Primary 3 were introduced to the senses this week. We investigated things we liked to smell, touch, taste, see and hear. Next week we will focus on the sense of sight. We learned a little about the work of Louis Braille in creating the braille alphabet. We will explore this further next week.
We created some fantastic Firework Safety posters in writing this week so please ask us all about the safety rules. We now know what to do on bonfire night with sparklers, fireworks and bonfires.
Please if anyone has lost cardigans or jumpers in the past term, ask to see the pile in Miss Smith’s room. None of them have names, however they must belong to somebody. They will go up to lost property at the end of the week if they are not claimed.

Please bring a water bottle to school filled with water each day.
Please put names on every piece of clothing coming into school for easy identification.

Our preparations for our Remembrance Assembly are now well under way. Primary 7 have put together a compilation of music, poetry and drama and have written a poignant script to explain to the rest of the school why we consider Remembrance to be so important. Our mission next week is to pull it all together!
One of the main Primary 7 responsibilities includes organising the sale of poppies within the school. We will continue to sell them next week, we are suggesting a minimum donation of 50p .
We were officially awarded our Gold Sports award on Wednesday with the whole school enjoying a sports assembly to celebrate this honour. Well done to all involved, primary 7 played a big part in attaining this award through their involvement in gymnastics , cross country , football and handball .

We are focusing on division in Primary 7 . If you know your timestables, division calculations are much easier! When you are practising your timestables at home, please ‘flip’ the sums –
6 x 7 = 42
6 x 7 = 42
42 divided by 6 = 7
42 divided by 7 = 6
Thank for your continued support.

Hello everyone
Primary 4 have had an extremely busy but very fun week! On Monday we were visited by some very important people – two vikings! They wore traditional Viking clothes and spoke to us in a language Vikings use called Norse. The children were able to learn some new words and were even beginning to understand instructions in Norse! The Vikings taught us all about special traditions, burials, clothes, food, weapons and even dancing! What a fantastic learning experience! Thank you Vikings 🙂
On Wednesday we attended a sports event at Craigswood Sports Centre with other Primary 4 children from our cluster. The children competed in the handball festival with great enthusiasm showing great skill and sportsmanship. Thank you to Mrs Ferguson for working with the children to improve their skills. Well done Primary 4!
This week in writing the children wrote a spooky story all about Halloween. They worked very hard to focus on our 3 core targets whilst writing – using full stops and capital letters, spelling all common words correctly and using a variety of connectives. We will finish these stories next week and we cannot wait to read the finished articles!
On Monday your child received a reading book home and a new homework sheet inside their spelling jotter. Each week your child will have pages to read in their new book. They will have a full week to read these pages (from Monday to the following Monday). Spelling homework will continue as before and maths homework will be given each week. This may be in the form of a worksheet but also could be a practical activity/Studyladder game. Thank you for all your support with homework.
Last Thursday’s Halloween disco was a huge success! It was terrific seeing all the children dressed up and having a fantastic time! Thank you to the PSA for organising such a well planned and fun event! And well done too to Zara and Sophie for winning the costume competition!
Reminders –
Spelling – due Friday
Maths worksheet – due Friday
Reading pages – By next Monday

Today, Carmondean pupils and staff and a few very special guests were present at an extraordinary assembly where Mr Ferguson from Sport Scotland presented the school community with the Sport Scotland Gold School Sports Award in recognition of the work done in and outside of school to promote sport, physical activity and health. This prestigious award was the result of a lot of hard work by our P.E. teacher, Mrs Ferguson, and our Sports Committee, made up from pupils in Primaries 5-7. The award is valid for three years, after which time we will have to apply again. Who knows, maybe next time we will earn Platinum! Also in the picture is Mrs Sheila McEwan (West Lothian Council Sports), Mrs Angela Coulter (Active Schools Coordinator) and Mr Craig McLean, our very successful partner elite athlete (Commonwealth and European Championships Bronze Medal Winner in Swimming). Below is a short video showing the kinds of activities and the various partnerships we were involved in to gain the award. A huge ‘Well Done’ to Carmondean.
This week Primary 1 have been learning 2 new sounds: g and l. The children are becoming very good at thinking of words starting with these letters and are building confidence both reading and writing short words containing the sounds we have learnt so far. Thank you for all your help at home with this, the children are making great progress! We are also focusing this week on the common words go, got and get. Please practise these words with your children and try to think of some sentences with these words in them.
In maths we are working on addition. The children are beginning to move on from adding pictures of objects to using the written sums.
We are starting our new interdisciplinary topic on toys this week. The children spoke about what they already know about toys yesterday and we will use this knowledge to inform the learning throughout the term. Tomorrow we will be creating a toy shop in each of our classrooms.
Next week we will be giving some children lines to learn for our upcoming nativity. We will also be learning some new songs in class for this. It is getting very exciting!
Thank you for all your continued support
Primary 1 teachers
Primary 2 loved the Halloween Party! All the costumes were fantastic!
Homework is due on Thursday, please remember to sign off any homework activities which were completed. We will share our work with our peers on Thursday morning. Remember to keep doing reading regularly.
We are learning to add mentally in maths this week. We are hoping to use the counting on strategy to help us add big numbers.
In writing we will be writing a story about our Halloween activities- treat or treat, sweeties, parties etc. We are hoping to use a variety of adjectives to help make our stories come to life.
We are kicking off our new topic with learning about Firefighters. We have been investigating the purpose of the firefighters uniform and helmet. Children have also been looking at and describing fire engines. We are hoping for a visit from our local firefighters soon.
Primary 7 are selling Poppies for Remembrance Day. They would appreciate a donation of £1.
P.E kits and water bottles!
Miss Rafferty and Mrs Muir
Welcome back! We hope you all had a fantastic October break.
This week Primary three finished our weather topic and said goodbye to Summer Winter who had been with us since our first few weeks in Primary three. We helped her learn along with us in lots of the learning opportunities provided from our topic. We spend a little time this week designing and deciding on our new topic, “Inclusion,” and the children have thought of questions they would like answered throughout their learning.
The Halloween party was a huge success and the outfits this year were amazing. The hard work and effort taken to produce the costumes and make-up was clear for all to see and the children had a ball!
We will begin learning songs for our Nativity soon and auditioning for parts.
This week Poppies will be on sale. We ask that a donation of at least 50p is given should your child wish a poppy.
Thank you for your continued support,
Miss Smith, Mrs Smith and Ms Matheson.
This week our pupils have been being very serious in their writing. They have been working on poetry based on remembrance and the Great War. They chose which type of poem they wanted to write and identified what they should describe in them, which was what they see, hear, think and feel. They have worked so hard on them and produced some poignant, powerful and beautiful poems. Their challenge was to make Mrs Gilmour cry and we are sure they will do just that!
In Maths we are finishing off time and will be moving on to angles next week. Please continue to ask your children time based questions often, however, as this is a very valuable skill to practise.
We had a fantastic visit from the Science department at DCHS on Tuesday this week. We discussed the skills needed for science and had a shot at mixing chemicals, documenting the reaction and filtering the substance out. It was a fantastic, hands-on experience and we cannot wait for our next visit!
We are continuing to bring together our remembrance assembly and words have been given out to some pupils. There will be a part for everyone so don’t fret if they do not have lines yet! We discussed what we should include in our assembly and have had some brilliant ideas to make our assembly memorable.
We are also going to be going around the classes selling poppies in the coming weeks. We are suggesting a minimum donation of 50p per poppy, but encouraging a donation of £1. All proceeds go to the Scottish Poppy Appeal.

We hope you all had a lovely October holiday. It has been nice hearing about all your exciting adventures from the children.
Next week the Primary 7 children will begin to sell poppies for remembrance day. It is a minimum donation of 50p for each poppy, with £1 being preferable. Please ensure your child knows there is money in their bag.
We are changing the homework organisation slightly. It is a challenge to get all the homework marked and new homework issued within the same day therefore homework will be collected on a Tuesday and reissued on a Wednesday. This is on a fortnightly basis and you can find the due date on the top of the homework sheet. Please ensure your child brings their reading bag, reading book and blue reading log to school every day.
This week Miss Pringle and Miss Christy’s classes had a visit from Katie from the RSPB. She taught us all about different animals habitats and gave us some simple ideas to begin to create homes for small animals within our playground. We used the large field to hunt for different habitats and played games which encouraged us to think about the challenges small animals face to find food and shelter. This was a wonderful experience and Mrs Steel’s class are looking forward to their RSPB visit next Tuesday.
All classes from P3 to P7 will be back in the gym hall with Mrs Ferguson this week so please remember to bring indoor gym kit.
Here is a link to the website for the Invictus Games that are taking place in Sydney this week. Please take a look when you get a minute.

These athletes show so much courage, determination and resilience after their life changing injuries and prove how important sport and physical activity is in their journey.

We have dealt with exploding volcanoes, catastrophic tsunamis, disastrous mudslides, deadly avalanches, raging wildfires and destructive earthquakes …my goodness I think we need a holiday ! The presentations of the Primary 7 natural disaster homework tasks were excellent. Well done Primary 7. Here’s a special example by Allan:
We have been discussing the subject of remembrance this week in preparation for our assembly in November. The pupils have been making stain glass windows depicting a scene which represents the first and second world wars. The results are stunning and will make a very poignant display.

Hello everyone
It was lovely to meet so many parents and carers last night at our first Parents evening. We look forward to welcoming many others this evening.
This week we have been completing work on our whole class novel studies “Ottoline and the Yellow Cat” (P4C) and “The Legend of Spud Murphy” (P4D). After the October holidays your child will receive a book home with them and will be given pages to read each week. They will also complete written work in class related to what they have read.
On Monday we learned about Viking homes. The children explored what their homes would have looked like and the similarities and differences between Viking longhouses and our own homes. Some of the children weren’t sure if they would like to share their house with the farm animals! The children then began to create their own Viking homes from a “birds eye view”.
In ICT this week the children were using the programme “Textease” to create their own Viking posters. They learned how to change the size, look and colour of our text and the children enjoyed that they could place their text anywhere that they wanted on the page. We’re looking forward to completing the posters after the holidays.
Tomorrow is the last day of term before the October holidays. We look forward to seeing the children back at school on Tuesday 23rd October.
Have a lovely October break.
Miss Clark & Miss Donaldson
Hello All,
We are having another busy week in Primary 1. In Literacy, we are continuing to learn new sounds and beginning to blend them together to read and build short words. In Numeracy, we are working on combining sets of objects and practising forming our numbers correctly.
This week some of our play has been focussed on Autumn. Children have had the opportunity to use Autumn colours to create their own crafts, writing Autumn words and putting Autumn objects in size order.
Please remember next week is the October holidays. The school will be closed week beginning 15.10.18 – the children will return on Tuesday 23.10.18.
Homework is due on Tuesday 23.10.18. Please could children bring their book bag to school every day.
On Thursday 25th October, we have our Halloween Disco . If you have not paid for a ticket and you would like your child to go please contact the school office.
This week we look forward to welcoming many of you at Parents Evening on Wednesday (10.10.18) and Thursday (11.10.18) .
Thank you for your continuing support,
Primary 1 Teachers
We are looking forward to seeing you all again this week at parents night. The children are excited to show you work in their jotters, finished work folders and the classroom walls.
Our topic is coming to a close. Our 1950’s classroom experience was brilliant and the children really came into character and played by the rules. This week we are going to be learning about transport and we will be finishing the week with a 1950/60s Disney classic!
Thank you and well done to all the children that completed the homework activities, some were fabulous! We will send new activities out after the October holiday. Children will keep their reading books until Thursday, these will be collected in and new ones issued out after the holidays too.
Can you encourage your children to keep saying and writing their numbers to 100. Also encourage them to read as much as possible (signs, newspapers, books, magazines etc)
We have Library Services coming to visit us on Thursday- they will be showing the children different artifacts from the 1950/60s which should be really exciting and interesting.
Reminders- book fair at parents evening, water bottles, P.E kits and reading books.
Miss Rafferty and Mrs Muir
Primary 5 have started a new Health topic this week. We have been looking at healthy eating and what a balanced diet looks like using the healthy food plate. We have recorded some examples and have worked in pairs to make our own healthy food collage.
In reading we have been looking at how an author creates settings and comparing the work of 2 different authors.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone’s models on Thursday and hope to invite parents to see them after the holidays. A letter with more details will be handed out this week.
In maths we have been working on adding and subtracting large numbers mentally. We have also been working on 2D shape and have learned the names and properties of different quadrilaterals and triangles.
We are looking forward to our parents visiting this week to see all of the work we have completed so far.
Mrs Jamieson and Mrs Davies
The pupils became Japanese for a time this week, adopting Japanese names and writing diary entries as Japanese school children. We were surprised to find out that in Japan the pupils have to clean their own schools, serve their own lunches and eat them in their classrooms!
As we continue studying Time in Maths please bring time into your routines and conversations at home. Ask your child to calculate time periods , convert from the 12 to the 24 hour clock etc .
Once again primary 7 have inspired us with their mature discussions around our class novel Wonder. This week we have discussed in depth the actions of characters, relating them to real life circumstances and how we would have perhaps dealt with certain situations.
