RDA Presentations

Dalbeattie Primary was delighted to have a visit from representatives from the RDA (Riding For The Disabled) at our assembly  on Friday 11th December. Sue Gourlay from Barend presented some of our young people with certificates to celebrate their passing ‘Level 1 of Riding Practical and Knowledge Skills.’  Two other children, who have only started riding recently were awarded certificates for endeavour. The school is very grateful to Barend Riding School and to the RDA which is a charitable organisation and to its volunteers. The RDA provides a wonderful opportunity for our young people to learn new skills and to develop a relationship with horses.

Family Learning at Dalbeattie Primary

Roots of Empathy

Mrs Dunlop’s P3 Class have just finished ‘Crying’, the 2nd of the 9 Themes of our Roots of Empathy Programme. The programme aims to build caring, peaceful and civil societies through the development of empathy in children and adults.  By learning to understand other people’s feelings, as well as our own, we hope to reduce levels of bullying and aggression and promote children’s pro-social behaviours.

Sandy Brown, Family Learning Co-ordinator, is facilitating the programme with the help of a local family – Baby Jack and his Mum, Lisa Ashton, who kindly volunteered to visit the class 9 times between October and June.  Baby Jack and Mum Lisa have now visited the class twice, and the children have been learning about human development, feelings, and temperament by observing Jack, asking questions, and studying the loving relationship that is growing between mother and child.

‘Let’s Cook from Scratch’

Seven P6 & 7 Pupils, 1 Grandmother, 1 Dad and 5 Mums have been participating in 6 x Family Learning ‘Let’s Cook from Scratch’ after school taster sessions. Richard Lines from the NHS Health Improvement West Team ran the sessions.

Families discussed basic kitchen safety, practiced safe knife skills, prepared raw ingredients, learned several core cooking methods and made healthy nutritious meals using fresh ingredients. They were all challenged to prepare and cook at least 1 of the dishes, made during the sessions, for their families, and share their feedback about the experience to the group.

All 7 pupils are keen to arrange more sessions to build their knowledge and skills, and confidently help their parents prepare and cook nutritious meals at home.

Victorian School Day

On Thursday 19th November, Primary 1 and Primary 1/2 had a wonderful day pretending to be in a Victorian school. They have been learning about the history of our school and have been really engaged in finding out about life in the past. The children played playground games including hopscotch, clapping games, skipping, oranges and lemons, and marbles. They took part in some old fashioned literacy lessons. We were so impressed with how engaged and motivated the children were in taking part in all the activities. Several parents from the upper school had donated outfits which some of the children were able to try on! Dumfries Library allowed us to use a box with artefacts and photographs from Victorian schools and the children were very interested in all the old objects and how they were used. The children then used these experiences to help them write a short story about being at school a long time ago! It was a fantastic day and both the staff and children enjoyed it a great deal!

Nine Primary Seven pupils were picked to play for and represent Dalbeattie Primary School at this regional (Dumfries District) event today at Palmerstone Arena in Dumfries. The event was a qualifying round for the SFA Soccer Sevens competition that runs throughout Scotland.  The team represented the school very well and showed fantastic sporting behaviours and attitudes. Fundraising

Friday 13th was the day for a very successful fundraiser at Dalbeattie Primary where the proceeds were divided between Children in Need and The Janice Jamieson Memorial Trust Fund. Pupils enjoyed having a non uniform day and brought in £1 each. Some children chose to dress up as superheroes or as champions. ‘Champions’ was also the theme of an extra ‘Sports Champion’ anagram quiz. Our pictures show some of the children in their superhero or sports champions outfits. Our 11 school councillors are pictured with an array of Pudsey prizes before presenting them to 4 lucky winners, Emma Newbould, Finlay Burns, Amie McKerrow and Rhuari Webster. Money going to the Janice Jamieson Memorial Trust Fund will be used to sponsor a young person through his/her education in Malawi.

Ready Steady Cook Harvest Assembly

Dalbeattie Primary has been celebrating Harvest time with a new approach this year…and it certainly had all the pupils completely engaged! Two of the teachers, Mrs Dawes and Mrs Burn were willing participants in a game of Ready Steady Cook. Head Teacher Mrs Duncan set the challenge by presenting each candidate with a selection of vegetables or fruit. While the green pepper contestant’s dish of vegetables  arranged as a scarecrow’s face did prove very popular with the pupils, it was the red tomato contestant who won the challenge; the children voted for her ‘Seasonal fruit Salad.’

The challenge, although fun, reminded the children about being thankful for our harvest and the assembly was made complete with harvest songs and a prayer of thanks.

Mrs Dawes and Mrs Burn both hard at work.
