Assembly and HT Awards 15.3.24

Some great singing in assembly today as we had a run through of all the songs for church next week.  Great effort being put in by all the classes to learn these.

HT awards given for a range of achievements as always. Lots of children demonstrating the value of kindness this week and it was great to hear about what they have been doing to show kindness. Several awards were given for progress in numeracy and being able to demonstrate strategies. We also had awards for showing more focus and concentration in learning as well. We had role models in some classes celebrated today as well as awards for skills development in PE from Mrs Grey. Well done to all our award winners this week.

Prizes were also given out for book cover designs that were completed last week as part of our world book day activities. Each class were asked to create a book cover and possibly a blurb about a title from a list shared by myself. Well done to the winners from each class.

Katie our Rota Kids president also shared information at assembly today about an Easter Egg competition that the Rota Kids are organising.  More details below.

Children in Need

At Dalbeattie Primary we have raised approximately £380 for Children in Need and a further £150 for sponsoring a young person’s education in Malawi as our yearly pledge to the Janice Jamieson Memorial Foundation. Through the week
we have been raising money with our spotty ball pit lucky dip and through having a non uniform day. 11 lucky winners won Pudsey prizes because their lucky ball numbers were picked from the hat. Well done the School Pupil Council  for organising this and working hard to co-ordinate the drawing of the ball numbers. Thank you all for your terrific support for these charities.

Assembly and HT Awards

We started the first assembly of the term with some hymns. The P6 and P7 had great recall of these and encouraged the younger classes to sing along.

We celebrated the success of our group 7 Stars who participated in the Stewartry Active Schools dance festival. The group was awarded best overall performance. The picture taken today shows 6 of the 7 stars. We will update on Monday with our 7 Stars. The group will perform their dance to us at a future assembly. Pictures and videos will also appear on active schools Facebook page.

Awards were presented this week for underwriting a super sentence, being a super star and role model to others in the class, being an excellent listener, excellent attitude to learning and wonderful literacy skills, showing leadership in creating dance routines, being determined to succeed with learning and enjoying a new history topic.

A very busy assembly this week. We celebrated harvest time by singing some of the songs we have been learning this term. We thought about things we are thankful for particularly the food we have and the producers that are busy at this time of year harvesting crops.  Thank you to everyone that has sent in items  for challenge poverty week. Items donated will be shared with the local food bank.

We were joined by representatives from Dalbeattie Rotary Club today to celebrate winning the National Rotary Young Environmentalist competition. Our young environmentalists Rory, Isabella and Lucy were presented with this award by Kate Kerr the President of Dalbeattie Rotary Club. P1-P3 Sponsored Walk

Despite the rain P1-P3 participated in their sponsored walk around Rounall Woods today. Everyone was amazing and walked round the woods in good spirits. The buzz that could be hear from the front was fantastic. I think there was a bit of fun splashing in the muddy puddles too.
Thank you to all parents who were able to join us on the walk. It was great to have you with us. Thank you also to Mr Drennan and the sports leaders from Dalbeattie High School.

P4-P7 walk tomorrow.

One Planet Picnic

Dalbeattie Primary has just held its One Planet Picnic, an initiative encouraged by Eco Schools Scotland to build awareness of locally sourced food items in order to help with working towards sustainability and reduction of our carbon footprint. For our ‘One Planet Picnic’ we not only created our own home baking using home grown produce but we encouraged the children to bring in their own morning snacks, which were locally sourced, to tell their classmates about at morning breaktime at ‘Snack  and Chat’ time. We are very grateful for everyone at home for supporting this event so well. We were amazed by the amount of snacks children brought which had been locally sourced in some way. There was everything from home grown apples and carrot sticks to items baked locally together with local cheese and pate. There were some wonderful ideas of things to bring in. Meanwhile, on the same day, the Eco Schools Group had been busy, along with Mrs Houston from the High School’s Hospitality Department, baking individuals carrot muffins using home grown vegetables. The cakes were delivered to the classrooms later on the same day for our pupils to enjoy,  following on perfectly from Mrs Duncan’s Harvest Assembly earlier in the day. Primary 6 also had a go at baking bread using some of their own home grown wheat.

Start of Fairtrade Fortnight 2020

Today, in school, we marked the start of Fairtrade Fortnight with our ‘Fairtrade Morning Snack.’ This was helped greatly by donations from local businesses Co-op, Tesco and Kinnairds. The main snack on offer was a choice of Fairtrade bananas or our own crafted shortbread biscuits topped with chocolate and jelly beans.  At the time of writing, we are not sure what amount of money we have raised from this but any proceeds will go to the Fairtrade Foundation. Later in the day,  Primary 5 together with the school’s Eco Committee listened to a very informative presentation by Mary Van Zwanenberg which included a very interesting film ‘Guardians of the Rainforest.’  Many of our classes also took part in class learning. Primary 1/2 had lots of Fairtarde themed activities in the open area. The end of Fairtrade Fortnight will be marked at assembly on 6th March with a small play by the Eco Committee.
