Well Hello Pinettes! How are you all?

Well again – what about this weather???

This is LGBT+ Awareness Month and if you have driven or walked past the school you will have seen the LGBT+ Flag proudly displayed.

So this week’s blog is all about our differences and our similiarites

Literacy, Nature, Art and Craft.

Below is a suggestion for a couple of books, some we have read before, but they all have a silimar theme that we are all different in some ways, the same in others but we are all unique.

The Flamingo that didn’t want to be Pink

What about making yourself a Flamingo – the only rule is it cannot just be PINK!! Maryland Zoo has a Caribbean Flamingo called ‘Bumper’ you can learn all about him, find out what he eats and how tall he is, and even watch him and his friends on the live web cam. Maryland Zoo

Next the Rainbow Fish, in this link it is read by Ernest Borgnine (he has been in a lot of Movies!) The Rainbow Fish

What about making a colourful sparkly fish, I will send you all some instructions. What about going onto the internet and seeing if you can find any real rainbow fish.

Last year in class we read Tango makes 3 we really enjoyed this story, so thought you would like to hear it again. This is a lovely story all about two boy penguins called Roy and Silo, then baby Tango comes along. You can look up loads of information on penguins.

One last story The World made a Rainbow

In the first Lockdown we all made Rainbows for our windows, think about making another one like the little girl in this story. What about a sensory Rainbow with different materials for each colour? ArtBar has some really great ideas!

What about a colour hunt?

How many Red things can you find in the kitchen?
How many Yellow things can you find in the fridge?
How many Pink things can you find in the bathroom?

How many Orange things can you find on your walk?
How many Blue things can you find in your cupboard?

Which colour did you find the least of and which the most?

Now don’t forget it is Valentines Day on Sunday, so what about making a card for someone special – cards are always nicer when they are hand made.

And Friday is Chinese New Year – Year of Ox! Red Ted Art has loads of crafty ideas for you to try, you could make a dragon or an Ox.

Hope all is well with you and your families. Find below some activities to do so if you wish. Friday 12th February is the Chinese New Year. 2021 will be the year of the ox. The ‘Chinese Zodiac Story’, sometimes called ‘The Great Race’, tells the story of how the Chinese calendar follows a 12 year cycle, each year named after a different animal.

Dragon Dance

One of the colourful activities to watch is the dragon dance.

Create Your Own Dragon

Make your own handprint Chinese New Year dragon. You will need:- paper, pen, glue stick, sellotape, two sticks and scissors.

Red is a lucky colour in China. How many red things can you find in your living room.? How many can you find in your kitchen?

Noodle Handling.

Handle a tray of cooked noodles with your fingers. Try to lift noodles using chopsticks. If this is too difficult, use kitchen tongs. Try cutting noodles with scissors.

Paper Lanterns

Make paper lanterns to hang in your house. You can decorate them any way you like. Maybe use stickers or glitter.

Hello, hope everyone is doing well! We are all really missing you and hope that it is not long now until we are all back together again. Here are some activities for you to try at home and enjoy.

Numeracy – Number Pairs

You Will Need: A4 paper, scissors and a pen

Fold a piece of A4 paper or card three times to give you eight equal rectangles.
Cut out the rectangles.
Write pairs of numbers on the rectangles. Can choose higher numbers if you wish.
Mix the rectangles up and turn them over to face down, so you can’t see the numbers.
Take turns to turn over two of the rectangles. If you get two that match, you get to keep them.
Play until all the numbers are gone.
(Make more rectangles to add to the game for a challenge for next time if suitable).

Literacy – Chinese New Year Story

On Friday, it will Chinese New Year. Click on the link to hear the story all about it. We have previously read the story of The Great Race in class. Each year a different animal is celebrated. Can you find the year you were born? What animal is associated with your birth year? This year it is the year of the Ox.

Health and Wellbeing – Dressing Games

Lay out three items of clothing for two people, eg socks, trousers and sweatshirt.
Ask child to stand in front of items of clothing.
Who can dress the quickest?
On your marks, get set, race!

Hello! Hope you are all well and have been enjoying some fun in the snow over the weekend!

Our new literacy booklets will be ready for collection by the end of the week, if you are looking for some new activities to try at home. Please phone the school before collecting, so we can have them ready for your arrival.

This week is Scottish week and we have some Scottish activities for you to try and enjoy.

Literacy – Have a listen to this Scottish song performed by Singing Hands. Can you copy and learn some of these signs?

Numeracy – Simple maths addition. Have a go at counting and join in at home.

Art – Try some of these fun art activities using everyday items you may have at home.

Health and Wellbeing – Here are some Scottish cookery recipes and videos – try to make some delicious treats. Which one was your favourite?

Just For Fun – if you still have any snow (or it might snow again this week), gather some up and make a mini snowman. Use paints to make him look colourful.

Literacy

Learn about Scotland and living on an island by watching Katie Morag on iPlayer – what episode did you watch? Did you enjoy it?

Have a look at this clip where Katie Morag is playing pooh sticks. Have you played pooh sticks before? Did you like it? When you are on a walk you could have a go and play pooh sticks too. Video – Katie Morag – pooh sticks

Now have some fun doing the Shooglie Wooglie. This a clip from Scottish Book Trust doing the Scottish version of the Hokey Cokey. Have fun and hopefully you learn some Scottish words for different body parts.

Numeracy

Our theme this term is Scottish castles can you use kitchen roll tubes to create castles. Places a different number on each castle you make. Then you can play a game, placing the correct number of straws or pencils inside the numbered castle – you could even add flags to the top of each straw/pencil. Have fun. You could also get help from someone in your family to draw a castle with a number on it and place the correct number of toys on top on the castle drawing. You could also create a number line. Draw a castle with battlements then use a toy character to count to 10 and back again moving him along the battlements.

Health and Wellbeing

Put on your own mini Highland games in your house.

Toss the caber – use a cardboard tube for this.

Hammer throw – use a cushion and see who can throw it the furthest.

Catch the Haggis – use a bean bag or a sponge or even an orange. How many times can you catch it before it drops?

Art

Have a look online at different tartan designs. Then have a go of making your own tartan. This can be made drawing lines with pencils, pens or crayons. You could even get messy and use paint. Or you could cut or tear paper into strips creating you own design by sticking them to a piece of paper.

Scottish Counting. How many?

Hide small plastic toys in a tray of lentils or oatmeal. Count how many toys you can find. Match your number word with the written number.

Scottish Food

Help someone at home prepare some Scottish foods to eat. It might be porridge, shortbread, pancakes, haggis, a scotch pie, oatcakes and cheese or heating up a tin of lentil soup! Enjoy a taste and try. The smells are good too.! Before you eat your Scottish fare you could maybe recite the Selkirk Grace. This is the prayer normally said before you eat your meal at a Burn’s Supper which is a celebration of the poet Robert Burn’s life and work.

But we hae meat, and we can eat,

And sae let the Lord be thankit.

Tartan Car Track Painting

Design a new tartan for Burns night. Use toy cars dipped in paint to roll on the coloured lines.

Hello Comets,

It has been lovely to see some of you on our VScene calls and we look forward to seeing you again. Our VScene sessions are on a Tuesday at 10.30am, Thursday at 10.00am and Friday at 10.00am.

Our story this week is called ‘’The Lion Inside’’ by Rachel Bright and Jim Field. I will read this to you on our call on Thursday. In the meantime, you can listen to the book and practise the signs.

We created loads of Christmas craft to send home, one of which was this paper plate Christmas tree decoration. I’m sure they looked great at home.

We all worked hard rehearsing for our part in the school virtual Christmas Show. We sang and signed to 5 Brown Reindeer. We hope you all enjoyed the show.
