Viking Topic Celebration 

Last week we welcomed Cathbad and Tohma to our class to teach us more about Viking life. It was a fantastic way to end our topic and the children were fully engaged in all activities across the day. Particular favourites were the story where the children got to dress up, learning about Viking weapons, taking part in shield wall training and also the Settler to Sea King game.
Thank you to all parents who contributed towards the cost of this event.

Term 3 Numeracy – Multiplication and Division

This term the Circles and Squares have been busy learning their 2 and 5 times tables. They have also learned the relationship between multiplication and division and can use their tables to help when dividing by 2 and 5. Next term we will carry on with this and look at the other tables, and related division, starting with the 10 times table.

We would encourage you to practise the tables with your child at home to improve recall speed. As well as asking oral questions, the child would enjoy playing some of the online maths games that we do in class such as Topmarks, Maths Frame, Sumdog and Education City.

 

Term 3 PE

This term the children have enjoyed developing their skills in gymnastics with Mrs Gray. The boys and girls love the opportunity to test their bravery and skills on all of the different apparatus. They have also worked hard to improve their fitness.

Viking Homework Project

Please see the picture below regarding our Viking longship homework task for this term. We look forward to the pupils presenting their longship designs to the class and hearing all about the materials they chose to use, their design ideas and if they came across any challenges whilst building their model. They will have the opportunity to answer questions from their audience and we hope to also share their work with other members of the school.

We hope you see the value in the making of the models at home, as well as the presentations to the class, and thank you for the support in completing this task. If you require any materials, please let us know by sending us an email or a note via the office, but we hope that they will mostly be made of recycled items.

TERM 3 PE

In Term 3 our PE days will be a Monday and Thursday. On a Monday, please send PE kits in a bag for the children to change into at school. They will come home in their kits. On a Thursday, please continue to send your child to school in their PE kit, with their school clothes in their bag. Thank you.

Online Learning

Literacy–

Pupils have their new reading books in their bags. Some also have word cards to practise.

Spelling homework jotters were sent home. These can be practised in a number of ways. Below are some ideas:

• Rainbow words
• Highlight the spelling pattern
• Read, copy, cover, write
• Write in a sentence
• Bubble writing
• Make with playdough
• Write with chalk.

Write a description of one of your teddies. Make sure your sentences have capital letters and full stops in the right places. Try to use joining words to extend your ideas. Think about the sentences we talk about using in class. Remember that you need to start with an introduction and end with your opinion, then choose at least 4 different sentence types to include:
-Number
-Size
-Colour
-Texture
-Shape
-Position
-Doing

e.g.
Scruff is a lion. He is 34 years old and my dad bought him for me when I was born. He has beige fur and a brown mane. Scruff has a long tail. His mane is messy and a bit matted because he is so old. He lies on my son’s bed with all his other teddies. I love Scruff because he is the first teddy I was given and I’ve had him all my life.

Numeracy-

We have been working on numbers to 100/200. You can practise some of the work we have been doing in class by:

• Oral counting forwards in 1s from different numbers
• Oral counting backwards in 1s from different numbers
• Saying 3 numbers (forwards and backwards), can your child say the next number? Can they say the next 3 numbers?
• Writing some number sequences with missing numbers (forwards and backwards) and asking your child to fill in the gaps
• Write a 2 or 3 digit number and ask, ‘How many tens? How many hundreds? How many units?’
• Ask your child to write a 2 or 3 digit number with ‘? tens, ? units, ? hundreds? Can they get the digits in the correct order.
• Use loose parts such as small toys, dry cereal, dry pasta etc to make numbers. eg 156 – 1 strand of spaghetti, 5 pieces of penne and 6 pieces of macaroni.

Addition/Subtraction:

• Revise all doubles and near doubles – the aim is to know them quickly and confidently.
• Make up some quad sums from these sets of numbers:
• 6, 7 and 13
• 7, 8 and 15
• 5, 6 and 11
• 8, 9 and 17
• Remember to find 2 addition sums and 2 subtraction sums.  This really helps to see the connection between addition and subtraction.  If we know 6 + 7 = 13 then we also know 13-7 = 6

Measure:

• We have been learning how to use rulers to measure the length of things in cm accurately.  If you have a ruler at home maybe you could measure the length of some things around your house and garden.
• Can you draw lines the following lengths:
• 10cm,  7 cm, 15cm, 12 cm, 8 cm, 9.5 cm, 12.5cm, 20cm and 3.5cm.

Topic-

Take time to work on your homework project – details were previously sent home in an email.

Go for a walk to identify local trees – look at the leaves, flowers, fruit and seeds as we have been doing in class.

Gather seeds from different trees (acorns, conkers, helicopters etc) and experiment how they travel the best. If you drop them do they roll? Can they float on water? Does the wind carry them? Can they hook on fur/clothing?

Look at Education City to find some games to play.

PE-

In PE, we have been practising hopping, leaping, and jumping on 2 feet. These skills all help to develop skipping. Why not try some skipping with a hula hoop or rope at home or play a game of hop scotch.

You could also use one of Mrs Gray’s home learning videos on her blog page or try some Joe Wicks workouts on Youtube.

Fairtrade banana booklet was sent home.

 

Term 1

21.9.23 – Woodlands Topic – Thank you to all pupils and parents/carers who collected leaves, fruits, flowers, berries and seeds from the local area. We looked at the different varieties of native Scottish trees and sorted the items into the different types of tree. There were some that we were unsure of so we used an app and website to identify them.
