Primary 5

P5 have been working on a variety of tasks this week.

In Topic each country group has presented their display to the class. They came up with some unusual facts to share with each other. Both Miss Morris and Mrs Gilmour are very impressed with the effort all the children put into this! You will have an opportunity to read these when you visit us on Parents’ night and on our open day in October.

In writing the children have started to investigate the persuasive genre. They are writing letters to persuade people to come to our open morning using persuasive language. Look out for these letters coming home soon.

On Wednesday both classes took part in a Multi-sport Festival at DCHS. This was a great success and the children enjoyed trying out a variety of sports and meeting new friends. They were able to learn new skills in basketball, football, hockey, team games and athletics. Well done everyone!

Over the past few weeks the children have been learning about patron saints in R&ME. This Thursday Miss Morris’ class learned about Scotland’s patron saint, Saint Andrew, whilst Mrs Gilmour’s class looked at Saint David, who is the patron saint of Wales. We have all really enjoyed learning about the different traditions each country in the UK has when celebrating these religious figures.

Primary 4 13.9.19

Hello everyone

Primary 4 have been working very hard this week. We have been exploring the use of digital clocks and looking at how o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to are written on digital clocks. Next week we will be learning more about this and exploring am and pm. Please continue to ask your child about what they are learning at home.

Thank you for all the support that you have provided the children in completing their first piece of homework in Primary 4. Homework jotters were due in yesterday and the children will be sharing their homework with their peers and their teacher today in class. New homework will be handed out next Wednesday 18th and once again the children will have 2 weeks to complete the starred activities and any of the extra activities they wish to complete.

In writing this week the children were learning about writing in paragraphs. The children were able to identify where paragraphs should start and end and what the main idea of a paragraph is in a text. Next week the children will be writing about themselves using paragraphs. We can’t wait to see how they get on 🙂

Hello to all,

The children have been working hard on a variety of activities this week.

All children were given their BIG Homework task on Wednesday which is to be completed by Friday 27th September. The children can choose any landmark they wish and use a variety of materials to build their model. If you encounter any difficulties with this task please contact us at school. Good Luck and have fun building!

We have been using our imagination when writing. Our story is set in the woods and the children have been working hard on thinking of imaginative words to describe the setting. Some of these were our Word Boost words as well.

Another key focus this week has been internet safety. We have been looking at how to stay safe online when on different websites and games. We would appreciate it if you could also discuss this with your child.

A gentle reminder about PE kit. It is important that the children have a PE kit they can change in to for indoor and outdoor PE. Unfortunately quite a few children are coming to school with no kit. Please can you ensure that your child has outdoor kit on a Monday and indoor kit on a Thursday. Thank you for your help and support with this.

In maths we are investigating symmetry. We have been discussing what makes a shape symmetrical and drawing symmetrical patterns. As homework please could you support your child to look for real life examples of symmetry at home and in the community. Thank you.

Primary 5 16.06.09

Primary 5 have had a fantastic week. On Thursday we performed our show Rockbottom Rocks. We were so proud of the children; they sang, danced and acted so well and had great fun doing it. A big thank you to all parents and families who came to see us, having such a good audience made the performance special to us.

This week we have continued to work on our topic Charlie and the Chocolate factory. We wrote stories about a visit to Loompa Land to bring the Oompa Loompas back to the factory. Everyone has worked hard and really enjoyed writing these stories.

In maths we completed our weight topic with a problem solving activity afternoon. We weighed out ingredients to make chocolate crispies, worked on studyladder and worked on problem solving activities.

We have been thinking about sports day next week and in PE we identified the fastest runners for each house for the house relay. We look forward to seeing you next Thursday morning. Remember to wear house colours if possible.

Primary 4 23.5.19

Hello everyone

It was lovely to welcome the children back after the long weekend. They had lots of lovely stories to share 🙂

In PE we are beginning some work on different aspects of Athletics. So far we have been discussing and working on the skills of short and long distance running. The children also used a baton during relay races which required lots of team work and communication. Hurdles have also introduced while running short distances and this has provided extra challenge! We look forward to seeing the children grow and improve in this area this term 🙂

Last week everyone wrote an imaginative piece of writing all about the adventures of Charlotte and Wilbur from our reading book – Charlotte’s Web. These stories were very detailed and full of interesting adventures! The children are now developing the skills of redrafting their work, with excellent spelling and handwriting being very important. Well done everyone for working hard on this!

Our caterpillars are in their chrysalis’! Over the long weekend some of the caterpillars attached themselves to the roof of their container and transformed into a chrysalis. Some did their transformations on the ground. Mr Shanks helped us to move them all from their small container to their much bigger netted container which will hold them when they are butterflies. We are loving watching them grow and develop! Stay tuned for further updates.

Primary 5 10/05/19

Good Afternoon,

Hope you all had a lovely long weekend, great hearing all the children’s news when they returned on Wednesday.

We have had a busy few days, in Math’s we continued looking at money, adding up different items from a menu and problem solving with decimal points.

In Literacy, the children carried on planning and writing their newspaper report on Willy Wonka’s competition to win 5 golden tickets, great seeing them come together!

Show rehearsals are now in full swing. We would really appreciate if you could continue to practice any words your child has to learn with them at home. The show performances are on Thursday 13th June at 1:30pm and 6:30pm. More details will be provided about tickets for this event soon.

Please remember that the P5s have their Learn to Swim session at DCHS on 15th May.

Primary 4 15.3.19

Hello everyone

We have had a very exciting week in Primary 4 this week. We have been continuing to rehearse our space assembly which we will perform to parents, families, carers and the upper school on Friday 22nd March at 9:10am. Your child should have received a letter home about this now. Please fill in the tear off slip and return to the school as soon as possible if you can attend.

Next week we will begin to hand out spelling homework again after two weeks of charting the movements of the moon. Thank you for supporting your child with this at home. It has been really interesting to hear the children’s observations of what is happening in the night sky.

This week in writing we began to write a report about The International Space Station. We were fascinated to learn about how the ISS was created and how it makes one orbit around the earth every 90 minutes! This week we wrote our introductions to the report and we will continue to work on our reports for the next few weeks.

Today we were learning about how rockets take off. We learned that hydrogen and oxygen are mixed together to create a reaction. This thrust then allows the rocket to escape the earth’s gravity and take off. The children then made their own rockets that took off into the sky. We went out into the playground and used film canisters, alka seltzer, coca cola and water to send our rockets flying into the sky! This was very exciting! Look out for a video of these rockets at our assembly next week!

P4C visit to Carmondean Library

On Wednesday P4C were extremely lucky to be invited to an event organised by Knightsridge Primary School at Carmondean Library. The P4 children at Knightsridge had written and illustrated fantastic story books for P4C to enjoy! Some books were talking books, featured props and models and one book was even written and illustrated in braille! There were also many other visitors there who enjoyed hearing some fantastic tales! P4C were a fantastic quality audience who listened carefully, asked thoughtful questions and complimented the children on their work. Thank you to Knightsridge Primary for inviting us and for all their hard work to organise such a great event. Please see some photos below. Primary 4 30.1.19

Hello everyone

This week has been a fun one in Primary 4.

In maths we have introduced division and the children have been impressing us with their knowledge of dividing by 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10. We will continue to work on this next week as well as introducing division and multiplication by 8. The children are learning about the link between division and multiplication. Any support you can provide your child with this would be greatly appreciated.

In topic Miss Clark’s class have been exploring DC Thomson and the world of comic books with Miss Roscilli. Today they made their very own comic strips all about meeting and defeating a dangerous Kelpie. They look fantastic so far 🙂 In Miss Donaldson’s class they have been exploring the world of Scottish mythical creatures! They learned about Kelpies and Water Horses and made excellent artistic creations that show several mythical creatures from Scotland. They look great!

Well done to Noah and Katie who recited their Scottish poems at the Burns Afternoon. The rest of Primary 4 also performed the Scottish song “Bananas” to visitors at the event. Well done P4!

Primary 4 1.12.18

Hello everyone

Primary 4 had a very exciting week! The children worked very well in their enterprise groups to finish their products. Human Resources did an excellent job at supporting every group while Accounts calculated our profit; Quality Control worked on repairing bottles; Marketing picked our company logo and Advertising chose the best posters to be displayed. The reindeer sweetie bottles have now arrived home. Thank you all for your support of our Enterprise Project. It was a very valuable experience for the children to take part in.

Our PE days are changing. There will be a note in homework diaries about this on Monday. PE with Mrs Ferguson will now take place on Wednesdays. Outdoor PE will remain on a Tuesday. We also look forward to art lessons with Ms Fox starting on Wednesday also. The children will no longer take part in the weekly mile on a Friday. This will reconvene in the summer term.

In writing the children worked very hard to create excellent beginnings to their story “The Magic Collar”. Earlier in the week the children had enjoyed exploring a story all about Lumi the dog with the magical collar who spent time with Santa and his reindeer in the North Pole. The children then wrote their own stories about dogs with magical collars trying their best to write in full sentences and include some of our special trickier “boost” words (glimmering, whirled, drifted and anticipation) in their own writing. The children worked fantastically well and these stories will be a fabulous read when they are completed. 🙂

Primary 4 15.11.18

Hello everyone

We have had a busy but interesting week in Primary 4.

In maths we have been learning how to answer subtraction questions using the written method. The children have been working hard to exchange when they do not have the number of ones required. We have also been practising quick recall of subtraction facts within 20. Please practise these facts with your child at home.

In writing we wrote scripts in groups of 3. We were telling imaginative stories about the Vikings we had created previously. The children worked very hard to incorporate stage directions into their scripts. They also used colons when introducing what a character was about to say. Next week the children will act out their scripts in front of an audience. We can’t wait to see the finished products!

We began exploring our new topic of Enterprise this week. The children discussed what they wanted to learn and how they want to learn. They also came up with some ideas for the name of our company and filled in job application forms for different roles within our business. We will be making reindeer sweetie bottles to sell to family and friends. The children are very excited and we’re sure that the finished products will be fabulous! 🙂

The Christmas Fair is on Friday 30th November from 6-8pm. Tickets are available from the school office or able to be purchased on the night.

Letters were sent out earlier this week for the school Christmas Lunch. This will take place on Tuesday 4th December. Children should order their lunch by next Wednesday or they will not be able to have a Christmas lunch on this day. If your child does not wish to have a Christmas lunch then they should bring a packed lunch to school on this day.

Primary 4 7.11.18

Hello everyone

We’ve had a good week in Primary 4 so far. In writing we finished writing our fabulous Halloween stories and they are fantastic. They were filled with adjectives, exciting details and spooky characters! Well done boys and girls!

In reading the children have been working hard to read their books carefully looking for tricky words. They have then been beginning to use a dictionary to search for the definitions of these words in order to develop their understandings. This task has been challenging but the children have been working so hard and are developing their ability to use a dictionary quickly and effectively.

Tomorrow will be a very exciting day in Primary 4 as we host our “Viking Bake Off” event. Miss Millar and Mr Shanks will judge our creations! The children will make sweet oat cakes with honey and will get to taste their own handiwork! We can’t wait to see how they turn out 🙂

Christmas Fair letters have now been sent home along with raffle tickets. The Christmas Fair is on Friday 30th November from 6-8pm. You can buy tickets by returning the tear off slip to school or speaking to office staff.

Primary 7 are still selling Poppies 50p/£1 preferred donation. We are looking forward to attending the P7 Remembrance Assembly on Friday to learn more.

Primary 2 6.11.18

Primary 2 have been working very hard over the past week.

In writing they managed to write a narrative piece of writing about their evening of trick or treating/Halloween disco. Children were independently constructing sentences, using some very good adjectives and beginning to put in connectives to extend their sentences. It sounds like everyone had a very fun and spooky Halloween.

In Maths last week we were learning how to add numbers beyond 20. Children were initially using number lines and have now moved on to using 100 squares. They are trying very hard to remember to count the “jumps” that they make while going up the number line/ 100 square. This week we are using this skill for subtraction. We are trying hard to remember that when we subtract we go back down the number line/100 square.

In our topic Emergency Services, the children have been learning about firefighters and fire engines. We are hoping for a visit from our local fire station shortly. We have also been learning about fire safety and what to do in the event of a fire- “STOP, DROP, ROLL” “GET OUT, STAY OUT” “DIAL 999”

Homework was sent home yesterday. Please go ahead with the activities and record anything in their share it jotters. Their words for the Scottish song will come home today.

Primary 2 and 3 have started practising for the Nativity. Children have begun to learn the songs and parts in the Nativity will be handed out soon.

Primary 4 1.11.18

Hello everyone

Primary 4 have had an extremely busy but very fun week! On Monday we were visited by some very important people – two vikings! They wore traditional Viking clothes and spoke to us in a language Vikings use called Norse. The children were able to learn some new words and were even beginning to understand instructions in Norse! The Vikings taught us all about special traditions, burials, clothes, food, weapons and even dancing! What a fantastic learning experience! Thank you Vikings 🙂

On Wednesday we attended a sports event at Craigswood Sports Centre with other Primary 4 children from our cluster. The children competed in the handball festival with great enthusiasm showing great skill and sportsmanship. Thank you to Mrs Ferguson for working with the children to improve their skills. Well done Primary 4!

This week in writing the children wrote a spooky story all about Halloween. They worked very hard to focus on our 3 core targets whilst writing – using full stops and capital letters, spelling all common words correctly and using a variety of connectives. We will finish these stories next week and we cannot wait to read the finished articles!

On Monday your child received a reading book home and a new homework sheet inside their spelling jotter. Each week your child will have pages to read in their new book. They will have a full week to read these pages (from Monday to the following Monday). Spelling homework will continue as before and maths homework will be given each week. This may be in the form of a worksheet but also could be a practical activity/Studyladder game. Thank you for all your support with homework.

Last Thursday’s Halloween disco was a huge success! It was terrific seeing all the children dressed up and having a fantastic time! Thank you to the PSA for organising such a well planned and fun event! And well done too to Zara and Sophie for winning the costume competition!

Primary 2 loved the Halloween Party! All the costumes were fantastic!

Homework is due on Thursday, please remember to sign off any homework activities which were completed. We will share our work with our peers on Thursday morning. Remember to keep doing reading regularly.

We are learning to add mentally in maths this week. We are hoping to use the counting on strategy to help us add big numbers.

In writing we will be writing a story about our Halloween activities- treat or treat, sweeties, parties etc. We are hoping to use a variety of adjectives to help make our stories come to life.

We are kicking off our new topic with learning about Firefighters. We have been investigating the purpose of the firefighters uniform and helmet. Children have also been looking at and describing fire engines. We are hoping for a visit from our local firefighters soon.

Primary 7 are selling Poppies for Remembrance Day. They would appreciate a donation of £1.

Hello everyone

Our Harvest assembly rehearsals are now in full swing! If your child has a speaking part in our assembly then their lines are in homework diaries for them to practise. Please encourage your child to learn their words at home. Our assembly will be performed in front of the school only. However we will have an assembly later in the year that parents can attend.

We started to look at play scripts this week in class. The children explored the features of play scripts and how they differ from story books or non-fiction texts. They then worked in a group to read the part of a character in a play. We will be exploring different kinds of play scripts in class further and will soon be performing in front of the class!

In French we have been revising various greetings and also learning some new ways to say hello and goodbye to others including “See you tomorrow” and “see you soon”. Please ask us about these at home 🙂 We have made our own puppets in class using lolly pop sticks and we will use these to help us to greet others.

Primary 2 11.9.18

Primary 2 have been learning about what home life was like in the past. We have compared household items that were used many years ago and what we use now. The children decided that life is much easier! Keep speaking to your children about many significant changes in life style to help them have a better understanding.

In Numeracy we have been writing and recognising numbers up to 100. Children have been using 100 squares, SEAL games and teacher led activities to become more familiar with these numbers and where they fall in the number line. In Maths we were naming a number of 2D shapes and this week we are going to be learning all about their properties.

We did some fantastic pieces of character writing last week about a Teddy Bear. The children tried to use a variety of adjectives to describe their bear which was found in an old fashioned Toy Store. This week we are going to describe the setting for our story and continue our focus on sentence structure and the use of adjectives.

We hope you are enjoying our new ORT books and managing to do lots of reading at home. Our phonic sounds this week are: ph and wh.

Homework is due on Thursday please (not reading books). We will allocate some time in class for the children to share their homework activities with a friend. New homework will be issued after the September break. We hope the new style of homework in P2 is working for you all.

Primary 5 2.9.18

Primary 5 have had another busy week.

We have been working on our Great Britain topic and have completed a challenge to research key facts about Great Britain in groups. Each group have prepared a poster about 1 country and will be teaching these facts to their class next week.

In Maths we have continued to work on angles. This week we have also started to look at compass points and calculate the distance between each point in degrees. We have also been learning how to use the Probots to make pathways round the classroom.

In reading and writing we have been looking at the way an author uses description to create a setting and and we wrote a description of our own.

The children will bring their first homework home today. Please check their diary for details and return all completed homework by Thursday 13th September. Dates for PE are also in diaries.

Primary 2 4.9.19

Welcome to Primary 2! We hope all the boys and girls are beginning to settle into their new classrooms. It was lovely to meet some of you at the meet the teacher last Wednesday. We will update the blog weekly with information about P2.

Yesterday we sent home our first piece of homework. The children are being given two weeks to complete the activities in their Share It Jotter. Reading needs to be completed regularly and we will change these books on a Monday (children must bring in current reading book before they are issued with a new one). After two weeks the children will be encouraged to share their homework activities with the class.

Our new topic is Grandparents. We are going to be learning about all of the activities, toys, food, music, dance, dress and technology from the 1950s-70s. Please encourage your children to speak to elderly family members or friends to get an insight about what life was like and how it has changed.

We are learning forward and backward number sequences up to 100 in Numeracy. The children are using 100 squares to help them with this and we are using songs to help remember all of our numbers, especially before and after numbers. We are also going to be learning the proporties of 2D shapes.

During reading the children will be completing reading tasks linked to their ORT reading book and will be encouraged to read aloud in class and involve themselves in the group discussions. Our main focus in writing this term is visualisation and understanding how to construct a sentence correctly. We will also be looking into the importance of adjectives and simple connectives during writing lessons.

Specialists: Both classes are receiving Art from Mrs Fox and Music from Mr Shanks. P.E will be taught by class teachers this term.

Primary 2 are allowed to bring in one small toy to play with during Free Time Friday, however we must stress that the children are responsible for looking after their own toy. If your child does not have a toy with them then they may choose a toy/game from the classroom to play with.

Reminder: Could all children please bring in a water bottle to have in the class. This is often drank during milk and story time or after P.E, break and lunch.

Primary 7 20.4.18

Hello everyone!

In P7 this week we have been very busy organising our last term in Primary School.
Our Leavers hoodies have arrived and they look great! We also have started planning our Leavers Assembly and we have been allocated parts. We can’t wait to perform it.

In indoor PE we are learning how to play badminton, it is really fun! Mrs Ferguson teaches us on a Wednesday every week.

In writing we are focused on mystery and suspense paragraphs. This week we wrote a paragraph about a haunted house and now they are on the wall with a matching picture.

In Science we have a DCHS transition passport and we have activities to complete to get us ready for high school science.

We have self, peer and the teacher has assessed our WWII projects and they are fantastic! Miss Clark & Mrs Macaulay are really happy with our work! 🙂
