Health – Smoking

P6 were leading their own learning this week in their challenge to learn about the effects of smoking and to share their new knowledge with the class in a creative way. The children chose whether to work in groups, pairs or individually as well as how to research and present their information. The children created posters, powerpoints, board games, coding games, quizzes and information leaflets which they shared with each other. Well done everyone. I learnt lots from you all too.

 

 

British Science Week

How are rainbows made? Thank you to S3 Dalbeattie High School Physics students, Eve and Olive who visited P6 to teach us how rainbows are made. The children carried out experiments to learn how light travels through a prism. They used light boxes and drew how the light travelled through a variety of prisms then discussed how this was like rainbows being formed through a process called refraction.

British Science Week: Chemistry pH Levels

P6 invited parents to join us for a Science experiment to test household substances using red cabbage indicator. The children and parents discussed whether they thought the liquid such as lemon juice, vinegar, milk, baking soda and handwash was an acid, neutral or alkali then tested their predictions with red cabbage indicator. They checked their pH colour chart to see if their hypothesis was correct. Thank you very much parents for joining us – the children really enjoyed having you involved in their learning.

Environmental Engineering – Water Filter Challenge 

P6 have been learning about Environmental Engineering this term – how we collect, manage and filter water using gullies and drains. We had a Teams Meet with Elaine from BEAR Scotland who set us the challenge to design and build a water filter to remove pollutants from water.  The children used Engineering design process to design and plan what they were going to do, build and test their prototype and then think about how they could improve their water filter designs.  The children chose a variety of materials to create their water filter systems including stones, sand, cloth, filter paper, cotton balls and sieves. Great team work P6 – well done!

SKA DANCE:

Films

We had fun yesterday learning to Ska dance. It links with our learning about Jamaica. We had a lot of fun creating our own dances. (Not everyone was keen on being filmed.)  Can anyone remember how many different styles there are?

Term 2 Learning

William Morris inspired wallpaper design, Queen Victoria portraits, technology bridge designs, making 3D shapes with nets, shape tessellations, health and wellbeing games with S2 students, creative dance,  french sport board games and dictionary work, information reports about the Victorians & Scottish country dancing.

We’ve had a busy day today recapping time connectives and subtraction, going back to Eerie on Sea to find out more about Herbie and Violet and learning about Bessie Coleman in our topic lesson. Can anyone tell someone at home what Bessie Coleman did?

Create a piece of writing using Malamander to inspire you. Imagine you have found something and you need to get it to Herbie Lemon. What have you found? What does Herbie think of it? Can you get it back to the person who owns it? Does this lead to an adventure? 

Can you draw a picture of Herbie? How do you imagine him? 

Improve these sentences. What do you need to change to make them more interesting?

Home Learning Ideas 26.9.23

Hello everyone, this is a list of activities to do today (Tuesday 26.9) Please do not feel like you have to complete them all, they are for you to choose from. Please feel free to email me to show me some of your work or just to say hello. 

  • Write a list of questions that you would like to ask Herbie. (From our whole class reading in a morning.) 

 

  • Draw a detailed picture of what you think the Malamander looks like. Can you colour it in and label it? 

 

  • Write a diary entry for one day of the weekend. Remember to say what happened, in order. Can you use time connectives to start your paragraphs? (First, Then, Next, After that, Finally) Remember to say what happened, describe it and say how you felt about it. 

 

  • Can you find a lovely space to read your book for 30 minutes? 

 

  • Can you create a symmetrical picture using things from outside? (Or things from inside.) Could you make one half and someone else make the other half?

Outdoor Maths Activities KS1 -Maths Outdoor Learning – Play of the Wild

  • Work on knowing your 3x table really well. Can you say it forwards, backwards. Can you say it while doing a balance? Can you make it ten times bigger or ten times smaller? (50 x 3 =                0.8 x 3 =      )  Can you teach it to someone else? 

 

  • Can you make up an outdoor learning game to help us learn our tables? 

 

  • This week is Maths Weeks Scotland, children all over the country will be taking part in different activities. We did one yesterday where we estimated how many star jumps we could do in one minute then we counted and compared the difference. Can you do this with someone at home but do tuck jumps or shuttle runs or something else instead? 

 

  • Can you use some of your things at home to create a maze/set of tunnels for Barnabus? (Like the mazes we have started doing at school but using socks, lego, building blocks) 

 

15/09/23   Today Primary 6 pupils had the chance to apply to be our P6 School Council Representative and our P6 Eco Representative.  The children gave some fantastic speeches about why they would be great for the roles and then the class voted for their favourite candidates.  I am pleased to announce that Lily was voted as our class School Council Rep and Mollie was voted as our Eco Rep.  Congratulations to both girls and well done to everybody who was confident enough to give it a go!
