P5A combined their History and Science lessons from this block to create mini shadow puppet shows. We were able to show our learning about Vikings and Light. Here are some stills from what was a very fun afternoon!
Winter inspiration
As we (hopefully) head towards Spring, here’s a selection of some of our work which was inspired by the recent wintery weather. P5A explored different media and painting techniques to create these beautiful wintery trees. We also used ‘Snow’ as a theme for writing Narrative texts where the complication was something to do with the weather. Together we think they make a pretty good addition to our already fabulous corridor.
cuisenaire rods
We have been using the Cuisenaire rods to help with our division in maths but we also figured out lots of other things they could help us with. We showed number bonds to 10 and 20, number stories (ways to show a number eg 4 and be 2+2, 3+1 etc), the 2 times table and lots more.
museum visit
On Wednesday 11th March we visited the National museum in Edinburgh. We started off visiting the science zone where we had great fun exploring and experimenting. We then went to see the animals before having a break for lunch. In the afternoon we went to see the Roman artefacts and had a great time hunting for various objects including sandals, swords and some Roman coins.
Let there be light!
In P5 we have been learning about Light and Sound. This week we looked at what a light source was and what a reflector was. We also learned about natural and artificial light sources.
Every time we leave the school grounds we wear these Hi-vis bibs but did we ever really realise how effective they were? This photo shows what happens when the light from a vehicle shines on the reflective strips at night. We thought it was really cool!
A fantastic day at the museum!
P5A and B had a brilliant day at the National Museum of Scotland. We studied the world of Harald the Viking and loved seeing real Viking artefacts and evidence of their lifestyle.
We also had time to explore the rest of the Musuem from the Natural world and Technological advancements to the fabulous views from the rooftop terrace.
A HUGE thank you to all our fantastic adult helpers who gave up their whole day to come with us and lead a group – we couldn’t have done it without you!
World book day
P4/5 had a fantastic time transforming the classroom door into the book Demon Dentist. We were especially excited to see that David Walliams had liked and shared the picture on his twitter feed!
A thoughtful visitor
P5A were very touched when Jackson from P2/3 came to us with a lovely book for us to borrow. He had seen our Viking display and he thought we might like to read a book from his classroom called ‘ Dragon Stew’. We loved it Jackson, thank you!
“Viking at School” – World book day celebrations for P5A
We had a blast decorating our classroom door (OK, and a little beyond!) for World Book Day. We have been learning about the Vikings so chose the novel ‘Viking at School’ by Jeremy Strong. If you are passing, have a very close look in our longship…you may see some familiar faces!
Edit – Oh my goodness! Jeremy Strong himself commented on our door!
trimontium visitor
Rob came to talk to us about the Roman fort near Melrose and to show us some of the artefacts that have been found there. We got to hold a 1800 year old Roman playing piece from a game and also got to try on some replica armour. It was great fun but we decided being a soldier must have been hard work as the armour was very heavy!
