Primary 7

We celebrated World Book Day by having a shared reading session with our P1 buddies. The P7s did an imaginative job of bringing characters to life and those reading nonfiction delivered and discussed facts in a stimulating ways. Well done P7 !

Our rehearsals are going well and our choreography team are in full force!.

LEARNING SCRIPTS * LEARNING SCRIPTS* LEARNING SCRIPTS

Please help our P7s to learn their words. The countdown is on and we need pupils to be able to deliver their lines without relying on their scripts. Many thanks to those who have sent in show costumes already.

We are continuing with our investigation of shapes and we have been learning to describe the various properties of individual shapes . Please quiz you child and ask them to list a variety of properties of any household item .

We would like to remind everyone to return slips regarding our coffee afternoon next Tuesday. The event provides a great opportunity to ask question of the visiting Deans staff with regards to transition.

Primary 4 6.3.19

Hello everyone

This week has been a busy but fun one in Primary 4 so far. The children worked well in groups to make excellent mind maps about each of the 8 planets in the solar system. Each group focused on one planet and finding out particular facts about it including how many moons it had, how far the planet is from the sun and who the planet was named after. They then taught the rest of the class about their planet by presenting their mind map to the class. The class then took notes on each planet and each child now has a solar system book that they have designed themselves using their notes. Well done everyone 🙂

Tomorrow we are visiting P2 for World Book Day. Primary 2 will be sharing their favourite book with us and some activities that they have been doing in class. Primary 4 will also be sharing their favourite books with Primary 2. We will also share books that we have created in class.

Today was our last day of PE with Mrs Ferguson in Primary 4. We’d like to thank Mrs Ferguson for all she has taught the children this year. Starting next week both sessions of PE will take place with your child’s class teacher. Indoor PE will now be on a Monday and Outdoor PE will now be on Wednesday. We will remind the children of this and it will be written in their homework diaries next week.

We have begun the process of planning our assembly which will take place on Friday 22nd March. We look forward to inviting you to join P4 in exploring their learning related to our topic of Space. The children chose to learn about this topic and they are very enthusiastic about it. We can’t wait to show you what we have learned. Please look out for speaking parts or information about costumes in your child’s homework diary.

Reminders –
Your child has a moon record in their spelling homework jotter. Please encourage your child to look up at the sky each night and record what they can see. Remember – if the moon isn’t visible encourage your child to look at stars or other objects in the sky and look for anything interesting. There will be no spelling homework for two weeks so that your child can focus on this task. We will continue to work on spelling/phonics revision in class.

Red Nose Day celebrations begin next Thursday with a bake sale in the afternoon. There will be a talent show assembly held on Friday and a dress down day on Friday to raise money too.

Thank you for all of your support.

Miss Clark & Miss Donaldson

Primary 2 4.3.19

Primary 2 have a busy week of learning ahead!

We did some successful reports about the desert last week. The children had to think about an interesting title, draw a labelled picture and write facts under two or three subheadings. The children were full of facts and managed to create some fantastic reports which are now displayed in class. We are continuing our report writing this week about desert animals. We will be learning about camels and desert snakes!

In numeracy we are learning about estimating. The children will be trying to estimate roughly where a particular number falls on the number line. We will also be working out numbers half way between. To help support your child in this you could work on forward and backward number sequences up to 100.

Tuesday 5th March is Shove Tuesday so the children are going to be learning about Lent and Shrove Tuesday. We might even be able to indulge in some tasty pancakes!

Primary 2R need to continue to practise their assembly lines and songs. Letters will come home if your child requires a costume.

Homework is due on Thursday 7th March. The children will share their work with a friend in class.

On Thursday we will also be celebrating World Book day- Primary will be sharing their favourite book with Primary 4 boys and girls. So please remember to bring in your favourite book on Thursday!

Miss Rafferty and Mrs Muir

Primary 6

This week in Primary 6 we have been working very hard in the show which is coming along very well. Thank you very much for the effort that has been put in so far! We hope that everyone has been learning their lines and been busy singing the songs with the same enthusiasm at home as they are at school! It is starting to take shape and we are very appreciative of all the costume help the children have had so far, thanks very much!

In maths we have been continuing to work on decimals, fractions and percentages with a particular focus on making sure we link the three concepts together, working on division, division, division!  We have also continued to work on data handling with a focus on pie charts.

We have started our recount writing and this will be our focus for the rest of the term. In reading can we make sure that the literacy circles homework is complete by Mondays as they need to have completed the work to take part in meaningful discussion. Some of the conversations we have heard throughout the literacy circles work have been great and it’s nice to hear different views, lots of questions and enjoyment of the book.

There was lots of sportsmanship and good skills on show in our basketball games and it was a chance for teams to work together and encourage each other and it was lovely to see the games played in the right spirit.

And a massive congratulations to the hard work of the Euro-quiz team and Mrs Hunter for the effort they put in and they did us so proud in the actual competition, well done!

Reminders:

PE: Monday and Thursday

Spelling: Fridays

Literacy Circles: Mondays

Maths: Day dependant on class (unfortunately using Education City as a homework tool did not work)

Thanks, Mr Woodward and Mrs Hunter

Primary 7 – 01/03/19

What a jammed packed day we had on Tuesday when we had a visit from Homefront Histories! Our large hall was transformed into the 1940’s and the pupils were set a variety of challenges to complete. Our day was punctuated with a number of stops as we had to run to our air raid shelter as the siren sounded! We have added a selection of pictures below.

The pupils have made a good start of their WW2 challenge, with all topics selected. We would advise that if the children are using the internet for research purposes at home that they use a child friendly search engine such as Kiddle. Some of the images and information relating to WW2 subjects can be disturbing. Please monitor the sources used.

Letters have now been sent home with pupils who require specific items for their show costumes. Your help with this is greatly appreciated as always.

When we started our literature circle project, the pupils were given a choice of novels. We thought it would be a good idea for the pupils to share their thoughts of the novels they have chosen. It may entice others to read some of the alternative choices independently.

This week’s blurb was written by Dorka, Megan, Bendi, Heather and Nathan.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

By John Boyne

This full–of–drama novel puts you in the shoes of nine year old Bruno whose love of exploration gets him in all kinds of trouble. The question filled little boy gets the reader asking questions with him; why did we have to move? Why do we have a father called the commandant? What are all the people in striped pyjamas doing on the other side of the fence? Soon he meets a friend on the other side of the fence and even more questions come up.

EuroQuiz

Carmondean PS EuroQuiz Team, 2019

Our Primary 6 EuroQuiz team came up against stiff opposition from another 20 West Lothian Schools this morning at the West Lothian round of the national EuroQuiz at Howden Park Centre. The questions were very tough – most adults could NOT have answered quite a few of them – but the team put in a creditable performance and did not let us down. Many congratulations to the eventual winners, Linlithgow Primary School and the Runners up, Saint Nicholas Primary, Broxburn and a very big ‘Thank You’ to Mrs Hunter who took on the mammoth task of  training the team. Well done guys, we are proud of you!

Primary 4 1.3.19

Hello everyone

Thank you to all the parents, family members and carers that came into the P4 classes on Monday for our shared start and yesterday for our shared finish. It was so lovely to see so many of you working with your children on their learning in class. We hope you enjoyed your introduction to Number Talks and we hope to see you all soon.

This week in writing we have been continuing our report on the Apollo 11 mission and the first men to walk on the moon. The children have been very interested in learning about how this mission took place. They have turned into excellent reporters making sure they write down accurate facts for their readers. Next week we will be redrafting these reports into newspaper articles. We are sure the finished articles will look fantastic!

We have been enjoying watching the resurfacing work happening in the playground right outside our classroom window! We are hopeful this work will be finished by next week 🙂

On Monday the children began choosing their own words from our class novels for our word boost activities later in the week. The children were excellent at identifying tricky words that they would like to explore in more detail. Please ask your child the words that they have been learning about during word boost lessons.

Next week we will begin organising our class assembly that will take place on Friday 22nd March. Parents/carers will be able to attend this assembly and letters about this will be sent out in due course. Our assembly will centre around our space topic and any lines your child will need to learn will be sent home in homework diaries in the next week or so. Please look out for these.

Reminders –
PE days – Tuesday and Wednesday
Spelling – Due Friday
Reading pages by Monday

Thank you for your support. Have a lovely weekend.

World Book Day

World Book Day is taking place on Thursday 7th March.

To celebrate this day we will be pairing up with another stage in the school to ‘Share a Story’ so all we ask is that children bring one of their favourite books to share. Please pencil their name inside so we don’t get any books muddled up.

We recently handed out a book token which you can use in a variety of book shops that are supporting this campaign. The token is only valid until the end of March.

Do have a look on the ‘World Book Day’ website also for information about different authors and even share your own favourite childhood book with your child.

https://www.worldbookday.com/

Please note this will not be a dress down day.

Enjoy reading!

Primary 1 26.2.19

This week Primary 1 are very excited to see the playground resurfacing work happening outside our classroom. We have been watching the workers using machines to dig and move the old playground material and begin to flatten out the ground.
We are still enjoying the dinosaur interdisciplinary topic and have been learning about the Plesiosaur this week. The children have been writing a dinosaur fact file over the term, displaying their knowledge about each dinosaur we have studied. The Plesiosaur will be our final dinosaur in this book and we hope to be able to show you the finished fact files very soon. Next Wednesday Primary 1 will be visiting Our Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh. Permission slips and EE2 forms were given out last week and should be returned ASAP with £7 to ensure your child’s space. We are all very excited about the trip where we will be taking part in a ‘dinosaur’ workshop and visiting some of the exhibition.
In phonics, we have been learning the ‘ch’ sound this week. The children are becoming very skilled at identifying words containing new sounds and are learning to write these new words correctly.
In maths, we are learning to find half of a number. We have been giving children a number of objects for them to split into 2 equal groups. Any help you can give at home with this would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for all your continued support
Primary 1 teachers

Primary 2 25.2.19

Primary 2 are very excited to have the diggers arrive in the playground for the resurfacing. Our playtimes and lunch times have all changed but the children have adapted well to these. We can’t wait to see what the playground will look like once it’s finished!

Primary 2 have moved on in their topic and are beginning to learn about hot countries. We have discussed what we would need to pack to go to a hot country and today we are learning about the importance of protecting ourselves, especially our skin in the sun. We are designing our very own sun hats, discussing the importance/purpose of suncream and why sunglasses are used to protect our eyes. We are also going to be learning facts about the Desert and writing fact files about the desert in our writing lesson.

In Numeracy we are moving on from fractions in shapes and beginning to investigate the fraction of a number. We are going to be halving numbers within 20 to start and then hopefully progress onto bigger numbers. In Maths we are still learning about money but this week we are going to be focussing on working out change from 20p. We will be using our subtraction skills/strategies to work out the change.

Primary 2R have an assembly on 12th March. It is important that all the children practise their lines and look at the songs/dance on youtube. (Penguin dance, Lion song, Holiday song from Trolls).

P.E for P2R is a Tuesday and Wednesday

P.E for P2M is a Wednesday and Thursday

Homework has been issued today, along with new reading books. Homework is due 7th March.

Thanks, Miss Rafferty and Mrs Muir

Primary 6 Blog

Primary 6 participated in a Titanic Outreach Programme last week where we learnt about the history of the ship and re-enacted the Titanic’s fateful maiden voyage, taking on different roles and incorporating authentic artefacts. It was a great insight into what life was like at that time, how the ship was built and the journey until she sank.

We have also been practising hard for the school show and need to remember to learn our scripts and song lyrics.

Primary 6 have been busy planning and organising activities for Comic Relief on Friday 15th March, more details to follow soon.

Everyone has now been issued with an Education City username and password and should try to login at home. If you have misplaced your details, please see your teacher as somehomework will now be set using this learning platform.

Remember P.E kit is needed for Mondays and Thursdays.

Playground Re-surfacing

STOP PRESS: Playground re-surfacing work has not yet been completed, so these arrangements will continue till at least Monday, 04 March. Watch out for further updates.

From next Monday, 25 February, the outer playground of the school will be closed off for re-surfacing work to take place. As safetty of our children is paramount, there will be no entry to the school via the outer playground until this work has been completed (around 1 week if everything goes according to timetable). In the meantime, entry and exit to the school for children weill be via the fire-doors at the entrance to the new gym hall. At home-time, those children normally picked up by adults can be collected from 3.00 p.m. and the adults should enter the school by this same door, make their way to their chil/ren’s classroom/s and leave the school by the same route. Those children who walk home by themsleves will be dismissed by their class teachers from this same door at 3.20 p.m. (12.30 on Friday).

There will be changes to lunch-times and intervals as half our playground space will be unavailable and these arrangements will be reviewed on a day-to-day basis as the project gets underway. Thank you for your support during these major works in our school.

Primary 1 Update 20.2.19

Primary 7 – 15/02/19

We knew that we had a talented bunch of pupils but we didn’t realise their talents stretched to directing and producing …the ideas from the pupils for developing their show are superb! Keep the creative juices flowing , we love to see some improvisation!

Quite a few of our pupils have been caught without their ID cards this week . Their ‘fines’ have ranged from press ups to cleaning paint pots. We carried out research on war time rationing this week. The pupils wrote their own typical weekly meals plan and then worked out what they would not be able to have if rationing was still enforced. Many were horrified ( and we don’t think that’s an exaggeration ) of the lack of variety and the limited fruit supplies . Of course sugar and chocolate in particular was discussed but we thought we would start with the fruit reaction!

We are calculating percentages of amounts in numeracy, if you are shopping and spot any discounts offering percentages off, please ask your child to calculate it for you.

We are delighted with the number of pupils who have shared their family history regarding WW2 , thank you to all the parents , grandparents and great grandparents who have helped bring our project to life . Your input is very much appreciated.

We hope everyone enjoys their long weekend !

Primary 4 15.2.19

Hello everyone

It was lovely to see so many parents/carers at the consultation evenings on Wednesday and Thursday. We look forward to welcoming you into the classroom again on Monday 25th February at 9:05am for our shared start or on Thursday 28th February at 2:50pm for our shared finish. At these events you can work with your child in the classroom on some numeracy activities. We hope to see lots of you then 🙂

This week the children have been working hard to learn their 8 times table and their division by 8 facts. We’ve been using a great new song to help us which is linked below. The children love singing along! Some of us have begun to look at using the written method of division too and are working well. Any support you can provide your child with their times tables and division facts would be greatly appreciated 🙂

8 times table song

In our topic we have been looking at maps and photographs of Edinburgh some of which were created or taken over 100 years ago! We looked at some of the differences and similarities between the land, buildings and sanitation in those times and now. We noticed that there were no cars on the roads, the houses were built very closely together and many families stayed together in one room. We also noticed that many important landmarks such as the Forth Rail Bridge, The Scott Monument and Edinburgh Castle had been around for a long time!

In RME we have been learning that people’s beliefs can impact on the decisions that they make everyday. We have been focusing so far on Judaism and exploring what foods are Kosher and Non-Kosher. This has led to many interesting discussions.

Reminders –
The children are on holiday from school on Monday 18th February and Tuesday 19th February. We look forward to welcoming the children back on Wednesday.
There will be no homework given out next week.
Indoor PE will be on Wednesday for both classes.

Have a lovely long weekend.

Miss Clark & Miss Donaldson

Primary 1 Update 13.2.19

Hello All

In Maths this week the children have been practising reading the number words 1-10 along with learning doubles facts up to 10. Next week we will use this knowledge to progress onto addition facts near doubles.

Here are some games if they would like to practice:

  • Number word practice – http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/mathgames/earlymath/fruitShootNumbersWords.htm
  • Doubles practise – http://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/archeryDoubles/index.html

We have continued our Health education this week by discussing what is safe/ unsafe to go into our body and again discussed trusted adults.

In Literacy we have introduced the ‘th’ sound and are continuing with our tricky words.

Reminders:

PSA – Valentine’s Dress Down Day – Thursday 14th February – wear something red or pink and bring 50p.

Red Noses – Unfortunately we have run out of Red Noses for this years Comic Relief so these are no longer available from school.

February Holiday  – Please remember that children have a holiday on Monday (18.2.19) and Tuesday(19.2.19) next week and will return to school on Wednesday 20.2.19.

Primary 2 13.2.19

Primary 2 would like to say a huge thank you to all the parents/careers who came along to our soft start and finish. It was lovely to see you all and hopefully it gave you an insight into our number talks.

It was internet safety day on 5th February. The children were learning how to stay safe when using devices that connect to the internet. The children were talking about what to do if something pops up on their screen and we also spent quite a bit of time discussing the importance of not sharing personal information online. We had some super discussions!

In reading the children have been learning about visualisation and why it is important for the reader to be able to visualise characters and setting when there is no picture available. All the children heard a story about Mr Gum and they all managed to draw him and his house after hearing a short piece of text.

In maths we were working on missing subtrahends. The children were using their subtraction skills to find the missing numbers. Some children managed to get onto the challenge questions where there were a mixture of missing subtrahend and minuend questions.

We finished the week learning about rhythm in music with Mr Shanks and our french colours in class!

Please remember P.E kits and water bottles.

Homework for this week and next week will just be their reading. We will issue new homework tasks on Monday 25th February.
