Primary 4 10.5.19

Hello everyone

We hope you had a lovely long weekend. We enjoyed welcoming the children back to school on Wednesday and hearing their weekend news.

This week we welcomed some exciting additions to our classroom. Five caterpillars have been delivered and we will be watching them grow and develop over the coming days and weeks. They are in a small container just now with food at the bottom. When each caterpillar turns into a chrysalis they will be moved into a much bigger container, ready to turn into butterflies :). Once their transformation is complete we will then release them into the wild. The children are very excited to watch as the caterpillars are already much bigger now than they even were on Wednesday. We will continue to add pictures to the blog as they transform.

Show rehearsals are now in full swing. Please continue to practice any words your child has to learn with them at home. The show performances are on Thursday 13th June at 1:30pm and 6:30pm. More details will be provided about tickets for this event soon.

Your child should have received a P4 newsletter home with them which gives further details about what your child will be learning this term. Today your child will receive a new homework sheet and reading book home too. The children have until next Friday to complete one spelling activity related to week 1 words, read the set pages in their book and complete 1 other activity of their choice. Please see the sheet and class newsletter for further details.

Thank you for your continued support. Have a lovely weekend.

Primary 7 3.5.19

We can’t quite believe we have reached May already, in true Primary 7 style our last term looks like it will be as busy as all the others!

Primary 7 have decided that they would like to leave a legacy for the rest of the school in the form of a campaign involving environmental messages that they hope will be adopted by all. They have also thought of a physical legacy and are currently working on plans to achieve this …watch this space!

For this term we have changed our language homework, moving the focus away from predominantly spelling to boosting our vocabulary. Within our classrooms we have Word Boost Walls, please ask your child for an explanation of how we use these walls. Each Monday, your child will choose FIVE words. They will research the meaning of each word and write a sentence for each word. Various stimuli will be provided throughout the school week but the pupils may choose their words independently. Jotters must be handed in on a Friday at the latest. If a pupil does not finish their sentences in class they should complete them as homework.

We are studying data handling in maths, if you use spreadsheets or any other forms of data handling at home or in work please discuss what you use it for with your child. We are currently compiling, displaying and analysing information.

Your child was given a letter regarding our Living and Growing topic this term. We aim to start using this resource next week, please contact the school ASAP if you would like to discuss any aspect of this area of the curriculum.

The prom committee met for the first time this week. They will be helping to organise the decorations, picking what food will be served and deciding on any other activities they may want at the prom. Their first job is to ask the rest of P7 for any ideas and thoughts. The excitement is building!

The residential trip to France is coming up fast! The children are being given reminders in school to help them organise their belongings. Remember if your child needs medication please collect the appropriate form from the school office. Bonjour!

Primary 1 Update 1.5.19

Hello All,

We have had an exciting week in Primary 1 with 2 letters from our friendly dragon. He asked us to write about his favourite fairytale – Goldilocks and the Three Bears on Monday and today he sent us a special package – full of sweeties! We had to work out which fairytale the dragon wanted us to read – it was Hansel and Gretel! We made our own sweetie houses – do you like them?

This week in Maths, we have been continuing to work on telling the time – o’clock and half past on digital and analogue. If you would like to practise more at home, here is a game you might like to play:

https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/116/telling-the-time

In RME, we have been learning about how different religions welcome a new baby – this week we looked at Baptism.

In French, we have been learning colours and using our knowledge to sing ‘ A Rainbow’.

Primary 4 2.5.19

Hello everyone

It has been a very exciting week in Primary 4. If you look in the “Residential news” section of this blog then you will see several updates about the visit to Auchengillan that some primary 4 children attended on Monday and Tuesday. A great time was had by all and there were a few sleepy faces in school yesterday morning – and that was just the teachers!

The children who did not go to Auchengillan had a fun time back in school learning more about caterpillars and butterflies before our real caterpillars arrive in class in a few weeks time! They also had the opportunity to explore the International Space Station and the solar system through using Google Expeditions on the iPads. Some children also created fabulous mini beasts out of clay. Sounds like a fabulous couple of days!

This week we have begun working on the 7 times table in class. The children have picked this up quickly and they are using concrete materials, number lines and known multiplication facts to help them develop their understandings of this tricky times table!

Today in class we had the opportunity to design and create our very own mini beasts using our knowledge of common insects characteristics and defenses. The children designed their insects in their topic jotters before using different shapes, sizes and colours of paper to create a collage of their mini beast in the style of the artist Matisse. These are looking fabulous so far and we look forward to putting the finished products up on the wall for all to see!

A quick reminder that there will be no school next Monday 6th and Tuesday 7th May due to the May bank holiday. All children will resume on Wednesday 8th May.

Thank you for all support. Have a lovely long weekend.

Miss Clark and Miss Donaldson

Primary 3 28.4.19

Welcome back everyone! We hope you all had a relaxing Easter break!

This week we have started our new topic which we have decided to call ‘Ocean Commotion’. The children have been impressing us so far with some of their knowledge, but we still have so much more we are eager to learn. The children have suggested lines of enquiry for this topic and have outlined activities they wish to do as well, so the topic is truly made from their ideas and questions.

To kick start the topic, we have learned about a turtle called ‘Peanut’, and how his life was changed because of ocean pollution and the carelessness of humans. He has grown up in captivity, therefore we have been finding out more about his natural habitat and who he would have shared the sea with. So far, we have learned of the zones of the sea and the creatures we could find within. We will be creating a vision of this in our classrooms in a display which we are very excited about!

This week is also Lowport. It is Miss Smith’s first time going too and so we are all very excited! We have put together a little talent show by the pupils for our disco night too which we are looking forward to. We are a very talented lot!

Please remember, if you have not already ordered a packed lunch for Thursday and need one, to hand in the yellow form or speak to someone in the office. Also, if the EE2 information form has not been completed and returned, could this be done at your earliest convenience? In addition to this, medication should be handed into the office prior to the trip.

We will take lots of photos to share our experience with you when we return.

Homework will commence as normal this week.

Miss Smith, Mrs Smith and Ms Matheson.

Primary 6

Welcome back after the Easter holidays! Primary 6 have hit the ground running this week and have been very enthusiastic about our topic for this term. We will be focussing on inclusion through the use of Superheroes. Pupils have been hard at work creating their own superheroes and they have some very imaginative powers and names! We will be looking at heroes in a range of different ways, what makes a hero, how do heroes help people, everyday heroes and many more.

We have been revising our recount writing from last term as the pupils wrote nice detailed accounts of their Easter holidays and it was lovely to hear so many great stories from the last 2 weeks of everyone having fun, making the most of the fabulous weather and really making the most of their break.

We also want to commend the pupils for how maturely they began our health and relationships topic. They handled the subject very well, getting very involved in mature discussions and were able to talk openly and sensibly, well done P6!

We will also be starting ICT next week and so any pupils who have permission to bring their own devices are encouraged to bring them in on Mondays if they would like to use them.

Reminders:

Indoor PE – Usually Wednesday however this week Thursday

Outdoor PE – Thursdays (this week Wednesday)

Spelling – Fridays

Maths – Class dependent

Primary 4 25.4.19

Hello everyone
It was lovely to welcome the children back to school on Tuesday and hear all of their holiday news. We hope you all had a fun and relaxing Easter break.

This week we have begun work on our new topic of Mini beasts. The children are very enthusiastic about this topic so far and have lots of ideas about how to make this topic very exciting! We started by working with a partner on writing down what we already know about mini beasts, what we want to learn and how we want to learn. Then we worked with a partner to research a particular mini beast in detail. The children wrote notes under the following 4 sub headings: habitat, defences, diet and characteristics. The children used fact files, the internet search engine kiddle.co and non-fiction books to research their mini beast. Next week we will begin writing a report about our mini beasts using the notes we have taken.

Next Monday some of the children will be heading on their adventure to Auchengillan. The children are all very excited! Please remember to hand in any medication your child will need during the overnight stay to the school before the end of the week if necessary. Arrival times on Tuesday will be communicated by GroupCall so please make sure the school has your up-to-date contact information. Thank you.

The children who will remain at school will have an exciting couple of days exploring our topic in more detail, completing art activities, going outside for PE and working on the school show. We look forward to being back together again on Wednesday to share all of our news.

In maths this week we have been learning the 9 times table. We have been using a song to help us learn all the stations of the 9 x table. Here is the link if the children would like to listen to it at home: 9 x table song The children in P4C have even created a dance to go with the song! Please ask your child to show you it 🙂

Thank you for your support. Have a lovely weekend when it comes.

Easter Rapping

Primary 5 have been involved in Interdisciplinary Learning this week, combining Literacy, Religious & Moral Education, Music and Technologies to produce some Easter and Spring Raps. The children wrote the words, created the backing tracks using GarageBand and performed them for recording. Here are the results. We hope you like them:

Let the Games Begin

Yesterday, we had two fabulous performances of ‘Let the Games Begin’ by our Primary 6 & 7 pupils. If you were lucky enough to be part of the audience you couldn’t help but be impressed with the confidence, talent and enthusiasm of our children – they were fab!  If you weren’t that lucky, here are some scenes from the show to give you a flavour of what you missed:

Primary 4 3.4.19

Hello everyone

Primary 4 are having a lovely last week of term so far. We have been learning about the Easter story this week in RME. We have been learning about which countries traditionally celebrate Easter and why. We have also been learning how every country has different Easter traditions. Today we are making Easter crafts and practising our cutting, sticking and colouring skills. We also used paper fasteners to bring our craft to life 🙂 In class we have been learning Easter songs to sing at the church on Friday morning.

In maths we have been consolidating our learning of different multiplication and division strategies that we have learned this term. The children designed posters that showed their knowledge of multiplication and division facts, shared strategies that help them to solve problems and created their own word problems! P4D shared their posters with the class and Mr Shanks made a surprise visit to P4C to see all their hard work. Well done to both classes!

Last week we had the pleasure of watching the dress rehearsal of the P6/7 show. It was spectacular and we all loved it – especially the amazing dance moves! We wish P6/7 good luck as they perform this show to their families tomorrow.

We have begun to learn the songs and now the dances for the P4/5 show “Rock Bottom”. The dances are very energetic and we look forward to getting to know them better. Some children have been given lines to learn over the Easter Holidays. Other children will be told more about their parts after the holidays.

This will be our last blog post before the Easter Holidays. We look forward to welcoming the children back on Tuesday 23rd April and hope you all have a restful and enjoyable Easter break!

Thank you for all your support.

Primary 3 2.4.19

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all  parents for your support this term. You have gone above and beyond in making our big homework castles, sourcing sticks for bows and arrows and coming along to watch and enjoy our assembly and banquet. Also coming in to see the children with their amazing strategies in our Number Talks lessons. The children have thoroughly enjoyed this term and it was lovely to see so many of you come to allow us to display our learning to a captive audience.

We wish you a fantastic Easter break when the time comes – very well earned for the children too.

Next term will see the pupils choice of learning turned into a topic for them, so watch this space. The ideas are pointing in a very specific direction of oceans, sea creatures, plastics, the future and extinction.

We will leave you with some pictures from this term. Happy Easter when the time comes.

Primary 6 29.3.19

This week has been a particularly busy week in Primary 6. We have been doing lots of show practice and the parts are sounding and looking fantastic. We had our dress rehearsal yesterday and the children absolutely knocked it out the park! Everyone looked incredible in their costumes and the props were looking amazing, a big thank you to Mrs Harding for putting all of them together! The singing was top class and this year promises to be an unbelievable year for the show with the enthusiasm and effort that has gone into rehearsals!

We have said goodbye to Mrs Dudgeon as her last day was Thursday. It was an emotional day and she will very much be missed by everyone. She has been with the Primary 6s throughout their time in school and the pupils are very fond of her – we all appreciate all the support and hard work she has given over the years.
