Primary 2/3 21.2.18

Primary 2/3 had a fantastic trip to the North Lanarkshire Heritage Centre. The children took part in a Roman workshop. The children looked at maps, photographs and were able to handle some Roman artefacts. The children got to dress up in Togas, touch and hold a Roman soldier’s armour and helmet. The children were also given the chance to hold some Roman weapons and a huge Roman shield. We learned lots about the Roman Bath House and Hadrians Wall.  To finish our trip off, the children got to design their very own Roman shield and they took a walk up the viewing tower which allowed them to see for miles. It was rather windy up there!

Last week was also very exciting because we learned about Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and Lent. We enjoyed eating our pancakes and deciding something that they thought they could possibly give up for Lent. Some of us think that this will be a huge challenge!

In maths Primary 3 are continuing to learn their times tables (2, 5 and 10) and Primary 2 are learning how to double numbers using rekenreks.

In Science we are still working our way through the Polar Explorer programme. This week we are investigation how animals stay warm in the freezing temperatures and next week we are going to “pack our bags” for a polar explorer experience. What will we need to take to keep us warm?

Next Thursday (1st March) in Health we are looking at how we grow up and bounce back. Could all children bring in a toy or comforter from when they were younger please? We are going to be using them in our discussion.

P.E is still on a Monday and Wednesday

Homework- Reading, Spelling/Time your climb, maths worksheet

Thanks, Miss Rafferty

P5 update 29.09.17

This week in Miss Farren’s maths set they have been learning to create maps using the 8 compass points. They were using Probots to demonstrate their understandings of maps and compass points.   Miss Jamison’s maths set were learning about place value up to 100 000 and coordinates.

In P.E on Tuesday we have hand ball and on Thursday we have badminton with Miss Ferguson. We enjoy the lessons for lots of reasons!

Miss Jamison’s class in writing were creating newspaper reports about invasion and the Battle of Hastings.

In Miss Farren’s class for reading they were focusing on adverbs and verbs which are techniques used by the authors to make exciting writing. In Miss Jamison’s class for reading they were doing invasion about King William.

The big homework for all of P5 is making landmarks from Great Britain. The work is due on Friday 13th of October

Both classes were focusing on “ee” sounds in spelling. The children recorded dictations to help them understand how to write the “ee” words.

Both classes were doing a display challenge in groups about Great Britain. Each group was given a country from Great Britain to describe in groups of 4.

Primary 5. 15/09/17

Happy Friday Primary 5,

Throughout this week we have concentrated on ‘ae’ sounds in spelling. We looked at the 5 sounds and practiced using the words in various contexts. At home children should reinforce their learning through read, say, cover, write, check and then by selecting 1 activity from the ‘Pick ‘n’ Mix Homework’ sheet.  Pupils return this homework on Fridays.

It was numeracy week in Maths. We therefore explored big numbers, place value, dot patterns, mental strategies and data handling. The work is challenging learning and encourages pupils to be successful learners who are beginning to confidently explain their understanding.

Our Great Britain topic has centered on Geographical features. We have a very good understanding of Atlases and how to use them correctly. We identified major cities, landmass, airports and rivers then marked them on our own maps. Our next steps is major landmarks. We are also learning to work collaboratively with others.

Reminder: Thursday is indoor P.E day. We have been very pleased that mostly all the children are remembering to bring appropriate kit and footwear. Well done.

Finally, we hope you have an enjoyable long weekend and maybe the weather will be kind to us. Pupils resume on Wednesday 20th September.

Thank you,

Miss. Farren and Mrs. Jamieson

Primary 2/3 13.09.17

Primary 2/3 have been looking at different types of puppets, such as string, finger, hand and shadow. We have been learning about how they are made and how they are controlled. Primary 2/3 worked in pairs to make stick puppets and practised performing with them. They had lots of fun!

It is numeracy week this week so we have been very active in maths, working in pairs, solving problems and sharing strategies. Primary 2/3 have enjoyed working with different partners every day and discussing how they have solved the problems.

New reading books were given out on Tuesday and they should be read regularly over the next week. Primary 2 and Primary 3 all have common words to practise at home.

In phonics, Primary 3 are focusing on the sound “ph” and Primary 2 are revising “wh” “ee” and “oo”. We have been working with partners spelling words with these sounds, completing activity sheets and trying to write sentences with words that contain the sound. Primary 2/3 have been working very hard!

P.E is on a Monday and Tuesday. Could all children bring a P.E kit and water bottle.

Half of our trip will be spent in a workshop however the other half will be outside in the castle rooms and grounds. All children need to bring a packed lunch with them unless they have ordered one from the school. Everyone is looking forward to finishing up our topic with the visit to Edinburgh Castle.

Last week was very busy for Primary 1! Throughout the week the children’s work was put into their learner’s journey to show their learning so far in the year. The children made a great effort in all their work and should be very proud of themselves. You will be able to see this jotter at the upcoming parent’s evening.
In Science Primary 1 have been focusing on their senses. They are aware that they have 5 senses and have enjoyed learning about the sense of smell and touch in class. We will continue looking at the remaining senses this week.

During this week we will also be issuing word boxes with common words along with a list of suggested activities to practise at home. Children have been taking home a school library book on a Monday to read at home with an adult. Please make sure that this book is returned on a Friday, there is no need to bring it every day.

Primary 3 were writing instructions for playground games last week. We played three games and decided which one we wanted to write our instructions for. The children were able to write them in the correct order and use a variety of different openers. After all the instructions were written we put them do the test. They all worked out brilliantly!

Primary 3 were very active in maths this week, working around stations, playing board games, on the smartboard and used the ipads. We even managed some mental maths using our number fans. We were very impressed with their addition and subtraction skills.

We finished our work on the Active section of the SHANARRI wheel. We put our bodies to the test by raising our heart rates and describing/drawing what happens to our bodies when we exercise. All the children did very well identifying the changes.

Welcome back!
It was fantastic meeting all the new Primary 3 boys and girls last week! Everyone looked very smart in their uniforms and were very excited to come back to school.
We have been very busy getting to know each other, getting used to our new classroom and seats. Primary 3 have been working hard, showing us quality lines and fantastic manners.
Primary 3 have been focusing on what it means to be active by taking part in active activities, describing what happens to our bodies when we are active and how it can help us develop into healthy adults. We walked down to the local forest to explore, challenged ourselves on the trim track and practised our fine motor skills in class.
This week we are going to continue with activities and lessons about being active which will help us with our wonderful wall display in the hall.
We are looking forward to meeting everyone at Meet the Teacher on Tuesday! We will also be handing out our newsletter with some information about what will be happening in Primary 3 this term.

29.04.16 Primary 7 update

This week Primary 7 have been busy preparing work that we will showcase at our Leavers Assembly. Children have been working together to write a song and have also wrote letters to their favourite members of staff.

It was our last session of P.E with Deans Community High School this week. I think it is safe to say that this was a very positive experience for all pupils.

30 children took part in the first drumming workshop of this term and will continue working with Miss Farren each week to ensure we can play the new composed piece of music for 5 minutes in sync… (No pressure at all!) They will each receive a copy of the music patterns and can practice these in their own time. Click on the links below to see our progress so far!

Thank you to all the children who returned their My Life So Far project. Many have been completed to an exceptional standard. Both Miss Clark and I enjoyed reading them and they even brought a wee tear to our eyes. Can those who have not handed in their project please do so next week. Thank you.

Have a lovely long weekend!!

Miss Farren and Miss Clark

Primary 3 are learning about Chinese New Year this week. We are planning to learn about the year of the Monkey, Chinese Story behind Chinese New Year and create Lanterns which we will write a set of instructions for.

We are coming to the end of our Multiplication topic in Maths but we would encourage you to still practise the x2, x3, x4, x5 and x10 times tables with your children because this will support their understanding in our new topic which will be Division.

Last week the children were set the challenge to construct a working Drawbridge from junk. The children worked very well in pairs and clearly thought hard in trying to make the drawbridge rise up and down. We have made a display of some models, self assessment and photographs. You can see this on parents night.

We look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday or Thursday.

Can we remind children that it is a dress down day on Friday, theme is Valentines!
