Church and the Linlithgow Canal Centre, all of which are full of interesting facts and history. A tourist video and Pdf of information are included below.

Linlithgow Palace  investigating-linlithgow-palace

https://www.lucs.org.uk/

In the original overnight residential, you would have had to carry your bags and cases up to your rooms, so why not carry your suitcases up and down your stairs a few times. Also, in the original overnight residential, you had a bed to make – next time your bedding is washed, put your own covers back on for practice!

We also would have had a play in the park and fed the ducks, so have a play in your back garden if you have one, or go on a walk with your family. As we walked around the lock, we would have completed a ‘treasure hunt’, so why not make up a treasure hunt for someone in your family. Or even better, get someone in your family to make one up for you!

At night time today, we would have had a talent show and disco. Why not get dressed up in your party clothes, put the music on, turn the lights down and have a house disco. Break it up with some entertainment and show your family some of your best talents!

Remember to go to bed early – you are exhausted with having had such an exciting day. No talking after lights out and you sleep soundly until about 7am! (This is not how it usually goes! :))

If you are skipping the residential, here’s some school work instead:

Why not check out this web page from the Scottish Opera. I know so many of you are natural born performers and you love to sing, dance and perform. This company are putting together a virtual opera and they are teaching you the songs, dances and acting parts as the weeks go along. The final performance will take place from people’s homes all over the country. If you want to take part in this too, you can. If not, you can just enjoy learning the songs, and storyline of this opera.

Primary 1 21.5.20

Good morning Primary 1.
How are you all? The Primary 1 teachers are still missing you lots and wish we could be back in school together. It is great to see all the photos you are sharing of the work being done at home. You are making us very proud teachers! Keep up the great work and please continue to post your photos on the Learning Journals.
Ms Fox has created some learning activities you might want to try to help develop your art skills while you are at home. She is missing working with you and wants you to continue to practise drawing different objects and things you see in your everyday life. Here are some of the suggestions she gives:
1. On your daily walk you could pick up a leaf, flower or interesting object to draw when you return from your walk, or draw these items from your garden or from your window.

Here are some interesting objects I have found on my walks:

2. Do a drawing of your back garden or of your house from the outside, or a drawing of your favourite room in the house.
3. Draw a member of your family.
4. Draw a pet, or an animal or bird that you see on your daily walk. You could always ask your parents or guardians to take a photograph for you to make it easier
5. Create a poster of the things that you think about when you think of ‘Summer’. This could include the word ‘Summer’ in bubble writing so that you can decorate inside the letters. You may wish to include a picture of the sun, flowers growing, leaves on the trees, cold drinks or salads, your favourite summer outfit, the games that you like to play in summertime (tennis, badminton, pass the ball, running, etc). Your poster should be ablaze with summery colours and drawings.
The most important thing here is that you are practicing your drawing skills no matter what you draw and most of all, that you have fun!!
We will share any photos of your drawings with Ms Fox. I know she will love seeing your super work!
Keep working hard and as always please get in contact if you have any questions.
Miss Christy, Miss Daun and Miss Cunningham

Primary 1 20.5.20

Happy Mercredi everyone!

We hope you are well and are enjoying the activities on the grids that were given out yesterday. We can’t wait to see what you share with us on your learning journals. Remember do what you can and also fit in time for play, relaxing and helping out around the house.

The Rights Respecting School article for this week is focusing on Article 28 – the right to education. Every child has the right to an education. Primary education must be free and different forms of secondary education must be available to every child. Discipline in schools must respect children’s dignity and their rights. Richer countries must help poorer countries achieve this.

Give yourself one minute to think of as many reasons as you can why education is important for children and young people. You can think about how it helps you! What does it help you with? What might it mean for your future?

Here are some activities you can try:

  • Imagine you have been asked to create your ideal lesson timetable for a day or a week at home or in school. Plan it out and decide what you would include and what you would leave out. Make sure it will provide children with a really good quality education!
  • What do you think makes a good teacher? This video might give you some ideas! Draw an outline of your ideal teacher and surround it with words that describe what that teacher is like.
  • Teachers and learners go together! So now think about what makes a good learner? Imagine you are talking to a younger brother, sister or friend who is about to start school. Describe to them how to be a really good learner! Invent a cartoon character to represent this good learner.

I like the idea of drawing and writing down what makes a good teacher and a good learner. If you have time to do this activity we would love to see your ideas on your learning journals.

Thank you for continuing to share your work with us!

Enjoy the rest of your day!

Miss Cunningham, Miss Christy and Miss Daun

Primary 3 Wednesday 20th May 2020

Ca va Primary 3?

I hope you are all well and are looking forward to a quick online check-in today. I know we are! It is the highlight of our weeks! Remember to log on to Teams today at 10am to tell us your news and how you all are.

For a little bit of Science, why not get involved with Dr Chip’s Daily Dose, at 10am there is a link to follow for today for ‘Wonder Wednesday’, looking at ‘Biomimicry’ taking inspiration from nature for engineering.

Mrs Fox has also given us a little Art lesson should you wish to try it out.

Drawing a symmetrical Mask. The video guide can be accessed here: Symmetrical Mask Guide and the outline can be downloaded from here:Symmetry Mask Outline.

Word Boost Word definitions has been added to assignments in Teams. The words are as follows:

Cat’s Ahoy – Miss Smith’s Class:

Verbs: clamp, steer, quiver, abandon

Adjectives: silent, solemn

Dougal’s Deep Sea Diary – Mr Woodward’s Class:

Nouns: directions, souvenir

Verbs: drift, glisten

Adjectives: rickety, glum

Writing: For this week’s writing we are jumping back into space and we are going to spend a day on the International Space Station. Watch this short video to see 2 real astronauts on the ISS and what they get up to on board – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgRMAVoHRbk

Write a diary entry of at least half a page of A4 about a day in space. What would you do during the day, what things would you see, who would you speak to and what would you say, how would you enjoy yourselves, what would it feel like and how would a day on the ISS make you feel? Remember to SHOW the reader what you see and do, don’t just tell them. Use your descriptions and choose the best words!

Maths: For today’s maths we are looking at Tesselation. Tesselation is the creation of patterns using shapes tiled together, e.g.

Your challenge is to create your own tesselation pattern. You can draw the shapes, using a ruler for straight lines, you can use Paint or another art programme on your computer, or you could go outside and create a tesselated pattern in your garden using natural materials.

Today’s Number Talks:

Primary 1 Home Learning 19.05.20

Good morning Primary 1!

We hope you had a lovely long weekend and enjoyed getting some fresh air. The Primary 1 teachers have been very busy. Miss Cunningham went out for some walks and spotted a few ducks and Miss Daun went out for a cycle to the reservoir. Miss Christy went for a walk in the Pentlands with her dog and she spotted some of the zebras from Edinburgh Zoo on her walk up Corstorphine hill! Here are some pictures of what we were up to:

We are all missing you all very much and it has been lovely to see how well you are all getting on at home. We are all proud of how hard you are working and thank you again for all of your lovely feedback on the Learning Journals.

This week in literacy we are having a consolidation week. This means that we will be revisiting some of the sounds we have learned already to make sure they are fully understood. We will be looking at the ee, oo and ck sounds this week and you will find the blending activity attached below. For reading we decided to create a little non-fiction book for you about farming. The comprehension questions will be attached in the messages section of the Learning Journals. Here are the literacy resources:

Bonjour et happy vendredi Primary 3! The weather has been lovely to finish the week off and I hope that for your long weekend the weather continues to stay bright and beautiful and you can all get out in your gardens or take a safe and socially distant walk around some of your favourite walking spots!

Remember that Monday is a holiday so no work will be posted and we don’t expect you to do anything work related at all, enjoy the extra day and we will look forward to hearing all about your long weekend next week when we get back!

If the weather does turn bad, or if you find yourself with some extra time on your hands and you’re feeling creative, why not try this painting and drawing activity. First take a paper and a paintbrush and a paint colour of your choice. Then just let your brush wander over the paper and for even more randomness don’t look at the paper when you are putting paint on it. Then use the random patterns you’ve made to create a picture using coloured pens/ pencils/ crayons/ different paints? The great thing is this will be different every time! Here is a few examples courtesy of Art Angel:

Mental Maths today are as follows, remember to time yourselves to see if you can beat your time taken to complete! Answers will be posted in Teams Files later on in the day.

Your new challenge this week is based on the ‘transport’ aspect of technology you chose to learn about. We will be beginning with learning about the Steam Engine and James Watt’s part in improving this.  Link to Pdf is below, and has been uploaded to Teams files. Please let us know if there are any problems accessing this.

Good Morning Primary 1s!
I hope that you are all keeping well. I have some very exciting news. This morning I came into my kitchen to make my breakfast and there was a trail of glitter and a brown letter sitting in the middle of the floor. Can you guess who the letter is from? I’ll attach a picture of it to the blog and you can read it and find out what it says…

Have a lovely weekend and remember that Monday is a holiday so there will be no new work posted until Tuesday.

Primary 2 – Home Learning 14.5.20

Good morning everyone!

We hope you are having a good week so far.

Today would normally be PE day with Mrs Ferguson and she has suggested the following activity for some active fun! If you are able to have a go-let us know how you get on 😊

Sock ladder Jumping

Remember the ‘Travel to Tokyo’ activity mentioned on Monday’s blog. All you have to do is log any activity you and your family do.  Every little counts and remember there are prizes!

Today is also normally writing day in school. If you are planning to complete your writing today – maybe you could play some relaxing music whilst you do it. We sometimes find that in class it relaxes and focuses us.

We have loved looking at some of your activities on Learner’s Journals and here is a selection of some hard work from the past few days:

Keep up the great work Primary 2 and thank you to the adults at home for helping you learn!

Have a good day boys and girls and we look forward to hearing from you 👍.

Mrs Oliver and Miss Rafferty

Primary 3 13 5 20

Happy Wednesday Primary 3, we hope you have been having a great week so far, we have loved seeing all of your great work and the activities you have been up to. We have had pictures, paintings, videos, even a short clip of Carson doing a backflip! We are loving your creativity and it is so impressive to see how much you are doing with your time away from doing work, well done everyone!

Today we are having our check-in at 10am, we hope to speak to you all as it has become the highlight of our week getting to chat to you all and find out what you’ve been up to!

Today we have a challenge to set you all in light of not having the Olympics and Paralympics this year. The challenge is to keep active however you can and to keep a record of your activities on this website: https://www.getset.co.uk/travel-tokyo. You will need to find your school and then record what you’ve done and how long you did it for and there are possible prizes up for grabs!

Your maths today is all about looking at the area of a shape. The area is the space inside a shape. So imagine that all shapes are made up of little squares, to find the area you count all the squares. When writing your answers for the area of a shape you write it as cm² – the small 2 means ‘squared’. There will be shapes in future activities that don’t have squares drawn on and then you need to use multiplication, however we will worry about that when we get there! I will also put up an area instructional video in Teams to help you! Choose your own challenge level:

Primary 1 Home Learning – 13.05.20

Good morning Primary 1!

We hope you are all having a lovely time at home and are continuing to enjoy all of this beautiful sunshine. We hope you have all managed to access the 3 weekly learning grids and are enjoying exploring some of the activities on there. Make sure you are still leaving lots of time for relaxing, playing and helping out at home too.

We would be grateful if you could all take the time to complete West Lothian Council’s School Meal survey 2019-2020 : https://www.esurveycreator.com/s/890ff1b . The survey is very short and won’t take much time to complete!

The Rights Respecting School article of the week is focusing on Article 14 – Freedom of thought, belief and religion. Have a conversation about times your views have been listened to and your choices respected. Can you name all of the places you feel welcome? Now it’s time to choose from one of the RRS suggested activities for this week:

  • Thoughts and beliefs are usually really important to people. Write down some things you believe in strongly. Share these with your family or discuss them with your friends.
  • Food choices are really important to some people. Find out about the food rules of veganism or a specific religion. If you have the ingredients at home, why don’t you have a go at making a dish with your family? Watch this video from the BBC and its humorous exploration of food and religion
  • List as many religions as you can think of. Do you know what symbols are linked with these religions? Have a go at drawing them if you can.
  • Why do you think religious buildings are important? Think of and draw a building that is important to you or make a sculpture of one of these buildings using things you can find around the house (old cereal boxes, empty toilet roll etc.). This could be a religious building like a church or a temple, or even a school or a library. Write a sentence or two about why this building is important to you.

Good morning Primary 3, we hope you are well and we are excited to share some work and some of the VE celebrations pictures we have received yesterday. It is always so uplifting to see the work you’ve been doing and we would love to post every single thing you’ve sent to us, however unfortunately we cannot upload everything due to blog upload restrictions. We would also like to remind you that tomorrow at 10am we will be having our Teams check-in. We thought to change the time to the morning and see how it goes, if the afternoon suits people better we will return to the afternoon and if the morning is better we can keep it to then? We are looking forward to chatting with you all and seeing how you are getting on, we miss you all!

We would also ask your parents if it would be possible for them to follow this link and complete this short survey from West Lothian Council, this would be much appreciated!

Good morning Primary 1s

Today is Mardi. Can you say that? Have a look outside the window and see if you can describe the weather in French. Here are some helpful phrases:

Quel temps fait-il?  (What is the weather like?)

Il fait beau (It is nice)

Il fait froid (it is cold)

Il fait gris (it is grey)

Il fait chaud (it is hot)

Il pleut (it’s raining)

Il neige (it’s snowing)

If you want a reminder of how to say some of these words and some alternative phrases, this video will help

There are a lot more phrases in this video than we would normally teach, but it is helpful to listen to French being spoken to understand pronunciation. Have a go repeating the French phrases and don’t worry if you can’t remember them all!

Today, if you have time, we would like you to have a look at this video

It is a super music lesson where you will learn to create different rhythms. The teachers had a go and found it really tricky! Hopefully you can do better than us!

We hope that you have a lovely day. Please remember that although school work is important, it is more important that you are keeping happy and safe.

Thank you for all your continued support.

Rights Respecting Schools

Article 14 – Freedom of Thought.

Every child has the right to think and believe what they choose and also to practise their religion, as long as they are not stopping other people from enjoying their rights. Governments must respect the rights and responsibilities of parents to guide their child as they grow up.

Primary 1 Home Learning 08.05.20

Good morning Primary 1

Happy Friday! We hope you have had a fantastic week learning from home and you’ve managed to get outside in the sunshine for some fresh air with your family this week. Today is a very special day as it is the 75th anniversary of the end of World War 2. We call this day ‘VE day’ which stands for Victory in Europe. We celebrate this day every year as it marks the end of the war in Europe. On May 8th, 1945, former Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced that Germany had finally surrendered and the fighting across Europe had finished. At the end of the war in 1945 people across the country put up flags, banners and there were streamers everywhere. There were parties, fireworks, and some people wore red, white and blue rosettes. People hugged, sang songs and danced. It was a very happy time!

If you would like some more information about why we celebrate VE day, check out this child friendly video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpaA_tZJV00

We thought it would be fun for you today to get creative and host your own celebration for VE day. You could host your own tea party for some of your teddy bears, dolls or action figures. You could bake cupcakes for the occasion and ice on British flags, create your own UK flag to wave or dress up your toys. You could listen to some music and dance too! We would love to see some of your fun creations on the Learning Journals. We love seeing all of the activities you are getting up to at home. Thank you for continuing to share all of your work with us.

We hope you are all safe, well and happy and that we get to see you all soon.

Have a lovely weekend!

Primary 3 Friday 8th May 2020

Good morning Primary 3.

Today is a special day indeed. Does anyone know why?

No, not just because it is Free Time Friday day, it’s because it is VE Day!

VE stands for Victory in Europe and this day is celebrated and remembered. On 8 May 1945, Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio at 3pm that the war in Europe had come to an end, following Germany’s surrender the day before. It is important to remember that the war was sill being fought on this day in other areas of the world and lots of the soldiers were still being held as prisoners of war elsewhere as well. To mark VE Day, there is a 1 minute silence at 11am. Lots of online things are happening to celebreate VE Day today. Let us know if you do anything with your family.

If you want to find out more about VE Day have a look here on Newsround: https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/48201749

Your Mental Maths for today is below. You can choose which one you wish to complete. I will post answers at the end of today for you to check. Remember to try to beat your time taken to complete them accurately from last week.

Mrs Fox has given us some ideas to continue your Art in the link below. Since the weather has been so nice, why not try some of the outdoor activities and let us know how you get on!

Indoor and Outdoor Activity Sheet

This week our Topic Challenge is about living in Space. Tim Peake was the first official British astronaut to walk in space in 2016 and so part of your challenge is to find out all about him. The main part of your challenge is to design your own livable space habitat. Remember our needs and wants challenge? Think about what you would need to survive and how you might get it/ make it/ grow it in space. Design your space habitat and then if you have time and you have asked permission you could try building a model. The challenge will also be posted in the Interdisciplinary folder in Teams.

Here are some links to websites that might help you with some ideas:

Have a wonderful weekend everyone! Well done for your continued hard work.
