P5/6 CLASS ASSEMBLY ON WW1

Today was the big day for all of us in P5/6, time to share our learning with friends, family and the whole school. There were a few nerves building as the day progressed and much relief when it was all finished – also some pleasure in being able to reduce some parents and staff members to a tear at the end!

Isabel, Jay and Alex sharing details of how WW1 started.

Emma, Carla and Tory sharing details of women in WW1

Robbie, Ronan and Robert shared information about life in the trenches.

Kelsi, Mia and Evie talked about some key Shetlanders from WW1

Amy, Koll and Frankie spoke about the battle of the Somme, where Shetland suffered the biggest loss.

Hayden, Isaiah and Lucien shared some details of the weapons used in WW1.

Becca, Hannah and Daniel shared their thoughts on the end of the war and our learning.

Ellie, Evie, Hannah, Isabel and Robbie all shared information about their own connections to WW1. This was a lovely addition to the assembly and all of the pupils had found this information in their own time!

Quiz time (Abi, Ellie and Kayla): time to check if the audience had been paying enough attention to the assembly… Well done audience!

Getting ready to sing “Keep the Home Fires Burning” – we are blessed with such beautiful singers in P5/6

Soloists: Emma, Evie, Hannah, Tory, Kelsi, Abi, Becca and Carla.

Quartets: Robbie, Lucien, Hayden and Koll and Ellie, Kayla, Jay and Frankie.

I can honestly say that I could not have been more proud of all of the P5/6 pupils. They have put so much thought and effort into this. They have been very instrumental in deciding how we should do it, what should be included, all slides and scripts were prepared by themselves too.

We have thoroughly enjoyed the topic of WW1, both the pupils and myself, and I believe that was clear in the presentation of their assembly this afternoon.

Well done P5/6, you should all be super proud of yourselves – have a well deserved break over the weekend!

Achievement Talks 30.11.18

Today it was the turn of those on Nerdy Nuggets (consisting of Alex, Becca, Carla, Evie, Hannah and Lucien) to share their achievements with the rest of the class.

Today Carla shared with us some work that she had been doing at home based on our WW1 topic. Using the learning that we have been doing in class Carla created a diary of a woman during the period of WW1. It contained information of life at home, stories she had heard from the trenches and the impact of the loss of family members too. Well done Carla!

The diary of a woman during WW1.

Hannah told us all about her Grade 2 piano exam she sat earlier in the week. Some of the tasks she had to achieve were – play 3 pieces of music, accurately read and play a new piece and demonstrate her ability to follow a beat. We look forward to hearing how successful she was in the coming weeks. Good luck Hannah!

Lucien and Alex talked us through their WW1 PowerPoint presentation they have been completing in class. We have been concentrating on a specific area of WW1 each week and the pupils have been updating this information onto a PowerPoint presentation. There is some really interesting information being shared here boys, well done!

WW1 power point before we leave school.

Well done Nerdy Nuggets. Again, there have been some great achievements shared this week. I am also enjoying hearing all of the information that the pupils have been finding out about their personal connections to WW1.

Keep  up the good work P5/6!

Let’s Circus

Spinning plates- see the concentration on their faces!

Last Thursday morning Primary 5 and Primary 6 had an action packed session learning some of the skills used by circus performers.

We all had a fabulous time and the fun began as soon as we arrived! Within the first few minutes we were spinning toothbrushes round our fingers!

Then when Cunningsburgh pupils joined us we were split into three groups which then rotated round the three circus workshops.

There were opportunities to practise acrobatics, hula hoop skills and spinning plates!

We were having that much fun that the time simply flew by.

Here is a snapshot of how we got on……some of us better than others……but we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

The people who instructed us were great fun and very talented

Ruby and Katie throwing and catching each other’s spinning plate!

We tried out a variety of tricks with the spinning plates.

Having fun with  hula hoops-spinning them round our waist, foot, arm and even neck!

At the acrobatics workshop we tried some tricky manoeuvres and had to place a lot of trust in our partners.

Everyone agreed it was super fun and we were all proud of our achievements in such a short time. Some of us were lucky enough to be going to see the The Let’s Circus performances.

First Aid Training

On Wednesday 26th April Jennifer Thomson from the Fire Service came in to teach us how  to carry out CPR if someone had stopped breathing.

We watched a DVD which showed us all the steps in what to do if we found someone lying in the ground injured or ill.

We then practised CPR on mannequins which was really quite difficult to get right. We learned how to approach a casualty, ensuring we did not place ourself in danger. We discussed the importance of calling for help to deal with the casualty or to contact the emergency services.

Towards the end of the session we were shown how to place someone in the recovery position and then practised it on each other.

By the end of the afternoon we all felt more confident that we could help save a life using CPR.

Final STEM Challenges

Challenge No 1

We all had a fantastic time creating our own robots which could move-but they were not allowed to have wheels!

Challenge No2

Robot Wars comes to Shetland!

This time we had to design a robot which could move using wheels.

Using the knowledge we had gained from the first challenge, we quickly designed and made moving robots which used wheels.

We then went on to race our robots.

Body Works- Glasgow Science Centre

In the forenoon P4-7 found out all about ‘Disgusting Digestion’!

It was really interesting…….but..  yes…quite disgusting at times!

Poor Frankie and Lily Jane were given the difficult task of trying to eat two dry crackers in one minute! They did not succeed.

Even Ms Scanlan got involved!

Christie helped to demonstrate just how long our  intestines are?

In the afternoon we had a super time going around different ‘stations’ where we got to try out lots of different fun activities relating to the human body.

It was a super session and we all learnt a lot about how

our bodies work.

SSPCA Visit

Louise Sales from the SSPCA visited our class today to tell us about the important work carried out by the SSPCA in helping badly treated and injured animals.

We watched a video about how to treat animals correctly and what to do if we find an injured animal or suspect someone is mistreating an animal.

We answered a quiz about looking after animals. Then we had to put ourselves in the role of an SSPCA officer and had to decide what action we would take to rescue an animal and what equipment we would have to use.

We played a ‘Snakes and Ladders’ style board game but it also involved answering questions about animals and their welfare.

Emily:I liked when we got the questions in the quiz and board game.

AJ:I enjoyed it and I’m happy I won the game.”

Holly:I enjoyed it- the game was fun and fair.

Lily-Jane:I liked the game, the video clip and the quiz.

Visit to Tesco

We were amazed just how big the store was when we went through to the back. There were huge storage areas full of all sorts of different foods. We saw the chilled area where fruit and vegetables are kept before going out into the store.image

We were given special vests to put on before we went onto the shop floor to let customers know what we were doing there.

We felt like detectives trying to find different fruit and vegetables from different parts of the world including the U.K.

Whilst it was interesting to discover all the different places around the world where our food comes from, we were also keeping a lookout for any Fairtrade products we could see in the store.

image

Zara and Emmy found Fairtrade bananas.

We also foundimage Fairtrade cocoa, drinking chocolate, coffee and tea. Fairtrade cocoa and drinking chocolate image image

Shane quickly spotted the Fairtrade chocolate!

We got to smell and taste different foods and spices.

We were also given a bag full of interesting information, puzzles and colouring sheets about food, as well as a bottle of water and a piece of fruit.

Here we are with Trina who showed us around.

Bertie said, “It was good tasting different food.”

Michael commented, “It was a really good day. I loved being in the Tesco store.”
