Primary 3 15 5 20

Bonjour et happy vendredi Primary 3! The weather has been lovely to finish the week off and I hope that for your long weekend the weather continues to stay bright and beautiful and you can all get out in your gardens or take a safe and socially distant walk around some of your favourite walking spots!

Remember that Monday is a holiday so no work will be posted and we don’t expect you to do anything work related at all, enjoy the extra day and we will look forward to hearing all about your long weekend next week when we get back!

If the weather does turn bad, or if you find yourself with some extra time on your hands and you’re feeling creative, why not try this painting and drawing activity. First take a paper and a paintbrush and a paint colour of your choice. Then just let your brush wander over the paper and for even more randomness don’t look at the paper when you are putting paint on it. Then use the random patterns you’ve made to create a picture using coloured pens/ pencils/ crayons/ different paints? The great thing is this will be different every time! Here is a few examples courtesy of Art Angel:

Mental Maths today are as follows, remember to time yourselves to see if you can beat your time taken to complete! Answers will be posted in Teams Files later on in the day.

Your new challenge this week is based on the ‘transport’ aspect of technology you chose to learn about. We will be beginning with learning about the Steam Engine and James Watt’s part in improving this.  Link to Pdf is below, and has been uploaded to Teams files. Please let us know if there are any problems accessing this.

Have a lovely long weekend everyone.

Thank you for your continued hard work and support,

Happy Wednesday Primary 3, we hope you have been having a great week so far, we have loved seeing all of your great work and the activities you have been up to. We have had pictures, paintings, videos, even a short clip of Carson doing a backflip! We are loving your creativity and it is so impressive to see how much you are doing with your time away from doing work, well done everyone!

Today we are having our check-in at 10am, we hope to speak to you all as it has become the highlight of our week getting to chat to you all and find out what you’ve been up to!

Today we have a challenge to set you all in light of not having the Olympics and Paralympics this year. The challenge is to keep active however you can and to keep a record of your activities on this website: https://www.getset.co.uk/travel-tokyo. You will need to find your school and then record what you’ve done and how long you did it for and there are possible prizes up for grabs!

Your maths today is all about looking at the area of a shape. The area is the space inside a shape. So imagine that all shapes are made up of little squares, to find the area you count all the squares. When writing your answers for the area of a shape you write it as cm² – the small 2 means ‘squared’. There will be shapes in future activities that don’t have squares drawn on and then you need to use multiplication, however we will worry about that when we get there! I will also put up an area instructional video in Teams to help you! Choose your own challenge level:

Mild

Spicy

Hot

Primary 3 Friday 8th May 2020

Good morning Primary 3.

Today is a special day indeed. Does anyone know why?

No, not just because it is Free Time Friday day, it’s because it is VE Day!

VE stands for Victory in Europe and this day is celebrated and remembered. On 8 May 1945, Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio at 3pm that the war in Europe had come to an end, following Germany’s surrender the day before. It is important to remember that the war was sill being fought on this day in other areas of the world and lots of the soldiers were still being held as prisoners of war elsewhere as well. To mark VE Day, there is a 1 minute silence at 11am. Lots of online things are happening to celebreate VE Day today. Let us know if you do anything with your family.

If you want to find out more about VE Day have a look here on Newsround: https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/48201749

Your Mental Maths for today is below. You can choose which one you wish to complete. I will post answers at the end of today for you to check. Remember to try to beat your time taken to complete them accurately from last week.

Mrs Fox has given us some ideas to continue your Art in the link below. Since the weather has been so nice, why not try some of the outdoor activities and let us know how you get on!

Indoor and Outdoor Activity Sheet

This week our Topic Challenge is about living in Space. Tim Peake was the first official British astronaut to walk in space in 2016 and so part of your challenge is to find out all about him. The main part of your challenge is to design your own livable space habitat. Remember our needs and wants challenge? Think about what you would need to survive and how you might get it/ make it/ grow it in space. Design your space habitat and then if you have time and you have asked permission you could try building a model. The challenge will also be posted in the Interdisciplinary folder in Teams.

Here are some links to websites that might help you with some ideas:

Primary 3 Wednesday 6th May 2020

Good morning Primary 3 and welcome back! Please remember there is a class check-in at 1:30pm for anyone who is available to join. Have a think in advance of something you have been proud of learning during the time the schools have been closed.

Well done to everyone who found out Hubble’s birthday! You were right, it was on the 24th April and he is 30 this year! We hope the challenge is going well if you have decided to complete it.

Please can we take this moment to reiterate that although there are lots of activities given each day, as well as Education City and our continued home learning grid, the expectation is not for every single task to be completed and handed in. We are providing the work, and should it fit in with your home/working life, that’s a bonus. However, it is up to you what you believe is manageable for your situation. We are all new to this and you should do what works for you.

The main thing we would love to see completed each day is the establishment of a routine, and to ensure everyone in your household is safe, happy and well. If that happens, the learning will naturally happen from there anyway. Thank you all for your continued efforts, we really do appreciate how difficult this situation could be.

Thank you,

Mr Woodward and Miss Smith.

If it fits with your day, the work that can be completed today is below:

Today we are looking at perimeter of 2D shapes. Perimeter is the length of all the sides of a shape added together. There will be an instructional video put up on Teams in the Numeracy/ Maths folders to explain perimeter as well as a Shape section on Education City with activities and learning videos.

Choose your own challenge level for completing the perimeter task:

Good morning boys and girls! Well, it is now May! Can anyone remember how to say “the first” in French? Let’s see who remembers and can tell us!

Today is Friday, so that means you have to make sure you get some free time today!  We have a special job for you today. Your special job is to make sure all of the adults at home have some free time to themselves today, because they have been working just as hard as you this week! Especially helping us with our class chats on Wednesday! Can you do that!?

Today we have a little Friday challenge to keep you busy next week. It is about the Hubble space telescope and we hope you enjoy learning about it. It was Hubble’s birthday last week. Can anyone find out what age Hubble is? There are a few links for you to investigate to help you with your research.

Link to Pdf and screenshot of challenge:

We will speak to you again on Wednesday, where we will have another class check-in online at 1:30pm. If you are free it would be lovely to welcome you and hear your news. Remember to join with microphones and videos off. We are really looking forward to it!

Bonjour primary 3! Aujourd’hui c’est Mercredi vingt neuf Avril, we’re nearly into May! We hope that your week has been interesting and productive so far and it has been so lovely chatting to you all and seeing examples of the work you’ve been doing. We couldn’t be more proud of how hard you’ve been working and how much enthusiasm you’ve shown! We will put the work you’ve been sending in the Class photos file in Teams for you to all have a look at. If you are able to, we will be doing a check-in on Teams today at 1:30 and we hope to chat to you all then. If you can’t make it today we will do another check in next Wednesday with a time still to be decided.

For your maths for today we are looking at 3D shapes and their properties. Try to do what you can of the work task and then watch this short video which explains some of the more difficult shape words that we haven’t yet covered in class to finish off filling in the table: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nLpD6bE4fE

For each reading book here is a writing task for you to complete, please remember capital letters and full stops, joined writing and correct spelling. Write at least half a page of A4 for your writing but please feel free to write more if you can.

The Frog Prince

This story is all about being a good friend. Your writing task is to write about a time you have been a good friend to someone. Describe where you were, who you were with, what happened and how you felt during what was happening.

Attack of the Buzzles

In Attack of the Buzzles they land on a strange alien planet. Write a story about you exploring a strange alien planet. What does it look like, are there aliens there and what do they look like and sound like? How does it feel to be on a strange planet? What do you do on the planet?

Attack of the Centipede

In the story Tiger is shrunk and has an adventure with a centipede. Your writing task is to pretend you have been shrunk and placed in your garden/ a local park. What creatures might you see and what do they look like when you are small? How do you feel as you explore the world around you and describe in detail how everything looks after you have been shrunk. What kind of an adventure might you have where you are in your story?

Eric’s Talking Ears

Eric is able to talk to animals at the zoo who then try and escape the zoo. Your writing task is to imagine you are one of the animals and you do end up escaping the zoo. What animal are you, describe yourself. Where do you go and what do you do when you escape the zoo? How did it feel to live in the zoo and how does it feel now that you are out of the zoo? What kind of adventures do you go on outside the zoo?

Clever Monkey

Clever Monkey is a story about a family going on an adventure together. Your writing task is to write a story about an adventure you are going to go on with a member of your family. Where would you go and who would you go with? What would you do on your adventure and make sure to use lots of descriptive words.

Here are your Number Talks for today – a solution to yesterday’s problem will be posted in files on Teams:

3 x 5                                                                       10 x 10

Good morning Primary 3, we hope you had a fantastic weekend and made the most of the beautiful weather as much as possible. It has been lovely to see some wee baby lambs in fields round about and it’s the perfect weather for the new life that Spring brings! Today, if you can, if you are doing the Joe Wicks, or any kind of PE today, try doing it out in your garden and make the most of the lovely weather!

Now that there are some beautiful blooms and flowers coming through, why not use your creative sides to draw or paint your favourite flower or a range of flowers and send us your artwork so we can share your amazing work.

Remember to make use of the learning grids that were posted last week on the blog for activities for the start of this term and there are lots of activities on Education City for you to work through as well.

For your reading today, please make sure to read the second half of your reading books, there will be activities to go along with your books throughout the week.

This week we have a new Rights Respecting Schools Article to focus on. Article 12, the right to have your views respected. Try a couple of the activities below and use the #RRSA, post it on twitter, or Rights Respecting Schools on Facebook.

Have a go at this problem solving the answer will be posted in tomorrow’s blog.

Primary 3 Friday 24th April 2020

How are you all Primary 3? Still keeping safe and well I hope! Happy Friday!

Every Friday, we will upload a challenge for our new technology topic (chosen by you). This will involve a tiny bit of research through reading or watching something and then an activity to go with the new information you have learned. Today’s challenge is a little introduction to technology.

We have seen lots of examples of you working through the activities on your learning grid which is great. Remember that Education City is also available to supplement Maths and Literacy too. Should you need a reminder of your password, please do not hesitate to message Mr Woodward and I. We will be happy to pass it on.

As you all are aware, we have our Rights Respecting Schools Article 24 as a focus for this week also. The theme with this is Health, water, food and the environment share using: #RRSA on Twitter, or share it on the RRSA Facebook community page.

West Lothian would also like to keep up to date with all of the amazing Health work we are doing, whether it be daily exercise, obstacle courses in the garden, baking and cooking or hand-washing to name a few. They would love to encourage you to share your work with them also following @WLHWBchamps on twitter and use the hashtag #WLHWBathome whenever you are doing anything HWB related.

Here is a little Friday Mental Maths. Time yourself to see how speedily and accurately you can solve the questions. You can choose which one you wish to do, or indeed, try both! Answers will be posted later today.

Also – don’t forget that today is a Friday, therefore, you have definitely earned your 30 minutes of free time today.

Have a great weekend,

Miss Smith and Mr Woodward.

Primary 3 Thursday 24th April 2020

Bonjour and good morning to you all!

Today’s Maths task is based on different number systems, focusing on the Roman number system. The Roman number system is slightly different to ours in that they used capital letters to represent their numbers. The letters are  I, V, X, L, C, D and M. See if you can use this to complete the worksheet today. Click on this link to be taken straight to the pdf Roman-numerals

or here is a screenshot of the sheet if you do not have software to download.

In the files and Literacy tab in teams, the new word boost screens have been uploaded. See whether your answers to the definitions task set in the assignments are correct!

We have also uploaded a little lesson video on multiplication with carrying numbers. If you would like more of these, please let us know. Equally, if you found these helpful, or otherwise let us know so we can learn from this going forward. If they were a success, we may look to doing this and uploading more for more curriculum areas. Check out yesterday’s blog post and also your class Maths file on Teams for the videos.

Primary 3 Wednesday 22nd April 2020

Good morning Primary Three, I hope we are all managing to access all of the resources so far and are having fun trying out the music resource from Monday’s blog post. No-one has said they had any problems with the multiplication in Maths involving carrying, but please let us know if you need a little refresher on this and we will be happy to post a little reminder.

Just a quick reminder of login details for the reading resource:

An assignment has gone live for this week’s word boost words. If you have access to Teams, watch and listen to the story then see if you can write the definitions of the word boost words. The pdf of the power point we use on a Thursday will go up tomorrow with the answers!

Just for information, today also marks the 50th anniversary of World Earth Day.

Go to https://www.earthday.org/earth-day-live/ Have a look at the Earth Day Live Global Programme on this page to see if anything takes your fancy throughout the day! There are speakers, performances, meditation and street art, with everyone taking part, fighting to stop climate change.

Some shape based maths for you to try today:

Writing: Our topic this term is technology. Can you write a short story about what it might be like to be a robot being switched on for the first time? (think C3PO in The Phantom Menace). What would you see, who would you see, what would you feel and think? What would you do in your first day as a robot? What type of robot are you, could you describe yourself? How would you describe the world around you?

During Number Talks and numeracy we have started to look at multiplying with carrying and so here is a short video explaining carrying with a simple sum. It is the first time we’ve tried to record like this so hopefully it’ll work!

Primary 3 Tuesday 21st April 2020

It was lovely to hear from so many of you yesterday, and great to see how keen you all are to get back to work!

Each week we are going to make a Rights Respecting Schools Article focus for you to ponder or do an activity about. Anything you do, please keep or send on, because as you all know, we are going for our reaccreditation of our Gold Rights Respecting Schools Award. You can also post your work with the hashtag #RRSA on Twitter, or share it on the RRSA facebook community page.

This week, we would like you to focus on Article 24. It seems very fitting

In case you can’t make this out activities include:

  • Draw or list people who can help us stay healthy and safe. Explain their job.
  • Make a list with words or pictures of as many kinds of exercise you can think of.
  • Set up an obstacle course and challenge someone in your house to have a go.
  • Read Coronavirus: A Book for Children and talk about what you are doing as a family to keep healthy during this time.

Spelling words for this week are as follows:
Here is the links to the documents. You can also access these in the files section of Teams.

Blue Spelling ie Week beg 20th April

Spelling Words Week Beginning Monday 20th April

Yellow Spelling o_e week beg 20th April

Maths for today is multiplication 2 digits by 1 digit. However – be careful as it involves numbers over 10. You must remember to carry. We looked at this in the week before schools were closed, therefore, if it is too difficult, please let us know. We can upload a video explaining how we do these types of sums to refresh us! Good luck!

If you can access Teams your Word Boost story for this week will be posted in Files -> Literacy -> Word Boost.

Primary 3, Monday 20.4.20

Good Morning Primary 3. Welcome back and we hope you have been having a restful couple of weeks on your Easter break. I’m wondering how many of you still have any of your chocolate eggs left!?

As much as we would love to be welcoming you back in person, we will continue to use our online classroom (the Blog and Teams) until we are told we can return to school, so it is going to be an interesting term with the topic you have chosen, “Technology in; sports, space, transport, programming and robotics.”

Reminder:

Primary 3, the majority of your work for the next 6 weeks or so will be in the form of another grid which we have attached at the end of this post. Please work through this at your own pace and preference. We may highlight and refer to some parts of this week to week that we think would be good for you to complete. Again, we will not be expecting all of your completed work to be sent to us, however if you wish to share what you have done with the rest of the class and ourselves, we are more than happy to receive copies or photos or even just a little blurb about how you are getting on. We will continue to add daily activities too, such as Maths, Reading, Spelling, Number Talks and Word Boost.

We will continue to dabble with ‘Teams’, so if you have access or have been using this before the holidays, keep your eyes peeled for new assignments, quizzes and resources on there. The main work and resources needed, however, will be duplicated on the Blog for those who do not have access to Teams.

Your first task for today to ease us back in nicely is a quick check-in. Update us on how you are feeling, ask the class a question to get a discussion started or simply share with us what you have been up to over the holidays. Do this via the posts on Teams, or even in the comments section of this Blog Post. Either way, we would love to hear from you!

Here is the link to the bulk of the activities for the next few weeks.

Learning Grid T4

(Screenshots below – Please let us know if you have problems with access to these.)

We are going to be looking at ICT and music through the use of Bandlab this term. It gives you the opportunity to create songs in a similar way to garageband which some of you may be familiar with.

Reading Books:

Group 6 (Mr Woodward’s class) – The Frog Prince

Group 7 (Miss Smith’s Blue Group) – Attack of the Buzzles

Group 8 (Mr Woodward’s class) – Attack of the Centipede

Group 10 (Miss Smith’s Red Group) – Eric’s Talking Ears

Group 11 (Mr Woodward’s Class and Miss Smiths Yellow Group)– Clever Monkey

Before you read your books – look at the front cover of your books and write at least 5 sentences predicting what will happen in your books. There should be a beginning, a problem, how the problem is fixed, and an ending. Think about characters and setting for your beginning and use the cover and the title to try and figure out what the problem in the story might be?

Band Lab

Username/ email: p3_carmondean@outlook.com

Password: p32020carmondean

Go to bandlab.com.

Click on log in and enter the email address and password.

Once logged in click on the red button in the top right corner that says +create.

It will give you a few options, click on the option that says ‘browse loops’.

Then choose a type of music and it will give you a variety of loop tracks to add to your song.

Click and drag the tracks into your song. When you want to add new tracks add them underneath tracks you already have.

Have a play around with different tracks/ genres and instruments.

Change the name of the track by clicking on ‘new project’ at the top of the page and give your song a name so you can remember it.

When you are done, click save and it will save your work.

Next time you log in click on the profile button (it looks like the shadow of a head in the top right corner) and you can find your project to keep working.

Remember that this profile is for everyone to use so please make sure you only create 1 song at a time and only save songs you are happy with.

Here are your Number Talks for today

Remember the different multiplication strategies for multiplication we have looked at: repeated addition e.g. 4×25=25+25+25+25.  Or by removing the zeroes and adding them back in e.g. 30x20 = 3 x 2 = 600. Or splitting the numbers up e.g. 36×20=30×20 + 6×20.

2 x 25                           6 x 20

4 x 25                           30 x 20

6 x 25                           36 x 20

8 x 25                           36 x 19

Mr Woodward and Miss Smith

Primary 3 3/4/20

Bonjour et bon vendredi! We hope you have all had a fantastic week and are looking forward to having two weeks off for your Easter Break.

Today we would have been going to the church and learning all about the Easter story and how important Easter is to Christianity. P3W would like to entertain you by giving you our takes on the Easter story. Each story was retold and created by the pupils in their groups and their mission was to get the story told in under one minute. This proved to be very difficult as there was a lot to fit in. So here are different versions of the Easter story in under 2 minutes!

You could also try some of these Easter crafts if you have time over the holidays:

Easter Chick hand puppets

https://kidscraftroom.com/handprint-chick-puppets/

An Easter Bunny face mask

https://kidscraftroom.com/easy-cute-bunny-nose-masks/?utm_medium=social&utm_source=pinterest&utm_campaign=tailwind_tribes&utm_content=tribes&utm_term=306974416_8880410_154982

Or find a stone and decorate

Some easier art ideas from Art Angel that you can do as long as you have a paper and pencil/pen:

‘Creating something from nothing. Start by staining your paper, you can use ink or coffee/tea. Once it’s dry start to use any medium to draw into the stains on the paper. Get ideas from the shapes and colours in front of you.’

Try writing a story either on a computer or in your jotters/ on a piece of paper. As an idea for your story: You wake up on Easter to discover that you have become the Easter bunny. What would your day be like as an Easter bunny? Describe your experience and what you do. Try to include a beginning paragraph describing the characters and setting, middle paragraphs describing your problem and some action that happens, and an ending describing how you overcome your problem.

And here is some non-Easter maths problem solving for you to have a go at:

We would like thank you for all your hard work, dedication, support and enthusiasm for continuing your children’s learning, it is immensely appreciated,

Have a great Easter break,

Miss Smith and Mr Woodward

Primary 3 2/4/20

Good Morning Primary 3, hope you have all been having a fun and productive week! We hope that you spend some time relaxing and having some fun on April Fool’s Day yesterday. We have been getting some great updates on what you’ve been up to, from the work you’ve been doing to the food you’ve been making. And the food looks amazing! Here are some of the examples of some great food that has been made over the last week, it’s making us very hungry!

If you have been able to make some delicious food, could you write up a short set of instructions complete with ingredients and we could put together a P3 cookbook?

In keeping with the food theme, why not try to develop your cooking skills with Theo Michaels, a former Masterchef winner who is hosting live cooking classes on his Youtube channel. https://www.youtube.com/user/cookwiththeo Although some ingredients might be harder to find just now I am sure that as well as the live classes the back log of cooking videos he has will give you plenty of kitchen inspiration!

Today’s arts and crafts idea comes from a Dundee based mental health charity called Art Angel. They have been doing regular projects on their social media channels. If you have the items needed please have a go.  If you don’t have all the items see if you can maybe improvise with what items you do have at home?

‘Today’s home project is mono printing. All you need is a piece of plastic (old shopping bag) and some heavy bodied paint such as acrylic. Tape the plastic down to a hard surface, we used an old cardboard box. Paint on the plastic with a brush, either one colour of a mixture of colours. Gently place a blank piece of paper down onto the painted surface, then draw onto the paper using a pen or pencil. Once the drawing is finished peel back the paper and see what you’ve created. It may take a few goes to get the textures you would like, but just experiment and have fun.’
