I hope you managed to get some sports day activities completed yesterday? If not, don’t worry, you have all week! The important thing to remember is to save all of your scores and submit them altogether on the online form.

Reading: For reading today we want you to choose one of the books from your reading passport from yesterday. Pick 1 character from that book for our study for today. It doesn’t have to be your favourite character it can be any character as long as you find them interesting. Draw your character in the middle of a sheet of paper and then you are going to write as many descriptive words around your character as possible. We are looking for you to describe what the character is like not what they look like. Are they brave, are they loyal, honest, funny etc. Fill up your page with descriptive words. Then we would like you to write a short paragraph telling us why you chose this character and why they are important to the story/ interesting in the story. Here is Mr Woodward’s picture and description to give you some ideas (please don’t judge the drawing too harshly, Mr Woodward can’t draw feet or hands well!):

Good morning boys and girls!

We hope you all had a lovely weekend and are ready for our final two weeks of the term. This year, our last two weeks of P3 are looking very different to normal, however, we have some very exciting things coming up.

Mrs Ferguson has been busy planning a virtual Sports Day with the P7s and some of the Sports Committee from the Upper School. I have had a look at what is involved and it is very exciting indeed. A message of support has been given to you all to cheer the house teams along too! Let us know what you thought of it once you watch it!

There are a few activities for you to complete. It is up to you whether you complete these all in one day, a few a day or just one a day this week. The important thing is that you keep track of your scores and at the end of all of the activities, you submit your scores into the form provided. Mrs Ferguson will then count everyone’s scores altogether and announce the winning house, exciting stuff!  Mr Woodward and I will be taking part for our teams too! Let’s go Waverley, let’s go! J

Rights Respecting Schools

This week our RRS Article is all about discrimination. Article 2 is in the News right now, so could make for some interesting discussion. Some activities you may wish to try are:

  • Article 2 uses some words you might not know very well. Look up discrimination, ethnicity, race and gender to find out what they mean. Try to explain Article 2 to somebody at home now that you know the meaning of these words.

  • Being happy and proud about who we are as people is important. If you have read the book ‘The Flamingo Who Didn’t Want To Be Pink’, children at William Tyndale School made the story into a video. Try to get all your family and friends to tell you the best things they like about being themselves and the best things about you.
  • Imagine that you are treated differently and not allowed to go to school, have friends and play because of the colour of your hair. … How would this feel? What would you say and do? Discuss this with the grown ups at home
  • Look at these images above. They show Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. Create a poster showing these images with a written caption explaining what each word means and why Article 2: Non-Discrimination is important.

Spelling Words Week Beginning 15th June 2020

This will be our last formal week of giving spelling words. Remember to go over your common words too.

Problem Solving

Tom’s Dad sowed some tomato seed in February. He gave Tom one of the tomato plants in a pot.

At the beginning of May, Tom put his tomato plant outside. On the same day he sowed a bean in another pot.

Ten days later the bean plant was just 1 cm (centimetre) above the soil surface. Tom measured his tomato plant which was already 38 cm tall.

Each evening Tom measured his two plants.

On the evening of the next day the little bean plant had grown another 2 cm so it was 3 cm high. Each day it continued to grow double the amount it had grown the day before.

The tomato plant grew at a steady 5 cm a day.

After how many days were the two plants the same height when Tom measured them in the evening? How high were they?

Reading: For today’s reading we would like you to begin a reading passport. This is a record of some books that you have read. It does not have to be school books so if you have read all 7 Harry Potter books then you can put down each of the books and write a little bit about them. We need the name of the book, the author and a little bit about what happens in the book as well as what you think about the book. If you can on the map, fill in where the book takes place or where it was written.

It’s the end of the week Primary 3 and we have been incredibly impressed with all of the superb work you have been sending us and how much effort you are putting in, we’re so proud of all of you. Please make sure you take time for yourselves as today you would be getting your Free Time Friday time. We know that you all have definitely earned it all! We hope you all have amazing weekends and we are looking forward to next week when we can hear all about the wonderful things you have been up to!

Good morning Primary 3! It was fantastic to hear from you all yesterday, it definitely put an extra spring in our steps listening to your wonderful news and stories!

For today’s ocean themed activity we are getting our science on! We are asking, if you have the materials, to experiment with buoyancy. Before you begin, write your hypothesis, what do you think will happen and what do you think allows sharks to float? Follow the instructions and try to write your own science report on the attached reporting sheet as you are doing the experiment. science investigation sheet

Shark Buoyancy Experiment:

Materials:

Toilet paper roll

Marker

3 pennies

Balloon

Vegetable oil

Bowl

Water

Tape

Instructions:

Draw a shark on the toilet paper roll (or cut out a shark on paper and tape it on).

Tape 3 pennies, equally spaced, on the bottom of the toilet paper roll.

Fill the bowl with water.

Drop the shark in the water. What happens?

Fill a balloon with vegetable oil, tie the balloon closed.

Place the balloon inside the middle of the toilet paper roll.

Place the shark back in the bowl of water. Now what happens? Why do you think it happens? What does it tell you about how sharks stay afloat in water?

Numeracy: Today’s Numeracy is all about number square patterns. We would like you to use your times tables on this number square: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/paint-the-squares. What do you notice about the times tables patterns? Do any of the patterns look the same? What kind of patterns do they make? Try as many different times tables as you can and see what patterns you can make. Try to do more than one times table at the same time using different colours and see what patterns you can make, what happens when times tables have the same numbers in them? You could also make it into a game with someone in your house, who can complete their times table first. Take turns to fill in the squares but remember that if you both need the same number to complete your table you will have to think carefully about when to colour it in!

Reading

Reading for today is slightly different from our normal Thursday reading.  Today it is about reading and talking about your understandings.

As you are reading the activities, you will be working on your critical thinking skills, working out the meaning of the information you are reading and thinking about what it is asking you to do.

It is not expected that you complete them all, there is a selection included that you can choose from. It would be great if you could complete them with an adult or a sibling so that you can share your thoughts and reasoning with them and have a discussion around your understanding.

Good morning Primary 3 and welcome to Mercredi, or Wednesday! We hope you’ve been having a fabulous week so far and we are very much looking forward to our Teams chat. Mr Woodward’s class meet is at 10am, Miss Smith’s chat is at the slightly later time of 10.30am. It’s always what we look forward to most about our week!

For today’s ocean themed activity all you will need is paper, some paint and then anything else you’d like to add yourself on top of that because today we are thinking of making hand-fish. As it turns out a handfish is an actual fish but our hand fish will be fish made out of your own hands! Just add paint to your hands and press your hands to your paper and then add eyes and a mouth and decorate the scene around it, we’d love to see a school of weird and wonderful fish and remember, we may all be different fish but we all swim together!

Maths: For maths today we are leaving weighing behind and looking at volume. Measuring volume means measuring how much of a liquid you have. For volume we use millilitres (ml) and litres (L). There are 1,000 ml in 1 L and in every 1 L there are 1,000 ml. Try these conversions between litres and millilitres:

One Reading group last week read about Winnie and Wilbur staying at home, just like we have had to do for months now. Have a little read of

the book and try to write your own Winnie and Wilbur story?

Here is a planning page to get you started. Remember, of course, your core targets. Remember also your paragraphs to show a clear beginning, middle and end. As a challenge, try to use speech marks within your story to show what might be being said. There are some useful phrases in the plan for you to use, but please pad your story out using descriptions. Good morning Primary 3 and welcome back to another week of hopefully fun and challenging work and even better weather so you can relax and enjoy the sun if it comes! Since the lockdown began there have been different stories of the environment healing and of the world becoming greener and healthier. And what better way to do our part than to think about World Oceans Day which is today! All week we will be thinking about activities to do to keep the environment and specifically the seas and oceans of the world in mind.

The Article of the week this week is number 42: The right that everyone knows about you rights!

Some activities you can try include

  • Do you know your ‘birthday right?’ This is a fun idea thought up by schools in the North East of England – look up, and remember if you can, the article with the same number as the day of the month you were born. Try to get all your family and friends to know their ‘Birthday Right’. Here are all the rights on one page.
  • Imagine that you didn’t know any rights and that all children everywhere have rights. How would you feel about that? Can you think of any problems children might face? Write a poem or story called “Child with no Rights”.
  • Have a look and a listen to some of the songs and videos made by schools to hep children learn about rights. Which one do you like best? Share this with your family and safely on-line with your friends.
  • If you were a teacher of very young children, how would you help them to understand about their rights. This video made by Unicef Australia might help to get you started.

Good morning everyone. How are we all? We hope you had a lovely weekend. Who can tell us the date today in French? Do you remember how to say ‘first’? and also, we are into a new month. Who knows ‘June’ en francais?

This week’s Rights Respecting Schools Article is Article 19: Protection from violence, abuse and neglect.

Some activities you may wish to try are:

  • Article 19 means that no child should be hurt, hit or treated badly. Find out about the punishments for children in schools in Victorian times. Imagine you lived then and wanted to end physical punishment in school. Write a letter to Queen Victoria explaining why you think things should change.
  • Draw or list some of the people whose job it is to help you stay safe and protected.
  • Think about the feelings we have when we know  we are  safe and cared for. Write a poem or song to describe how this feels. Use good metaphors and similes to describe the emotions.
  • What do you know about being safe online? Have a conversation about this with the adults you live with. Talk about safe settings on your router and on all devices in the house. Ask your family to look at this Safer Internet website and let you watch some of the videos in the resources section.

For today’s Children’s Gardening Week ideas, why not try to make this DIY bird-feeder using a plastic bottle, some scissors, pencils, string and bird feed? Remember that anything using scissors and cutting into the bottle will need to be done with an adult! But hopefully the bird feeder can be used to attract all kinds of birds to your garden like the Blue Tits Annabel has had visiting her garden!

Bonjour et bon Mercredi! We made it to Wednesday and that means today we have our Teams catch up chat! It was lovely to see and hear from so many of you last week and Mr Woodward was impressed he finally got the whiteboard working so you could all have a play about and write messages and attempt to play noughts and crosses against each other! Maybe a noughts and crosses tournament is in order? The chat will be at 10am, looking forward to seeing you all there!

For today’s Garden Week idea why not try creating your own version of a sensory path in your garden? (Depending on the weather, maybe if it rains it’s an indoor activity?) Outline a path in your garden if you can, then using whatever you have that you will be able to walk on barefoot set out your path. Have a go at walking along your sensory path and try to describe using a few adjectives how it feels in each section. Get other members of your family to try it too and see if they felt the same things you did!

Imagine yourself on a spaceship and there is a button that makes anything you can think of. What would you make using the button and what would you use it for? Describe the spaceship you are on, describe what the button looks like and describe what you make with your button. Make sure to have a beginning, middle and end to your story with 1 problem you need to solve using the thing you make with the button.

The Empty Palace

You are the son or daughter of a king and queen. One day you wake up and the whole palace is empty. How do you feel being in an empty palace? Your mission in your story is to investigate and track down everyone in the palace. How did they disappear, what happened to them and how do you get them back?

Sands of Akwa

You have landed on a strange planet looking for some special treasure. What does the planet look like, who is with you and what are you looking for? While looking for the treasure you meet some people who try to help you, and some people who want to stop you. Who are these different people? Your story should start when you land on the planet, you meet the different characters and our adventure should take you to your treasure.

Tom Thumb and the Football Team

Tom Thumb spends part of the story stuck indoors when all he wants to do is go outside. Think of an adventure you would like to have in your local area once you are allowed outside again and write about it. Where would you go, what would you do, who would you be with? How does it feel being stuck indoors and how does it feel to finally be allowed outside again?

Stinky Street

In Stinky Street Franklin is trying to stop the sale of his house so he doesn’t have to move away from where he lives. Imagine that Franklin actually wanted to move. Where would he move to, what does his new house look like? What kinds of things are near his new house and who does he meet? Describe the excitement of moving to a new house and of meeting new people and exploring a new area.

Maths: Today we are looking at weight and converting weight from grams to kilograms. To change between grams and kilograms you have to remember that there are 1,000 grams (g) in 1 kilogram (kg). So 1,000g = 1kg, 2,000g = 2kg etc.

It’s Tuesday, it’s mardi, it’s already nearly the middle of the week! We have been delighted with the hard work and creativity you have all been showing us across these last few months and we hope you have enjoyed doing everything as much as we have enjoyed seeing it.

For today’s Children’s Gardening Week activity, if you have the materials, create a a fairy house for your garden. You will need a plantpot, or just something you can paint and can stand on its own, and some paints. Once it’s done leave it in your garden and wait for the fairies to come!

Reading: Answer these true or false statements based on your reading books. If the statement is false write the correct statement underneath using full sentences. Make up 3 of your own when you are finished.

  2. Tom got stuck into the pudding and thrown out the house.
  3. Tom’s Mum gave him a bath inside of a thimble.
  4. Tom ended up making friends with King Arthur.
  5. King Arthur drove Tom back to his village to find his parents.

Stinky Street

  1. Franklin lives on a street with a brick wall on one end and it overlooks an ice cream shop.
  2. Chicken and Rhubarb pies are made on Thursdays.
  3. Mr Bragg wanted to buy Franklin’s house.
  4. Franklin wanted Mr Bragg to buy the house more than anything.
  5. Franklin’s Mum danced around with fairy lights on her head after Mrs Cox came to visit.

This should see you up until the Summer Holidays, should we need it to last this long. The grid includes things you would have been learning in class had we still been there. We will continue to post daily Numeracy, Literacy, RRS and extra tasks, however, the activities on the grid can be done in jotters, on paper, or as you see fit. Please complete what you can of it and do what fits with your schedule and family life. There is no expectation that every single activity is completed or indeed that the ones completed are shared with us. We are happy to see your work should you wish to record it for us and send it. Rights Respecting Schools Article of the week: Article 15 Freedom of Association with a focus on setting up or joining groups.

  • During these times it can be difficult to stay in touch with other young people and groups that we are part of. Make a list of 5 children that you would like to get in contact with. Write them a letter or video call them this week to find out how their week has been.
  • Think about a group or club you are part of. Create a poster or leaflet to encourage other people to join. Make sure to list all of the reasons why it is a good idea to join this group.
  • The word ‘association’ is interesting. You have perhaps heard of the Football Association (FA) or the Automobile Association (AA) Look up the meaning of ASSOCIATION and explain to somebody in your home what it means.

This week is National Children’s Gardening week which means, should the weather be good, there is plenty of things for you to do outside or inside to get into nature and gardening! Some of the ideas mean having seeds to plant but there are plenty that you can do without having access to seeds too, including colouring and some recipes you could try out! Primary 3 Friday 22nd May 2020

Good morning happy campers! How did we all sleep last night? I am sure you all slept better than you would have, had we actually been staying over at Lowport as per the original residential, but I also know you would have been exhausted after yesterday’s activities following the new alternate Lowport ‘camp’ experience anyway!

Did anyone have a disco in their house? We would love to hear about it if you did!

Remember to strip your bed today and tidy your room. There will be a room inspection so everything should be back in its rightful place!

Today would have been a lovely sunny day and a trip to Beecraigs Country Park to do some activities with the ranger. Why don’t you try to:

  • Make a home for a woodland creature of your choice. Try to make it from natural materials and test it to see whether you have made it waterproof.
  • Play some natural naughts and crosses and ask someone to play it with you. Make it out of natural materials.
  • Go a nature walk. Note down any signs of animals you see along the way. Look for tracks, holes and clues that show they are around.
  • We wouldn’t do this at Beecraigs, but how about having a little campfire with your family. Tell stories and toast marshmallows (If you have any).

Bonjour! Aujourd’hui, c’est Jeudi vingt et un Mai,

Today would have been our first day doing our P3 residential!

Because of this, we thought it would be fun to have a look at some of the places we would have been, as well as some of the activities we would have done over the next 2 days.

If you were set to be on the residential, today we would have been paying a visit to Linlithgow Palace, St Michael’s Parish Church and the Linlithgow Canal Centre, all of which are full of interesting facts and history. A tourist video and Pdf of information are included below.

In the original overnight residential, you would have had to carry your bags and cases up to your rooms, so why not carry your suitcases up and down your stairs a few times. Also, in the original overnight residential, you had a bed to make – next time your bedding is washed, put your own covers back on for practice!

We also would have had a play in the park and fed the ducks, so have a play in your back garden if you have one, or go on a walk with your family. As we walked around the lock, we would have completed a ‘treasure hunt’, so why not make up a treasure hunt for someone in your family. Or even better, get someone in your family to make one up for you!

At night time today, we would have had a talent show and disco. Why not get dressed up in your party clothes, put the music on, turn the lights down and have a house disco. Break it up with some entertainment and show your family some of your best talents!

Remember to go to bed early – you are exhausted with having had such an exciting day. No talking after lights out and you sleep soundly until about 7am! (This is not how it usually goes! :))

Write a diary entry of at least half a page of A4 about a day in space. Maths: For today’s maths we are looking at Tesselation. Tesselation is the creation of patterns using shapes tiled together, e.g.

Your challenge is to create your own tesselation pattern. You can draw the shapes, using a ruler for straight lines, you can use Paint or another art programme on your computer, or you could go outside and create a tesselated pattern in your garden using natural materials.

I hope you had a restful Monday and are ready for some new activities this week.

Reminders for this week:

  • We have our class online check-in tomorrow on Teams at 10am.

Article of the week:

Article 28 – The Right to an Education.

Some of the activities include watching: Be a Mr Jenson for inspiration on what makes a good teacher. Can you think of words to describe what a really good teacher would be like?

Do the same as above, but this time, think of words to describe what a really good learner would be like.

Imagine you have been asked to create your ideal lesson timetable for a day or a week at home or in school. Plan it out and decide what you would include and what you would leave out. Make sure it will provide children with a really good quality education!

Watch The Right to Education and use it to write a poem about education and learning.

Go have a look at The Book of Hopes and read through some of the poems and short stories together. Choose one you like best and teach someone else about it and why it stood out to you.
