World Book Day @ Carmondean PS

Yesterday was World Book Day at Carmondean, organised by our Primary 3 classes. We had ‘Drop It and Read’ sessions throughout the day, a ‘Where’s Wally’ competition and a visit from the Morrison’s Supermarket Community Champion, who brought a very special gift for our school. Morrison’s donated 15 fabulous books for our class libraries. This varied selection will definitely add to our reading pleasure in all of our classes. A big ‘Thank-you’ to Morrisons for their continued support of our school and their kindness and generosity on World Book Day.

Primary 5

Another busy week in P5. The children have been working hard on different areas of the curriculum.

In writing the children wrote about their adventures last week at Lockerbie Manor and in school. They had great fun telling each other what had happened and how they felt about things. Each child was able to produce a recount of their experiences. It all sounded very exciting!

Our topic on the Scottish Wars of Independence is progressing well. We are learning about all the battles that took place and the different tactics used to help each side win. There has been great interest in the variety of weapons used and how they work. Next week we are off to Bannockburn to learn even more about all these things. Please ensure your child has a packed lunch and is dressed for the weather as we will be outside for some of the time.

The children had great fun yesterday celebrating World Book Day. It was good to see the variety of books the children brought in and they had great fun sharing these with their peers. Miss Morris also enjoyed sharing a bit of her favourite book to p5M which was quite funny! The ‘Where’s Wally’ competition caused great excitement and the children were on the lookout all day for him. Well done to everyone who found the 5 hiding places. We are now waiting to see who will be picked as the winner.

In PE the children in both classes will be learning to play hockey which will be outside. This is in preparation for the Hockey Festival on 24th March. Next week will be p5M’s last Futsal session and both classes will be going out in most weathers after that so please ensure that the children bring outdoor PE kit on a Monday and a Tuesday.

Reminders

P5G P5M PE- Monday and Tuesday

Spelling homework- due every Friday.

Numeracy homework- if given due every Thursday. Please practise all times tables over and above any other homework. Children can use Education City to play games.

Have a great weekend.

Mrs Gilmour, Miss Morris, Mr Shanks and Mrs Muir

Carmondean Football Team

A huge congratulations to the football team for their performances yesterday at the 2nd schools football league event at Deans High School. The team played fantastically well and they worked so hard across the pitch in every game, running themselves ragged. The link up play between everyone was great and they were all calm and very comfortable on the ball, with some quality link up play all over the pitch, including several through balls from our play-making keeper Aiden! Everyone got a chance to play a few games and it is a testament to the team spirit that whoever came in slotted in seamlessly and we didn’t lose our momentum. We came away with 4 wins and a draw with goals from all over the pitch and solid defending to keep 4 clean sheets. A big thank you to Angela Coulter for organising and well done to everyone who took part!

Primary 7 05.03.20

Today is world book day and we have all brought in our favourite books and when a bell sounds at different times of the day we all stop what we are doing and read our books .In literacy circles we have all finished are books and we have started writing book reviews. We have really enjoyed reading our books and some of us are now reading a different one!

In topic this week we have written a diary to recall what we as WWII characters would have been doing during the war to help out.

We enjoyed exploring Education City. We played lots of different games and a really fun game wear you pick a snail and race against people in school and in class. To win you need to get the most points by answering maths questions as quickly as possible. It is so much fun!

Our show is still coming along brilliantly and for the first time we had the stage up and we used Props! Yes, you heard correctly, props have been added during rehearsal! It is an amazing show and it is on the 2nd of  April – we hope you are coming!

In numeracy Mrs Macaulay’s group started learning about negative numbers – we were looking at reading scales and answering lots of tricky word problems! We learned about overdrafts and we learn more about money as we continue. Mrs Wylie’s numeracy class have been converting between top heavy and mixed fractions.

Your blog today was written by Kira & Ruiri

Reminders:

Primary 1 4.3.20

Primary 1 are in the middle of another busy week. This week we are learning the sound ‘ch’. We have thought of lots of words containing the sound blend and are making progress writing these with accuracy. In maths we are learning about position and movement. The children have enjoyed programming movement paths using beebot robots and watching them move. We have also been working on the positional language of up, down, forwards, backwards, left, right and between. The children enjoyed following instructions wearing blindfolds and listening for instructions in drawing exercises.

Our dinosaurs topic is coming to an end next week. This week we learnt about volcanoes and the impact of an eruption on the dinosaurs. We really enjoyed making our own volcano with baking soda, vinegar and soap and watching it erupt in the playground. Next week we are taking a trip to the National museum in Edinburgh. We are going to take part in a few seminars and will go to the T-Rex exhibition. Here is a link to the website for you to look through with your child: https://www.nms.ac.uk/exhibitions-events/exhibitions/national-museum-of-scotland/tyrannosaurs/

Next week we also have planned an open afternoon for parents and carers to come into school to see what the children have been learning about dinosaurs. The classrooms will be open from 2.45-3.15 and the children will have a few examples of work they have done to show. We will be making invitations for this event on Friday so look out for them for more information.

Tomorrow is World Book Day. Each child is to bring in a book from home to read in class. Try to pick a book your child knows well so that they can talk about it to their peers.

A reminder that tomorrow afternoon and Friday morning are our shared start and finish. These sessions are opportunities for you to come to our classrooms to see an online resource we use in class- education city. Each session will be exactly the same so it is only suggested that you come once. Tomorrow you are invited to come between 2.50 and 3.20 and on Friday between 9 and 9.30.

A reminder PE is on a Thursday so please come prepared with a named PE kit.

Outdoor learning is on Wednesday afternoons. Thank you to everyone who comes prepared with wellies and warm coats. The children love this session!

Thank you for all your continued support

Primary 2 Update w/b 2/3

Last week in Primary 2 the children had great fun making and trying Hard Tack biscuits which were eaten by pirates! They used their experience to write their own set of instructions with a focus on making sure the steps were in order and using time words e.g. first, next, then and finally.

In RME, the children learned about Shrove Tuesday last week and tried some pancakes – much nicer than the Hard Tack biscuits!

This week the children have been conducting their own research about desert plants and animals using the internet to take notes. They will use these notes to create a report about desert plants and animals.

P2OP have been busy practising their class assembly. We hope to see as many of you as possible on Monday 9 March at 9.10am. Please continue practising saying words loudly and clearly at home.

Please remember World Book Day on Thursday 6th March – children are encouraged to bring their favourite book in from home and they will have the opportunity throughout the day to enjoy some quiet reading time.

Thank you for your continuing support,

Primary 2 Teachers

News from Lendrick Muir!

Hi everyone,

We are having a great time at Lendrick Muir.  We’ve done lots of activities already but still have lots of energy left for our evening activity. We have been in four activity groups and each group has done two activities today and will do another two tomorrow.

The activities are:

  • Gorge walk
  • Leap of faith (climbing up a high pole and jumping off into the air)
  • Bushcraft (making fires!)
  • Nightline (a blindfold walk)

We’ve answered Miss Clark and the rest of P4’s questions in their blog post which will give you more information about what we have enjoyed and what Lendrick Muir is like.

Here are some photos from our day for you to enjoy!

Primary 4 3.3.20

Hello everyone!

This week is very exciting in Primary 4 as some of us have gone to Lendrick Muir to stay overnight on our residential. We are writing because we are still in school. We would like to hear how the boys and girls are getting on at Lendrick Muir. We also want to tell them what we’re doing and ask them some questions.

We started the day by making props for our Primary 4 assembly. We all got a chance to create and decorate one prop. You will see these props on Tuesday 17th March during our assembly. We hope you can come 🙂 We then had a check in to find out more about each other since we are a mixture of pupils from both classes.

We spent the rest of our day working on designing and creating characters for our stop motion animations. We watched a famous stop motion animation (Wallace and Gromit – The Wrong Trousers) to see how stop motion animation is made. We created a super hero, a super villain and 2 other characters as well as backdrops and storyboards to plan our stop motion animations. We will make these tomorrow by taking photos on the iPads of our characters and backdrops. We can’t wait to see how they turn out! Miss Clark is very impressed with how hard the boys and girls have been working. Excellent team work! 🙂

Now we have some questions for the boys and girls at Lendrick Muir…

What’s the best thing about Lendrick Muir? – Lauren

What are the rooms like that you’ll be sleeping in? – Harry

What is Lendrick Muir like? Can you see the sea? – Frazer

How are you all? – Alana

What activities have you done today? – Ayden

What’s the best activity been so far? – Mya

Are you having lots of fun? – Sophie

What have you been eating for lunch and dinner? Is it tasty? – Amy

Thank you for answering our questions P4, Mrs Muir, Miss Millar and Mrs Drummond. We are looking forward to seeing you all on Thursday.

Miss Clark & Primary 4

Primary 1 News

It’s been another exciting week in Primary 1! We worked together to make pancakes on Tuesday and created our own pancake instructions to make them at home. In phonics we learned the sound ‘th’ and identified words with this sound at the beginning and end. Our common words were ‘this’, ‘that’ and ‘then’ and we practised writing these words into a sentence.

In maths this week, we have been consolidating our understanding of addition and subtraction by using different strategies. We learned how to use a number line, 10 frames, rekenreks and cubes to solve problems.

We explored different dinosaur extinction theories and wrote about what we think happened to the dinosaurs. We also replied to a letter from Professor Rex and discussed what we have learned so far about dinosaurs. The children have really loved this topic!

In other areas, we learned French commands through a fun interactive dance. We learned all about the things that are safe/ unsafe to put inside our bodies and we were given the opportunity to explore our senses in the nursery garden. In P.E. the children have started a new gymnastics topic and continue to learn about co-ordination through ball skills.

Friendly Reminders

Primary 1 have P.E. on a Wednesday and Thursday so please make sure your child has a labelled P.E. kit with them on these days. As the children go down to the Nursery Garden on a Wednesday afternoon, it is advised that they bring a pair of welly boots with them on this day.

We are so excited for our class trip to the Museum! Please make sure the yellow form is returned to ensure your child can attend.

Thank you for your continued support,

Primary 1 teachers

Primary 3

In Primary 3 this week we started off our Tuesday on a delicious note as it was pancake day! The pupils got a chance to try out some homemade pancakes and a huge thank you must go to Mrs McMillan for her fantastic pancake skills.

We have reached chapter 2 of our story books now with P3 showing some very nice description to set the scene and describe what’s going on in their towers before the ominous knock on the door. They worked hard to add great description and have produced some very good stories so far! In keeping with this theme we have also painted their dragon eyes that will eventually go on the cover of their books. They look very vibrant and colourful and it is clear to see the care and enjoyment that the pupils have put into creating them!

In topic we continued our exploration of punishments and prison life in the medieval ages with an exploration of some of the more creative punishments from the time. Pupils were given pictures and had to try and figure out what each of their pictures were used for. These ranged from stocks, to a dungeon to the much more gruesome thumb screws. During the discussions of what the items could be there were some very creative ideas of how to use each of the pieces of equipment!

Our class trip to Stirling Castle is on Tuesday so please ensure all children arrive at school promptly and if anyone is yet to do so the trip letters must be handed in before your child is allowed to go on the trip.

World Book Day is Thursday the 5th March, pupils are encouraged to bring in their favourite book on this day and there will be some in school activities through the course of the day.

  4. What has the food been like? – Everyone has enjoyed the food with many using the word ‘amazing’.
  5. What do you think has been the best activity? – The most popular answer was the obstacle course because it was really fun getting muddy! Some also said abseiling was the best.
  6. Did you get soaking wet and mucky? – Another definite yes especially on the obstacle course!

Other comments from the children:

Please remember that any medicines that the children require should be handed into the school office with the appropriate form as soon as possible. We are sure that the children will have the best time! The children staying with Miss Clark will also be having lots of fun. We will be creating our very own stop motion animations on the iPads as well as creating props for our assembly and spending time outdoors for an extra long PE session with Mrs Ferguson. It is sure to be an exciting week!

Preparations for our Primary 4 assembly are well underway. If your child has a speaking role then their lines are in their homework jotters. Please support your child in learning their lines at home. Each child has a role in our assembly and we will be practising lots in class over the next couple of weeks. Parents and families are invited into school to watch our assembly on Tuesday 17th March at 9am. You will receive a letter home about this in due course.

Primary 7

We stepped back in time to the 1940’s this week, when Homefront Histories came to visit. We had a jammed packed day, completing various missions including putting out incendiary bombs!

Following our discussions on the Holocaust last week, we learned about the Righteous among the Nations. We all agreed that when bad things happen, good always shines through. We were certainly inspired by the kindness, courage and braver of people like Miep Gies , Oskar Schindler and Irena Sandler.

Primary 5

Hello,

In primary 5 this week some of us went to Lockerbie Manor and some stayed in school.

if you want to read about the Lockerbie Manor adventures please click on the Residential News tab above.

The children who stayed in school have been doing exciting activities as well. On Wednesday we looked at Coats of Arms and how they are created. The children are now designing their own Coat of Arms and putting on things that are specific to them. We will be continuing with this activity today where we will be painting them.

Mr Shanks brought the virtual reality equipment along and the children got to experience a range of adventures – we went underwater and saw the Great Barrier Reef, we visited the Mackie ice-cream factory, we travelled to Edinburgh castle, we zoomed up into space and we visited ancient Egypt. Tyler said-“It was really fun to see all the different places.”

In art with Ms Fox the children made monsters. Oliver said “It was very, very fun and cool”

Today the children are going to create Scottish and English soldiers to guard the P5 classroom. When the other children return hopefully they will not be frightened!

They will also have PE with Mrs Ferguson where they will be getting all the equipment out and have a fun obstacle course.

We would like to ask the Lockerbie Manor people some questions-

Are you all having fun?- Ammar

Did anyone scream when you were rock climbing?- Lina

Did everyone sleep ok?- Katie

What do you think has been the best activity? – Elle

What has the food been like? – Tyler

Did you get soaking wet and mucky?- Aaron

We are looking forward to you answering our questions. We will check in again tomorrow.

Hope you have fun

Primary 7 21.02.20

Hello and welcome to this week’s Primary 7 blog! Although it has been a short week we have certainly managed to fit a lot in!

We have been learning about a very sensitive subject in topic – The Holocaust. In 1933 Hitler became leader of Germany and blamed Jewish people for losing the First World War and decided to punish them (as well as some other people) in the most unimaginable way. We watched some videos on Newsround which explained what life was like for these people. We know how important it is to research this topic with an adult. We feel it is so important for everyone to know about the awful things that happened so that it never happens again.

In numeracy we are all continuing to work on fractions, decimals and percentages. We have been converting between them, ordering them, and working out fractions and percentages of amounts.

We have all been enjoying our five minute challenge at the start of numeracy sessions – our Ninja booklets. In this time we have to answer a range of maths and numeracy questions which cover all areas of the curriculum and beyond!

In writing we have been focused on explanation writing. This week we wrote clear explanations about how a volcano erupts. This took us back to our natural disasters topic in our first term of primary 7 – it seems so long ago!

Coming to Carmondean Primary School very soon… our Primary 6&7 show – What’s the Crime Mr Wolf? Props are being created left, right and centre by our art team. Dances are coming along step by step. Songs are being sung passionately. The whole production is coming together amazingly.

Please continue to learn your lines and song words.

Your blog was written today by Dean, Kira, Aiden, Ruiri, Eva, Lana, Michael, Sara’a, Erin and Reuben.

Reminders:

Monday – Outdoor PE

Tuesday – Visitor to P7

Wednesday – Dance group at lunchtime

Thursday – Literacy Circles, Handball tournament

Friday – Spelling homework, topic homework .

Other – Continue to work on your lines for the show!

Thank you for your continued support,

Mrs Macaulay, Mrs Wylie & Mrs Muir

Primary 3 Blog

This week we have had a particularly barbaric week in Primary 3 during topic time. We looked at medieval crime and punishments and it was up to the classes to decide what suitable punishments might be for a range of different crimes. Needless to say the pupils were ruthless in their judgements and they made some of the medieval punishments look relatively tame!

We have been developing our knowledge of time and we have looked at quarter past, as well as looking more at o’clock and half past. So far the pupils have been whizzing through time and have been going through the topic with confidence!

In Health, P3S have looked at medicines to begin a new health topic. The class had a great discussion about different medicines, different types of medicines and what are good and bad medicines. The pupils handled the discussion very maturely and showed a good deal of knowledge as well as asking a lot of insightful questions. P3W finished off their science topic about forces by looking at the effects of magnets of different objects. They thought like scientists to hypothesise and then tested their theories, writing down their results and coming up with some important conclusions about how magnets work to demonstrate push and pull.

We have our P3 trip to Stirling Castle coming soon and the forms have now gone out so can we ask that pupils bring their forms back as quickly as possible?

Primary 1

Hello everyone!

Primary 1 are back and ready to learn after their February break. This week in maths we are consolidating our learning on addition and subtraction. We are looking at mixed sums, both addition and subtraction together. This means we need to be extra careful when we are looking at the signs so that we know what operation to do.

In reading we have looked at the common words, ‘with’, ‘us’ and ‘so’. We discussed the spelling of these words and used them in sentences. This week for comprehension we drew a picture and wrote a sentence for what we think will happen next in our book. Can your child tell you what they predict will happen after their book is finished?

We are almost at the end of our dinosaur topic which the teachers and children have loved! We have learned lots about dinosaurs. We have our last dinosaur to write about in our fact file tomorrow and we are excited to see what dinosaur it will be!

Primary 1 enjoyed learning more French last week for Modern Languages Week. We looked at colours and commands.

It was lovely to meet so many parents on Tuesday and Wednesday evening at the parent consultations. Thanks for your continued support.
