As well as menus, posts and pages there are many other useful features you can add to your school website on Glow Blogs. This is just a short list of some of them. The links will take you to extra help.
Twitter Widget add a twitter feed to your blogs sidebar with Jetpack. Twitter have disable this feature.
Facebook Like Display a Facebook Like Box to connect visitors to your Facebook Page (Jetpack).
Sharing via Jetpack, you can add buttons to share posts via many services using the JetPack Sharing module.
Links, you can add links to the site and display them in a widget.
Image Widgets, images in your sidebar, that can be links (Jetpack).
Contact Forms you can add contact and other forms to your posts and pages with this Jetpack feature.
Features Image, for example here is a site that uses sticky posts with featured images to provide a grid on the home page and one that shows them on a slider.
Display Posts Shortcode
The Display Posts Shortcode plugin can automatically list posts and pages organised in a variety of ways. An example can be seen on the How To page here where links to child pages are automatically displayed.
This can be useful for example to list all a departments sub-pages on one page for automatically creating navigation.
Syndication
Syndication, you can bring content into your School Website from other blogs in a couple of ways. This might be useful if you have class or department blogs set up:
- Use the RSS widget, this can bring a list of posts from another blog onto a widget area on your blog. This does not need to be all of the content, you could bring in content from a particular category on the other blog or a list of posts with a certain tag. For example if your Physics department has its own blog you could add a widget to your school website that would bring in a list of posts from that blog with the tag department news. Optionally you can control which pages the widget appears on using the Widget Visibility jetpack feature (e.g. on the Sciences page on the site).
- The Syndication plugin can bring in posts from other blogs and mix them in with your posts. For example, you could bring in posts tagged department news from the English department’s blog and mix them in with the School news page. You would do this by syndicating the RSS feed for that tag and adding the ‘School News’ category with the syndication plugin settings.
Hi,
One of your example websites (https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/glowblogs/anytownps/) has a google map in the side bar.
How do you do this and is it theme specific?
Also, is it possible to add google calendar? When I add the iframe code to a page or the text widget the code is deleted.
Mamy thanks
The Example uses the Jetpack Contact Info widget. There is a description of how to use it: https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/glowblogs/jetpack/?p=35
You can add Google maps to posts too.
We do not allow iFrames on Glow Blogs so you cannot add Google Calendars. We do hope to add a calendar facility to Glow Blogs at some time in the future but there is currently no timeframe for this.Update July 2016 There is a Google Calendar Plugin in Glow Blogs now.Hi is it possible to add an outlook calendar into a glow blogsite? And how do you do that?
Hi Simon,
I am afraid not. We have looked into it but could not see how to manage it. You can use google calendars and the Events Organiser Plugin has a calendar feature too.
