It’s been another great week in PE. P6 have been working on their rhythmic gymnastics skills and put a sequence together with a partner. This video is a fantastic example of their work.
Primary 5
P5 have been selling Children in Need wristbands each morning for £1 or £1.50. Sales are going well and we are nearly sold out. Thank you to everyone for supporting this good cause. Tomorrow the school will hold a dress down day. The theme will be dress up as Pudsey or Blush, wear pyjamas, come as a superhero, wear yellow or wear spots. We are looking forward to seeing everyone in their Children in Need inspired outfits.
In topic we are continuing with our Money, Money, Money enterprise topic. This week the children have decided on a company name and designed a logo. They are now creating posters to advertise their stall and the product they are going to sell. Each group has written a business plan so they know what order to complete their enterprise activity in. Our resources have started to arrive and the children are very eager to begin making their products next week. I think you will be impressed with the ideas and creativity each group has shown.
The children have been writing persuasive pieces about litter and the problems it causes our community. They came up with a lot of good arguments and we think that they got their point across very well.
In assembly we had visitors who spoke about the importance of the 3 Rs- Reduce, Re-use, and Recycle. The children seemed to be very knowledgeable about this. Our Eco committee are doing a survey at the moment about how much plastic is used during lunch time. We have been surprised at the amount of plastic collected. Look out for more information coming home about this soon.

P4 update 14.11.19
We’ve had another busy week in primary 4.
We are continuing to work on our persuasive writing techniques and the children have written letters to the European Space Agency to persuade them that children should be allowed to go to space! They were also very excited when they got the extra break they had asked for in their previous persuasive writing lesson. The power of persuasive writing!
We are enjoying our space topic and have been amazed by how many interesting and thought-provoking questions the children have been coming up with about space and stars in particular. We have started learning about the life cycle of a star and have also found out about the eight phases of the moon. This will explain why your child might be very interested in looking at the moon and is making comments like, “That’s a waxing gibbous!” or “That’s a waning crescent!”.
In numeracy we are continuing to work on our times tables and division and this week are working on dividing by 6. We are getting really good at using our strategies to help us.
Dress Down Day
Don’t forget that we are supporting Children in Need tomorrow with our Dress Down Day. Children can come dressed in yellow, spots, in their PJs or as a superhero. If they do, please could they make a donation of at least 50p to Children in Need.
Reminders:
PE is still on a Tuesday and a Thursday but will change in a couple of weeks (we will let you know on the blog).
Homework will be given out on a Wednesday and is to be handed in on the Monday (almost two weeks later). Please could you send in the homework share it jotters and reading books daily however as we will use them in class.
Please provide a water bottle every day.
Thanks for your support,
Mrs Muir and Miss Clark.
Primary 1 News
The children have been learning about the sound ‘g’ and ‘l’ this week in phonics. They practised forming these letters correctly on whiteboards and were introduced to the common words ‘go’, ‘got’ and ‘get’. They made lions, lollipops and autumn creatures with leaves from the playground and practised writing ‘l’ on their designs. In reading this week they have been learning about the features of their book. The children discussed the title, the author and blurb of the book and where you can find them. They answered comprehension questions and predicted what was going to happen in their book by looking at the pictures.
In maths we have been learning all about money. The children have been learning to describe the colour, shape and size of coins and how they are similar/ different from one another. They have been ordering and sorting these coins and have been enjoying playing coin games on Topmarks on the smartboard.
This week, the children have been learning all about toys. The children have been role playing in the Toy Shop and have been using coins to pay for teddy bears. They were introduced to the story of Mr Krinkles and talked about how the character in the story felt. The children have also been learning about autumn and collected things from the Nursery Garden to make a bird feeder. They enjoyed working together as part of a team to create their feeders.
Primary 1 were delighted to find out their role in the Nativity! If your child has a speaking part, we encourage you to help them practise their lines at home to make sure they are ready for rehearsals!
Please ensure that homework folders are brought in every day so that children have their reading books and that homework can be handed out when required.
Thank you for your ongoing support!

A tree has sprouted in Primary 7 ! When completing challenges and activities in class, we are focusing on particular skills we have used. We know we will use such skills throughout our lives so we are developing firm routes. At the end of each week we use coloured stickers to mark the skills we feel we have been using.
We have attached a picture of a sign that is displayed in primary 7. It reinforces the message we give to pupils regarding social media. We would like to highlight that the legal age recommendation for using Snapchat and Facebook is 13. Within our health and wellbeing lessons, we continually remind pupils about the responsibilities which go along with using such communication tools .We fully appreciate that the use of certain social media site are completely out with the schools parameters, however, we would like to point out that any negative use can affect the class ethos .We would ask that all parents support us in highlighting the guidelines for responsible use. Many Thanks.
Jam Jar Appeal!!
For our Enterprise topic we need lots of clean jam jars with lids. If you can – please send any in to Primary 7 who will be very grateful!
Thank you in advance

Primary 3
Following on from the quitting of our brown pencils last week, there have been further cases of items quitting the class. On Tuesday all the chairs in Primary 3 decided they had had enough and quit, parking themselves in the back of the classroom and taping themselves off until they received a full apology from the pupils. The writing of the apologies went well, although some pupils had to verbally apologise to get their chairs back, but in the end all chairs were returned safely, hoping that they won’t be taking for granted again.
We have been continuing with our book for this term, The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark and we had a great discussion about fears, what kinds of things frighten us, what kinds of things used to frighten us and how we can maybe overcome our fears. Needless to say there are lots of brave P3s who don’t mind sharing their fears and are brave enough to overcome them!
In topic we have been learning to write our name in Braille. We learned about the life of Louis Braille and why and how he came up with Braille and the pupils got a chance to create their names in Braille using lentils and plenty of glue, they are looking fantastic!
Reminders:
Poppies and Children in Need bands are on sale now, poppies are a donation of minimum 50p, Children in Need bands are between £1 and £1.50. There will also be a dress down day on Friday 15th November for 50p which will go towards Children in Need.

Last call for Aldi stickers
The in store sticker promotion has now stopped but we are asking everyone to check purses & wallets for anymore stickers to see if we can complete a second poster before Monday.
We need to send the poster away on Tuesday so this really is the last call for stickers.
Thanks so much for all your help and support so far.

In topic we continued with our Money, Money, Money enterprise topic where the children will be working in groups to create items to sell at the Christmas Fair. The children have organised their groups and have decided on the product they wish to make and sell at the Fair. They also had to compile a shopping list of items they required and how much they would cost. Next week they are going to start making their products. Let the chaos begin!
P5 have been selling Children in Need wristbands each morning for £1 or £1.50. Sales are going well. On Friday 15th November the school will hold a dress down day. The theme will be dress up as Pudsey or Blush, wear pyjamas, come as a superhero, wear yellow or wear spots.
In science the children learned about Scottish endangered animals. They have chosen the animal they wish to create a fact file about. They will complete this in class but can do some of the research at home. When we have completed the fact files the children will then present the information as a class talk. Look out for the instruction sheet about this coming home next week.
Any visitors in school have commented on the landmark models displayed in the corridor. They have been a big talking point when the children are passing by. The models will come home soon.

Primary 2 4.11.19
Primary 2 are well under way with their new topic: People Who Help Us! Last week we were learning about the role of a Police Officer and how they help and support the local community. This week we are learning about Paramedics. We are very excited about a Paramedic coming to visit our classes to talk to the children, and hopefully they will be able to bring an ambulance to school so the children can see what it is like inside. We are going to think of some very interesting questions to ask our paramedic too!
We have started learning some of the songs for our Nativity this year! Primary 2 will be partnering up with Primary 3 to put on quite a show! Parts, words and song words will be issued in the next couple of week so please look out for these.
New homework activities are being issued today. Thank you so much to all the boys and girls who managed to complete their homework activities and share them with the class. Some of the work and effort has been fantastic! There has been some activities been set on Education City for the children too. Usernames and Passwords were handed out at the beginning of the year.
Primary 7 are coming round with poppies this week for a small donation and Primary 5 will be selling Children in Need merchandise soon.

Primary 7 01.11.19
This week some of our primary 7’s took part in the ‘Creation Station’. Here is what they have to share:
On Tuesday 15 of us went to the art room for a robotics workshop. everyone wrote their names on a piece of sticky paper. Then we decorated a paper cup and put three pens on the cups with tape. Next we put a battery with wires on the top of the cup to make it vibrate. It was then motorised so when we attached a wooden peg on to the battery, the robotic model started to move. We had already taken the three lids off the pens, enabling the pens to move across the paper and form a colourful picture. We had a great time and were excited to share our work with the rest of our class. Written by Ruiri, Jack, Reuben and Willow
In numeracy we have been using BODMAS to help us to answer complex sums which include brackets, square numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division! In maths we have been focusing on identifying and plotting coordinates.
In health we have been looking at the Eatwell plate and learning about each section. We had to become an expert in a certain section and teach each other about the foods, recommended portion sizes and nutrients found in these foods. Next week we will continue to focus on the Eatwell plate and use our knowledge to help us with our tasks!
For My Life So Far we planned our ‘school’ section. We noted down our teachers, topics and memories that we wish to include in our projects. Please continue to work on gathering information and working on your MLSF at home.
On Tuesday next week we will be embarking on our first Transition morning to Deans Community High School. We are looking forward to visiting different departments and taking part in a range of lessons! We will let you know how we get on next week!

Primary 3
There was a shocking incident at the beginning of the week when Miss Smith’s hairdryer refused to work for her. She had to write a letter to persuade it to work again. Then all of Mr Woodward’s brown colouring pencils up and left the pencil tray. They were not happy at being underused and so have quit until further notice. The pupils wrote letters to try and coax them back but so far only a small few have returned. Primary 3 have been working hard on their persuasive writing so hopefully with enough persuasion the rest of the brown pencils will be convinced to return soon. There have been continuing reports of various items quitting on the children e.g. scarves.
We have begun our book study for this term which is ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark’. So far we have looked at what makes an effective front cover and what are the vital elements of a front cover. We got some fantastic imaginings of what the front cover might look like before the big reveal of the actual front cover of the story.
Continuing on in our Inclusion topic we had a very practical session all about the five senses. In our listening circle activity we have some pupils who hear like bats, some fantastic listeners! They also had a go at trying to read Braille which was very tricky and there were some very creative translations. They were very brave in jumping in nose first into our smelling challenge, not holding back at all. While there were some nice smells, like mint and lavender, vinegar proved to be the worst smelling offender. Although there were a couple of pupils who decided the vinegar smelled like feet!
In line with our inclusion topic we were wondering if there are any of you that are involved in local charities that would like to come in and teach us about their charities and what kinds of things they do? Or if there is any more information that could be passed on to us about local charities and who to contact/ any leaflets/ etc that would be greatly appreciated! If so please get in touch with the office and they can pass info on to us.

The last week in October has been a busy time in P5. Look out for the class newsletter which tells you all about the exciting activities we have planned for this term.
On Monday the children wrote persuasive pieces of writing to convince Miss Millar to display their models for our visitors. The children were able to use persuasive words and phrases to put across their reasons. We are pleased to report that all children were able to persuade Miss Millar that their models should be displayed. Look out for these around the school.
On Wednesday P5 organised Children in Need fundraising activities for the whole school to take part in. They will sell the wristbands each morning for £1 or £1.50. On Friday 15th November they decided to hold a dress down day. The theme will be dress up as Pudsey or Blush, wear pyjamas, come as a superhero, wear yellow or wear spots. Some children ambitiously thought they could come wearing all the themes. Good Luck with that!
In science we have started our endangered animal topic. The children learned about which animals are in danger of becoming extinct. They will be choosing a Scottish endangered animal to research and create a fact file all about it. They will do some of this research at home.
In Spanish, we have learned to greet each other and have now started learning the days of the week. Sábado and Domingo are definitely the best days! Ask your child why. We also started sound editing in ICT using the Audacity sound editing programmme. This was a very popular activity and everyone was engaged throughout.
In topic we have started our Money, Money, Money enterprise topic where the children will be working in groups to create items to sell at the Christmas Fair. Look out for more information about this coming home soon.

The primary ones are all very excited for Halloween tomorrow! We will be learning more about it and will hopefully do a few crafts in the afternoon to celebrate!
This week we have been consolidating all the letters we have learnt so far. The children are making great progress writing these sounds, recognising them and identifying words with each sound at the beginning. The children are beginning to blend the sounds they know together to make short words. Thank you for all the work you have been doing at home to practise this with the sound cards in the homework.
In maths we have been continuing our work on addition. The children have now learnt to write sums using the add sign and equals sign. We are still using concrete materials to assist our addition so if you are practising at home please remember to give your child objects to support the sum.
Tomorrow we will be taking the children to the nursery garden for outdoor learning. Please send your children to school with wellies and a warm coat.
Thank you for all your support. As always, we are available before and after school if you have any questions.

Primary 4 30.10.19
Hello everyone
We have had a fun, busy week in Primary 4. In numeracy we have been revising our knowledge of the 8 times table and we have introduced division by 8 facts. The children were able to notice the similarities between the times table facts and division facts. We will continue to consolidate this knowledge using a variety of strategies in class.
In writing, we have been continuing to write persuasive letters. This week the children wrote letters to their families at home (keep your eyes peeled for copies of these letters coming home in school bags!) The children’s job was to convince their families to allow them to watch their favourite movie at home. The children had great ideas on how to convince you!
In French Miss Carrigan and Mrs Muir have been teaching the children about weather. The children have revised different weather vocabulary. They have now begun to have a short conversation about the weather including information about the seasons. This was very tricky at first but the children worked very hard to pronounce the different vocabulary correctly. We will continue to work more on this in class.
Tomorrow we will be visiting Craigswood Sports Centre to take part in the local Cluster’s handball tournament. Children should come to school dressed in their PE kit and can stay in their kit for the rest of the day. We are looking forward to watching the children further develop the skills that they have learned with Mrs Ferguson in PE lessons.
Homework is due in tomorrow. Please see the class newsletter that will be coming home shortly for more information about homework. Remember only starred activities need to be completed. Each child should now have a reading book. Please encourage your child to bring their reading book to school each day as we use these during reading lessons. Children also have the opportunity to read their reading pages with a partner, an adult or by themselves each day in class.
Reminders – Indoor PE: Thursday
Outdoor PE: Tuesday

Primary 2 Update
Welcome back everyone! We hope you had a great October break.
We have had a busy first week back in Primary 2.
In Numeracy this week we continued to work on estimating numbers on a numberline and in Maths we learned how to draw a line of symmetry on pictures of everyday objects.
In Writing, we are continuing our focus on persuasive pieces and the children prepared fabulous posters to advertise the Halloween Disco. They used persuasive language very well to convey their message!
The children who made it along to the Halloween Disco looked fantastic and as you can see had a great time!
Also this week we have started our new topic – People who Help Us. We discussed the children’s interests and questions to help plan our learning. They showed great interest in the role of a Police Officer so this will be our focus this week.
Please remember After School Clubs begin this coming week (w/b 28.10) for children who have signed up for and had a letter confirming a place at a club.
Thank you for your continuing support,
Mrs Oliver, Miss Rafferty and Miss Pringle
Primary 5
We hope you all had a lovely and well deserved holiday. The children have come back raring to go!
It has been a busy week of cooking in P5. The children have participated in making leek and potato soup and champ (potatoes and spring onion) in preparation for our open morning. Hopefully you were able to taste food from Scotland (haggis and Irn Bru), England (scones, jam and cream), Wales (Leek and potato soup) and Northern Ireland (champ).
P5 had a Tae Kwon Do taster session this week. The children enjoyed learning about the different skills needed and carrying out some of the drills.
Both classes watched the Spiderwick Chronicles film. We then discussed the similarities and differences between the film and the book. We decided there were many!
Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our Landmark open morning. The children were very excited to showcase their models. We hope you agree that they have worked very hard and the detail on some of them was amazing! The other classes also got a chance to see these on Thursday and left us some wonderful comments. Thank you for all your support in helping the children to produce such outstanding models!

A Well-Dresssed Halloween
Our Halloween Parties turned out to be outstanding successes last night with an amazing turnout of children ‘dressed to kill’! A huge thank you to our Parent Staff Association, for organising this hugely anticipated event, and to the small army of parent helpers, who came along and ran the parties. A great time was had by all – even the children. Pictured above are our costume parade winners from Primaries 1-3 and 4-7.
Primary 3
Welcome back to everyone in Primary 3 after a well-deserved week off. The pupils have come back with a lot of enthusiasm and they have certainly hit the ground running. With Summer Winter having gone home now, we had a little more of our weather topic to finish off, involving some water balloons and a kettle. We looked at how and why water changes from one state to another and there were some great answers and speculation as to what we were going to use the kettle for, rest assured no balloons were put in the kettle to ‘see what would happen’!
We made a start to our new topic for this term which will be focussed on Inclusion, what it means, how we can include people in school and how the community helps those that need it; beginning with a particular focus on the 5 senses. We have already had some good discussions about what inclusion might mean and some very inquisitive questions that we will hopefully find the answers to over the course of the term.
We have also started our new maths topic which will be money and the pupils were excited to work with the coins to help them solve problems. They were slightly less excited when they found out it wasn’t real money.

Carmondean Football Team
Last night was the first of our league tournaments played in lovely sunny, if cold, conditions up at DCH. The team played fantastically together and the teamwork, communication and skill were evident in all four of our games. It was fantastic to see how hard the players worked for each other and how well they helped each other on the pitch, showing great passing and movement as well as covering for each other when defending. Everyone got game time and the rotation of players didn’t slow the momentum, showing what a great squad that we have. Unfortunately we were not able to bring along all of the players that have been training with us but they will be taking part in future matches and I am sure they will add to the quality we already have. In terms of results we won our first three games, with some superb goals, and we drew our last game. They were all very competitive matches and it was a fantastic start to the season for Carmondean, well done to everyone that took part!
