Primary 7 – 11.05.18
Hello,
It has been a short but very quick week for Primary 7.
We have been very busy in numeracy learning a range of skills including taking away using chimney sums, solving algebraic equations, calculating the area of shapes, and working with more complex decimals and percentages.
On Wednesday morning Mr Krausen from the maths department at DCHS visited P7C to work on algebra. It was really challenging because we had to try to unlock a box by solving various equations.
Last week was Eco week. We have decided to continue to focus on Eco based activities and have been given a challenge to create an informative PowerPoint or poster based on plastic in the oceans. We learned that 80% of plastic waste in the ocean comes from the land and travels by river or by wind. It is causing the wildlife a lot of problems. We have been thinking of lots of ideas of how to reduce our plastic waste and how to prevent plastic going into our environment including oceans. We know how important it is to recycle our waste.
In PE primary 7 have been working on badminton. We have been learning about how to serve properly and keeping the shuttle going backwards and forwards. We have also been working really hard on aiming the shuttle in the correct direction. We have also been learning how to do an overhead clear which can be quite challenging. We have enjoyed playing the game ‘keep the kettle boiling’ – it is quite tricky but really fun!
On Thursday Mrs Clark and Mr Wright from DCHS science department came to work with both classes. We took part in two different investigations. One investigation was to work out how long it took to dissolve different amounts of salt. The other investigation was to compare changes in temperature in penguins (obviously we couldn’t get any penguins so we had to use test tubes!) We had to work in groups and work together to carry out these experiments. We all had different roles in the group and had to communicate clearly with one another. We had to accurately read temperatures and measure mass and volumes. We cannot wait to go up to the science department during our transition week to carry out more experiments!
On Thursday we shared our buddy posters with primary 6. We have been working really hard on these posters which gave the P6s lots of information about how to be a good buddy and the benefits of being a buddy. Primary 6 had lots of questions which we answered really well!
On Sunday some of P7 are heading off to France. We hope they have an amazing time and we are looking forward to their daily blogs and pictures!
Reminders:
Sunday – P7 leave to go to France
Monday – Indoor PE
Thursday – Triathlon at DCHS

We hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday weekend, we can’t believe it almost the middle of May already! This week we have been focusing on money during our maths lessons. If you are shopping this weekend please use your money skills to work out costs, check your change, check your receipts .
Debating skills are being developed as we delve into persuasive writing. We have been thinking about emotive writing techniques, interesting adjectives, different openers and eye catching alliteration. Please look out for examples of these.
This morning we are going to be introduced to our Buddies, everyone is very excited . We are sure that all the pupils of primary will make excellent buddies and we are proud of the preparation they have put into preparing for their new roles.

I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend and the lovely sunny weather!
We are all glad to be back together in class and are getting on with our new topic ‘The Seaside’. We have been learning all about what the seaside was like a long time ago, what people wore and the entertainment they had. We have learned about Punch and Judy shows and are starting to make our own puppets to play with in the classroom.
In Maths we have started work on time. The P1 children are looking at o’clock and half past and the P2 children will be doing work on quarter past and quarter to. This is something that you can be discussing lots at home to see how well the children are remembering what they have learned.
In Language this week we have been looking at alphabetical order and dictionary work. The P1 children have been sorting words into alphabetical order and the P2 children have been finding words in a simple dictionary.
Homework will resume next week as normal.
Quick reminder that PE is on Thursday with Mrs Ferguson and PE kit is required then. We will also be doing outdoor PE on Monday.
Thank you for your support

Primary 1 Update 9.5.18
Hello Everyone,
We hope you all enjoyed the lovely long sunny weekend!
Just a short but as always busy week this week!
In Writing the children have been learning about the features of fairytale stories and for the past 2 weeks we have taken time to create stories with a beginning, middle and end, come up with good and bad characters and created ‘happily ever after’ endings.
Here is some of their super work:
In addition to the normal class PE specialist time, over the next couple of weeks, the children will also have the opportunity to have a taster session of Judo.
In Science, we are continuing with our work on electricity. The children have been learning about appliances which use mains or batteries to provide electricity.
Thank you for your continuing support,

What a week we have had back at base camp! We decided that while the others were away at Dalguise we would create our own adventures! First of all we gave ourselves a camp name(s) Camp Everest was our official one but Camp donut and Camp cake were also used !!!!
We went on a safari to look for endangered species …..Once we had tracked them down we built a five star luxury resort …..check out our newly created bug hotel ! We saved lives and created new habitats.
We climbed to the top of Mount Everest and on our return we felt that we had to have extra ‘homework’….yum teeeheeee . The reason we climbed Mount Everest is because we designed some Eco flags and it was the highest point we could think of.
We took active maths to a whole new level , we were so quick that at one point we were scared our fingers would fly off.
Have you seen Andy Warhols pop art? Well his ‘Campbell soup’ one isn’t a patch on what we created this week .
All in a week’s work back at base camp , we hope everyone enjoyed Dalguise and had as much fun as we did .

This week Primary 1 have joined our school wide ‘Eco Week’. As a school we are working towards renewing our Eco Schools recognition. Primary 1 took part in the school wide litter pick up in the playground on Tuesday. We were able to talk about the danger litter causes to animals which might use our playground. We have also planted lettuce seed in our plant box outside the office. We will continue to look after these plants and hope to be able to taste some of this lettuce by the end of term. We have been learning about biodiversity in class and the ways we can protect endangered species.
Yesterday Brambleberry left us to travel back to his Enchanted Forest. So we have now started our new topic: ‘Farming’. In the coming week we will be learning about arable and livestock farms and the differences between them. We will be thinking about where the food we eat comes from.
In maths we are learning to double numbers and share amounts between 2 or 3 (e.g. finding a half or third of a number). We are continuing to practise addition and subtraction throughout the week and appreciate any help you are giving your child with this.
Reminders:
Homework is due on Fridays. This week there was reading and maths. Please also continue practising sounds and common words.
PE is on a Thursday, please remember to bring a named PE kit and water bottle.
Next week the children are off school on Monday and Tuesday, we look forward to welcoming them back on Wednesday 9th May.

Hello everyone
We have had a busy week in Primary 7. We had a visit from teachers and students from Deans Community High School today. They told us what it was like to move from Carmondean Primary to Deans High. They also answered any questions the children had about High School. It was a very informative session and very helpful for the children.
Some of the Primary 7 children will be leaving on our France Residential a week on Sunday (13th May). Please ensure that all letters are signed and returned and EHIC Health cards are returned to the school as soon as possible. If you require your child to take any medication on the trip then the appropriate form should be filled in and returned to the school before next Friday. For forms and any extra information please contact the school office as soon as possible.
The children created fantastic pieces of art work this week based on interesting skylines from around the world. They used photographs of famous skylines to help plan out their own. They then transferred their work onto black card and then painted beautiful skies with water colour paints which will frame their skyline. These are looking fantastic and will be on display until the end of term.
The children have also worked on creating informative posters for the Primary 6 children this week. Soon, the Primary 7’s will leave Carmondean Primary behind and the P6s will replace them as buddies to our new Primary 1 children in August. The children worked with a partner to create a poster that tells the Primary 6 children about their experiences of being a buddy and how to overcome any challenges. We will present these to the Primary 6 classes next week.
We are on holiday on Monday and Tuesday next week. Have a lovely long weekend and we will see the children on Wednesday.
Thank you for your support.

It’s the 1st May! We can’t believe how quick the year is going!
We have been working very hard in Primary 2/3. We have drawn ourselves with pencil and then added the features of a pirate: eye patches, Jolly Roger, hats, earings and black and gold teeth. We cut up coloured paper to make it more like a collage. They are now on display in our classroom with our own “Pirate name”.
We have been singing lots of pirate songs using a variety of instruments and incorporating dance moves. Encourage the boys and girls to perform one of the songs for you!
Today we are going to be writing a Pirate acrostic poem. We will use our writing skills and pirate knowledge to write some really interesting Pirate poems.
In Maths we have been learning about arrays. Both Primary 2 and Primary 3 have been using arrays to help solve multiplication questions and Primary 3 have been using them to help answer division questions too! We are so shocked at how easy times tables are becoming!
Its a big Eco-week this week and we will be learning about keeping our local environment clean and tidy, planting in our allocated planters and learning about the biodiversity of the coral reef. This should link nicely with our topic of Treasure Islands.
P.E- Outdoor on Monday, Indoor on Thursday
Thanks,
Miss Rafferty

Hope you have all had a lovely weekend and enjoyed a bit of peace and quiet if your little ones went to Lowport!
We are looking forward to hearing all about it this morning in Check In.
This week’s homework is phonics and reading. Again, please remind the children to include 3 detailed sentences underneath their words. Encourage lots of good vocabulary to make the sentences more interesting.
This week is Eco Week so we will be looking at outdoor learning involving maths and French. We will be preparing our very own P3 vegetable plot and we will be learning about Biodiversity and Life on Land. We will also be partaking in a Spring Clean of the outside areas of our school. Our time is 2:30 tomorrow (Tuesday 1st May) so feel free to come and join us if you can. Just let us or the office know.
Hope you all have a great week!

Spring Clean Up Day 1/5/18
On Tuesday 1st May we are holding a ‘Spring Clean’ around the school. All the children will be involved with this and should wear an appropriate jacket on the day. We are still looking for adult volunteers to help go outside with the classes.
If you are able to help with this event could you please leave a message or phone the school on 432492 telling us which of the following times you are available?
9.15 – 10.45
11.20 – 12.20
1.30 – 3.00
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you in advance

SCOTTISH HANDBALL FINALS
Primary 6 27.4.18
The pupils have made a flying (or swimming) start to our inclusion topic, working on some beautiful, bright and vibrant varieties of fish for our display; ‘the sea is full of different fish but we’re all swimming in the same school!’. We also made a start to our art topic for this term, looking at the work of Matisse and trying to come up with our own version of his ‘Snail’.
Pupils have continued working very hard in volleyball and basketball and have showed great skill, teamwork and really good examples of sportsmanship and fair play.
We have now finished Kaspar and after all the adventures we’ve been on with our favourite black cat there was smiles, sighs and lots of awws and it’s fair to say that Kaspar, Johnnie Trott and Lizziebeth made a great impression on everyone.
With Dalguise approaching fast the excitement has been building, with a lot of talk of what activity pupils are looking forward to most; the Giant Swing being an early favourite! Reminder to make sure pupils have warm clothes, clothes that are fine for getting very muddy as well as a bin liner to put the muddiest clothes in!

Primary 1 Update 25.4.18
Hello All,
This week we really enjoyed a visit to the forest as part of our Enchanted Forest topic. We enjoyed observing and taking photos of trees, plants and wildlife. We made bark rubbings using a crayon and paper and collected a range of leaves and twigs to create a woodland picture back in the classroom.
In Maths this week we have been continuing with work on data handling by creating and interpreting picture graphs and consolidating our work on tally marks.
In Writing this week we are going to create our very own class fairytale with special openers like ‘Once upon a time…’, ‘Far, far away…’ etc. If your child has any traditional fairytales at home, it would be great if you could explore the features together including the opening, the magic, the ‘happy ever after’ and the main characters.
Please remember P1 gym day is a Thursday and we would be very grateful if you could ensure your child has PE kit with them on this day.
Thank you for your continuing support,
P1 Teachers

Primary 2/3 did a fantastic job in their class assembly last week. We have received so many positive comments about our assembly from lots of teachers and children. Well done boys and girls!
We have now started our new and final topic for Primary 2/3 which is Treasure Island and Pirates! We received a message in a bottle from Pete the Pirate tell us that he was on a desert island hunting for treasure. He asked Primary 2/3 for their help to teach him all about Pirates, Desert islands and finally help him find the hidden treasure. All the boys and girls are very excited! We have also been learning some songs linked to pirates!
We will be linking lots of our numeracy and literacy to our new topic as well as IDL.
Primary 3 are off to Lowport this week! The remaining Primary 3’s will join Mrs Smith and the other Primary 3 children to complete some science investigations and take part in lots of arts and crafts.
P.E is outdoor on a Monday (Supported by our P.E students) and on Thursday with Mrs Ferguson our P.E specialist.
Mrs Fox is working with our class this term too. She is going to be crafting with the children to make treasure and jewellery.
Can all children please make sure that they have indoor shoes and water bottles.

This week we will not be sending home any phonic or maths work because of our trip to Lowport. We will be setting reading as normal.
On Wednesday the children need to come to school in their PE kit. The football challenge will be taking place outside so please ensure your child is dressed appropriately. It is likely to be cold and there may be some showers so I would recommend tracksuit bottoms, a t shirt, fleece and a waterproof jacket. Please also ensure a snack is packed along with a water bottle. The children will be changing into their school uniform on return so please make sure this is packed in their bags.
On Thursday some of our P3s will be heading to Lowport. If you have any questions or queries regarding the trip please get in touch. Children remaining will be working hard creating an outstanding outdoors corner for our classes and hopefully will also do a bit of gardening weather permitting.
Have a good week!

This week has been a hectic week with the assembly rehearsals in full flow! The classes have been helping make props, going over lines, belting out their songs and polishing their dances and if the rehearsals are anything to go by they’re going to be fabulous!
We’ve continued with our space topic this week looking at the order of the planets. Pupils have had some great ideas for creative mnemonics to try and remember the order which are definitely unforgettable.
In reading we have been reaching the climax of Kaspar and pupils are getting tense and excited about how the story is going to finish up, with a whole host of scenarios that could be played out as to how the story ends.
In maths this week we went back in time to learn how the Mayans did maths. It was an interesting time with a completely different number system it took us a while to get our heads around but we will continue our Mayan Maths next week!
