Sports Day – Carmondean Primary School Blog

Primary 2 wb 14th June

Primary 2 had a super week last week! We all loved taking part in our Sports Day!! Well done to the winning house and a huge well done to all the Primary 2 children who took part. We had lots of fun!

We are still learning about hot countries. Last week were learning about the Rainforest and this week we a focusing on the African Plains. We can’t wait to learn about all the wild animals that live in Africa.

In maths we have been revising addition and subtraction. This week we are going to be practising our times tables and dividing. We have also been enjoying using the beebots to learn about direction.

We are still completing our reading regularly in class and today the children will come home with new reading books. Please continue to read the book with your child. We have also issued our last piece of P2 homework- this has been uploaded on Seesaw.

Its been another hot week and we hope it continues! We are trying to get outside as much as we can to enjoy this beautiful weather. We have been using the chalks to practise our drawing and spelling skills, using the large hundred square outside and continuing our P.E sessions outside.

Today Primary 2 are taking part in a whole school litter pick. We have extra litter pickers and hoops, and Primary 2 have been given the job of collecting litter from the outer playground and field. We hope you can see a real improvement when you come to collect the children.

Please remember to bring a water bottle to school. Wear P.E clothes on P.E days.

Primary 6 Friday 11th June

Good morning everyone, Primary 6 have had another busy week.

In topic this week we have been learning about the Sinking of the Titanic. We have watched videos and read information on the timeline and have also studied all the faults which caused the ship to sink so quickly. Our favourite part was watching interviews with some of the survivors who shared their expericences.

We had great fun at Sports day on Wednesday, we took part in a variety of potted sports, relays and beat the goalie.

In maths we have been learning about square numbers and function machines. We really enjoyed creating our own function machines to challenge our friends.

We have learned that the main characters in our novel Kaspar Prince of Cats have boarded the Titanic. We can’t wait to read on to find out what happens to them.

Next week we will be beginning to present our class talks on our Titanic characters. Can you please check that your child is ready for their presentation.

Primary 5: 10.06.2021

Hello,

It has been a busy week in Primary Five!

We had lots of fun at our annual Sports Day on Thursday morning! It was a little different than normal but we had lots of fun with all the fun activities set up by Mrs Ferguson and Miss Malloy! There were lots of fun potted sports to start; javelin throwing contests, rugby tosses, tennis ball serves and relay running. We then moved on to Beat the Goalie which was lots of fun and a lot trickier than it looked! Last up there was lots of fun running and relay races; there was some close finishes!Well done to every Primary 5 member who took part, tried their hardest, showed great sportsmanship and had fun!

The overall points were so close and there was less than 20 points in it! These are the rankings for the Primary 5 Sports Day but we will have to wait until all the year groups scores are added together!

This week in Writing, the class wrote superb senses poems inspired by a 13^th century battlefield. The children used their imagination to transport themselves onto the battle field at Stirling Bridge, Falkirk or Bannockburn and tried to envisage what they might see, smell, hear, taste and touch. They came up with lots of gory words to create some really gruesome descriptions. The children were very creative coming up with different bodily fluids that you might find on a battlefield . They then organised their ideas into five different stanzas each focussing on a different body sense. The finished poems were fantastic and we had fun sharing them with the class.

In Maths, both classes were working on measuring weight. Primary 5a faced the tricky task of organising 10kilograms worth of (imaginary) fruit for the new (imaginary) Carmondean Fruit Tuck Shop. This involved having to convert weights between grams and kilograms as well as using fractions and decimals.

In Numeracy, both classes have been working hard on decimals. They have been learning how to convert between fractions and decimals, and this week took on the challenge of adding decimals. Both classes have made excellent progress on this!

In Reading, we have reached the final chapter of our non-fiction text for The Scottish Wars of Independence. The classes were amazed that they had managed to read the whole book so thoroughly alongside making their own books! This weeks chapter focussed on the Scottish victory at the Battle of Bannockburn and the Declaration of Arbroath.

During Health, we have been looking at the growth of a foetus during pregnancy. Both classes loved looking at the comparison charts and finding out what fruit a foetus compares to each week. We had lots of excellent discussions about what babies can see/hear/do inside the mothers womb!

Primary 2 – 07.06.21

Good morning everyone,

We had a busy week in P2 last week and have been working very hard. We made the most of the nice weather and enjoyed our PE outside where we have been learning cricket skills. Our P2 sports day is on Thursday 10 June so please come to school wearing PE clothes and your house colours if possible. We can provide coloured bibs if you do not have anything so please do not buy anything new. Unfortunately parents/carers are not able to attend but we will make sure we take lots of photos and upload these to SeeSaw.

We have looked at Deserts as part of our social studies and have been researching Desert animals and plants. We are going to progress on to looking at other hot countries such as Australia.

In numeracy we are revising what we have learnt over the course of the year. This week we are focusing on addition and subtraction.

In Phonics we are looking at the ss/ll phonemes this week.

Last week we had great fun making up our own similies in Literacy. This week we are progressing on to explore metaphors.

Primary 6 4.6.21

Primary 6 have continued to work on our Titanic Project this week. We have started learning the key facts about the sinking. We have explored the mistakes which were made and how they led to the sinking of the ship. We have continued to read our novel Kaspar Prince of Cats and this week the family have arrived on the Titanic.

In maths we have been solving problems related to multiples and factors, we have also started learning how to calculate the area of a rectangle.

In writing we have started learning about the targets related to the recount genre.

Next week we have sports day on Wednesday morning and it would be great to see as many people as possible coming to school dressed in their house colours.

Our eco committee have working hard on ways to reduce waste in school. We are trying a new initiative called waste free Wednesdays and are encouraging our children to bring snacks and lunches which are not stored in single use plastic. We would be grateful of your support in encouraging your child to think of alternative ways to store snacks and lunches on that day.

Primary 4 4.6.21

Hello everyone!

It has been a very fun week in Primary 4.

We have been enjoying watching our class caterpillars continue to grow. They are getting really big now! We looked at photos that we took of them on Day 1 and Day 5 and the differences were incredible! We are looking forward to watching them transform again in the next week or so.

We have been continuing to read Charlotte’s Web in class. The children are really enjoying the novel and Mr Woodward and I are so pleased that so many children are volunteering to read aloud in front of the class. This week we learned about a miracle that happened on the farm. The children became news reporters, writing amazing reports about the miracle on Zuckerman’s Farm. Some of our roving reporters even included interviews with a main character in their newspaper report – amazing job Primary 4!

This week we drew our art topic on colours to a close by creating amazing insect art work. Last week each child sketched either a ladybird, a spider or a worm in pencil and then went over their lines in black pen. This week the children used poster paint to paint their insects lots of different colours. The children were only given the primary colours, white and black and they still managed to create the most amazing, multi-coloured insects through using their knowledge of primary, secondary and tertiary colours. Well done Primary 4!!

Our Primary 4 Sports Day took place yesterday. A huge thank you to Mrs Ferguson. Mrs Coulter and Miss Malloy who organised and ran the whole event which was a huge success! Thank you also to the Primary 7s who planned all of the events that the children took part in yesterday. All the children had a fantastic time. A special well done to SUTHERLAND who were the winning house (Miss Clark was especially happy as she is in Sutherland too!) All the points from each stage’s Sports Day will be added together and a final house winner will be revealed soon!

Homework is due in next Friday 11th June. This will be our last piece of homework in Primary 4. Reading books should also be returned to school by this date. Thank you for all the help and support you provide the children with, it is greatly appreciated it.

As the weather is becoming warmer we would like to go outdoors more with the children. Please ensure your child is wearing sun cream to school on hot, sunny days. We cannot apply this in school. Thank you.

Primary 4 28.5.21

We have some new friends in Primary 4 this week to go along with our mini-beasts topic. Our happy little caterpillars have finally arrived and have been wiggling around and have settled in well to Primary 4. They are hungry wee caterpillars and we’re hopeful that in no time at all we’ll see them grow and grow on the way to becoming beautiful butterflies.

Staying with topic we have been developing our art skills this week using pencil sketching to draw some amazing and detailed mini beast artwork. The pupils had the choice of ladybug, spider or worm and the pupils really showed their enthusiasm and their eye for detail.

We have been continuing our recount writing topic and used A Bug’s Life to retell a very dramatic scene with the bugs trying to escape a hungry bird. The pupils were able to retell the scene using great description and story-telling ability. In reading we’ve been making great progress through Charlotte’s Web and the pupils seem to be very enthusiastic about the story. We’ve had some great ideas about how the story will end and some good discussions about the lovely relationship between Wilbur and Charlotte.

Pupils have been strutting their stuff this week in PE with the flash-mob rehearsals in full swing. The smiles on faces and enthusiasm in doing the moves has been amazing to see and we hope they’ll have been cha-cha-cha-ing around the house all week!

P2 Update 17.5.21

Hello Everyone,

Last week in Primary 2 the children really enjoyed learning all about Arctic foxes as part of our Hot/ Cold Countries topic. They created some lovely artwork using different materials to make their own Arctic foxes and produced very detailed factual reports to share their knowledge.

This week we will focus on polar bears and they will continue to work on non-fiction skills in Writing to create a report sharing the facts they have learned. The children’s targets are to use subheadings, include an appropriate title and write in present tense along with all the core targets we look for in every piece of writing e.g. capital letters and full stops, connectives etc.

This week in Maths, we are beginning to learn about fractions including halving numbers and moving on to halving and quartering shapes.

In PE, the children have started learning about cricket and we are focussing on throwing and catching skills as well as target practise. We will also be practising Sports Day activities with the aim of completing a class Sports Day closer to the end of term.

Please remember that Monday 24th May is a holiday.

Primary 3 18th June 2020

How did we all like the Great Science Share yesterday? There was lots of amazing things to learn and even more impressive was all of the children from all over the country and the work and questions they have put into exploring Science over the last few months. If you submitted a question or work, or even applied for your badges, let us know about it!

It was lovely, again to speak with so many of you yesterday. We really do look forward to hearing from you and it is the best part of the week!

Remember to continue your Sports Day activities! We will be watching as the points come rolling in for the teams. It is lovely seeing the whole school working on the same thing across all of the classes. Let us know what you think of it all and don’t forget to send in pics. Reading: For today’s reading we would like you to pick 1 book from the books you added to your reading passport. We would then like you try create your own dictionary based off of the interesting, descriptive or difficult words that you find in your story as you read. You can create your own dictionary however you want, you can do it on paper, on a computer, on a tablet, and it’s entirely up to you! Make sure to make it bright and colourful and make sure that you leave space to keep adding to it as you read other books. It should be something to be added to whenever you read books and find words that you would like to add to your dictionary. Try to make sure you get a front cover and a few words added and remember dictionaries are in alphabetical order!

Primary 5 16.06.09

Primary 5 have had a fantastic week. On Thursday we performed our show Rockbottom Rocks. We were so proud of the children; they sang, danced and acted so well and had great fun doing it. A big thank you to all parents and families who came to see us, having such a good audience made the performance special to us.

This week we have continued to work on our topic Charlie and the Chocolate factory. We wrote stories about a visit to Loompa Land to bring the Oompa Loompas back to the factory. Everyone has worked hard and really enjoyed writing these stories.

In maths we completed our weight topic with a problem solving activity afternoon. We weighed out ingredients to make chocolate crispies, worked on studyladder and worked on problem solving activities.

We have been thinking about sports day next week and in PE we identified the fastest runners for each house for the house relay. We look forward to seeing you next Thursday morning. Remember to wear house colours if possible.

Primary 4 14.6.19

Hello everyone

It has been a hectic but enormously fun week in Primary 4! Yesterday we performed our show “Rock Bottom” to friends and family and the children did an absolutely fantastic job! Every single child worked so hard to make this show such a success and they shone yesterday during both performances. Miss Donaldson and I were extremely proud teachers and would like to thank the children for their dedication to this show. We would also like to thank all the parents and carers for supporting the children with learning lines, songs, dances and for providing costumes. We really appreciate all of your help.

In numeracy this week we began learning about time. We have been exploring analogue clocks and revising o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. We also made our own analogue clocks which we will use to play games with a partner to test our knowledge. Next week we will link our knowledge of time to the digital clock and explore time in some five minute intervals. Please encourage your child to look at clocks to tell the time at home.

Also in numeracy the children finished their work on fractions by completing a “Pizza Party Challenge”. Each child worked with a partner to create their own pizza collage. The catch? The children had to interpret a series of fractions to work out how many slices should have each ingredient. The children were able to work out that 4/6 of the pizza meant 8 slices must have mushrooms and that 1/4 meant that 3 slices of the pizza should have pepperoni. The children then presented their finished pizza creations to the class. Watching the presentations made us all feel very hungry!

This week the children began to create their own booklets about their time in Primary 4. They will write and illustrate their achievements, favourite subjects, things they have learned and their hopes for Primary 5. You will be able to read your child’s completed booklet and explore the rest of their Primary 4 work during our Open Morning which will take place next Friday 21st June from 9:15-10:15. A letter will be sent home with more details about this shortly.

Calum from “Cool Creatures” will be visiting Primary 4 next Tuesday afternoon to round off our mini beast topic. He will be bringing a variety of mini beasts and other animals for the children to look at and possibly interact with if they would like. We would like to thank the PSA for funding this visit, it is much appreciated and we know the children are going to love it!

Sports day next Thursday (9:30 start on the field). Children will be competing in their houses and if they could wear their house colour that would be helpful. If this is not possible then coloured bibs will be provided.

Primary 3 News 18.6.18

Thank you to all of you for coming to see us on Friday, last week. The children were very excited to show off their work and share their dream jobs with you.

We have a busy week ahead of us starting with our Beach Trip tomorrow. Please can you make sure the children have applied sun cream before they get dressed in the morning. They can then wear their swimming things under their shorts along with plenty of layers such as a t shirt, fleece/jumper and a waterproof jacket. They must also bring footwear for paddling in such as flip flops or croc style shoes as well as a spare plastic bag containing extra pants, socks, t shirt and shorts or trousers. They must also bring a towel, snack, water bottle and packed lunch unless provided by the school and a bucket and spade all labelled with names.

On Wednesday we will be having our annual Sports Day. Children will need to bring in their PE kits with their house colour T shirt. If they do not have that particular colour then a bib will be provided. Again, please ensure your child has a water bottle.

Reading and phonics as normal although this will be our last week of homework.

Primary 2/3 14.6.18

We had a very successful walk up Dechmont. We dressed as pirates and decided that it was a perfect lookout point. We could see for miles!

We have been busy bees this week getting ready for our open morning tomorrow. We have been learning about the world of work and talking about jobs that the children would like to do when they grow up. We look forward to showing you our work tomorrow.

We have an exciting week next week, with the Beach trip on Tuesday and Sports day on Wednesday afternoon. Primary 2 and Primary 3 have been given their residential letters for next year so please return these with the deposit as soon as possible.

Primary 1 13.6.18

Primary 1 did an excellent job in their assembly about farming yesterday morning. Thank you to everyone who helped by practising lines at home. The children enjoyed sharing their learning with you all.
Yesterday we made butter as a class. We learnt about how butter is churned both now and in the past and made our own by shaking double cream in a jar. It was great fun and the butter tasted great on crackers!

This coming Friday is our open morning. Parents are invited to visit the classes to see our learning about the world of work. Today we will be talking about the jobs we know about already and which jobs we would like to have in the future. We will also be completing a critical skills challenge about examples of jobs found in magazines and newspapers. These posters will be on display on Friday morning. During the Friday morning session the children will be creating posters about a job someone in their family does. Please talk to your child about a job they could write about before then. They are allowed to bring in pens for creating the poster.

The beach trip is next Tuesday (19th June). Please ensure you have returned the relevant form and money for this.
Sports Day is scheduled for next Wednesday afternoon. Children can bring a T-shirt in house colours to wear (Dear Park- blue, Raeburn- green, Sutherland- yellow, Waverley- red). There are also bibs in school in each colour if your child needs one.

Primary 6 23.06.17

Hello everyone

A big thank you to all of the parents and carers who attended our Carmondean open morning this morning where we shared our learning about the ERASMUS+ country of Slovakia. The children loved sharing their knowledge with you and showing you how using their own devices in the classroom can be extremely beneficial.

This week has been a busy week at Carmondean. On Wednesday all of the children took part in sports day. They showed team work, sportsmanship and skill throughout. Well done to the winning house – Waverley!
Yesterday most P6’s met their future P1 buddies for the first time. This was an exciting afternoon wherein children got a chance to play with their buddy and meet their buddies’ parents. Both Mrs Kelly and I were so impressed with the way in which all of the children conducted themselves. They showed caring and mature attitudes and we are sure that they will be excellent buddies.

Next week will be an exciting week too! The children will find out who will be their new teachers next year. They will also watch the annual school talent show and attend both the P7 and nursery leavers assemblies.

This will be our last blog post of the session. Mrs Kelly, Mrs Wylie and I would like to thank you all for your support this session. It has been a great year in P6 and we wish all the children every success in Primary 7 and beyond!

Primary 4 week beginning 12.6.17

Wow! What a fantastic week we have had in Primary 4. We were so pleased with how well our show went, we had 2 very successful performances. We were very happy to see so many people turn up to watch the show. We would like to extend a massive thank you to all the parents/carers who turned up and helped their child to learn lines, songs or dances. We (the teachers) thought that the children were amazing! The acting was brilliant, the dancing was superb and the singing was beautiful.

We hope that having now experienced school shows first hand and be seeing what is involved in them, we will have many more children who feel confident enough to put themselves forward for roles. We know this stage are very talented in dancing, acting and singing so we are hoping to see lots more of our stars centre stage next year!

This week will also be our organised event which is Day for change. This will happen on Friday and the children are invited to school to take part in opposite day. This means that they can come dressed as teachers, in pj, in wet weather gear (if it is sunny) etc. We will also be collecting any change you have lying around throughout the week and will use the money collected from the whole school to spell out day for change in the hall.

You may have noticed that new homework tasks have been issued. We would like you to use the rest of term and the longer evenings to make the most of the experiences (rather than written tasks). Spelling tests will still be taking place however we have handed over ownership to the children of how they would like to practice spelling their words. Please also be aware that we will be collecting in reading books shortly so if you see any please send them in.
