Primary 5

P5 have been working on a variety of tasks this week.

In Topic each country group has presented their display to the class. They came up with some unusual facts to share with each other. Both Miss Morris and Mrs Gilmour are very impressed with the effort all the children put into this! You will have an opportunity to read these when you visit us on Parents’ night and on our open day in October.

In writing the children have started to investigate the persuasive genre. They are writing letters to persuade people to come to our open morning using persuasive language. Look out for these letters coming home soon.

On Wednesday both classes took part in a Multi-sport Festival at DCHS. This was a great success and the children enjoyed trying out a variety of sports and meeting new friends. They were able to learn new skills in basketball, football, hockey, team games and athletics. Well done everyone!

Over the past few weeks the children have been learning about patron saints in R&ME. This Thursday Miss Morris’ class learned about Scotland’s patron saint, Saint Andrew, whilst Mrs Gilmour’s class looked at Saint David, who is the patron saint of Wales. We have all really enjoyed learning about the different traditions each country in the UK has when celebrating these religious figures.

Primary 1 25.9.19

This week Primary 1 have been thinking a lot about caring and how to look after each other, babies, animals and plants. The children have enjoyed setting up the classroom so that they can explore this more. We now have a hospital in the role play area and pet toys and resources in the home corner. We have been thinking about the people who care for us and how we can care for babies.
In maths we have been learning the numbers 7,8 and 9. The children are becoming very good at writing each number correctly and counting out amounts on fingers, cubes, rekenreks and 10s frames.
We have been learning the sound ‘n’ this week and consolidating our learning on all sounds so far (s,a,t,p,i,n). Please continue to practise each sound at home: how to say it, write it and identify which words have the sound at the start.
We gave out homework for the first time this week. Your child should have received a reading book. This should be read throughout the week and discussed with an adult. Please bring in the reading book every day so that children can also read in class. Your child will also have a yellow jotter and a sheet of paper with 6 suggested activities to try at home. Please complete the starred activities over the next 2 weeks, recording what you have done (when required) in the yellow jotter. The homework activities are to be completed by Tuesday 8th October. Your child’s teacher is happy to discuss homework with you further if you have any questions.
A reminder that PE is on a Monday. We are now changing for PE so please ensure that your child comes to school with a white T-shirt and blue/black shorts on this day.
Thank you for your continued support

Primary 2 – Week Beginning 16.09.19

We have enjoyed our short week in Primary 2 and have been very busy trying to fit everything in! The children enjoyed sharing their long weekend news with the class and it was lovely to hear about what everyone got up to.

This week we have been counting in 10s and the teachers were very impressed with the children’s ability to do this – well done. Please keep practising this at home too, particularly counting on in 10s from a given number e.g. 12, 22, 32…

We have also continued our work on phonemes and focused specifically on the ‘oy’ phoneme. This can be a tricky one and there was a little confusion so practise at home will be beneficial.

We are still enjoying our topic on life in the past and explored some household items from the past. The children looked closely at a Grandfather Clock and made their own version. We look forward to you seeing these on the wall at Parents’ Evening.

There are still several children coming to school on a Tuesday/Thursday without a gym kit. Please can you ensure shorts and t-shirt are provided on a Tuesday and an outdoor kit (joggers/shorts – weather dependent) are provided on a Thursday.

Thanks in advance,

Miss Pringle, Mrs Oliver and Miss Rafferty

Primary 4 22.9.19

Hello everyone

We hope you’re having a lovely weekend.

It has been another busy week in Primary 4. In RME we have been continuing to learn about Communities and Belonging. We understand that some people choose how to live their lives based on the religion that they follow. For the past 3 weeks we have been learning about how people who follow the Jewish religion only eat certain foods called “Kosher”. We have also learned that they never mix meat or milk together, they even have separate sinks, plate and cutlery for meat and milk dishes. This week the children shared their understandings by creating a meat menu and a milk menu (starter, main course and dessert) containing only Kosher foods. We will continue to explore different food laws, looking at different religions and what they believe.

Our Viking topic is well underway. The children have been comparing how a Viking’s life was different to our own lives. However we have found some similarities too. The children noted how Viking boys often led very different lives to those of Viking girls and how boys and girls now have much more similar lives. We will create our own realistic Viking characters and will write scripts telling of some of their adventures. We hope to share these with you at parents evenings in October.

We have been very impressed with the children’s developing knowledge of time in numeracy. We have now explored both analogue and digital clocks and have practised o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. We have also explored the differences between am and pm times and the children learned what activities in their lives that they do in a.m. times and in p.m. times. Next week we will explore time in 5 minute intervals using the digital clock. We will also look at longer periods of time such as weeks, months and years through using calendars. Please continue to support your child with telling the time at home.

Reminders
Homework share it jotters are not due in until Thursday 3rd October. All starred activities must be completed, the rest are optional.
PE days are Tuesday (Outdoor, weather permitting) and Thursday for Indoor PE with Mrs Ferguson.
Parents Consultations take place on Wednesday 9th October 5-7:30pm and Thursday 10th October 4-6:30pm. Information regarding appointments will be made available soon.

Thank you for your continued help and support.

Primary 6 Update Week beginning 23 September

Primary 6 are continuing to learn about ‘The Industrial Revolution’. This week we will be learning about Robert Owen, how concerned he was about factory working conditions and what he did to improve them. We will also be going on our class trip to New Lanark on Thursday 26 September. This will be fantastic as we will get to see a real mill town, the factory and also the cotton making machines.

The ‘Inventors Challenge’ homework was given out last week. As you will have seen, by Friday the children should have a rough plan of their idea and be ready to share it with the rest of the class. We can’t wait to hear about all the fantastic inventions primary 6 think of. When the challenge is completed, all parents and carers will be invited in to school to see and hear about the inventions too.

In gym we have been training for the cross-country run in October. The children are all becoming much fitter and faster. Letters about the event were sent home last week.

Please remind your child to bring suitable gym kit to school.

Have a great week.

The primary 6 teachers

Primary 1

What a short week we had in Primary 1! We hope you all enjoyed the long, well deserved weekend. The children have been busy learning the correct formation of ‘p’ this week and have been looking at blending simple words. We focused on sorting ‘an’, ‘is’, and ‘and’ into the correct columns and practised writing these on whiteboards. It would be beneficial for the children if they keep on practising all the sounds they have learned so far at home too.

In maths the children have been using cubes, rekenreks and 10 frames to count objects up to 6. They have been using number fans to help them identify numerals up to 10 and have been counting backwards and forwards to 20. They have been focusing on forming the number 6 correctly and have been using online games to help them with this.

The children have been learning how to keep themselves and their body healthy this week. In P.E. the children worked hard on their fitness and co-ordination and they continued to explore healthy foods through play. We focused on the importance of brushing our teeth and how this helps to protect our enamel and gums. The children also learned how to write instructions and sequenced the steps of brushing teeth into the correct order. They used their knowledge of letter sounds to help them write new words.

Homework will be handed out on Tuesday the 24th September and is expected to be returned on the 8th October. The children will be given a homework folder with a grid and resources to help them complete their homework. The tasks with stars must be completed and the others are optional. If you have any questions about the homework, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us after school or contact the school office.

Thank you for your continued support.

Primary 7 20.09.19

Hello, it has been a very short week, however we have managed to fit a lot in!

Rachel from Dogs Trust came to visit us on Thursday with her dog (don’t worry it wasn’t real!) She taught us about what dogs need to be happy and healthy and answered all of our questions about her job. We enjoyed learning how to budget for a dog. We had to decide which dog we would like and picked dog products which suited our chosen dog. Each item had a price which we had to add up. We couldn’t believe how much money our dogs would cost us to look after them for just one year – the amount ranged from £750 – over a thousand pounds!!

In maths we are continuing to learn about the properties of 2D shapes – we focused on the circle. We learned about the names of each part of a circle and were very good at the circle quiz! In numeracy we have continued to look at place value to a million and beyond – this has included rounding, estimating, decimals and much more!

With Ms Fox we have started to create our Japanese masks which we have been planning and practising for. These masks will be unique as we have made up our own special patterns inspired by Japanese culture. Look out for them around the school over the next couple of weeks!

In literacy we learned about a special poem which originates from Japan called a Haiku. It is a special poem which is only 3 lines long! It also follows a rule where the first line contains 5 syllables, the second line contains 7 syllables and the third line has 5 syllables. These poems are normally about nature, seasons and feelings about these. We drew fabulous pictures in the background of our poems to go with our wonderful writing.

Primary 3

It has been a short week but we have been doing a lot in Primary 3. Summer Winter has come back from her long weekend and has done a good job of hanging around (literally). P3 have been teaching her all about rainbows and how they are made and we have been using lots of items to make our own rainbows indoors, the classrooms were so colourful! We have been writing and filming our very own weather reports as well and we can tell we have some budding weather presenters in our midst.

Pupils put on their navy hats in maths as we learned co-ordinates using Battleships. There was a cross-class competition before the pupils did their own and Miss Smith’s class were the clear winners.  There was lots of competition going on and lots of enthusiasm and this challenge has also formed part of the next fortnight’s homework.

Reminders:

Homework due 30th September

PE Kit:

Indoor: Wednesday (Mr Woodward)/ Thursday (Miss Smith)

Outdoor: Tuesday (Miss Smith)/ Thursday (Mr Woodward)

Please ensure that spelling and reading are being practised every night.

Can we also remind pupils to make sure names are going on school clothes as we are beginning to find items of clothing being left behind and they are not being claimed.

PE update

What a great week in PE.  We had another class who all remembered their PE kit – Well Done Primary 5B

Please remember PE kit on gym days as performance is so much better in comfortable PE clothing.

And please remember to hand in Aldi stickers so we can get to our 300 target- thanks in advance

Did you know the Rugby World Cup starts this weekend? Scotland play their first game on Sunday morning against Ireland.

P7

They learned about  rebounding the ball after a shot has been taken. They tried this in small group practice and then put the learning into 2 v 2 games.

P6

We got outside for Cross Country training and let the dice decide how far they were to run! And then they had to work out what pace we could run the distance. It’s 2 weeks until they take part in the cluster event at Dechmont Law so if they can try and run over the weekend that would improve their stamina even more.

P5

They had fun working with a partner to make letters of the alphabet with their bodies.  They took pictures using the ipads to see whether or not it looked really like the letter. Partners then gave advice on how to make the letter shape better.

P4

Today they recapped balances and then linked a balance with a roll. eg Front support to pencil roll There were so many ideas and it was great to be able to share these with a partner and sometimes with the whole class.

P3A

The class played games that helped with throwing and catching. They worked out that team mates should move closer to the person throwing the ball to make it a bit easier and ensure they can catch.

P3B

Today we  were learning how to cartwheel using benches, mats and dots on the floor. lots of the class can already cartwheel and they were challenged to manage it in a straight line , or along or over a bench.

Thanks

Mrs Ferguson

Primary 5

A short but busy week in P5.

The children have been writing rules to keep themselves safe when using the internet and websites. They were very knowledgeable about the dangers and what to do if they experience any difficulty. We would appreciate it if you could please keep speaking to your child/children about internet safety and what they should do if there is a problem. In P5G the children also got to design a phone/computer of the future. They came up with some very interesting designs. In P5M the children created posters to demonstrate their understanding of Internet safety rules.

In Topic the displays the children are creating about Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales are taking shape. They have been busy finding out facts about each country and trying to present them as imaginatively as possible. We were also able to incorporate ICT into this and many children now know how to copy a picture, paste it on a word document and then edit it. Each group will present their display to the class next week as they are now the experts on their chosen country.

Next Wednesday all of P5 are taking part in a Multi-sport Festival at DCHS. This is an outdoor event so please ensure the children are dressed for the weather. They will need trainers, joggers/trackies, sweatshirt, t-shirt and a waterproof jacket. You may also want to give them extra water to bring on that day. Please return the EE2 as soon as possible. Thank you.

You should have received the letter about the P5 open morning which will take place on Friday 25th October where the children will showcase their landmarks and you can taste a selection of food from Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales. Hopefully we will have lots of visitors for what promises to be an exciting morning.

Primary 6 13.9.19

Primary 6 have had another busy week.  In topic we have been learning about the conditions for children working in a mill at the start of the industrial revolution.  We have been quite shocked by how hard these children’s lives were.  We have also started looking at inventions and will shortly be starting our Big homework inventors challenge.  Details about this will be sent home next week.

In Maths we have been working on calculating numbers to 1 figure accuracy.  We have also completed our work on angles and can now successfully use a protractor to draw and measure angles.

In PE we have been working hard on our cross county running.  We have had a lot of success with this and most children have voluteered to take part in a cross country run at the high school next month.

Letters are going home today about our New Lanark trip at the end of the month, please look out for this and send it back to school as soon as possible.

Have a lovely long weekend.  We look forward to seeing the children return on Wednesday.

Primary One 13th September 2019

We have had another busy week in Primary One, continuing to learn the routines of the classroom and bringing ideas to our play areas.  We have been looking at healthy eating this week, starting by sorting foods into healthy and unhealthy.  In the areas around the classroom we have been coming up with fab ideas about how we can incorporate learning about healthy and unhealthy foods in our play.  In the writing areas we have been busy coming up with healthy menus and lists of foods that we like.  In the house corner we have been role playing preparing healthy foods, including some delicious sounding smoothies!  We have also been printing with apples and potatoes and have even opening our own fruit tuck shop.

In language this week we have been focusing on ‘s’ and ‘i’.  At home you can consolidate what we have been learning by looking out for these sounds when you are out and about and thinking of things that have these sounds in them.  Children can also have a go at writing these sounds.

In maths we have been looking at numbers 0-5 and counting forwards and backwards to 20, starting at different numbers.  This is something you could be practising at home or children can be challenged by going further than 20.

Reminders for next week-

Mon/Tues- Holiday

Homework will begin week beginning 23rd of September.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch by speaking to your child’s teacher at the end of the day or contact the school office.

Thank you for your continued support.

Primary 3 13.9.19

We have had quite a few letters from bossy Mrs Thunder this week, giving us our missions and tasks to help SummerWinter, our weather fairy. We had to learn about the water cycle and the scientific words. We then used our knowledge of the water cycle into a drama, where we became the water and had to think of movements to symbolise each stage. We had so much fun and filmed the whole thing to be used as a training video for SummerWinter.

Our next mission is to recreate a weather forecast in teams. We hope to do some green screen work with this and film it also. We can’t wait to see whether people have been watching the weather forecasts over the past few weeks to help with the language we should use. Hopefully there will be some information on this in our ‘Share It’ jotters.

We are impressing everyone with our number talks techniques and strategies for partitioning numbers and using it to add together numbers mentally. We need to practice subtraction, as this has proven a little more tricky.

Next week is a short week, however the children have asked to learn about rainbows and how they are created. We have some fun experiments planned to explain this.

Please remember we are on holiday Monday and Tuesday next week, and Share It jotters should be brought into school alongside reading books to be returned and replaced. New books will not be given out until old books are returned.

Thank you for your support have a great long weekend, we look forward to seeing you all when we return.

Miss Smith and Mr Woodward.

“Your deeds are your monuments”
( Wonder by R.J.Palacio)
Mr Browne’s percept this week created some interesting discussing in class. We thought August summed it up very well, “The things we do are the most important things of all…That’s why your deeds are like your monuments. Built with memories instead of with stone. “Remember to ask your P7 about precepts , can they remember the first one mentioned in the book ?
Continuing with our Japanese topic, we now have origami cranes decorating our classrooms, a symbol of peace inspired by the life of Sadako Sasaki . Please ask your P7 to tell you her story, it’s very memorable. We are delighted to announce that we are having visitors from the Japanese consulate very soon.
Within numeracy we are continuing with rounding and estimating. We began our Beat That numeracy challenge today and we will be doing this every Friday …. If you want scores to get better …practise, practise, practise!
