Primary 1 11.12.19

Primary 1 have been very busy in the run up to Christmas! Earlier this week they had their first nativity dress rehearsal in front of an audience. They preformed brilliantly and were proud to show what they have been working on to others in the school. We have watched the Primary 2 and 3’s nativity this week as well. Our Christmas party is next Thursday, the 19th December. It will be in the afternoon and children can come to school with party clothes to change into after lunch or they can go home for lunch and come back dressed for the afternoon.

This week in maths we have been learning about shape. We have explored 2D shapes, specifically circles, squares, triangles and rectangles. Primary 1 enjoyed describing the different shapes to each other and are becoming more familiar with them. Today and tomorrow we are going to be looking at 3D shapes. As part of this, we will be describing and sorting everyday objects.

In writing, we have been continuing to remember our full stops, capital letters and to spell some common words correctly. We are using the sounds that we have been learning in phonics to help us. Last week we wrote a letter to Santa and this week we are going to be writing an invitation to our nativity.

We have a whole school talent show next Monday and the children have been busy practising their songs. Each Primary 1 class are singing a different Christmas song, the children have the option to take part in the performance. It is Christmas jumper day and so the children are welcome to come to school wearing a Christmas jumper that day.

Homework was handed out last week for the final time this term, it is due in next Monday 16th December. The children have also been given their new reading books for this week. Please continue to practise reading at home.

Thank you for your support.

The Primary 1 teachers.

Primary 4 9.12.19

Hello everyone

It is the start of our second last week of term and we are now very busy in the run up to Christmas. Today we are going to watch the P1 nativity dress rehearsal and tomorrow we will watch the P2/3 nativity dress rehearsal. Wednesday is our Christmas party. It will take place all afternoon and children can bring party clothes to school to change into or they can go home for lunch and come back dressed for the afternoon.

In RME we have been learning about the Christmas story. The children learned about King Herod’s role in the story and the importance of this. Through drama the children were able to act as different characters in the nativity story. They could also ask the different characters questions in order to learn more about the nativity story.

In numeracy the children have worked hard to begin learning the 6, 7, 8 and 9 times tables and their related division facts this term. This week we will begin to work on multiplying larger numbers before revising all that we have learned next week. After the Christmas holidays we will begin to look at fractions in numeracy.

One of our PE days has changed. Indoor PE with Mrs Ferguson will now be on a Wednesday. The other session of PE will continue to take place on Tuesdays. The children have also begun to have Art lessons with Ms Fox on a Wednesday.

Homework was handed out last week for the final time this term. It is due in next Monday 16th December. Starred activities must be completed and the rest are optional.

Thank you for your support. Have a lovely week.

Miss Clark & Mrs Muir

Primary 6 6.12.19

Primary 6 have had an exciting week beginning our RME topic on Advent.  We went to the church where we took part in activities called Bubblegum and Fluff.  We learned about the true meaning of Christmas and made lovely tiles with Christmas symbols on them.  They will be coming home today.

In topic we learned about the sinking of the Titanic and took notes to create a timeline of events.

In science we have been looking at renewable energy and have started researching the different types and their benefits to the environment.

In Numeracy we have been working on multiplication.  Some of us would really benefit from revising our tables to enable us to complete tricky calculations more accurately.

In Maths we have been calculating the perimeter of 2D shapes.

We have continued to work on persuasive language this week are have planned a letter to tell Santa how ‘good’ we have been.

Next week we have our Christmas party on Monday.  Remember that children can bring party clothes to school to change into or go home for lunch and change there.

Outdoor PE moves back to Thursday next week.

Mrs Jamieson, Mrs Smith,  Ms Mathieson

Primary 3

We started the week in Primary 3 with a visit from the Panto. They put on a brilliant performance of Mother Goose that had all of the children thoroughly entertained! We have continued to work on our own show, our Nativity, and it is getting better and better with each practice – we are looking forward to our dress rehearsal next week when the children can get into costume and show the rest of the school the product of all their hard work.

We have continued to work on The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark and this week we have been looking at a Story Mountain. We have talked about the key ingredients for a story and how going through a story is like climbing a mountain, nice at first, getting harder and more action packed, and then overcoming the story obstacles and arriving at happy endings. In our writing we have continued to write persuasively, this week saw a plea from the pupils to Summer Winter. Some pupils asked Summer Winter for snow for Christmas while others asked her to bring back the sun and the warmth. No matter which side of the discussion the pupils were on their writing was very good.

We have been building up to our P3 party by practising some traditional Christmas songs. We looked at the Military Two Step and the Canadian Barn Dance and the pupils danced with enthusiasm and a lot of energy! In topic Miss Smith’s class looked at the differences between needs and wants, having some great discussions about what they are and if they were marooned on a desert island which items would they need and why. There were some great debates and the pupils were able to recognise what is really important.

Primary 5

Thank you to everyone who came to the Christmas Fair. The children all did very well selling their products and many stalls sold out! The children seemed to enjoy the experience greatly and organised their rota very well considering we had so many children ill that week who were unable to attend. Thank you again for supporting this event and making P5 enterprise such a success.

Both classes enjoyed the pantomime, Mother McGoose, on Monday. There was lots of audience participation and the children laughed at all the jokes.

Primary 5 will be singing at the beginning of the P1 and P2/3 Nativities. The children have been learning the words and they are sounding good already. We also have a solo performer, who has been working with Mr Shanks, and rehearsals have been going very well.

In science the children are making good progress with their fact files on their chosen endangered animal. They have found lots of interesting facts and pictures.

Primary 5 have started art lessons with our specialist teacher Ms Fox. They will be creating faces and figures connected to our next topic The Scottish Wars of Independence.

On Tuesday 10th December P5 will have their Christmas party at 1.15pm. If your child is not going home for lunch they can bring in their party clothes in a named bag and get changed at lunch time. The excitement is building!

Primary 7 05.12.19

After weeks of dedication and planning Primary 7 Enterprise at the Christmas Fair on Friday was huge success. All the pupils worked their socks off at their stalls and made an outstanding profit of £335.09!

On Tuesday we delivered our assembly to the whole school. It went absolutely brilliantly, everyone enjoyed it and our mashup sounded fantastic. Our message to the school was to think less about what you want and more about want you would like to give or do for others.

On Wednesday two teachers from Deans Community High School came to visit us. They talked to us about the three types of science – chemistry, biology and physics. We took part in a chemistry experiment where we had to precisely put 10 drops of potassium iodide and 10 drops of lead nitrate together in a test tube. When mixed these two liquids turned yellow instantly. We then used filter paper in a funnel to separate the solids from the liquids which were created by mixing the two liquids together. We are really excited to take part in more science experiments in the future!

The company who make our Primary 7 leavers hoodies have a competition running this month. The first prize is money towards our order. The competition involves us redesigning Santa’s uniform. We have come up with some really great ideas and look forward to sending these away in the hopes of winning!

Primary 4 29.11.19

Hello everyone

We have had a very busy week in Primary 4. We have been working hard on learning our Scottish song for today’s St Andrew’s Day assembly. We were working hard to learn “Bananas are the best” and the children performed very well today. Well done everyone.

Our thoughts now turn towards Christmas. Tonight is the Christmas Fair and we are looking forward to seeing many of you there. The Fair runs from 6 until 8pm and you can buy tickets at the door. In class we have been learning about the Christian story of Christmas. The children learned about the important role that King Herod played in this story and made story boards to showcase their learning.

In school next week we are very excited to watch a Panto in the big hall. We are also looking forward to our delicious Christmas lunch on Tuesday. Remember – if your child has not ordered a Christmas lunch then they should bring a packed lunch to school with them on Tuesday.

Homework is due in on Monday and we will hand out new reading books to some groups and new homework on Wednesday. The next set of homework will be due on Monday 16th December and this will be the last piece of homework before the Christmas holidays. Please remember that only the starred activities must be completed. Thank you.

We would also like to say thank you to all the boys and girls who have already presented their class talks. We can really tell that the children have worked so hard on preparing them. Thank you as well for all of your support in working with the children on these at home. It is very much appreciated. Anyone who has not already presented their class talk will do so next week.

*IMPORTANT*

PE days have now changed. PE with Mrs Ferguson will now take place on a WEDNESDAY instead of a Thursday as before. The other session of PE with Miss Clark and Mrs Muir will still take place on a Tuesday.

The children will also begin to work with Ms Fox on a Wednesday in Art.

Thank you for all of your support. Have a lovely weekend.

Primary 6 News

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…………!

Starting with our Christmas Fair this evening from 6pm to 8pm. You can get your tickets on the door and we are looking forward to a festive fun fuelled evening!

Next week P6 will be enjoying a bit of panto action (oh no they won’t! oh yes they will!) followed by a visit to the church to learn about the real meaning of Christmas.

Our outdoor PE next week will take place on Wednesday 4th December instead of a Thursday just for that week though and then it will continue on a Thursday as normal.

This week we have been filming ourselves using persuasive techniques to advertise our Christmas Fair as well as designing posters to persuade people to sail on the Titanic.

In Numeracy we have been solving measure problems which have proved a little tricky for some especially when you have to convert the measure before solving the problem. We have also been looking at Multiplication.

In Science we have been learning about renewable and non-renewable energy and the impact it is having on our environment. We are looking forward to developing our knowledge and understanding of sustainability over the next few weeks.

Have a lovely weekend!

Mrs Smith, Ms Matheson & Mrs Jamieson

Primary 3

In Primary 3 we have been continuing our push for persuasion and have been creating colourful and persuasive posters in aid of Jumpers for Jak, a festive jumper day aimed at raising money for Jak’s Den to support those who spend the holidays in hospital. The pupils wrote letters last week to Jak’s Den and this week we have created posters that will go to raising awareness for the Jumpers for Jak day (20th of December, see Jak’s Den website/ P3 posters for more details).

We have been working our lungs very hard this week between the nativity and our St Andrews Assembly songs. The pupils have really been belting out the songs and I am positive both performances will be full of some powerful singing voices. For our St Andrews song we also have some great actors playing the roles of different characters on the hunt for Annie’s yoyo.

We have been researching different charities in the community in topic and have looked at 4 different famous people who each have a different need and the pupils have put together presentations to discuss how the different local organisations might help their person’s need. Some very good discussions and we have definitely got a very socially conscious group of P3’s!

Reminders:

With the new timetable and the run up to nativity and Christmas we apologise for the changing of days for PE and the confusion this may cause.

Next week P3S will have indoor PE on Wednesday and Outdoor PE Tuesday

P3W will have PE on Wednesdays and Thursdays

Please remember homework folders and reading books every day as these may be used in class time as well.

We look forward to seeing you at the Christmas Fair tonight 6pm-8pm,

Thanks for your continued support,

Miss Smith and Mr Woodward

Primary 5

Primary 5 are singing 500 miles by the Proclaimers at the St Andrew’s Day assembly. We have had very enthusiastic and loud practises so far! The children are looking forward to singing it to the school.  Ask your child to sing it to you.

Primary 5 will be singing at the beginning of the P1 and P2/3 Nativities. The children have been learning the words and they are sounding good already. We also have a solo performer, who has been working with Mr Shanks, and rehearsals have been going very well.

We have been working hard to make our products to sell at the Christmas Fair. The children set up their stalls today and put up their posters. The stalls are looking bright and colourful and the children are confident of making a profit. We hope you can come along and support them by buying lots of their creations.

In science the children are continuing to research their endangered animal. They have started to create their fact file with lots of pictures and information. Please feel free to send in any pictures or information you think the children may be able to use. The children will become experts in their chosen animal and in the last week of term present their fact file to the class and answer any questions from the other children.

Both classes made advent calendars this week ready for opening next week. The children are very excited especially when the chocolate treats were produced!

Primary 1

Primary 1 have had a busy week! We have been practising our nativity every day and it’s beginning to look great! Letters giving information about tickets went out earlier this week and the children can’t wait to show off all their hard work. Please continue to practise the songs and any lines your child might have at home. If you need to provide any clothes for costumes you will have received a letter home. Please let us know If you have any difficulty with sourcing anything.
In phonics we have been working on blending together the sounds we have learnt so far. The children are working really hard on hearing all the sounds in each word and blending these together. Thank you for all the support you have given with this at home.
In maths we are continuing our work on subtraction. The children are using their fingers, cubes and tens frames to take away from up to 10. They are beginning to recognise written sums and can write out sums in their jotters.
Tomorrow is our St Andrews Day Assembly. We have been busy learning the song ‘I sent aff for cheese’ and will sing it in front of the whole school tomorrow morning. In the evening it is the school Christmas Fair. The fair runs from 6pm until 8pm and is always a great event. If you haven’t yet got tickets, contact the office and they will be able to issue them.
Our PE times have recently changed. We are now getting PE on a Thursday morning with Mrs Fergusson our PE specialist. This will take the place of our Monday slot. Please send your child to school with a PE kit on a Thursday morning. For the next few weeks we are unlikely to be going outside for outdoor learning. We will be using this time instead for nativity rehearsals.
Thank you for your continued support
Primary 1 teachers.

P2 – Week Beginning 25.11.19

This week we have been busy practising our Nativity and are improving hugely each day. Those children who have speaking parts have now been issued with their lines highlighted on the script. This is so you can practise when to come in. Please take on the role of the other characters so your children can hear what is said before their cue. You will have also recieved a green letter home with an order form for tickets – tickets are allocated on a first come first served basis so please get them quickly to avoid disappointment. If you do not have a green letter please see your child’s class teacher as soon as possible.

We also had a visit from Neil, a mountain rescuer, who told us all about his role in the community. He told us about what he has to do in an emergency and showed us what he keeps inside his backpack. We also got to go inside a real emergency tent! We have loved learning about the roles that the different emergency services have in our community and have the RNLI in to visit on the 16th December.

A gentle reminder than gym with Mrs Ferguson begins on Wednesdays. The class get rewarded with a certificate if they all wear their gym kit – this consists of black, navy shorts and a white t-shirt.

Thanks for your support.

Primary 2 25.11.19

Nativity practice is well underway in Primary 2 and 3. We are all working very hard to learn lines, sing songs and remember our positions on stage. Could all children who have a speaking part please continue to practise their lines at home?

In numeracy we are practising our subtraction skills which will help us solve missing subtrahend questions. It all sounds very tricky but once we have mastered our counting back skills, I’m sure we will all succeed!

Reading books are issued on a Tuesday and reading activities are completed in class. Children are encouraged to read their book regularly throughout the week to help improve their reading and comprehension skills.

We are getting a visit from Mountain Rescue tomorrow which we are very excited about. Our visitor will show us the equipment that he needs to save lives and I am sure he will have some fascinating stories and pictures to share with the children.

We do not have P.E this week because our hall slot is being used to practise nativity. However Mrs Ferguson will be starting her P.E block with Primary 2 next Wednesday which we are very excited about!

School fair this Friday so we hope you can come along and enjoy some festive fun!

Primary 7 – 22.11.19

Michelle from West Lothian Drugs and Alcohol Services came to visit us on Monday. We learned about the effects of smoking on our health, finances and relationships. We were shocked to hear that cigarettes contain thousands of chemicals. During the week we researched some of these chemicals and where else they are found. We are looking forward to her next visit on Monday.

On Tuesday we visited the Risk Factory where we experienced a range of situations highlighting dangers and risks. We learned about to keep ourselves safe and who to contact if we needed help.

This week we have been working hard to learn our words and songs for both the St Andrews assembly and our class assembly. Our singing is absolutely fantastic! Please continue to learn these song words at home (especially Auld Lang Syne final verse!)

Primary 7 have been incredibly busy preparing for their stalls at the Christmas Fair. We have created a range of beautiful gifts and fun games to play. We have works out our costs and potential profit and look forward to finding out our total profit on the day! Please come along and support us on Friday 29th November!

Primary 3

It’s beginning to look a bit like Christmas in Primary 3. We have made a start to our nativity alongside P2 and for a first go through the pupils did well. They sang with enthusiasm and have begun to learn their lines and once we get really stuck into rehearsals I know it will be a show to remember. We have also began to make Christmas decorations and if the mountain of glitter is anything to go by there are sure to add a great deal of sparkle to the hall.

In our inclusion topic we have been learning about the eyes and ears and had some interesting discussions about how they work and what might happen if they didn’t work properly. We also had a first-hand experience of how the pupils work and they can now show you what happens in light and dark. We also included inclusion into our writing this week as we wrote first draft letters to Jak’s Den to try and find out a little bit more about what they do. Suffice to say we have had some great questions and some very well written letters.

In our maths we have continued our focus on money and division and the pupils have been getting to grips with dividing by 2 and 4. What has been great to see is that although pupils are finding it tricky they have been showing fantastic resilience and they have been putting in a good deal of effort to keep trying.

It was also great to see a good turnout for our Read, Write, Count session this week and hopefully the resources will be enjoyable to explore.

P3W pupils also completed their Weather Masks this week and had a parade around the school to show off their beautiful masks.

PE Update

I’m so delighted to announce I had 4 classes this week where all pupils remembered to bring their PE kit. Thanks for all your help with this and please keep it up. It’s so much easier, safer and more hygienic to be taking part in PE Kit.

And its that time of year again where pupils learn some Scottish Ceilidh dances so they can do them at their christmas party. They had great fun dancing the Gay Gordons, Military Two Step, Dadhing White Sergeant and the Flying Scotsman this week . Ask them to show you at home.

Mrs Ferguson

Primary 5

Primary 5 are going to sing 500 miles by the Proclaimers at the St Andrew’s Day assembly. We have had very enthusiastic practices so far! The children have done very well to learn all the words in a week. Ask your child to sing it to you.

Our Money, Money, Money topic is progressing well. On Wednesday and Thursday the P5 area was a hive of activity. Some of the resources used were glue, glitter, party bags, pipe cleaners and lots and lots of sweets! All groups have now finished making their products and are now deciding on the price to sell them for. The children are trying to make as much profit as they can so some of the prices are a bit eye-watering! We hope you will come and buy the goods the children have made at the Christmas Fair.

We have also been making Christmas decorations for the small and large hall. Lots of glitter was in evidence again!

If your child has not returned their slip indicating when they can help at the Fair please can they do so as soon as possible so we can make up our rota. Thank you for your help and support with this.

Primary 2 Update 18.11.19

Hello All,

This week we are continuing with our People Who Help Us topic with a focus on Mountain Rescue. We are very lucky to have a visit from a member of the Mountain Rescue Team and the children will be thinking up lots of questions they would like to ask.

Preparations for our P2/3 Nativity are in full swing and you will see the songs have been uploaded to the blog for everyone to practise. Your child may have lines to practise at home and we would be very grateful if you could support them with this.

New homework activities have been issued today. The children shared some super work with the class and some of the effort has been fantastic! Again, we have allocated some new activities on Education City for the children – well done to those who have managed to log on and try out some of these.

P.E days for this week and next- Indoor Tuesday, Outdoor Thursday. From week beginning 2/12 – Indoor PE will be Wednesday with our PE Specialist Mrs Ferguson.

Thank you for your continuing support,

Mrs Oliver, Miss Pringle and Miss Rafferty.

Primary 7 – 15.11.19

We think if Santa walked into our rooms at this moment in time he would want to employ us at the North Pole to boost the productivity of his elves. The motivation and commitment of our pupils to cost, manufacture and market their products and games has been fantastic. Primary 7 are buzzing! Please come along and support our pupils Enterprises at the Christmas Fair. We are sure you will pick up a few brilliant gift ideas for Christmas!

We have been discussing the true meaning of this time of year. To start off our conversation we asked the pupils if they had a magical power and could give a gift to every citizen of the world – what would that gift be?

Casey started the conversation with ‘a hot bath – everybody just needs clean water’. The gift ideas spiralled from there – food, shelter, love, education, peace and friendship. Wouldn’t it be lovely if our magical gifts were granted? We are preparing a small school assembly to share our gifts with the rest of the school.

In health we continued to look at the Eatwell plate to help us to analyse some food diaries. Using our knowledge we had to suggest a few healthier food swaps to ensure the person was getting a balanced diet. We are completing our own food diaries for the week and will be bringing them in on Monday to complete a task with them.

In PE we have been learning about Parkour which involves negotiating obstacles by running, jumping and climbing. We are really enjoying this and are developing our skills with increasing speed.

In maths we are focusing on coordinates in four quadrants. Through plotting points on the coordinate grids we realised the importance of reading the x and y axis very carefully! In numeracy we are continuing to focus on decimals and money. As part of our Enterprise project it is very important for us to be able to budget, work out our costs, profit and losses.

Primary 3

In Primary 3 this week we have been exploring the school. We went on an exploratory walk around the building to find out exactly what the school has in place to help those with additional needs. Plenty of things were found, such as buttons to open the doors, the lowered window at the office and even some Portuguese in P7! Mrs Wotherspoon was kind enough to come and answer questions about what the school does to help people and hopefully it gave the pupils a good insight into how to think about and practise inclusion in the real world.

We have been very musical this week as well, working hard to try and learn our songs for the nativity as well as fine tuning our rendition of ‘Wee Annie Had a Yo-yo’. The pupils have been in fine voice and they are singing better and more confidently with every practice.

In maths we have continued to focus on money and have been working on making change from different amounts. We have also continued to develop multiplication skills and are going to be moving on to division.

We had a visit on Tuesday from some of the environmental team from West Lothian Council. They taught us a lot about the importance of recycling, what we can and can’t recycle and which bin to put things in.
