The Romans Play

On Friday 23rd March, history was made in Dalbeattie Primary, within Dalbeattie Learning Campus.  Primary 4, under the direction of Mrs Anderson, staged our first dramatic performance in the Primary School Hall. This was the first time, out stage had been opened up to the hall to showcase a play. Primary 4 rose to the occasion. They worked so hard to learn their lines and knew all their parts well. By the end of the show, we had all learned so much more about life in Roman villas and how to build Roman roads. Well done Primary 4 and Mrs Anderson for making history!

Scots Poetry Assembly

Today, we heard all our winners from Primary 1 to Primary 7 recite their poems which they had been practising recently. The quality was excellent and it was clear why they had all earned first places in the recent competition.

Scots Poetry Winners

On Thursday 8th of February, class teachers swapped classes for the morning to under take our annual Scots poetry judging. Class teachers had selected 10 pupils to go through in each class to finals day. The standards in all classes were once again very high and staff had some difficult decisions to make during the judging process. Well done to all pupils for learning their poems and participating in this event. Congratulations also to our overall winners. P7 judging will take place on Thursday 15th of February when we will be joined by members of Dalbeattie Burns Club.

Bin Bag Fashion Show January 2017

Primary 6/7 delighted us all with a catwalk show of their wonderfully unique designs made from recycled plastic bin bags. The show was the result of a very interesting class topic about clothes. It was amazing to see the range of designs created by our pupils. Mrs Burn talked us through the design processes behind each unique item or collection. Here are just a  few of the pictures.

Scottish Opera Tale O Tam

Dalbeattie Primary has just staged a terrific performance of Scottish Opera’s  ‘Tale O Tam.’

Primary 6 and 7 pupils made up the chorus groups of ‘The Tavern Crew,’ ‘The Witches Crew’ and the ‘Stormy Crew.’

The opera told the familiar story of Tam O Shanter drinking late in the tavern before making his way home on his old grey mare Meg before stopping to look through the window of the auld Kirk by Alloway where he sees the witches and warlocks dancing with the devil. He shouts out ‘Well done Cutty Sark’ and the witches take chase after him. He reaches the keystone of the brig but only after the witch pulls off Meg’s tail.

The whole show was fantastic: the singing was tremendous and the costumes were brilliant. The school is very grateful to Scottish Opera for coming to school to deliver a day’s workshops and rehearsals in the morning before the actual show in the afternoon. The school is also very grateful to class teachers and especially to Kate Picken who helped the children to learn and prepare the songs and music in the weeks ahead of the actual day. The whole school enjoyed watching the dress rehearsal before parents came to watch the final show before the end of the school day. This year’s Scottish Opera was funded through the Creative Scotland’s YMI (Youth Music Initiative.)

Country Dancers at Civic Daze

Some of our festival winning country dancers performed a selection of dances today at a Civic Daze event in Colliston Park. This was a first public performance for some and they danced beautifully. Well done everyone and thank you to Mrs Fortnum and Mrs McMinn for supporting the dancers today.
