Primary 5

It was lovely to meet you all at Parent Consultations this week. We thank you for your continued support to help us give the children a rewarding and stimulating learning experience.

We hope you were able to read the Recipes the children wrote about how to make a good friend. All were able to achieve the genre targets for writing instructions. They made a lovely job of re-drafting their writing and as a result produced excellent pieces of work. Hopefully some of these friendships become a reality.

We are hearing positive reports about how much the children (and parents!) are enjoying playing the games on Education City. The children can play any of the games on the site not just the ones in the homework/class section. If they find a game too hard they are able to play games in the level below to practice and reinforce their learning. Equally if they are finding games too easy the children can move up to the next level. We are definitely noticing a difference in the children’s recall of times tables facts so keep up the good work!

We continue to be impressed by the work the children are producing for their non-fiction book on The Scottish Wars of Independence. Each reading session we read the information together then the children summarise what they have learned in their own words. Many children are adding extra detail that they have researched in their own time. A great effort!

In PE P5G have started a block of Dance lessons and at the end they will perform their dance to a chosen audience. They will also choose costumes and props to complement their dance. We are seeing some interesting moves already! P5M will continue with their block of Futsal.

The children are on holiday Friday 14th, Monday 17th and Tuesday 18th February. Tuesday 18th is an in-service day for staff.

Reminders

Primary 4 13.2.20

Hello everyone

It has been a fun week in Primary 4. This week in maths we have been learning all about Roman numerals. We learned that Roman numerals are made of 7 different letters and how to use our numeracy skills to help to add different symbols together to make new numbers. Ask your child what they know 🙂

It was lovely to meet so many parents on Tuesday and Wednesday evening at parents consultation evenings. We look forward to welcoming parents back to into school on Tuesday 25th February at 2:50pm for our shared finish and on Thursday 27th February at 9:05am for our shared start. The focus of these sessions will be using the website Education City. Each session will be similar so you only need to attend one.

In French we have begun to learn about the items in our classroom. We drew our classrooms and labelled each object in French. Can your child tell the difference between un gomme and une trousse?

Please note that the children are on holiday tomorrow (Friday 14th) until next Wednesday 19th February. We will have PE as normal with Mrs Ferguson on Wednesday. We will also have an extra visit from NYCoS on Thursday for our singing lessons.

We hope you have a restful long weekend and we look forward to welcoming the children back on Wednesday.

Miss Clark & Mrs Muir

Primary 6 13.2.20

This week we have started a new Science topic on the Solar system.  We are looking forward to learning facts about each planet and how they orbit the sun.  We will be starting a display of our research.

In RME we have continued to learn about Islam and this week we learned about Eid.

Our show rehearsals are well underway, we have been learning the songs, dances and some of us have had the opportunity to begin practising our acting roles.

We had internet safety day this week where we discussed the importance of keeping our privacy settings private and also only having friends we know on social media.

In Maths we have been learning about simplifying fractions and also multiplying money.

In reading and writing we have been researching Sports Relief and wrote an explanation.

We are looking forward to our holiday weekend and returning to school on Wednesday.  Have a lovely weekend

Mrs Jamieson, Ms Mathieson and Mrs Smith

Primary 1 11.2.20

This has been another busy week in Primary 1. In phonics we are moving on from learning single sounds to blends. This week we have been learning the sound ‘sh’. The children enjoyed making sea shells and thinking of lots of words with ‘sh’ at the start and end. The common words we have been learning are ‘she’, ‘come’ and ”from’. Please try to write these at home and use them in short sentences.
In maths we are revising our knowledge of subtraction using a variety of resources to help us count. The children are really impressing us with their ability to take away from up to 20, well done!
Today is ‘Safer Internet Day’. We spoke to the children about the devices they have at home and who they should tell if something goes wrong or doesn’t seem right. Please continue these discussions at home and read through the leaflet in your child’s homework folder.
Tomorrow we will be going to the nursery garden for outdoor learning. The garden may be wet and muddy so please make sure that your child has appropriate shoes and clothes that can get a little muddy. We will do our best to avoid children getting too muddy and wet.
A reminder that this weekend is our February break. The children are off school on Friday, Monday and Tuesday and return to school on Wednesday 19th February. We hope you all have a fantastic break!
Thanks for your continued support.

Primary 3 7.2.20

We are part way there with our life size knights, they are taking slightly longer than we thought! We will update with pictures once they are completed and guarding our classrooms.

We tested our Bows as well and had great fun practising our battle faces!

Pom poms were used instead of arrows for safety, and we tested the distances travelled using a variety of forces from a light force to the strongest force we could manage.

Here we are using the metre sticks to measure the distance travelled.

We also had a visitor this week from Lynne at EOS (Eczema Outreach Support) who came to raise our awareness of the condition and what it meant for sufferers. She assured us eczema cannot be caught, and allowed us to use a moisture monitor to understand the water content of our skin. She explained that people with eczema have  less water in their skin and therefore have very dry, sore skin.

It was very interesting and the whole visit was interactive. We enjoyed learning about it.

We also ended our germ experiment with the slices of bread this week. It took 4 weeks to get to this stage but very clearly shows that it is important to wash our hands. Bag one shows a piece of bread untouched by hands, and the slice of bread in bag 2 was passed around the whole class to touch. We were disgusted with the results and are aware of what this means for us, and the importance of washing our hands before we eat:

Primary 2 – 03.02.20

This week we have been revising our addition facts for 2, 5 and 10. We are gaining confidence in skip counting to work out the answer and have been using some songs to help us remember the order.

Within social studies we have begun to look at navigation in line with our Pirates theme. We have linked this with technologies and have been programming Beebot to go forward, backward, left and right to different points.

Our sound this week was o_e and we have been revising the different sound ‘o’ makes when we add the ‘magic e’ at the end of a word.

Within science we looked at the moon and developed our knowledge of why it appears to change shape. Every child has been issued with a moon diary and we encourage you to fill this out as often as you can to deepen this understanding.

We look forward to welcoming you to our parent/carer consultations next week. Please see the office if you do not have an appointment.

This week Miss Rafferty’s class have also welcomed Mrs Baxter, a PGDE student from Glasgow University. Mrs Baxter looks forward to taking some lessons and getting the know the children better.

Have a lovely weekend.

Primary 4 6.2.20

Hello everyone

Primary 4 have had a busy but fun week! In Science we have been learning about water. Our focus this week was the oceans and plastic pollution. The children worked individually, in pairs or in groups to design their own plastic collection inventions that could be used underwater to collect plastic. We had so many amazing ideas! The children then worked together to build their inventions and make them into reality using lego. They look fantastic, well done boys and girls.

In Numeracy we have been continuing to learn about fractions. This week our focus has turned to equivalent fractions. We learned that equivalent means equal or the same and the children have been using pictures and materials to explore fractions that are written differently but are the same size. Next week we will begin to explore written ways to work out equivalent fractions.

We are continuing to enjoy NYCoS (National Youth Choir of Scotland) lessons each Monday morning. The children have been learning concepts such as rhythm, beat, pitch and even learning how to read some musical notes! Ask your child what they have been learning at home 🙂

In Health we have been learning about how to stay safe while online. We learned about the story of Chicken Clickin’ who made lots of mistakes when using the Internet. The children were confident when identifying her mistakes and making suggestions for what she could have done differently. We will continue to learn more about how to be a good digital citizen next week.

Reminders –
Parents consultations take place next Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th February. Please contact the office to book an appointment if you haven’t done so already. We look forward to speaking to many of you then.

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our shared start/finish. Even though we experienced technical difficulties in the morning everyone seemed to enjoy playing the games when we were eventually able to access the Education City website. We hope you now have a better understanding of how games can help the children to learn. We would encourage you to keep playing these games with your child at home.

In writing the children created a recipe for a good friend/friendship. It was interesting to read all the different qualities the children thought were important. The recipes have been written and displayed on the wall. You will be able to read these when you are in school for Parent Consultations next week.

The children are continuing to research relevant information for their fact file on the Scottish Wars of Independence. We have been very impressed with the detail some children have included in their writing. They have also drawn and labelled pictures to highlight key information.

On Thursday 13th February PSA are holding a Valentines dress down day. Children can come wearing pink/red or dress to impress. Cost is 50p if they wish to take part.

Primary 1 News

This week the children had the opportunity to do a class talk on their favourite dinosaur. Many children brought in excellent posters and powerpoints to show to the class! Well done to everyone in Primary 1 for having the courage to stand up in front of an audience. We were all very impressed at how hard you worked on these at home!

week in phonics we have been revising some of the sounds we have learned. The children consolidated their learning of h, w, j, v and revisited y,z,q,x. They took part in sound sorts and were encouraged to blend words with these letters in them. Some children have started non-fiction reading books in class and all children are focusing hard on their comprehension strategies. (prediction, cloze reading and responding to questions).

In maths this week the children have been using their own strategies to help them solve addition problems. They were using number lines and doing bunny hops forwards to help them with adding. They have also moved on to subtraction this week and have been using cube towers to assist them with this.

In other areas of the curriculum, the children have been continuing to work hard on their fitness and co-ordination in P.E. Thank you to all of the parent helpers that have assisted with this. We focused on the concept that ‘Nobody is Perfect’ through our Bounceback programme in health and wellbeing. We also used listening skills to take part in a whole class drama about Mary Anning, one of the greatest fossil hunters that ever lived! It has been an exciting week in Primary 1!

Friendly Reminders

P.E. days are on a Wednesday and Thursday. Please make sure that your child has a labelled P.E. kit on these days. Primary 1 do outdoor learning on a Wednesday afternoon so we ask that you send your child to school with some wellies.

Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to seeing you all at parents evening next week! Have a great weekend everyone!

In Primary 3 this week we have been getting into the spirit of Chinese New Year that began last Saturday. We spent a part of Monday afternoon creating decorative Chinese lanterns that were decorated and then taken home Tuesday. This also formed the basis of our writing for this week in which the pupils were tasked with writing up how to make the lanterns as part of our instructional writing topic, so hopefully now they have made them and have created their instructions they can teach everyone at home how to make them too!

We have also been looking at the Knight’s Code of Chivalry, asking ourselves what character traits were important for being a knight. Pupils linked how we live our lives today to how the knights lived and there were some interesting similarities. The pupils created some very unique dramas to show off their chosen part of the code and more than one had quite barbaric endings, no mercy was shown!

We have also wrapped up our germ topic with the discovery that bread can go incredibly mouldy when touched by a whole class and left for a while, needless to say the bread was disgusting and showed perfectly the importance of hygiene, especially around food!

A huge well done to the four members of P3 who recited their poems in front of the school on Monday, they were absolutely amazing and showed such confidence to perform in front of such a big audience, well done Taylor, Frazer, Poppy and Grace!

Apologies for the confusion around the shared starts and finishes, to clarify:

Another busy week in P5. The children have been working hard on different areas of the curriculum.

The children are building with excitement about going to Lockerbie Manor.  Hopefully you received your letter about Lockerbie Manor and the list of items the children need to take. If you are unable to bring any of these items please contact us at school and we will see if we can help. We hope to see you at the meeting on Thursday 6th February where you will be able to find out more information and ask questions. Children are not to attend this meeting.

In writing the children are continuing to learn how to write instruction. P5G wrote about how to play a game and P5M wrote about how to make a sandwich. Some of the instructions given were very interesting!

The children worked on a challenge this week about Life in the 13th century. Each group had to research information about Life in the country, life in a castle or life in a burgh. They worked hard and have created a poster showing key facts and pictures to illustrate what they have learned. You will be able to have a look at the posters during Parents evening.

In numeracy all children are using their times tables’ knowledge to complete multiplying or dividing tasks. Some children need to practice their times tables so they can recall facts quickly and accurately. We are encouraging them to use Education City for this. Next week we will be showing this website to you during our shared start/finish sessions on Wednesday 5th February. We hope you will be able to join us at one of the sessions to practice your recall of the times tables!

Primary 1 had an exciting afternoon yesterday. We made dragon masks to celebrate Chinese New Year! We learned about the story of how the years were named after animals and then we watched a dragon dance. We coloured in our masks using bright colours and cut them out. It was so much fun!

In maths we are continuing with adding small amounts in our head. The children are being encouraged to discuss what strategies they are using. This helps them to practise and share ideas. They have been using their fingers, cubes, 10s frames, rekenreks and number lines.

In phonics we are learning q and x this week. These are the last two sounds of the alphabet that we need to learn. The children are doing really well with practising their sounds and letter formations.

Please continue to read regularly with your children at home and complete the homework. One of the homework tasks this week is to prepare a 1-2 minute talk on a dinosaur of their choosing. Each child will present their talk to their class next week (Monday or Tuesday). They can make a poster or bring in photos to go along with it. We can’t wait to hear each other’s talks!

Just a quick reminder that PE is on Thursdays and outdoor learning is on Wednesdays.

Hope you all have a great week!

Primary 2 have been creating fantastic Pirate portraits after they were called upon by a visiting pirate. The children used pastels to draw their pirate portraits and discussed the features of a pirate (Beards, hats, hooks, gold hoop earring etc). These are going to be displayed on our wall ready for parents night!

Primary 2R have their parent assembly on Monday 10th February. Our assembly is all about Love and Kindness. The children have been given lines to learn and two songs to practise. (Cant help falling in love – Elvis Presley & Try a little kindness song- Tori Kelly and Sesame St)

In Numeracy the children have been learning about Arrays. We have been using arrays to help learn our 2, 5 and 10 times tables. The children have shown a good understanding of using this concept so we encourage you to use the array method at home. The children should be able to explain this to you- all they need is a pencil and paper.

Please continue reading regularly with your children and signing the homework sheets. The children have been working hard in reading sessions: sounding out tricky words, using expression and showing an understanding of punctuation.

We look forward to seeing you all on Parents night in the next couple of weeks. If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch.

Primary 3 24.1.20

This has been a busy week for us yet again topic wise. We have learned how to become a knight in the Medieval Times and learned that the process started at age seven! Our ages! We couldn’t believe how many chores and responsibilities they had at our age in order to prove themselves before becoming a squire, then eventually a knight.

We began making our own life-size pictures of knights and look forward to finishing them off to provide guards for our castle and classrooms.

In Science, we were introduced to the term ‘forces’ and were investigating types of forces, whether it be push, pull, twist or bend. We will investigate the forces involved with magnets next week.

We had our poetry competitions and MR Woodward and myself were blown away by the calibre of recitals this year for P3. The confidence shone from the children and every last child made an attempt to learn their poem. Thank you for helping your child learn these as it is an important part of the Scottish Curriculum. We have our annual poetry competition today as well so it is exciting times!

Child Smile were in this week checking our teeth and explaining to us the effects of sugar on our teeth in every day foods we may eat.

Miss Smith was shocked to learn that one packet of Drumstick Squishes had the equivalent of 33 sugar cubes in them! She’s put off for life!

Hello to everyone.

We have been busy practicing our song for the Scots afternoon. The children have been enthusiastically singing 500 miles. We think they sing it better than the Proclaimers!

All children recited their Scottish poem to the class. We were very impressed with the standard. It was obvious that many children had practiced at home and put a lot of effort in to it. Thank you for any help you were able to give your child with this. The winners from P5M were Erin and Rory. The winners from P5G were Tegan and Cayden. The winners will now say their poem in front of the whole school. Well done to everyone who put themselves forward.

The children seem to be enjoying out topic The Scottish Wars of Independence. They are currently working on a challenge to make a poster to explain what life was like in the 13th century. There is lots of researching, drawing and writing going on.

The children going to Lockerbie Manor should have brought home letters this week giving you information about what to pack. There will be a meeting on Thursday 6th February to give you more information about this residential.

Primary 1 22.1.20

This has been another busy week in Primary 1. We have been continuing our learning about dinosaurs. Yesterday another letter arrived from Professor Rex asking us to investigate the job of a paleontologist. Lots of the children would like to be a paleontologist when they are older so it was a great opportunity to talk about the skills they need to develop in school now to help prepare. In order to practise being gentle around delicate fossils the children picked chocolate chips out of cookies. It was great fun and the children especially loved eating the cookie when they were finished! Tomorrow we will be researching the diplodocus and writing a factfile on it. If you have time at home tonight why don’t you look up the diplodocus online and see what facts you can find?

In maths we have returned to a focus on addition. We are moving away from a reliance on cubes to count amounts and are encouraging the children to add small amounts in their head. We are continuing to revise numbers to 20 at the same time and any help you can give at home is much appreciated.
In phonics we are learning y and z this week. We only have 2 more sounds (q and x) left to learn and the children are very excited to know all the letters in the alphabet. We are continuing to work on blending these sounds together to make 3 and 4 letter words. The children are making great progress in this!
Today each child will be reciting the poem ‘Roguey Poguey’ in front of the class. We will then chose 2 winners to represent the class in front of the whole school in Friday’s Burn’s Day Assembly. Good luck to all the children.
A few reminders:
PE is on a Thursday. Please send your child to school prepared for this with a named PE kit. PE is in the morning so it is helpful if your child comes to school with their PE clothes under their school uniform.
Outdoor Learning is on a Wednesday afternoon. We will try to get out every week and in all weathers so please send your child with suitable footwear and clothes.
Many of the children are asking for water throughout the day. Please send your child to school with a named water bottle each day. The children are allowed to take a drink at story time and during the day when they are not with the teacher.
Thank you for all your support

Primary 2 Update 21.1.20

Hello All,

Last week was a busy week with Primary 2 really getting into our Pirate topic! We have been learning about compass points and using grid references to describe/ find places on a map. We had great fun creating our own maps with a partner.

We were so excited yesterday to receive a letter in a bottle from Captain Barnacle – Captain of The Rising Sun Pirate Ship! His crew has been struck down by the dreaded pirate lurgae and he’s asked P2 to become his crew. We are going to learn about all the jobs pirates need to do on a pirate ship and we’ll be learning some of the words pirates use.

In Literacy this week, we are continuing with our spelling patterns and focusing on how commas are used in reading and writing. Well done to everyone on  learning and reciting their Scottish Poem – some great actions and expression! The chosen people will recite them in front of the rest of the school at the Burns Assembly on Friday.

In Maths we have started to work on arrays (rows and columns of dots) of 2 and 5 which help children to visualise times table facts. We will also be starting work on telling the time this week.

A few reminders:

-Please remember PE Days are Wednesday (indoor) and Thursday (Outdoor – weather permitting)

-Please could you ensure all your child’s belongings are named.

-P2R will begin practising for their class assembly soon – please can you help your child learn and practise saying their words.

Thank you for your continuing support,

P2 Teachers
