Last week, primary 1 had a week of consolidation in their phonics learning. We spent a lot of time reading, writing and blending together the sounds we have learnt so far (a, t, p, i, n and s). The children are making good progress learning their sounds, thank you for your support at home with this. We have also be practising the common words (a, at, the, in, I, it, and, an and is). Please continue to practise these at home so that the children can read and write the words quickly and accurately.
In maths we have been learning our numbers to 10. We have been saying number sequences forwards and backwards to 20. We have also been practising making these numbers and writing them neatly.

P2/1 27th September 2017
We have had another busy week in P2/1 this week. Both the P1s and the P2s have been working with numbers, looking at numbers before, after and between and starting to count from different numbers. The P1s have been doing this with numbers 0-10 and the P2s have been looking at numbers up to 50 and some of us have been investigating numbers to 100! We are enjoying playing lots of different games to help us with this.
In language the P1’s have looked at the sounds ‘p’ and ‘n’ to go along with s,a,t and i. We have been looking at how we can blend some of these sounds together to make words. Some of us have been doing really well with this-please continue to play the homework game we sent home to support this.
The P2’s have been continuing to revise some sounds including -oy, ph, oa, -ck. You can discuss these with your children at home and see how many words they can remember with these sounds in. Nest week the P2s will be beginning to focus on one sound a week and after October break will be getting a Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check style homework to go along with this.

Primary 1 w.b. 25/9/17
Primary 1 have had a busy couple of weeks. The children are now settled well into school life and routines and are enjoying learning lots of new things in our lessons. In phonics, we have now learnt the sounds a, t, s, p, i and n. This week we are revising these sounds and are beginning to blend them together to make short 2 and 3 letter words (sat, pan, sip etc). Any work you do at home practising to read, say and write these sounds is hugely beneficial for your child.
In maths we are continuing to learn our numbers to 10. The children have been making the quantities in different ways including fingers, with cubes and cutting out pictures. We have also been practising writing the numbers and ordering forwards and backwards 1-10.
In science the children have been learning about their 5 senses. Last week we focused on the sense of hearing and made musical instruments. We spoke about how to make a loud and quiet sound.
In your child’s homework folder this week you will find an A4 sheet of card with a variety of sounds on it. Please cut out the cards of the sounds taught so far (a,t,s,p,i and n) and help your child to make short words. There is a list of possible activities to try in the homework folder. We are also asking for every child to bring in a photo of them self as a baby tomorrow (Wednesday 27th Sep). The children will be talking about how they have changed and the different needs a baby has to an older child.

-Please provide your child with a named water bottle every day.
-PE is on a Monday. Please can you ensure that all clothes are named in case they get misplaced.
-It is really helpful if your child can write their name confidently and clearly. Please practise this as part of your homework.

Having discussed how difficult life was for working class children in the Victorian era, our pupils have decided that doing their chores and completing homework are not that bad after all! One pupil described feeling very lucky and this seemed to be the general consensus throughout primary six ………….perhaps we should increase chores and homework!!
We have been exploring all aspects of Victorian working conditions, particularly focusing on child labour. The pupils have been analysing different sources of information from this time period and discussing which improvements in working laws genuinely helped protect children from such harsh conditions.
The children have been working hard practising for the cross country event and those who have decided not to take part will be attending the event acting as our roaming sports reporters.
Invention ideas are starting to fly around our classrooms, remember the inventor challenge homework is due on Friday 6th October.

As Scottish maths week draws to a close it has inspired Primary Six even further in their quest to develop and use their math skills! We have completed some challenging problem solving exercises this week and the pupils have enjoyed sharing their strategies with each other.
Mathematics is a prerequisite for many careers in today’s global economy but it is also an essential life skill. We encourage you to bring maths in to as many home life tasks as you can. The following list provides links to websites and activities which can help with mathematical learning;

Creativity was palpable in our classrooms this week as the pupils in the midst of creating a contrasting landscape depicting the transformation from an agricultural land to one of industry. Discussions, ideas and artistic flair were in full motion! Our next steps with regards to our topic will be researching inventors and exploring their impact. The pupils have been given an inventor challenge as homework. We will be discussing how to tackle this assignment in more depth next week in class. The completed inventions are due on Friday 6th of October.

Primary 5. 15/09/17
Happy Friday Primary 5,
Throughout this week we have concentrated on ‘ae’ sounds in spelling. We looked at the 5 sounds and practiced using the words in various contexts. At home children should reinforce their learning through read, say, cover, write, check and then by selecting 1 activity from the ‘Pick ‘n’ Mix Homework’ sheet. Pupils return this homework on Fridays.
It was numeracy week in Maths. We therefore explored big numbers, place value, dot patterns, mental strategies and data handling. The work is challenging learning and encourages pupils to be successful learners who are beginning to confidently explain their understanding.
Our Great Britain topic has centered on Geographical features. We have a very good understanding of Atlases and how to use them correctly. We identified major cities, landmass, airports and rivers then marked them on our own maps. Our next steps is major landmarks. We are also learning to work collaboratively with others.
Reminder: Thursday is indoor P.E day. We have been very pleased that mostly all the children are remembering to bring appropriate kit and footwear. Well done.
Finally, we hope you have an enjoyable long weekend and maybe the weather will be kind to us. Pupils resume on Wednesday 20th September.

Hello,
Yet another busy week in Primary 6, classroom routines are already well established and timetables are underway.
We sent home fact families maths sheets this week. Please keep these at home and use them as a guide to practise times tables and the relationship between multiplication and division. We have shown the pupils a variety of times tables songs available on You Tube. We encourage the pupils to use these at home but strictly with Parent permission!
Our topic this term is the Industrial Revolution and we introduced this to the boys and girls using a clip from the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony as it clearly depicts the change from an agricultural land to one of heavy industry. We are organising a trip to New Lanark and will send home details very soon.
Mr Bruce, one of our music specialists, will be giving the children the opportunity to audition for chanter lessons next week. If your child is interested please discuss this with them as it would mean time out of class if they begin lessons and a lot of practice at home.

Primary 5 Week beginning 4.9.17
This week Primary 5 have been working hard. We have started our new timetable and have learned lots already.
In Maths we have been learning about estimating and rounding. We have also been learning about angles.
In Reading we have started a whole class novel study. P5F are reading Spiderwick Chronicles and P5J are reading Invasion.
We have started our Topic which is Great Britain. This week we have started using an atlas and have been learning about the different information contained in them.
Our gym days are Tuesday and Thursday. Please bring outdoor PE kit on Tuesday and indoor on Thursday.
Homework for next week will include maths, spelling and reading. Please check your child’s diary for further details.
Next week the school photographer will be in school on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Primary 2/3 5.9.17
Primary 2/3 have started their topic about Puppets. We have been investigating different types of puppets and identified some well known puppets like Pinocchio, Muppets and Sooty and Sweep! In the up coming weeks we will be making some of our very own puppets.
In Maths, Primary 2 have been focusing on number lines and Primary 3 have been working on addition up to 30 using the 100 square. Maths homework will be sent home today.
Reading books will be sent home today, along with some common words that need to be practised this week. All homework instructions will be found in the children’s homework diaries. Primary 3 will also have spelling words to complete.

Primary 1 w.b. 4.9.17
The primary 1s are settling in well to school. The children have been learning school routines and are beginning to work independently in their daily tasks. The children are coping well with full days are are enjoying getting stuck in with their learning.
This week we are beginning our work on phonics. We will be teaching the ‘a’ and ‘t’ sounds throughout the week and will be learning the words ‘a’, ‘at’ and ‘the’ to recognise and read by sight. The children will receive a reading book home with them this week to read with an adult. The book will have no words so please see the accompanying letter for suggested activities to do with the book.
In maths, we have been learning the numbers 1-6. We are concentrating on correct formation of these numbers and counting out sets accurately.
We are also beginning our interdisciplinary topic about myself and my family this week. The children will talk about their family and will investigate their 5 senses, especially the sense of hearing.
This is the first week of homework. Homework will be given out on a Tuesday to be handed back in on a Friday. This week the children have a reading book to read, a library book to be read to them and discussed, words in a yellow jotter to learn and a maths worksheet (writing 0-5).

Primary 3 30.5.17
Primary 3 are going to be creating their very own dream play park out of junk! The children will work in small groups and use their prior knowledge and imagination to construct a park and the play equipment. The children will have to design their parks on paper, identifying what equipment they want to have and what materials they will require to complete the challenge. They will then work together to create their park and finally present their model to the class. We are looking forward to what master pieces are going to be constructed over the next couple of days!

We are coming to the end of our division topic and the children have worked really well. We will still encourage the children to practise their times tables at home because they have been so helpful in allowing us to solve division questions and problems.
In Health we have been doing quite a bit of work on Road Safety. The children were able to discuss and clearly state the Green Cross Code and this week we will be discussing the importance of being SEEN while walking on footpaths and crossing the roads.

Primary 1/2 Week beginning 29.5.17
Primary 1/2 had a very exciting week last week. We went on a trip to the Seabird Centre at North Berwick. In the morning we visited the rockpools where we were able to find lots of sea creatures, including sea snails and crabs. We also learned about lots of other animals found in the sea in Scotland. In the afternoon we went on a scavenger hunt on the seashore and found lots of interesting objects. We used these objects to decorate sandcastles at the end of the day. It was a super sunny day; we had lots of fun and learned lots.
In Maths we have been learning about solid shapes and Primary 2 have been working on the properties of these. We have a homework activity this week in which we have to look for these shapes at home.
We have been continuing with our topic this week and have learned a little more about the seaside in the past. We have been looking at the clothes people would have worn and designed our own swimming costumes for the past and present.

Good morning from Primary 1/2
This week we have been learning about the seaside in the past. We looked at old photos and discussed the differences between then and now. We will be continuing with this next week.
In Maths we have been working on money. We have set up a beach shop to buy different things for our trip to the beach. Primary 2 have been learning to add 2 items together and also give change from 20p. Primary 1 have been working on making amounts within 10p.
Next Tuesday we are going on our trip to the Seabird centre at North Berwick. We will be working with the rangers in the rockpools and hope to learn about lots of interesting creatures. Please check the weather forecast to decide on appropriate clothing for the day. It would be best if children brought a waterproof jacket but also check if sun cream is needed and apply if necessary. Wellies or old trainers would be best.

Primary 6 11.05.17
Hello everyone
We hope you have had a lovely week. This week has been an excellent week in Primary 6. The children have been working hard in all areas of the curriculum and have been impressing us all!
In maths, Miss Clark’s groups have been practising their addition and subtraction strategies. They have been using empty number lines to help them add and subtract larger numbers mentally. Ask your child to show you this at home 🙂 The children have also been working hard to say their times tables more quickly and accurately. We have been practising lots in class. Test your child at home and see what they know? 🙂 Natalia is our new “Beat the Buddy” champion! We are all very impressed with her times table knowledge!
Today in Primary 6 we had a special visit from the Primary 7 pupils who shared with us some posters and information leaflets they had created about how to be a good buddy. You’ll see some pictures of this visit below. The children received their “Buddy Booklets” today which they will be making to give to their Primary 1 buddies in June. The children are all looking forward to being buddies and we are sure they will take on their responsibilities maturely.
As part of our topic we have been learning about how we are all different and yet how we are all equally important. We have discussed certain types of disabilities and how they can impact on people’s lives. We have also discussed how we can help others who have mental, sensory or physical disabilities. The children in Miss Clark’s class have begun to research different types of disabilities so that they can create information posters for others. We look forward to seeing the final results.
In French, the children have been learning how to tell the time using o’clock and half past times. Next week we will explore the times quarter past and quarter to. The children have also been practising writing French words and phrases through the creation of calendars.

Primary 3 have a busy week ahead!
In maths we are continuing our work on division. Children will be working on ways to divide by 2, 5 and 10. Any times table practice at homework will be greatly appreciated. We are trying to make links with our times tables and work out inverse problems. We are also continuing work on telling the time but shifting our focus to digital clocks. Children will be focusing on o’clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past.
Guided reading will continue this week and the children will be given pages from their book to read at home.
In health/technology we have been discussing internet safety. Children have been able to tell us how they can stay safe online but still have fun. Children recognised the importance of not sharing personal information, sharing with parents what they are doing online and not speaking to anyone that they do not know. Children are going to be creating their very own internet safety posters.
Spelling this week- we are focusing on words starting with qu.
If the good weather keeps up we will hopefully be outside as much as we can doing P.E and continuing work on our topic!

P1/2 week beginning 8.5.17
Hello from P1/2
We have had a busy start to the term. Our Seaside topic is already underway and we have been learning about some of the creatures which live in the sea around Scotland. We have painted some of them and also written about them in our factfile. We have been reading some stories about the Lighthouse keepers lunch and have started painting a frieze for our role play area which is going to be Mr and Mrs Grinling’s cottage.
Over the next few weeks we will be working on Lighthouses and making models. If anyone has empty kitchen roll tubes these would be greatly appreciated.
In maths we have been practising our addition facts so that we can complete our sums more quickly. We have also been learning more about time. Primary 1 can now tell the time in o’clock and half past while Pimary 2 have been working on Quarter past and Quarter to. This has been quite tricky and we still need to practise this.

This week we have started our new ‘Enchanted Forest’ topic. The children have already created a fantastic display in our classroom and are looking forward to learning about woodland creatures and forest life.
As part of our ERASMUS project we will be learning about Italy this week. We will be sharing our learning with our partner schools across Europe.
Last week in maths the children learnt about fractions. They were able to talk about sharing equally and could find a half and quarter. This week we will be looking at numbers to 20, comparing size and finding odd and even numbers. Please continue to practise counting forwards and backwards to 20 at home.
We will be continuing our new homework format which was started last week. If you have any questions about this please don’t hesitate to ask.
On Wednesday we will be taking the children to the local woods to look at trees and woodland animals. Please ensure that your child comes to school with a waterproof coat and appropriate footwear.

This week our homework is changing. Your child will no longer have a key word box in their homework folder. Instead, your child will have a yellow ‘reading words’ jotter with a list of words they need to know for their reading books. Please encourage your child to learn these words over a number of weeks. We will test the children on these words regularly and highlight the words they know. Your child will also have a blue spelling homework jotter in their homework folder. This includes a ‘time you climb’ worksheet. Each child will have a number of words to learn using ‘look, say, cover, write and check’. We will be going over how to do this in class with the children, however, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
In maths this week the children will be learning about fractions. We will be finding half and a quarter of a shape. Please continue to practise counting to 20 at home as we will be continuing this after our fractions topic.
This week we will conclude our dinosaurs topic and begin learning on the ‘Enchanted Forest’. The children will be learning about forest creatures and will be taking a visit to the local woods.

Primary 3 06.03.17
Primary 3 have their Parent Assembly next Monday so we have lots to do in preparation. Children will be learning their lines, singing their Three Brave Knights song and practising small drama pieces. There will be no spelling or maths homework this week. We look forward to showing you all our assembly on Monday.
In maths we are finishing up with money and moving onto time. Please encourage your children to read and tell the time with digital and analogue clocks. We have also been doing lots of work with fractions- finding a fraction of a shape and number.
In writing we are using our imaginations to write a short story about a dragon living in a castle. Children made their dragons out of clay and used them to help write their description of their dragon. This week we are creating a backdrop for our dragons to help us describe where our stories are going to be set.
Futsal will run as normal on Tuesday in the hall so indoor P.E kits are required.

P1/2 Week beginning 27.2.17
Good morning from P1/2
Last week was the busiest week ever. We had our HMI inspection and our children were very excited to welcome the inspectors to our class. The children were very well behaved and worked hard throughout the week as always creating a very good impression so well done to you all.
Last week Miss Miller joined our class. She is a student from Edinburgh university and will be working with us till the summer.
In topic last week we were learning about the effects of the weather. We talked about how different types of weather affect us. We also learned about different weather symbols and produced our own weather forecasts.
In Maths primary 1 were learning to order, count and recognise numbers to 20. Primary 2 were learning to measure the area of objects. they enjoyed completing a challenge to see who could make a kite closest in area to 20 counters.
In writing we learned about the legend of the Kelpie and have started writing our own stories. We also made Kelpie stones out of clay.
On Thursday it will be world book day. The children have been asked to bring their favourite book to school that day to share with the class.
Remember to bring gym kit on Thursday.
