Good morning everyone!

It is the first of April today! Hope you are paying close attention to any possible tricks. Oh but also remember they stop after midday.

Are you excited for Easter?

We thought as a nice activity you could create an Easter card. Have a think about all the things that remind you of Easter: eggs, chicks, chocolate, rabbits, baskets or flowers. If you have access to the internet maybe an adult could help you search for some ideas.

Afterwards, you can choose your favourite idea and then use this to decorate a card! This is a great chance to get creative. We would love to see pictures of your cards on your learning journals.

Good morning Primary 3, we hope you are well and have been able to access and complete some more of the work. Yesterday was a beautiful day and hopefully some of you were able to get out for some fresh air while taking breaks in learning activities. We have looked forward to seeing the work and activities you have been up to and it has been brightening our days to see how enthusiastic you all are about making the most of your learning at home.

Maths today is based on timetables. Why don’t you try to fill out a timetable of your week. This can be a plan for this week, or you can fill it out for what you did last week. Good morning Primary 2,

It was so lovely to see what you have all been up to and the fabulous learning you have been doing. We reset all P2 parent passwords so please check your inbox. Miss Rafferty noticed lots of bears in windows when she was out her morning jog. Can you put a teddy bear in your window? If possible, go out a ‘bear hunt’ and count how many you can see around your neighbourhood!

Good morning Primary 1s
Today is the last day in March… can you remember the month that come next? Maybe this song will help you to remember?

We hope that you are all keeping safe and healthy. It has been great seeing all the hard work you have been up to over the past week. Thank you to everyone who has posted in their learning journal to show us the fantastic activities you have been doing at home. Later today we will hopefully post some more photos showing a selection of this work.
Today we would like you to complete 3 activities from the learning grids posted yesterday, preferably one literacy, one maths and one from the other curricular areas. Our focus fairy tale this week is ‘Goldilocks and the Three bears’. If you have the book of this story in your house then why not read it? Ask your child to close their eyes as they listen and imagine the story playing like a movie. After listening to the story, and only if you have spare time!, ask your child to retell the story. We would love to see some of this work on the Learning Journals and so, if you are able, why not film your child retelling the story. Your child could draw pictures or make playdoh/ craft models showing a few of the different scenes in the story as a prompt. Take your time with this task. It could be a project to be completed for the rest of the week, or over the Easter holidays?

Good morning everyone, we hope you had a fantastic weekend and were making use of your time off to relax and enjoy some of the things you like to do. We’d love to hear stories from your weekend and what you’ve been up to to keep yourselves entertained and your spirits high.

Good morning everybody!

We hope that you all had a lovely weekend and managed to spend some time outside, even just in the garden! We hope that you are all keeping healthy, helping out around the house and still finding time to play. The Primary 1 teachers are missing you all very much and we hope that you are still enjoying learning from home. We have been so impressed with all of your hard work, thank you again to all the parents that continue to post on the Learning Journals. It is lovely for us to see you all engaging with the activities we are providing.

Each Monday we will post three home learning grids on the blog and through the Learning Journals. There will be a grid for literacy, numeracy and learning across the curriculum. The grids will provide you with some suggested learning activities to complete throughout the week. We will also be posting some additional challenges on the blog for you and we will share some of the best examples on the school blog! Please don’t worry about completing all of the activities, remember these are just helpful suggestions to support you at home. You may still want to choose activities from the home learning pack at this stage and that is still encouraged! We are aiming to make the tasks set as flexible as possible so that you can fit them in around the other commitments you have.

Please find this week’s home learning grids and all the resources you will need below.  If you are unable to print these resources at home then perhaps your child could draw the pictures into their jotter instead. The Easter egg activity (in the maths section) might be a little tricky to draw so maybe you could help them get started by drawing a pattern in half of the egg.

Good morning boys and girls!

We hope you all had a wonderful weekend and managed to enjoy some of the sunshine. Today starts another week of learning at home. You should now refer to your second booklet for one literacy, one numeracy and one across the curriculum activity. Everything you are doing at home should be done in your red jotter. Please keep all extra sheets and take photos of things you have done or made. When we come back to school, we would like to see all your hard work!

Joe Wicks will be continuing his P.E lessons at 9am or if you prefer, you can do one of the Cosmic Kids yoga on YouTube.

Easter is just around the corner. How many of you have boiled eggs, decorated them and rolled them down the hill? Do you know what the rolling of the egg symbolises? There are lots of Easter crafts you could do this week with your family: make chocolate Easter nests, Easter cards, an Easter bonnet, or an Easter wreath to hang on your door.

Primary 3 Friday 27th March

So, today is Friday and marks one week of you all learning from home. We are so impressed with how well people have been engaging with the lessons and even with how inventive you have been with your own learning ideas. We want to thank you all, parents and P3 for your hard work this week. Remember, because today is Friday, you have a half day usually and have earned 30 minutes of Free Time Friday where you choose what you wish to do.

Today, we want you to focus on checking in with all the members of your family. Ask them how they are, discuss how you are feeling. Take some time out to reflect on the week that has passed.

Something to think about for next week is the RSPB page. using the hashtag 

Take photos and post the pictures of the birds you spot in your garden. You could even follow one of their handy guides on their website to make a bird feeder or bird house:

Just a little reminder:

A few of you have messaged saying you have had trouble with the sheets and resources we have been uploading. We have been instructed to save the resources as a picture or a screenshot the allow every person access to their learning. It means no-matter what software you have on your device and no-matter what device you are using, you can see the image of the learning task and therefore can complete it in your jotter or on paper.

If you would rather complete it on the physical sheet, try saving it and printing it off to make a physical worksheet, then you can write straight onto it.

We do not expect absolutely everything to be saved and sent to us, however if you wish to send things for clarification, marking or just because you want to share it with us, we are more than happy to receive your work. We love to see how you’re doing and what you have all been learning.

Primary 2 – 27.03.20

Good morning Primary 2,

Miss Pringle and Miss Rafferty here today. We hope you all had a nice day yesterday despite the weather being a little miserable. Did any of you manage to take part in the round of applause for our fabulous NHS staff at 8pm last night? We both did and it was lovely to hear everyone coming together to celebrate our hard working NHS staff.

You should have a few activities left on your week 1 sheets to choose from. Thanks to those who have let us know what they have been doing. We love to hear from you all so please continue to comment regularly.

Fridays usually include a handwriting lesson so please ensure any writing you do today is neat, with letters formed correctly.

Blair Drummond Safari Park are doing a live session on their Facebook page at 12pm each day where one of the keepers will tell you all about an animal. You can post questions for them to answer too. We watched it yesterday and it was fabulous! Let us know if you manage to tune in.

David Walliams is also reading 30 minutes from one of his books at 11am each day. You can find this on https://www.worldofdavidwalliams.com/elevenses/.

We have both been trying Joe Wickes each day – it is hard work but we both feel great afterwards. Miss Rafferty has also been out running each day. It is so important to try and keep our fitness levels up – what are you doing to keep yourself fit?

Happy Friday everyone!

We hope you’ve had a great first week learning from home. Remember please only do what you can, we know it’s a stressful time for everyone just now.

Today you could do a piece of writing! Here is a suggested activity to do in your castle book:

If I was trapped in a giant’s castle and I had to trick the giant, I would…

Copy out this sentence and then continue the story. You can get creative! This sentence is inspired by the fairy tale, Jack and the Beanstalk. What would you do to trick the giant, remember you don’t want him to catch you? You are much smaller than him so maybe you could tickle his ear, so he starts laughing. This would give you a chance to escape! I am sure you can come up with lots of ways to trick the giant.

Things to remember when writing:
• Full stops
• Capital letters
• Finger spaces
• Sound out the words on your own
• As a challenge: use a connective, for example, and

Please don’t worry if your child doesn’t spell each word correctly, they should write down the sounds they hear. You can say the word slowly to help them hear the sounds.

Once you are finished, we would love to see a picture of your writing posted on your online learning journal.

Educational Psychology Helpline

The Educational Psychology Service is launching a new telephone support service to help provide advice and consultation to West Lothian families, school staff, and our partner agencies during these unusual times.  We aim to provide support, advice, or even just a listening ear for anyone who has concerns about how to support their own or a child’s wellbeing.

The service will be available from Monday 30th March,  Monday to Friday from 9.30-12.30 and people are invited to call in to our main EPS number on  01506 283130 or send an email to our general email box at: ed.psych@westlothian.gov.uk to leave a message and an Educational Psychologist will call them back.

We would advise anyone who calls or emails in to give a brief description of the reason for their call and the child’s name (if they’re calling in relation to a particular child or young person) in their message.  This will help us to direct calls to an EP who may already be known to the family or member of staff,  though we welcome calls from everyone—regardless of whether they’ve had previous involvement with our service or not.

Clicker-8 and Clicker Writer

Crick Software, makers of the Clicker-8 talking word-processor and the Clicker Writer word processing App for iPad and Chromebook, have offered a free trial of these software packages to help children  with their learning at home. The software is particularly useful for children who find spelling and writing more challenging and lets them hear what they have typed, offers text prediction facilities and has loads more useful features

The free trial lasts for 6 weeks, after which the trial may be extended, or you may be given a special subscription rate if you wish to keep using the software, or you can simply choose to uininstall it.

Happy Thursday Everyone!

We hope your week is going well and you are all safe and happy at home. It’s been lovely to hear from some of you about what you have been up to and some of the activities you have been trying out. Today you can continue to look at your packs and choose a Literacy, Numeracy and Across the Curriculum activity to complete. In your pack today we have included an imaginative writing task about Blackbeard. Try to remember our imaginative writing targets as you write – you could maybe underline and self-assess with pink to make you think/green for go after you have finished.

-Can you use different starters?

-Are your characters involved in the action?

-Can you take a new paragraph for beginning, middle and end?

-Can you include a simple ending?

Good morning Primary 1s.

We are missing you loads and hope that you and your family are keeping safe. We have loved seeing some of the work you have done at home on the Learning Journals. If you have not yet posted then please do over the next few days. It is a great way for you to share your hard work and for us to stay in contact with each child. If you have forgotten your password or haven’t used this platform before, please email the school office and one of us will sort you out! Alternatively, you can post a comment on the blog and we can help you with any queries you have there.
You should still have your ‘Home Learning’ pack given out last week and we encourage you to keep working through the activities there. Our plan is to issue a new set of learning grids (similar to the Homework sheet) each week on Monday, but please don’t feel any pressure to have completed all of last week’s work by then. We are trying to be as flexible as possible because we appreciate that every household will have different conditions to work within.

Today’s suggested learning activities are:
Reading – We are keen to continue developing the children’s reading skills whilst they work from home. There are a few online resources which provide access to e-books and we will be sharing these with you over the next few weeks. Today have a look at starfall (link below). The book we would like the children to read is ‘Mox’s shop’. Most children should be able to read the words in this book and so we encourage you to sound out the words and only play the audio if there is a word that you get stuck on. After reading the book draw a picture in your yellow jotter showing your favourite part of the story and try to write a sentence describing what is happening. My favourite part was when Mox dropped the eggs all over the floor! Remember a sentence needs a capital letter, finger spaces and a full stop. Parents please don’t worry if spelling isn’t correct, at the moment our main objective is to build the children’s confidence having a go and hearing some sounds in words. If you are supporting please encourage the children to write their letters correctly. You might also like to play the ‘ot’ and ‘og’ games next to the story?

Maths– In maths this week we have been learning to split a number of objects or a shape into halves and quarters. If there is a particular activity your child enjoyed doing throughout the week why not try it again. Think about when we use halves and quarters in real life. For example, when making lunch you might cut your sandwiches in half, or if there are 4 people in your house you might give each person a quarter of an amount of sweeties after tea? Get creative and post your everyday examples on the learning journals. We might post some of your best ideas on the blog next week?! Make sure that you child understands that each part of the half or quarter must be the same (equal). Sometimes in class I do examples where I don’t share the objects equally and ask the children to say why it’s not fair! If you want to continue this learning, there are a few good games on Education City. Log on to the website and search under ‘subjects’ for numeracy. Then click on Early***. The games appropriate for the learning this week are called:

At the moment Education City is struggling with the number of people accessing it. When I was planning this lesson I found that pressing ‘reload’ when the error message appeared allowed me to get on the page. If that doesn’t work then maybe try again another time. The games require children to be able to visualise splitting a group/ shape in half and this will be difficult for most Primary 1s at this stage in their learning. To support your child I would suggest using objects found around your house. For example, if it says select half of the cakes and there are 10 cakes I would get out 10 objects (coins, pencils, rubbers, bead etc) and 2 plates. I would ask the children to split the 10 objects between the 2 plates equally and then select their answer on the game.

Fairytales– Continue with your challenge to create Jack’s beanstalk. We have really enjoyed seeing the progress in these creations on the Learning Journals and are looking into ways of sharing your pictures with everyone. Once your beanstalk is made, why don’t you act out the story of Jack and the Beanstalk using toy figures in your house. You could always make puppets of the main characters by drawing them on paper, cutting them out and sticking them on sticks from your garden? Kids Craft Club – Thursday

Here is the answer to yesterday’s problem solving task also. I will upload this to the files in teams to access later if you didn’t have the chance to try it yesterday.

Today, we have a little bit of multiplication for Numeracy. It is using vertical (chimney) sums which we began just before we left school. If there are any problems with this or how to do it, please let us know and we can talk you through the process again as a reminder.

Remember all of these activities are a supplement to your paper pack. Let us know how you are getting on with things or if we can help you out in any way. It has been fantastic being able to chat with you over the last few days. It has made missing being at school more bearable, especially seeing examples of what you have all been doing!

I saw a little challenge to brighten up people’s day, rainbows have been put up in people’s windows. Have any of you done this yet? It would be great to see them here on the blog or in our team space to brighten up our day! You know how we all love the colours of the rainbow!

Your reading task for today is to use the poem you looked at yesterday and try to write a descriptive paragraph putting yourself into the poem. Imagine that you are experiencing what is happening in the poem, how would you feel, what would you see, what smells would there be, would there be food and what would it taste like and what could you hear? Write it as a story and not as a poem, your paragraph does not have to rhyme.

Primary 4 learning from home update

Hello everyone. We hope you are keeping safe.  During the time school is closed we will be communicating via Teams. Many of you have already logged on to Teams which is great. Here are the logging in instructions for Teams just in case you don’t have them.

  1. Search for ‘West Lothian Glow’ site and log on to Glow. If you do not have your username and password for Glow please email the school.
  2. When logged onto Glow go into email.
  3. When in email you will see an email inviting you to join Teams. Please click on it and follow the instructions.
  4. Once you have set up, you can access Teams ongoing by clicking on the square of 9 WHITE dots at the top left hand side and selecting Teams.

Keeping active everyday

I’m sure lots of you have been trying to keep active every day however I know it will be hard now that we have to stay in our own house or garden.  If you come up with any great games/ways to stay active then let me know and we can share with everyone.
