Primary 4 30.5.19

Hello everyone

We have had a very busy week in Primary 4 so far. In P4C our learning of minibeasts continued with the story of “The Cautious Caterpillar”. This caterpillar was afraid to change into a butterfly because he loved being a caterpillar so much. However he was brave, made the transformation and was so pleased that he did. We discussed how we could apply that to our own lives and discussed times that we had been brave and tried something new and how this was important. All of the children are about to “transform” into Primary 5 children and some decided to write down information about themselves to share with their future P5 teacher. We will continue to discuss this and learn more about the life cycles of minibeasts through our topic.

We have been working extremely hard on the “Rock Bottom” Primary 4/5 show this week. Our dress rehearsal in front of the whole school and staff is next Thursday 6th June. You should have received costume letters home detailing what your child needs to bring in to wear during the performances. Almost all children should provide a plain but brightly coloured t-shirt and leggings/trousers that we are allowed to cut into zig zags at the bottom for a prehistoric feel! Please let us know if there are any problems with providing parts of your child’s costume and we will work hard to solve any problems. Thank you for your support with this. The final show performances to friends and families are on Thursday 13th June 2019 with a performance at 1:30pm and another at 6:30pm. All children are expected to attend both performances. If your child cannot attend for any reason then please let us know as soon as possible. Tickets will go on sale for this event soon.

This week Primary 4 were involved in the whole school spring clean litter pick. Our area was the perfect playground area and the left hand side and back fence on the field. We found lots of litter and we were happy that we could help Mrs Muir and her Eco Warriors along with the rest of the school to help make our playground beautiful. Well done Primary 4! Even the rain didn’t dampen our spirits! See some photos of us working hard below! 🙂

We were visited today by Mr Canning, the chanter/pipes tutor that visits the school weekly. All children were treated to him playing the chanter and the pipes for us! Today children will receive letters home to ask whether they would be interested in chanter/brass tuition beginning in Primary 5. Please fill in these forms and return them to school if your child is interested in taking part in a trial lesson next week.

Reminders –
PE days – Tuesday and Thursday
Homework (reading, spelling activity and one other activity due on Fridays)

Thank you for your continued support.
Have a lovely weekend when it comes.

Primary 2 27.5.19

Primary 2 have been set the task to research a famous pirate. Children have been asked to create a poster to display all their facts they have discovered and their pirate pictures. There will be no other homework tasks set for the remaining weeks however we do encourage you to keep on reading with your child as they will be getting a new reading book weekly. The pirate homework is due Monday 10th June.

Today is the Spring clean! Primary 2 have the task of clearing up the outer playground- we will be tackling this area in the afternoon so fingers crossed the weather clears up.

P2M have been enjoying Futsal sessions recently and the children are really being put through their paces. P2R will get a chance in the up coming weeks.

Primary 2 have been learning lots about Pirates and Island life through may different aspects of the curriculum. We have even had letters from our Pirates telling the children all sorts of interesting facts. We are hoping to go on a pirate hunt up Dechmont in the up coming weeks- weather permitting. We will be in touch again about this to confirm dates.

Please remember P.E kits (Tuesday and Thursday), water bottles and indoor shoes.

Primary 6 25.05.19

What a busy couple of weeks we’ve had in Primary 6. Last week, we had a transition morning at Deans Community High School where pupils had a taster of different lessons such as Science, P.E, English and Computing, to name but a few. This was a fantastic insight for all pupils and they have many more transition activities to look forward to in Primary 7.

We also took part in the Community Sports Festival with our fellow cluster primary schools. Pupils were mixed between schools and were able to try out 8 different sports – Cricket, Taekwondo, Football, Rugby, Handball, Athletics, Hockey and Dance.  Lots of fun was had by all and we were so lucky with the weather.

This week, we came back refreshed after our holiday Monday into assembly mode for next Friday. The pupils are bursting with ideas for their assembly and it’s really taking shape. We have been creating lots of bright and colourful posters for Deans Gala Day using persuasive language. Pupils have also been planning and researching their big homework – creating a graphic novel. This is due on 21st of June. Pupils have a challenge sheet to help them complete this and can ask for guidance from their teachers also. Graphic novels can be created using different apps or a paper version. We look forward to seeing these progress.

Primary 6 pupils spent time with getting to know their soon-to-be Primary 1 buddies in Outdoor Learning. They were helping the nursery boys and girls to learn new games and vice versa. Pupils will get the chance to do Outdoor Learning with the nursery pupils every week.

Reminders for next week:

Wednesday – outdoor P.E kit needed with Mrs Ferguson.

Friday – Spelling homework due. Primary 6 assembly, parents/carers are welcome to come and watch.

Please remember to bring a water bottle to school and on warmer days, apply sun cream before coming to school in the morning.

Thank you for your support,

Mrs Hunter and Mr Woodward.

Primary 1 – Week Beginning 20.05.19

What a busy week we have had! We all came back from the holiday Monday with lots of exciting stories and shared these during circle time.

Our Farming theme is now well underway and we have been exploring the different animals that live on a farm and making crafts for our role play areas. We have begun report writing and have been writing about the role of a farmer.

We are revisiting money and are looking at the value of coins up to £2 and will be moving onto ordering them into the correct order.

Reminders:

We have a judo taster session on Monday 27 May – children are not required to bring anything.

P1 0-P have their class assembly on Tuesday 28 May – adults to come to the fire door next to the new gym hall for 9.00am.

P5 24th May 2019

Good afternoon,

We have had a busy week rehearsing for the show, everything is coming together nicely.  Can we please ask parents and guardians to help your children to learn their lines as our dress rehearsal is only a week away.

A letter regarding t-shirts and leggings will be coming home asap.  If your child is a main character, an egghead, a growler, a miner or a cavey your tops will be provided.  Everyone will need to provide black leggings/trousers with zig zag cuts at the bottom please.

In maths we have started looking at measurement, using rulers to calculate the perimeters of different shapes.

In reading we have begun to plan our debate on whether Charlie (and the chocolate factory) should have saved or spent his 50p.  We will continue with this next week, children have come up with great arguments!!

Hope you have a lovely weekend

Primary 3 24.5.19

We are well and truly in the midst of our Ocean Commotion topic now. We have been learning about the fish and their adaptations to be able to live in the different parts of the sea. We found out how fossils are formed and why the sea is the perfect place for fossils to exist, with all the mud at the bottom of the ocean and the pressure from the water.

In Science, we used electrical circuits to make our own glowing fish who live in the twilight and midnight zones of the ocean. Some of these fish make their own light, so we used batteries, bulbs and wires to make our fish light up. Can you see where we placed the bulbs?

We had a letter from Peanut the turtle, asking us to investigate why some of his friends were having trouble in the ocean due to something called ‘plastic’. Our freeze in the classroom is overcrowded by plastic packaging and particles too and now our fish are swimming in a rubbish ridden ocean.

We are currently learning how this affects the wildlife in the ocean and how long it takes for certain items to change in appearance. Quite often, plastic stays in the same appearance for hundreds of years.

We were shocked at the effects of the mammals and fish in the sea.

In other news, we are beginning to collect a LOT of school jumpers, cardigans, T-shirts, and parts of PE kits with no name. If you recognise any of these items from P3B, please speak to Miss Smith who will be happy to give them all a home. 🙂

Tuesday of next week is our big Spring clean, where we will be going to the playground to do a big clean up, doing gardening and collecting rubbish.

A quick reminder that the Summer Fair is on Saturday the 8th June. If you have any items for stalls or if you can help out, please get in touch with the PSA. We hope you can come along to support it!

Thank you for your continued support,

Miss Smith, Mrs Smith, Ms Matheson

Primary 7 24.05.19

Primary 7 have been very busy this week.

We have been working on our topic – ‘Leaving a Legacy’. Each team have been working on a campaign based on an environmental issue that we feel strongly about. We have been busy writing letters, creating posters, PowerPoints and filming our campaign speeches. We will continue to work hard on our campaigns over the next week.

In maths and numeracy we have been working on a range of topics including algebra and data handling. We also have been enjoying playing ‘beat the buddy’ in mental maths.

We have been busy planning and preparing for our Leavers’ Assembly – we will continue to work on this over the next few weeks and are getting excited about performing it in front of everyone on our last week of Primary school!

Our big Primary 7 piece of homework is due in next Friday. The children have worked really hard at home and in class on their projects. All pupils have a checklist to help them make sure they have all the information they need for their My Life So Far. These projects will be shared with peers and shown at assembly to celebrate their time at Carmondean Primary.

Reminders:

Monday & Wednesday – PE kits

Friday 31st May – My Life So Far is due!

Primary 4 23.5.19

Hello everyone

It was lovely to welcome the children back after the long weekend. They had lots of lovely stories to share 🙂

In PE we are beginning some work on different aspects of Athletics. So far we have been discussing and working on the skills of short and long distance running. The children also used a baton during relay races which required lots of team work and communication. Hurdles have also introduced while running short distances and this has provided extra challenge! We look forward to seeing the children grow and improve in this area this term 🙂

Last week everyone wrote an imaginative piece of writing all about the adventures of Charlotte and Wilbur from our reading book – Charlotte’s Web. These stories were very detailed and full of interesting adventures! The children are now developing the skills of redrafting their work, with excellent spelling and handwriting being very important. Well done everyone for working hard on this!

Our caterpillars are in their chrysalis’! Over the long weekend some of the caterpillars attached themselves to the roof of their container and transformed into a chrysalis. Some did their transformations on the ground. Mr Shanks helped us to move them all from their small container to their much bigger netted container which will hold them when they are butterflies. We are loving watching them grow and develop! Stay tuned for further updates.

Thank you for all your support. Have a lovely weekend when it comes.

Primary 1 – week beginning 13.05.19

What a busy week we have had. We have been exploring road safety and have developed our knowledge on stop, look and listen. The children all showed an excellent ability to assess whether a road was safe to cross and were able to discuss the process.

We also had two visitors who showed us how to do CPR. They discussed, at a basic level, when CPR may be required and showed the children how to do it, using dummies, to the tune of ‘Baby Shark!’ They all did so well and we were impressed with their mature attitude and sensible questions.

As the weather heats up please ensure your child comes to school wearing sunscreen and with a sun hat. Unfortunately we are not able to apply sunscreen unless there is a medical reason so please ensure that this is applied before school.

Our P1 assemblies have begun and Mrs Steel and P1S did a fabulous presentation around fairytales. P1O-P are getting ready for their assembly on Tuesday 28 May and Miss Christy’s class will follow after. Look out for more information!

Primary 4 17.5.19

Hello everyone

This week has been an exciting one in Primary 4. We are really enjoying watching our caterpillars grow and grow. They are so much bigger than they were last week and we hope that by the time we are back to school on Tuesday that they will each be in their chrysalis! See the photo below to see how much they have grown.

In maths we have been continuing to develop our knowledge of fractions. We have been using whiteboards, pens and coloured counters to help us to find fractions of amounts (such as 1/4 of 24). The children have worked very hard with this and most are now also able to find 2/5 or 7/9 of a number too! Well done P4!

Show rehearsals are continuing and our dress rehearsal in front of the school is in 3 weeks time. If your child has a script at home and still has words to learn can you please encourage them to have their words fully learned by Tuesday. We really appreciate all the support you are providing your child with at home.

Our first homework share today was a huge success! Many children were able to share fantastic pieces of homework and tell us all about what they have been doing at home this week. This learning experience would not be possible without your help so thank you so much for working with the children on this at home. We look forward to homework share again next Friday!

Reminders
PE days – Tuesday and Thursday
Homework share – Friday
Reading pages – Read pages before Friday 24th

Thank you for your continued support.
Have a lovely long weekend and we look forward to welcoming back the children on Tuesday 21st May.

Brexit V Remainers

While most of our P7s have made a Brexit to France, the Remainers have also had a great time back in school.  These children have been planning Sports Day, Assemblies, Designing and making Maths Games, investigating Virtual and Augmented Reality and a host of other exciting activities. They have all participated fully and worked really well as a team – we are proud of them.  Here are some pictures of the Maths Games they created and played with other children in the school.

France Trip

Fantastic day had by all at Plopsaland, it was a hard job getting through the door though!

Mrs Wylie now has a sore throat from screaming too much on the rides but at least she had her eyes open … Mrs Wotherspoon went down the water slide with her eyes firmly shut !

Isla – the beach was in Calais
Niven – for breakfast we had more crepes !

Miss all the other starbursts x

France Trip

An insightful day had by all. We started out with a tour of Passchendaele memorial museum which involved a visit to a dugout and a series of trenches . After lunch in the sun, we walked around the memorial poppy garden . It’s an incredible display of seven individual sections , which form a poppy when viewed together.

All our pupils were immersed in the guided tour , we were very proud of their enthusiasm and their behaviour .

From there we travelled to Poelcapelle Commonwealth cemetery and then to Langemark German cemetery . During WW2 , Hitler visited Langemark as he had fought near the area during WW1.

We headed back to the beach after dinner and are now getting ready for bed !
Need our energy for theme park tomorrow!!
