Primary 6 23.03.17

Hello everyone!

We hope you’re having a great week. In P6 we have been working extremely hard on the school show. Yesterday was our dress rehearsal. We performed in front of the whole school and the teachers and everyone was very impressed! We are looking forward to showing you our finished performances next Wednesday at 1:30pm or 6:30pm. Tickets are still available from the school office.

Today we celebrated Earth Hour in class. We turned off our classroom lights and other electronic equipment and thought about what we appreciate most about our planet. We created love hearts which include a sentence and picture about our favourite thing about being outside. These are already looking fantastic and we can’t wait to see the finished products.

In writing, P6C have been writing about “The Magic Slide”. The children thought about where their magic slide would take them and what adventures they would go on whilst in their new and magical world. Miss Clark was very impressed with all of the children’s writing. Some of the children’s work will be entered into The West Lothian Young Writer of the Year Competition. Work will also be entered into the competition for children from P6KW. We will let you know how this goes 🙂

The children have been working hard in class on their Titanic Fact Files. These personal projects have been completed in class time and also at home. Please note that these projects are due in at the end of next week. Please encourage your child to complete their project at home and at school on time. If children need any materials to complete this then they can collect them from the classroom. Thank you for your support with this.

This week in P6

Hello everyone

We hope you had a lovely week.

This week Primary 6 have been continuing to rehearse for the P6/7 show “Alice in Wonderland”. Rehearsals are going very well so far and we are pleased that children have been practising their lines. We are now practising on the stage in the new hall and look forward to you seeing the performance in March. Please remember that it is expected that all children attend both the afternoon and evening performances. If there is a problem with this can you please let the school know as soon as possible, thank you.

The children have been continuing to work on their Titanic Fact Files in class. Children may also choose to bring these home to complete. You will find the criteria sheet inside their poly pocket. Please note this project is due in on the last week of term before the Easter Holidays.

In Health, the children have been learning about how to keep safe in different situations. Next week we will discuss peer pressure, the impact it can have on people’s lives and different strategies that we can use to avoid risky situations.

The P6 residential Dalguise is only 2 weeks away! Can all children who are attending this residential please make sure they hand back residential rules form and EE2 form (blue letters) to the school as soon as possible. If your child needs to take any medication to Dalguise a separate form will need to be filled out. Please contact the office for more details.

In PE we will be focussing on the skills of touch rugby whilst in the school hall. Outside, we will be creating new playground games for younger children in the school. Please remember that our PE days are Monday (indoor) and Thursday (outdoor) and that children should come properly prepared for both sessions.
Indoor PE Kit – shorts/trousers, t-shirt, indoor shoes
Outdoor PE Kit – old trousers, t-shirt, warm jumper/hoodie, trainers (no school shoes please).

Please also remember that indoor shoes must be worn by all children during time in the classroom/PE halls.

Primary 6 1.2.17

Hello everyone!

Primary 6 have enjoyed a very busy week so far. On Monday the children researched and created character profiles for their given passenger who was on board the maiden, and only, voyage of the Titanic. Today the children were able to develop their facts and created a biography of their Titanic passenger. The children worked extremely hard and we are very pleased with the results.

In Science, we have begun learning about The Human Body. Children learned about the main organs, their functions and locations inside our bodies. The children are looking forward to learning more about the different systems of the body including the respiratory, digestive and nervous systems.

On Monday and Tuesday we explored the celebration of Chinese New Year. Children explored the traditional story of Chinese New Year and some also created cards for family and friends in the lucky colour red. A big thanks to Cameron (P6C) who even taught some of us how to write and speak in mandarin!

On Monday, the school held its annual Burns Afternoon. As part of this we sang “You’re Welcome Willie Stewart” and Daisy and Aleigha recited their winning poems. A group of P6 and 7 pupils from the Senior Challenge Group organised and ran the whole afternoon. A huge well done to them for planning such an excellent and well received event!

This week is Assessment Week which means that children have been completing all of their work in a special assessment jotter. The children have been working extremely hard to complete their best work. Please look out for these jotters in your children’s jotters next week when you are in school for parent consultations. These will take place on Tuesday 7th February 5-7.30pm and on Wednesday 8th February 4-6.30pm. You can book your appointments online or through the school office.

This week, P6C have been given their new reading books. Each group should have read Chapter 1 by next Monday (Chapters 1-3 for the blue group) when we will start Literacy Circles. The children will be given a homework booklet on Monday with one piece of homework to complete each week for the following Monday. Please look out for these novels and booklets in your child’s homework folder beginning on Monday.

Primary 6 26.01.17

Happy Thursday!

P6 have had a very enjoyable week this week. In maths we have all begun to learn about fractions. The children have been working hard to share their prior knowledge with others. We are now beginning to find fractions of both shapes and numbers. Soon we will be working on equivalent fractions too. Please ask your child about their learning.

This week we had our very own Burns Supper! We had the chance to try haggis, vegetarian haggis, cheese, oatcakes and shortbread. Our haggis was piped into the classroom and Mr Woodward recited “Tae a Haggis”. Mrs Wylie also gave the “Immortal Memory”. Max read out the Selkirk Grace before we ate and we sang “You’re Welcome Willie Stuart” and the traditional version of “Auld Lang Syne” Our favourite part of the supper though was when Logan, Gregor and Tyler read out the boys “Toast to the Lasssies” and Luci replied by reading the girls “Toast to the Laddies”. The boys and girls split up into different classrooms to write a collective speech to the lads and the lassies. The aim of the speech was to compliment each other but was also meant to be a bit cheeky! Mrs Wylie & I thought the final results were marvellous!

We are continuing to work hard on our Titanic topic. We will begin work on our classroom wall display on Tuesday, painting the characters we have been given thinking carefully about the types of clothing first, second and third class passengers would have worn.

Mr Woodward has begun working with Miss Clark’s class. He will be teaching P6C about The Bible in RME, Human Body in Science, more information about The Titanic and much more.

Hello everyone!

Primary 6 have had an enjoyable week so far. On Monday the children loved using Google Cardboard to explore far away places. They used virtual reality technology to explore the International Space Station and the moon (even looking at what experts think the moon will look like in the future!) They also explored The Great Wall of China and the Colosseum in Rome! The children had great fun and learned lots at the same time 🙂

Our Titanic topic is now well underway. On Monday we watched a documentary about the sinking of the Titanic which revealed that some new evidence has been uncovered in relation to a fire below deck before the ship hit the iceberg. The children were very interested in the findings! Every child has now been given their very own character who was on board the Titanic when it sank. The children researched their character using the website: https://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/
They used this information to create character profiles detailing their age, occupation, class and even their ticket numbers! This really brought the topic to life for us all!

Next week much of our learning will be centered around Scotland. On Tuesday afternoon the children will take part in a Traditional Burns Supper complete with the food, songs, poems and rhymes associated with this celebration. The children can wear tartan to school on Tuesday.

Next week P6C will be joined by another teacher for a period of 5 weeks to work alongside Miss Clark. His name is Mr Woodward and we look forward to welcoming him to Carmondean 🙂

Primary 6 04.01.17

Happy New Year Everyone!

We hope that you had a fantastic festive period. We were very happy to welcome the children back to school today and hear about their exciting holidays.

This week is the start of a very busy term for Primary 6. Today we began learning songs with Mr Platt for the P6/7 Show which this year is “Alice in Wonderland”. Some children have chosen to audition for bigger roles in the production. Everyone will find out their role within the show in the next couple of weeks. Please look out for scripts in your child’s school bag. We appreciate all of the support you give children to prepare for school shows at home.

We will be continuing to work on “A Tale Unfolds” for the first few weeks of this term until our class film has been completed. Once this is completed we will begin work on our new Interdisciplinary topic: The Titanic.

This week the children have also been reflecting on their own progress last term and will set themselves new goals for what they would like to achieve both in and outwith school in 2017. Please discuss these targets with your child.

Primary 6 13.12.16

Hello everyone

Primary 6 are enjoying getting into the festive spirit throughout the last week. As well as our Christmas Party the children enjoyed watching the P2/3 Nativity and the P1 Nativity. Well done to all of the Primary 6 children who took on narration roles at both the P2/3 Nativity and the Nursery Christmas Concert. They were a fantastic help to staff and pupils.

This week we will be working more on our “A Tale Unfolds” Topic, learning more about script writing and stage direction. We are looking forward to filming more soon! This topic will carry on into the New Year and we look forward to finishing our film.

A letter should have been sent home with your child on Friday detailing costume requirements for the P6 Assembly which is this Friday. If your child has no clothing suitable for their role please ask them to let their teacher know and we will try to accommodate them in school. On Thursday the children are looking forward to watching a pantomime that is visiting the school. The children also have the opportunity to attend the local church next Tuesday to partake in a variety of activities related to the Christmas story. The session is entitled: “Bubblegum and Fluff!”

This will be the last blog post of the year. School will resume again on Wednesday 4th January for another busy and exciting term. Next term we will finish our “A Tale Unfolds” topic, start to learn about the Titanic and take part in the P6/7 School Show.

Hello everyone!

We hope you’re all having a good week. Primary 6 have had a fantastic week so far. On Monday we gathered together for our Primary 6 Christmas Party. We listened to lots of Christmas music, played some festive games, danced the Dashing White Sergeant and ate some delicious party food. We hope everyone had fun 🙂

We have been continuing to practise our P6 Assembly which is next Friday. A letter will be sent out shortly about clothing the children may need to bring in to wear for the assembly. You will receive a paper copy of this letter later on in the week and it will also be posted on the blog. We appreciate your support.

In RME we have begun learning about the Christmas story and the symbols associated with the Nativity story and the Christian religion in general. The children are beginning to understand the importance of symbols in our everyday life and are about to embark on the challenge of creating a symbol that represents our class – stay tuned for more! 🙂

Hello everyone!

Primary 6 are having a very busy and productive week so far. Our “A Tale Unfolds” topic is well underway and the children are participating very enthusiastically. We have been exploring different camera angles and have been using these whilst filming others to great effect. We’re looking forward to the rest of the topic!

The children have also begun rehearsing hard for their assembly which is next Friday. Please continue to encourage them to practise their words at home.

In maths both classes have been continuing to work on our multiplication skills. We have been doing this through a variety of activities including whole class multiplication challenges. Well done to Murray & Louisa who are the current champions in Miss Clark’s maths class. Keep practising!

Please note that the children no longer have indoor PE with Miss Inglis on a Wednesday. From now on P6 PE days will be:
Monday – Indoor Gym with Miss Clark & Mrs Wylie.

Hello everyone

Here are some quick reminders about upcoming events in Primary 6.

Big Homework
The children have all been given a piece of big homework to complete for Friday 9th December. They are to present information about a current news story that has taken place in a European country in the form of a class talk. The children can use powerpoint, cue cards or a poster to help them to communicate their information. If your child needs any materials or support from school then they should please let their teacher know as soon as possible.

P6 Assembly
Primary 6 have begun practising for their assembly which will take place on Friday 9th December. Please note that this assembly is NOT open to parents/carers and is a school only assembly. Your child should have received song words home with them today. Please encourage them to learn the words to the song. Also, every child will have a speaking part for the assembly and this will be given home with them by the end of this week. These should be memorised by Monday 5th December at the latest. We are sure our assembly will be a great success! Thank you for your support with this.

Christmas Fair
The school Christmas Fair takes place on Friday 2nd December from 6pm-8pm. Tickets are available from the office or upon entry on the night. We would love to see as many children and parents there as possible. Please note: If your child is in the choir you do not need to pay for a ticket for them as they will be singing on the night.

P6 Christmas Party
Yes, it really is that time of year already! The Primary 6 Christmas Party will take place on the afternoon of Monday 5th December. Your child can bring party clothes to school in the morning to get changed into or can be collected at lunchtime and come back in their party clothes at 1:10pm. We are all looking forward to it 🙂

Primary 6 11.11.16

Hello everyone

Primary 6 have had an excellent week this week.

On Tuesday we went outdoors to do some art work. We used natural materials from the playground like different coloured leaves, berries, twigs and stones to create symmetrical pieces of art. The children worked very well together in groups and we think the finished products are fantastic! You’ll see some examples of the children’s work below.

In Outdoor PE we have began to learn the skills of hockey. This week we learned how to control and pass the ball and in the coming weeks we will be playing small team games together.

Next week we will begin work on our new topic of “A Tale Unfolds”. The children will be working in small groups to create a story that they will eventually write a script for and then perform. We can’t wait to start this project and we are sure that the finished results will be fantastic.

Your child should have brought home a copy of their latest big homework challenge. It is due in on Friday 9th December. Children should plan a short class talk about a current European news story. They can do a powerpoint or poster to accompany their talk. If your child needs any resources from the school (paper, pens, colouring pencils, use of laptop etc.) then they should let their class teacher know as soon as possible.

A quick reminder that PE days are Monday (outdoor PE) and Wednesday (indoor PE but children should also come prepared for being outdoors). Please ensure that your child brings appropriate clothing and footwear to school on these days.

Maths and Spelling homework is handed out weekly. Please look out for them on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Hello!

We have had a very busy week in Primary 6. On Monday we started to learn a song for a Scottish Assembly which will be taking place when our ERASMUS+ visitors arrive in a couple of weeks time. We are learning “You’re Welcome Wullie Stewart” a song written by Robert Burns about the arrival of his best friend. The children have received the words home with them. Please encourage them to learn their words by Monday.

We have started our new Interdisciplinary Topic of Europe. The children have been using Atlases to complete a variety of tasks to help them to gain a better understanding of the geography of the continent. The children are now working in groups using their research skills to create a poster about a European Country for our classroom display. The children have made a great start to these posters and Mrs Kelly and I are looking forward to seeing the finished products! We will also be using our writing session next week to write letters to our European Visitors; telling them about our country and asking them questions about their own. We are looking forward to our visitors reading our letters and replying!

All groups in maths have begun work on multiplication and division in class. Please encourage your child to practise their times tables at home as knowledge of these facts can help them to access many other more complex areas of maths in the future. Hello

Thank you to all the children who handed in very creative and well thought out inventions to school today. We can’t wait to look at them in closer detail! Our Inventions Showcase will be on Wednesday 12th October. Parents and families are able to visit the P6 classrooms to view the inventions from 9:45-10:45am and 2:15-3:15pm. Please enter and exit the school through the P4/5 entrance.

Parents’ nights are on Wednesday 12th (5-7:30pm) and Thursday 13th (4-6:30pm). We look forward to seeing you all to discuss your child’s progress.

Please note that next week our Indoor PE day has changed for one week only. This week PE with Miss Inglis will be on Thursday. Miss Clark’s class should not come to school dressed in their PE kit as they do on Wednesdays as our time for PE on Thursday is later in the day. Outdoor PE will be on Monday as normal.

Primary 6 – 29.9.16

Hello everyone

We have just arrived home from a fantastic trip to New Lanark today. The children all represented Carmondean extremely well and thoroughly enjoyed the day’s activities. Please keep an eye on the School Ethos (posted to this blog weekly) to see some photographs from our trip. The children were treated to a guided tour of New Lanark, visited the historic school house and went on a ride exploring New Lanark’s past. We will explore what the children learned further next week through creating “Trip Advisor” style reviews of their experience!

This week both classes have been furthering their knowledge in maths. The children have been learning about 2D shape and place value in number lessons. Please ask your child about their knowledge at home. Homework is handed out weekly so please look out for this also.

Please remember that this term’s Big Homework is due in next Friday (7th October). The children are to design and create their own inventions that can assist, develop or aid people in the 21st century. The children will display their inventions at an “Inventions Showcase” the following week. Parents will also be invited and you will receive letters about this event shortly.

Dates for the diary

Wednesday 5th October – P6 Cross Country Event. All to attend. Children to bring packed lunch and warm comfortable clothing suitable for running outdoors in any weather.

Friday 7th October – Invention Homework due in.

Primary 6 15.9.16

Hello everyone

Primary 6 have had a busy week learning more about the Industrial Revolution. The children learned about the move for many people from the countryside into cities and the problems that were created by cramped tenement housing. We then created our own “City Landscape” at the back of the Primary 6 classrooms which looks fantastic!

In writing this week the children created their own “magic box” and thought about all the magical and exciting things they could put into their box. The children then worked very hard to write fantastic poetry based on their boxes. Well done!

In ICT, Mr Shanks introduced both classes to software called “Kodu”. This software enables us to create our own simple computer games using some visual programming language. The children thoroughly enjoyed becoming familiar with this software; controlling their own characters and developing their own unique worlds. We look forward to learning more in the coming weeks.

You should receive a letter today about our trip to New Lanark. We are planning on making this visit on Thursday 29th September. The cost of this trip is £5.50 per child and should be returned to the school with a completed EE2 form as soon as possible. Children should come prepared with their own packed lunch as we are not expected to arrive back to school until around 2:30pm. If any parents with a full disclosure are able to help out with this trip then please let the office know as soon as possible. Thank you in advance!

A quick reminder that this weekend is a holiday weekend. The children should return to school on Wednesday prepared with PE kit and appropriate shoes for participating in Cross Country.

Hello everyone!

We hope you’re having a lovely week. Primary 6 have had an extremely busy week working hard as always!

This week the children began working with our maths teacher on circles. The children learned about the different parts of a circle and now know the difference between the radius and the diameter. The children then used a compass to create their own circle patterns and now are using lots of different colours to decorate them. We think they will look great on our maths wall.

Also this week we wrote short descriptive passages based on “The Village” pictures we created last week. We were so impressed with the quality of the children’s work and their use of descriptive language – including similies!

In Health, we have begun learning about Internet Safety and the importance of staying safe online. Please ask your child about the safety strategies they have learned this week.

Primary 6 – End of week 2

Hello everyone

Thank you to everyone who came to the Meet the Teacher event on Tuesday evening. It was lovely to meet you all.

On Monday we begin our normal timetable and homework schedule. PE will take place on a Monday (outdoor) and a Wednesday (indoor with Miss Inglis). Due to cross country training children may also participate in PE outdoors on a Wednesday too. Please remind your child to bring appropriate kit & footwear on these days so that they can take part in PE lessons fully.

Spelling homework will begin this week. We would like to ask that spelling jotters be covered in paper as soon as possible please. Both reading & maths homework will begin next week (wb. 12th September). Thank you for your support with this.

*Special note for Miss Clark’s class* – This week can you please bring into school your favourite fiction story book. We will begin work on your books in class next week. Thank you!

Last week we started our new topic “The Industrial Revolution”. The children have shared what they already know and what they want to learn through this topic. The children also listened carefully to a story about a small 19th century village and how it functioned before the impact of the Industrial Revolution. The children listened extremely carefully in order to draw their version of The Village based entirely on hearing the story. We can’t wait to display the children’s work in the classroom.

This week in maths we will begin work on place value and shape. Please ask your child what they have been learning.

Last week Mr Shanks came into our classes to use a new online discussion tool called spiral. This enabled the children to discuss answers to questions related to the Rio 2016 Olympics, type their own response into a netbook computer and have them all show up on the Smartboard! We were all very impressed by this use of technology. This week, Miss Clark & Mrs Wylie will attempt to use this technology too during our first lesson on Internet Safety – wish us luck!

Hello from Primary 6!

Hello everyone!

We hope you have all had a lovely, relaxing summer holidays. We have had a very busy first week back in Primary 6 and we are thoroughly enjoying getting to know all of the children. Luckily, we seem to have so many hard working, confident & responsible individuals in Primary 6 so Mrs Kelly, Mrs Wylie and I are sure that this will be a great year.

This week we have been discussing in detail what kind of classrooms, classmates and teachers we would like to have. We have created our own class charters which show us how to respect our rights and the rights of others. We have also been exploring the SHANARRI wheel. SHANARRI stands for Safe, Healthy, Active, Nurturing, Achieving, Respected, Responsible & Included. We explored what we can do and what adults in Carmondean can do to help us to feel respected and included.

PE Days
Both classes will have Indoor PE on a Wednesday with Miss Inglis this term. The children will be taking part in cross country runs and related activities. Sometimes the children will be working outside in the playground so please send your child to school with appropriate footwear for this. Miss Clark’s class should try to come to school in their PE kit on a Wednesday if possible as they have PE at 9am.
Both classes will have Outdoor PE on a Monday. Please ensure your child comes prepared for PE on both days.

Meet the Teacher is next Tuesday 30th August from 4:30-5:30pm. We look forward to meeting as many parents as possible. Meet the Teacher is a chance to chat informally with your child’s class teacher, see your child’s classroom and view some of the work we have completed in the first week of term.

Important information for Primary 7!

We hope Primary 7 have had a great transition week up at Deans Community High School. We can’t believe how quickly this term has gone and that our time with you is almost at an end. Although we only have a week and a half left at school we still have so much to do P7! So we look forward to welcoming you back to school on Monday with a hard-working and motivated attitude.

Some important points to remember:
– Please continue to practise our Leavers assembly songs over the weekend. You should know all of the words by Monday.
– If you have any lines to learn for the assembly please also continue to practise them.
– If you are part of the drama section of the assembly – please begin to think about your costumes! Please don’t feel the need to buy anything new but feel free have a rummage in your cupboards over the weekend.
– Our dress rehearsal is on Thursday afternoon when we are performing in front of the Primary 2 and 3 classes.
– Our Leavers Assembly is on Monday 27th June beginning at 1:30pm. Parents & other adults – please let the office know if you are planning on attending.
– P7 Prom is next Tuesday (28th June!) All of the teacher invites you created have been distributed. If you still need to buy a ticket or would like professional photos taken at the event please let the office know next week.

Hello everyone

We have been very busy this week getting organised for our Leavers Assembly. The children have been practising hard and can’t wait for their parents and the rest of the school to see the final performance. The Leavers Assembly will be on Monday 27th June beginning at 1:30pm. If you have not requested tickets yet you can do so at the office next week. We hope to see you all there!
Children should ensure that they spend next week memorising any lines that they have and also learning the words to the three songs that we will be performing. It is vitally important that the children practise next week as we will have our first performance in front of an audience (the Primary 2s and 3s) on Thursday 23rd June.

Next week the majority of the children will take part in a transition week at Deans Community High School. The children should come to Carmondean in the morning for a normal 8:50am start. Miss Farren & I will then walk the children up to DCHS for a 9:30am start. Children should wear their Carmondean uniforms. On Monday however the children will be taking part in the “Hurricane Challenge” and should wear trainers and bring a waterproof jacket in case of bad weather. The children should go straight to Deans on Tuesday-Friday mornings for a 8:35am start. We are sure that the children will represent the school and themselves very well and that they will enjoy getting to meet their new classmates. We look forward to hearing how they get on.

On Friday 24th June the school is hosting a Technologies Open Morning. You will have the opportunity to come into the school to look at your children’s best work that they have chosen to put in their learning journals. You will then also have the opportunity to go to the school hall and look at the new technology equipment that the school has invested in. Parents of children in P7F can visit the school between 9:30-10:30am. Parents of children in P7C can visit the school between 11:15am-12:15pm. We would love to see as many of you there as possible.

Children who are attending other High Schools and are not going to the DCHS transition week will be able to complete a variety of work related to our Leavers Assembly. They will also have the opportunity to work with other teachers and younger classes in the school, assisting with their learning.
