Primary 2 19/3/19

Primary 2 would like to say a huge thank you to PSA for funding some of our trip to the Zoo! Their contribution has brought the price per child down. The PSA have also paid for our Animal Man visit in the last week of term. He will come to school with a variety of animals for the children to handle carefully. We are all very excited!

Well done to Primary 2R for a fantastic assembly last week. All of the children did a super job at telling the parents what they have learned so far in our Hot and Cold Countries topic.

This week our specialist timetable is changing. We will no longer have music with Mr Shanks however the children will continue P.E with Mrs Ferguson (Thursday) and receive Art from Ms Fox (Wednesday).

Homework is due this Thursday and will be shared in class. Children received new reading books this week. Please remember to read it with your child regularly.

Permission slips and money for the Zoo trip need to be handed and Primary 2 will be taking part in the Easter egg hunt Monday 25th March so please remember to bring in £1.

Today was Comic Relief we did a lot of things. We had a bake sale and a comedy show and many other things! The bake sale was successful when selling because everybody loved all the cakes, it was a sell out! For the bake sale we raised a lot of money. Thank you so much to everyone that donated cakes, cookies, pancakes and their money! We especially liked the chocolate covered marshmallows. We held a comedy show and it was expertly hosted by Tony, Kuba and the birthday boy Ruiri. A big thank you to Erin and Kemi for putting it together. The acts were really funny and they obviously put in a lot of effort. Everybody dressed down excellently and some people really went to town with crazy hair and even crazier outfits. Comic Relief has been wonderful and we have had a fabulous time, thank you so much to everyone who has helped organise, raise money and put smiles on people’s faces.

The show is really coming on now and thank you for those who have supplied costumes so far, they’re looking fantastic. The action is going well and pupils are keeping up their enthusiasm with the songs and the performance. With the actual show fast approaching we ask that everyone be learning lines, learning lines, learning lines and learning lines. And if time can everyone be learning lines?

We have Dalguise in the coming week and so we would like to remind everyone to make sure that pupils have warm clothes, boots/ shoes that are made for walking, and that they have a black bin bag/ something to put dirty clothes in. Everyone is very excited and we know they are going to have an incredible time. Those who are not going, Mrs Hunter has some great ideas for next week and it promises to be an exciting week.

78 years ago on the nights of the 13th and 14 the March, the Scottish town of Clydebank was bombed by the Luftwaffe. More than 570 civilians were killed and 11, 350 were declared homeless. This terrible event is known as The Clydebank Blitz. As you will be aware, Primary 7 has adopted different personas when studying WW2 and many of them are from Clydebank. The pupils had made their own homes and schools etc . The attached images show what the pupils discovered on Thursday morning. Our next task is to create what happens next. The pupils have now been told if they have been evacuated, called up to one of the services or are remaining at home as an essential worker. They must use factual information and events as a basis for their biographies.

We had wacky hair styles galore in Primary 7 this morning to celebrate Red Nose day. Interesting looks indeed!

Primary 4 15.3.19

Hello everyone

We have had a very exciting week in Primary 4 this week. We have been continuing to rehearse our space assembly which we will perform to parents, families, carers and the upper school on Friday 22nd March at 9:10am. Your child should have received a letter home about this now. Please fill in the tear off slip and return to the school as soon as possible if you can attend.

Next week we will begin to hand out spelling homework again after two weeks of charting the movements of the moon. Thank you for supporting your child with this at home. It has been really interesting to hear the children’s observations of what is happening in the night sky.

This week in writing we began to write a report about The International Space Station. We were fascinated to learn about how the ISS was created and how it makes one orbit around the earth every 90 minutes! This week we wrote our introductions to the report and we will continue to work on our reports for the next few weeks.

Today we were learning about how rockets take off. We learned that hydrogen and oxygen are mixed together to create a reaction. This thrust then allows the rocket to escape the earth’s gravity and take off. The children then made their own rockets that took off into the sky. We went out into the playground and used film canisters, alka seltzer, coca cola and water to send our rockets flying into the sky! This was very exciting! Look out for a video of these rockets at our assembly next week!

Reminders:
New PE days – Indoor PE: Monday, Outdoor PE: Wednesday
Spelling homework resumes on Monday. Due in on Friday.
Reading pages to be completed at home.
Assembly letters to be returned ASAP.

Thank you for your continued support. Have a great weekend.

Lendrickmuir Day 2

Hello from P5.

Last night we played a murder mystery. The teachers and leaders were the suspects and we had to talk to them to figure out who killed Lord Mowbray.  It was fun a bit scary. Miss Millar was the murderer and we didn’t suspect that.

Today we have done so many activities. We walked to Gorge, built fires in bushcraft, climbed the low ropes, climbed a huge tree, played disk golf with frisbees and climbed on the climbing walls.

Tonight we are looking forward to playing on the inflatables.

I enjoyed walking to the gorge it was really cool that it has been there since the ice age.  Anderson

I loved tree climbing. I was the quickest to get to the top.  Bendi

I liked bouldering because I got into partners that I didn’t know very well and got to know people and it was very challenging. Alyssa

My favourite was bushcraft because I got to light a fire and I didn’t know how to do that before.  Lucas

We have had a lovely time so far and look forward to more activities tomorrow morning before returning home.                                                                    See you tomorrow.

Lendrickmuir Day 1

Hello everyone. Primary 5 have arrived safely in Lendrickmuir and have enjoyed our first day.

We went on a walk at the gorge. The water was going really fast and there was a massive waterfall.  Liam.

I went to the forest to do bushcraft which is making a fire and we heated up water to make juice.  Jack

We did archery it was really fun.  I did quite well. Anya

We played disc golf in the barn.  We had to throw frisbees into a basket.  Melissa

In the afternoon we did some problem solving in the forest.  It was really hard but we worked together and managed to solve quite a few.  Our favourite was trying to get everyone through a giant spiders web.

We we are all settled into our rooms and have enjoyed our lunch and dinner.

More information and photos to follow tomorrow.

Primary 1 were very lucky today to have a visit from 2 nurses from St John’s hospital. They talked to us about what skills you need to develop if you want to work in a hospital and brought in some of their nursing equipment for us to try out. We enjoyed checking our heart rate using a stethoscope and breathing through an oxygen mask.

Primary 2 11.3.19

Primary 2 have been busy learning about the desert and this week we are going to be learning about Africa and the animals that live in Africa. Primary 2R will be sharing some of their learning at their class assembly tomorrow so we look forward to welcoming you to school tomorrow. Some children received letters about a costume, please remember to send them in with their assembly clothes tomorrow.

In Maths this week we are going to be learning about symmetry. We will be focusing on finding one line of symmetry on a variety of different shapes and objects. Encourage your child to explain what the term symmetry means- can you find any lines of symmetry in the house?

Primary 2 have been invited to the Red Nose Day assembly on Friday. We will be watching a comedy show, dressing crazy and trying to create a big castle from our red nose day boxes. Friday is also Miss Henderson’s last day in Primary 2R. We will be sad to see her leave but we wish her all the best in her future teaching career. The children have loved having her in class! She will be joining us again for our class trip to the Zoo in April.

Our specialist timetable is changing shortly and Primary 2 will be receiving Art lessons from Ms Fox and P.E lessons from Mrs Ferguson. (our P.E will move from Wednesday to Thursday)

Homework was issued today and it is due back Thursday 21st March. Please remember to come to school with a water bottle and indoor shoes.

Thanks, Miss Rafferty and Mrs Muir

Primary 5 Week beginning 8.03.19

Thank you to everyone who came to our assembly last week.  We enjoyed performing for you and hope you enjoyed learning all about the Scottish Wars of Independence as much as we did.

On Monday some parents came to join in with our number talks where we were learning different strategies for mental addition.

This week in Science we have started our topic on Solids, liquids and gases.  We completed an investigation on how solids react to water.  We made predictions and then checked the results.  In writing we wrote a report about it.

In reading we have started a mini topic on poetry.  This week we read a poem called morning and wrote our own poems.

This term we have started learning Spanish.  We can already say our name, talk about feelings and greet someone in Spanish.

In Maths we have been working on division.

Next week some of us are going to Lendrick Muir.  We are looking forward to this and hope to update you everyday on our activities so keep an eye out for more news next week.

We are also going on a trip the Bannockburn to complete our topic.

Primary 1 have had a really busy and exciting week. On Tuesday, we celebrated Pancake Day. Mrs Steel made a pancake in front of the class, we measured the flour, milk, eggs and oil and watched and listened as it sizzled and cooked on the pan. We wrote instructions so that we can make pancakes at home.
On Wednesday we went on a class trip to Our Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh. We enjoyed walking around the exhibition seeing how the parts of the Earth were formed through ice movement and volcanoes. We then went to a dinosaurs workshop where we learnt all about the triceratops, velociraptor and anchiosaurus. We were able to touch models of dinosaur claws, feet and teeth as well as look at fossilized dinosaur poo!
Yesterday we celebrated World Book Day. The children read their favourite book with their Primary 7 buddy and made a bookmark to take home.
Reminders: Next week there will be no PE on Thursday. We will be in contact again next week with the new PE day week beginning 18th March.
Thank you for your support

Primary 3 8.3.19

Thank you to everyone who brought in their favourite book today for World Book Day.

We loved seeing all of the different books and in Primary 3, we had recipe books, fact books, story books, picture books, pocket books and poem books! It was so interesting hearing about why these were your favourite, and we enjoyed learning from the Primary 5s what theirs were too.

We began having a look at our class Parent Assembly on knights and castles today and we are beginning to hand out parts. We will have these out by Monday next week. Please keep an eye out for these and help your child to learn their words. We are very excited to share with you what we have been learning. The date for your diaries is Friday the 29th March. Letters about this will follow.

Next week primary 6 are hosting a bake sale to raise money for Comic Relief. This will happen on Thursday 14th. Also, on Friday the 15th, it will be a dress down day, with the theme “Crazy Hair/ Crazy Dress” and they ask a donation of 50p is brought in on this day. We have a number of other things happening in school for this as well and P6 have been working hard to make it an enjoyable day for all whilst raising money for this great cause.

Please could P3 ask for children to bring in a stick from home next week. This will be used for us to make a bow and arrow set and complete some science investigations with them. Any stick from outside will do, as long as it is strong.

Letters will be handed out soon for our up coming trip as well, so please keep an eye out for these in bags. We are heading to Edinburgh Castle on the 20th of March as a nice finish to our castles topic.

Thank you for your continued support,

Miss Smith, Mrs Smith and Ms Matheson

We celebrated World Book Day by having a shared reading session with our P1 buddies. The P7s did an imaginative job of bringing characters to life and those reading nonfiction delivered and discussed facts in a stimulating ways. Well done P7 !

Our rehearsals are going well and our choreography team are in full force!.

LEARNING SCRIPTS * LEARNING SCRIPTS* LEARNING SCRIPTS

Please help our P7s to learn their words. The countdown is on and we need pupils to be able to deliver their lines without relying on their scripts. Many thanks to those who have sent in show costumes already.

We are continuing with our investigation of shapes and we have been learning to describe the various properties of individual shapes . Please quiz you child and ask them to list a variety of properties of any household item .

We would like to remind everyone to return slips regarding our coffee afternoon next Tuesday. The event provides a great opportunity to ask question of the visiting Deans staff with regards to transition.

Primary 4 6.3.19

Hello everyone

This week has been a busy but fun one in Primary 4 so far. The children worked well in groups to make excellent mind maps about each of the 8 planets in the solar system. Each group focused on one planet and finding out particular facts about it including how many moons it had, how far the planet is from the sun and who the planet was named after. They then taught the rest of the class about their planet by presenting their mind map to the class. The class then took notes on each planet and each child now has a solar system book that they have designed themselves using their notes. Well done everyone 🙂

Tomorrow we are visiting P2 for World Book Day. Primary 2 will be sharing their favourite book with us and some activities that they have been doing in class. Primary 4 will also be sharing their favourite books with Primary 2. We will also share books that we have created in class.

Today was our last day of PE with Mrs Ferguson in Primary 4. We’d like to thank Mrs Ferguson for all she has taught the children this year. Starting next week both sessions of PE will take place with your child’s class teacher. Indoor PE will now be on a Monday and Outdoor PE will now be on Wednesday. We will remind the children of this and it will be written in their homework diaries next week.

We have begun the process of planning our assembly which will take place on Friday 22nd March. We look forward to inviting you to join P4 in exploring their learning related to our topic of Space. The children chose to learn about this topic and they are very enthusiastic about it. We can’t wait to show you what we have learned. Please look out for speaking parts or information about costumes in your child’s homework diary.

Reminders –
Your child has a moon record in their spelling homework jotter. Please encourage your child to look up at the sky each night and record what they can see. Remember – if the moon isn’t visible encourage your child to look at stars or other objects in the sky and look for anything interesting. There will be no spelling homework for two weeks so that your child can focus on this task. We will continue to work on spelling/phonics revision in class.

Red Nose Day celebrations begin next Thursday with a bake sale in the afternoon. There will be a talent show assembly held on Friday and a dress down day on Friday to raise money too.

Thank you for all of your support.

Miss Clark & Miss Donaldson

Primary 2 4.3.19

Primary 2 have a busy week of learning ahead!

We did some successful reports about the desert last week. The children had to think about an interesting title, draw a labelled picture and write facts under two or three subheadings. The children were full of facts and managed to create some fantastic reports which are now displayed in class. We are continuing our report writing this week about desert animals. We will be learning about camels and desert snakes!

In numeracy we are learning about estimating. The children will be trying to estimate roughly where a particular number falls on the number line. We will also be working out numbers half way between. To help support your child in this you could work on forward and backward number sequences up to 100.

Tuesday 5th March is Shove Tuesday so the children are going to be learning about Lent and Shrove Tuesday. We might even be able to indulge in some tasty pancakes!

Primary 2R need to continue to practise their assembly lines and songs. Letters will come home if your child requires a costume.

Homework is due on Thursday 7th March. The children will share their work with a friend in class.

On Thursday we will also be celebrating World Book day- Primary will be sharing their favourite book with Primary 4 boys and girls. So please remember to bring in your favourite book on Thursday!

Miss Rafferty and Mrs Muir

Primary 6

This week in Primary 6 we have been working very hard in the show which is coming along very well. Thank you very much for the effort that has been put in so far! We hope that everyone has been learning their lines and been busy singing the songs with the same enthusiasm at home as they are at school! It is starting to take shape and we are very appreciative of all the costume help the children have had so far, thanks very much!

In maths we have been continuing to work on decimals, fractions and percentages with a particular focus on making sure we link the three concepts together, working on division, division, division!  We have also continued to work on data handling with a focus on pie charts.

We have started our recount writing and this will be our focus for the rest of the term. In reading can we make sure that the literacy circles homework is complete by Mondays as they need to have completed the work to take part in meaningful discussion. Some of the conversations we have heard throughout the literacy circles work have been great and it’s nice to hear different views, lots of questions and enjoyment of the book.

There was lots of sportsmanship and good skills on show in our basketball games and it was a chance for teams to work together and encourage each other and it was lovely to see the games played in the right spirit.

And a massive congratulations to the hard work of the Euro-quiz team and Mrs Hunter for the effort they put in and they did us so proud in the actual competition, well done!

Reminders:

PE: Monday and Thursday

Spelling: Fridays

Literacy Circles: Mondays

Maths: Day dependant on class (unfortunately using Education City as a homework tool did not work)

Thanks, Mr Woodward and Mrs Hunter

Primary 7 – 01/03/19

What a jammed packed day we had on Tuesday when we had a visit from Homefront Histories! Our large hall was transformed into the 1940’s and the pupils were set a variety of challenges to complete. Our day was punctuated with a number of stops as we had to run to our air raid shelter as the siren sounded! We have added a selection of pictures below.

The pupils have made a good start of their WW2 challenge, with all topics selected. We would advise that if the children are using the internet for research purposes at home that they use a child friendly search engine such as Kiddle. Some of the images and information relating to WW2 subjects can be disturbing. Please monitor the sources used.

Letters have now been sent home with pupils who require specific items for their show costumes. Your help with this is greatly appreciated as always.

When we started our literature circle project, the pupils were given a choice of novels. We thought it would be a good idea for the pupils to share their thoughts of the novels they have chosen. It may entice others to read some of the alternative choices independently.

This week’s blurb was written by Dorka, Megan, Bendi, Heather and Nathan.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

By John Boyne

This full–of–drama novel puts you in the shoes of nine year old Bruno whose love of exploration gets him in all kinds of trouble. The question filled little boy gets the reader asking questions with him; why did we have to move? Why do we have a father called the commandant? What are all the people in striped pyjamas doing on the other side of the fence? Soon he meets a friend on the other side of the fence and even more questions come up.

EuroQuiz

Carmondean PS EuroQuiz Team, 2019

Our Primary 6 EuroQuiz team came up against stiff opposition from another 20 West Lothian Schools this morning at the West Lothian round of the national EuroQuiz at Howden Park Centre. The questions were very tough – most adults could NOT have answered quite a few of them – but the team put in a creditable performance and did not let us down. Many congratulations to the eventual winners, Linlithgow Primary School and the Runners up, Saint Nicholas Primary, Broxburn and a very big ‘Thank You’ to Mrs Hunter who took on the mammoth task of  training the team. Well done guys, we are proud of you!
