Primary 3 5.10.18

Primary three have been scientists this week, experimenting with the water cycle and observing evaporation and condensation happening before their very eyes. We have been learning about making experiments fair.

We even pretended we were a water droplet going through the first two stages of the water cycle this week in Writing. The imagination and words used to describe the process were very good.

Our Harvest assembly is coming along nicely. Just a reminder that this is not a parent assembly, and is for the rest of the school. Our parent assembly will be in the new year.

October holidays begin on the 15th October for one week.

On outdoor PE days for P3M/S please remember the children should come prepared with suitable clothes as it is getting colder.

Primary 3 28.9.18

We were so disappointed this week that we did not get to go to our Multisports Festival due to the weather not being on our side. We have a feeling Summer Winter did not want to be left alone whilst we were away and so made sure it rained hard all day! Hopefully this will be rescheduled for later in the term. Thank you so much for everyone coming to school prepared though!

We have been busy practising our songs and words for our school Harvest assembly. We  wrote acrostic poems to share our knowledge about Harvest, some of which you can see in the writing corridor.

Primary 3B (Miss Smith’s class) have been chosen to take part in Futsal every  Tuesday for the next 8 weeks and then Primary 3A (Mrs Smith/ Ms Matheson’s  class) will take part in this next term. We are very excited about this and looking forward to it. Nothing has changed, PE kit on the same days for 3B – Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The Parent’s night appointment books are now open and slowly filling, so be sure to book an appointment to come in for a chat. We are looking forward to seeing everyone again.

Primary 3 Friday 7th September 2018

We are now almost three weeks into the new term and we have been busy bees in Primary Three.

Our Weather topic has started and we have received a letter from the Weather Station explaining they need our help. They have a weather fairy, SummerWinter, who is not learning enough about the weather and is causing mayhem for us all on Earth. She has been sending the wrong information and people are going out dressed inappropriately for the weather so we are helping her learn. Mrs Thunder, her boss has been sending us missions.

This week we were asked to create our own weather forecasts and to present them to make a training video for SummerWinter.

We have also created a cloud to make communication easier between us and the Weather Station.

Primary Three are also beginning to learn about Seasons and relating these to crops and activities on farms in preparation for Harvest. Words for our first school assembly will be sent home after the September break, so please look out for these. This assembly is not a parents’ assembly and is for the rest of the school.

We loved meeting so many of you at Meet the Teacher. Thank you for discussing the class charter with you child and completing the tear off slip and achievement letter and returning these to school.

Just a wee reminder of what pupils need to bring on PE days.

Indoor – navy shorts, white t-shirt and indoor shoes/trainers

Outdoor – joggers, t-shirt, sweatshirt/hoody and outdoor trainers

Each class will have PE twice each week. Check out their class blog for up to date information on when PE Kit is needed.

A big shout out to P7 who are setting a great example already with the whole class remembering to bring PE kit each week.  Well done!

Primary 3 20.11.17

We have certainly been hustling and bustling with our nativity practice lately! Costumes have been fitted, lines being learned, dances being choreographed and positions being given and we can’t wait to show you what we have been working on! Thank you for going over children’s lines, the effort is really paying off.

 

Our Inclusion topic is well under way and we have been learning about the provisions in place to ensure people who have difficulties are included and provided for in and around our school and local area. We were interested to learn that some people’s difficulties cannot be seen, and rather, it is harder for them because of this.

 

St Andrew’s Day is not far away either and we have a new and interesting Scots song to learn. Here are the words, can you understand the story? Children have all been given a copy to learn over the next two weeks.

We look forward to seeing many of you at our Look, Write, Count event on Wednesday 22nd November from 6.30. Here, you will receive a wonderful free story bag with games and two picture books included, and have the opportunity to play some of the games with your child and perhaps hear a story!

Primary 3 3.10.17

Today all of our hard work from the past few weeks was demonstrated in our Harvest assembly. Lots of adults who watched us commented on how great our singing was, as well as our acting and art work.  The children did very well learning their lines and a big thank you to our farmers for remembering their farming clothes.

 

We have created posters in challenge groups explaining the reason we have seasons. We used pictures, diagrams and words to describe the Earth’s tilt and the way the Earth tilts away and towards the Sun.

 

We had a Futsall taster session today, for PE. We enjoyed showing our abilities, and a few of the activities really challenged our skills, especially ball control! We look forward to our session next week.

 

Reminders:

Remember after school club forms should be completed and returned to the office before the October break.

Parents night appointments are being made.

Primary 3 15.9.17

This week we have been busy plotting different weather on our map of Scotland. We have been identifying weather symbols, watching forecasts and creating forecasts of our own. Hopefully today we will get a few of our forecasts filmed and be able to send these to Mrs Thunder for SummerWinter’s training. Feel free to ask us about this!

We made seasons pictures where we used a variety of media to create the colours of the seasons. We experienced the use of oil pastels, paint, tissue paper and chalks to create different effects.

In Literacy this week, we looked at ways to make the ‘f’ sound. We focused on the phoneme ‘ph’ and discussed lots of words containing this sound. We hope the practice of common words is going well at home.

Homework

Thank you to everyone who has covered their jotters so far. Should anyone need paper for this, please do not hesitate to ask.

Reading is going well so thank you for practising this each night. Reading aloud and questioning the children helps them to use their reading strategies and helps you to see what they understand.

Can we remind everyone about the layout of spelling homework. Words given each week should be written out along one line using the Look, Cover, Write and Check format. Please encourage the children to show you the way they have been forming their new sounds for handwriting, where the letters are positioned on the line and where in the letter you start to write them.

Just a reminder, the children are off school on Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th.

Primary 3 Wk beginning 4th September

We are now into the full swing of Primary three and just yesterday we received a mysterious letter from Mrs Thunder wanting Primary Three’s help to learn more about the weather. This is great news as we have been discussing what we already know and what we would like to learn about our topic. We are going to practice our best handwriting and sentences when we write our own letters in response.
Homework
Weekly spelling
This week has also seen the start of homework. In their homework jotters, children have stuck in a small word list focusing on one sound a week. With this list, children should use a line per word to write each word as many times along the line as they can fit in, using the Look, Cover, Write, Check format.
A common words sheet has also been stuck in and although this does not need written evidence, it would be good if you could practice these with your child whenever you have time.
Handwriting
A handwriting sheet has been stuck in the front of jotters for children to practice at home. It would be good for the children to familiarise themselves with the correct letter formation.
Maths
We have been learning strategies for our Maths to make us more confident and speedier in our calculations. We recognised that it is much easier to add to a ‘friendly number’ (one with a 0 at the end) and because of this, we can shuffle numbers in our addition sums to make a ten first, then add the rest on.
Reading
We also have started reading. Please practice the pages given, stuck in the front of the homework diaries, out loud, checking for understanding and recognition of punctuation whilst we read.
With homework, we have set the days for handing out on a Monday, and return day a Friday as we would prefer to leave your weekends free. We welcome your comments on this. Perhaps some people prefer a weekend to be able to spend time doing it?

Primary 3 30.5.17

Primary 3 are going to be creating their very own dream play park out of junk! The children will work in small groups and use their prior knowledge and imagination to construct a park and the play equipment. The children will have to design their parks on paper, identifying what equipment they want to have and what materials they will require to complete the challenge. They will then work together to create their park and finally present their model to the class. We are looking forward to what master pieces are going to be constructed over the next couple of days!

If you have any recycling/junk at home, please send it in with your child. Thank you!

We are coming to the end of our division topic and the children have worked really well. We will still encourage the children to practise their times tables at home because they have been so helpful in allowing us to solve division questions and problems.

In Health we have been doing quite a bit of work on Road Safety. The children were able to discuss and clearly state the Green Cross Code and this week we will be discussing the importance of being SEEN while walking on footpaths and crossing the roads.

Primary 3 wb 8.5.17

Primary 3 have a busy week ahead!

In maths we are continuing our work on division. Children will be working on ways to divide by 2, 5 and 10. Any times table practice at homework will be greatly appreciated. We are trying to make links with our times tables and work out inverse problems. We are also continuing work on telling the time but shifting our focus to digital clocks. Children will be focusing on o’clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past.

Guided reading will continue this week and the children will be given pages from their book to read at home.

In health/technology we have been discussing internet safety. Children have been able to tell us how they can stay safe online but still have fun. Children recognised the importance of not sharing personal information, sharing with parents what they are doing online and not speaking to anyone that they do not know. Children are going to be creating their very own internet safety posters.

Spelling this week- we are focusing on words starting with qu.

If the good weather keeps up we will hopefully be outside as much as we can doing P.E and continuing work on our topic!

Lowport Lowdown 1

A very excited party of our Primary 3 children left Carmondean today on their very first residential adventure to Lowport Outdoor Centre, where they will spend 2 days involved in a variety of outdoor learning and cultural experiences. Primary 3 have an exciting week ahead. A number of our boys and girls are off to Lowport on Thursday until Friday. They will be doing lots of different outdoor activities and visiting some interesting places in Linlithgow. Children going to Lowport need to remember a packed lunch and a snack. Up to the minute news and pictures will appear on the BLOG.

The boys and girls staying at school will be continuing work on our topic- Outstanding Outdoors. They are going to be identifying and drawing plants and animals found in the garden, planting seeds in our big planters outside our classroom windows, going on a bug hunt and performing at our very own mini talent show!

In maths this term, we are focusing on division. The children will be using their knowledge of times tables and fractions to help them solve division questions and problem solving.

Our reading this term is Guided Reading, which the children are very familiar with. Reading homework will be done on a Tuesday and Thursday.

Spelling and Maths homework will be sent home today. Could it be handed back in for Thursday as it is a short week with children going to Lowport.

Primary 3 would like to say a huge thank you to all our visitors on Friday to our Medieval Banquet! The children really enjoyed sharing food, playing games and sharing their work. We hope you enjoyed it too!

Primary 3 20.3.17

Primary 3 are looking forward to their trip tomorrow to Edinburgh Castle. The weather is not looking great so could everyone come to school dressed for cold weather? Half of our trip will be spent in a workshop however the other half will be outside in the castle rooms and grounds. All children need to bring a packed lunch with them unless they have ordered one from the school. Everyone is looking forward to finishing up our topic with the visit to Edinburgh Castle.

We also have our medieval banquet this Friday which we are all looking forward to. Children have invited one member of their family to come and join us to celebrate our learning. Children have been asked to dress up for the occasion and everyone will get a chance to have some food and play some medieval games.

We are marking Earth Hour on Thursday by turning off our lights for one hour and creating hanging love hearts to share why we love our earth.

Primary 6 have organised Red Nose Day and have asked the children to donate cakes for a bake sale on Friday 24th March. Children have also been told they can dress up as one of the characters or wear the colours: red, black or white.

Primary 3 06.03.17

Primary 3 have their Parent Assembly next Monday so we have lots to do in preparation. Children will be learning their lines, singing their Three Brave Knights song and practising small drama pieces. There will be no spelling or maths homework this week. We look forward to showing you all our assembly on Monday.

In maths we are finishing up with money and moving onto time. Please encourage your children to read and tell the time with digital and analogue clocks. We have also been doing lots of work with fractions- finding a fraction of a shape and number.

In writing we are using our imaginations to write a short story about a dragon living in a castle. Children made their dragons out of clay and used them to help write their description of their dragon. This week we are creating a backdrop for our dragons to help us describe where our stories are going to be set.

Futsal will run as normal on Tuesday in the hall so indoor P.E kits are required.

Primary 3 20.2.17

Primary 3 have been very busy at home completing the Big Homework piece. We are both so pleased with everyone’s efforts, use of resources and imagination when building and constructing their castles. We had castles in all shapes and sizes. We had castles made from cardboard, plastic, play dough, lego and even chocolate! All children were able to present their castles to the class and they are now on display in our classrooms. Well done Primary 3!

In maths we are beginning to investigate fractions. We have been learning about a half and a quarter of a shape but this week we are going to be learning about a half and quarter of a number. We will be using lots of concrete materials to help support the children’s learning.

In writing we are making our very own fact files about knights and castles. The children have been learning note taking skills and have been putting these to the test by taking notes from topic books, websites and videos. Children are then going to use these notes to create a mini fact file with headings, pictures and sentences. We will display them once they are complete.

Futsal this week will be taking place outside. So could all children bring an OUTDOOR P.E kit on Tuesday.

Reading will continue as normal this week and the children will have spelling and maths homework to complete for Friday.

Primary 3 31.01.17

Primary 3 have been given a big piece of homework to completed by Thursday 16th February. Children are allowed to use a variety of materials but must clearly show the key features of a castle. (more detail on homework sheet)

This Friday we have been invited to a Sports festival! The children will be taking part in a number of sporting activities and it has been advised that they wear warm clothing (jogging bottoms, jumper and a coat) Children should come to school dressed in their kit as we will be out all morning.

In Maths this week we are introducing the 4x table. Could you please encourage your child to practise thier times tables at home as they will be required to know their 2,3,4,5 and 10 times table to help them solve fractions and  solve division questions.

We have recently set up a shop at the back of our class to help the children put their money skills that they have been learning to the test. We have also set up a role play corner based on knights and castles. We have recently purchased a castle tent and dressing up costumes. These were funded by the PSA. Primary 3 would like to say a big thank you!!

Primary 3 23.1.17

Primary 3 are learning about Scotland this week. We will be investigating Scottish Cities, Scottish food, Scottish song and dance, Scottish flag and Scottish landmarks. We are learning about Scotland as part of our Erasmus project. We will be taking lots of photos of our activities and completing short activities.

We start our Futsal workshop tomorrow which we are very excited about. Children will be learning Futsal skills, controlling the ball with their feet and working as part of a team.

We are handing out a BIG piece of homework. We are asking the children to build a medieval castle. The homework task sheet can be found in their spelling jotters. We are asking for the castles to be completed by Thursday 16th February.
