Climate Change Conference

All school in East Ayrshire took part in a Climate Change Conference.  The Transition and Oak class had their own Climate Change Conference.

We had lots of successful learners and effective contributors throughout the full day.  We meet virtually to discuss our day and enjoyed sharing a video on climate change.  We had an action and got stuck straight into bringing our action plan to life.

Work will continue over the next few weeks and preparations are under way for our whole school assembly on how Willowbank are going to do their bit to help towards climate change.

We looked at energy, waste and the natural environment.  The oak class were responsible for making new bright attractive posters for each classroom within the school.  These are to remind everyone about turning off all electrical devices when not in use.

Our classes enjoy walking outings, so we are proposing that on each class walking outing, we take part in a ‘clean up my community’ by litter picking whilst out our walks.

Willowbank will be making use of old materials and turning them into a festive decoration surprise, that can used again each year.

Effective Contributors – SQA Healthy Eating

As part of the Healthy Eating unit, the Transition class were all Effective Contributors when they worked together to discover where common fruits and vegetables grow. The class had to chose different fruits or vegetable and match them to trees, bushes, vines or under the ground. The class completed the task and their own sheets. Well done!

ECO/SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT – G.G.2 ZERO HUNGER

*Responsible Citizens* *Effective Contributors*

As part of our school Eco targets this year, we learned that people around the world suffer from hunger and we are lucky to have access to food in our school. We looked at how we can make small changes so that we are not wasting food. We used some old bananas that were almost binned to make Banana Muffins!

IDL – Health and Wellbeing

Our theme is Oliver’s vegetables. We have been learning about the different vegetables and some of the children are able to identify what each vegetable is using their words or symbols.  We explored the vegetables, put them in basin, washed them and then carefully with physical support from staff were able to cut some of the vegetables. We enjoyed smelling, feeling and on occasion tasting some of them.

The children were able to confidently hold the knife with support from the staff to cut up the vegetables from the story.  We then used the cut up vegetables to make some artwork in the afternoon. We printed using them. We looked at the different patterns and textures it created on the page. It was great fun.

IDL MNU Evidence

Successful Learners/Effective Contributors/Confident Individuals

The Asteroids have been busy investigating the weights of different vegetables and comparing their weights and sizes. We tried to estimate which vegetable would be the heaviest then we checked our predictions using the balancing scales.
We worked hard to order some vegetables in order of heaviest to lightest, lightest to heaviest.
