Dance in Class P.E.
Over the past week, we have been putting together a class dance with an African feel! It was a beautiful day so we took our rehearsals outside and managed to run through all the steps as a class. They’ve picked it up really quickly. In the afternoon Fearne’s Mum, Mercyline, met us in the multi court to show us some moves that would be typical in the Sengenya dance and then she helped us add some of these movements into the group sequences that the children created. They had some lovely, creative ideas! We’ll record these dances tomorrow and hope to share our work at the end of term. A big thank you to Mercyline for giving up her time for us. 😊
World War II
Our topic this term has been World War 2. We have been finding out about The Blitz, blackouts, evacuations and what life was like for people in the UK at that time.
The pupils have also been working in small groups to research a chosen aspect of World War 2. The groups have chosen to research:
- The Soviet Union
- Anne Frank
- Women in World War 2
- New Inventions/Products in World War 2.
- Adolf Hitler
Everyone has been working so hard on their presentations and we are looking forward to sharing what we have found out with each other next week!
Some pupils have also been conducting some further research at home, finding out about their own family members who lived during the time of World War 2. We are going to share these on Monday and Tuesday in the last week of term. I can’t wait to see and hear what they found out!
Can you tell what it is yet?
After three days of careful painting, we finally finished our collaborative mystery picture! It was exciting to piece together each part of the puzzle and discover what we had made!
Welcome back!
We’re only a couple of days in and already we have been busy reconnecting with each other through various games and crafts. This week we started a collaborative painting project. Each person has a grid to paint and when all the grids come together it will reveal a mystery picture! Watch this space to find out what it is!
We have also enjoyed making some new bookmarks in preparation for getting back into our daily reading in class. There were even families of bookmarks made…of all sizes!
During our online learning, we began to look at stars and constellations as part of our Space topic. We had fun today finding out about the Zodiac sign our birthdays fall under and what that constellation looks like. Can you guess what they are?
Musical Performances and End of Term
What a superb end to our first term! Over the past two days, the children have worked brilliantly in groups, pairs and on their own to carry out research on their chosen life cycle. We look forward to sharing our finished displays and information next term! We enjoyed a brisk walk around the Boddam loop road during our class P.E. time today and finished off with a short musical concert from our cello and violin players. It was fabulous to hear them play so beautifully and with great confidence!
A huge well done to all the children for handling this first term so well! We are extremely proud of you. Have a relaxing holiday!
Family Game
We are enjoying all of the posts coming in for our poem about an Outdoor Classroom. Keep them coming!!
In the Henderson household, we have been playing lots of board games together as a family. We didn’t get a chance to complete our Maths games in class, so I challenge you to use your imaginations to create a game for your family instead! Perhaps you would like to teach someone in your family some of the French words and phrases we have been revising…?
It could be a…
- board game (will you need counters, dice/spinners, cards…?)
- card game
- physical game (will you need music, instruction cards…?)
- spelling/maths game for younger brothers or sisters
Remember you will need to include instructions too. We’d love to see examples of your games, so you are welcome to send us a photo/video to the school email address. dunrossness@shetland.gov.uk
Have fun!!
Christmas Cards … and Poetry
I hope you have found your lovely Christmas card that was sent home today! This class enjoy craft work and created really striking winter tree paintings for their cards.
We also used these pictures to inspire us to do some creative writing. We went out into the nature garden to look at the winter trees and gather words, phrases and ideas for our work. Back in class, we looked at various free style poems to give us more inspiration before creating our own. The poems needed to sound as if we were having a conversation with the tree. They needed to have questions and repetition within it and they were not to rhyme. This proved harder than we thought! Some excellent pieces were created, very quickly. Here are some of my favourite lines…
Dream and dream until the sun shines through to wake you up, winter tree. (Amy)
Tall and elegant, but dead looking inside so bare and brown. (Fergus)
Will your leaves ever return? Lying dormant on the ground but in the summer you’re tall and proud. (Magnus)
Trees do you hear me? How do you feel? What do you see? Dusted with frost. (Fiona)
Oh winter tree, how do you survive the harsh, harsh cold winter? (Matthew)
Oh cold frosty tree, how do you stand so strong and proud in the strong winter breeze? (Hannah)
I’ll speak to you next year but now it’s time to sleep, sleep, sleep. (Isabel)
No reply came from the winter tree. Then I wonder… Is he alive? (Robbie)
The newly fallen snow is…hair. It’s winter, tree. (Ellie)
I don’t know how you can stand so tall and proud in this bitter wind. (Kelsi)
Are you cold? Surely you are! Will your leaves ever come back? You’re so naked. Soon your leaves will return. Just keep dreaming and dreaming. (Liam)
Oh tree so cold, bent and old. Your pine cones so spiky. Do you feel it if you bend so bold? (Kathryn)
Winter tree, your leaves have fallen. You’re covered in a cloak of snow. You are freezing in the bitter temperatures. (Bella)
How do you live outside in the cold lifeless winter, tree? You must have thick skin. (Bobby)
You dream about the summer and the flowers and the grass and how you’ll have leaves at last. (Ava)
Winter tree, how can you live like this…in the vast winter wind where your life has faded…? (Abi)
Yes, yes, yes! I can get cold on the outside but in the inside I can feel happiness. (Anders)
Do you want my jacket? Wait, no, that strong, insulating bark of yours will surely keep you warm. (Evie)
Mum said you’re dreaming of spring with your green, vibrant leaves but I can not see it! (Fearne)
Bare, chilly and frosty, you need some warmth. Dream of spring, summer, flowers and the sun. (Tory)
Your fantastic green leaves, gone but when summer comes around, you will be remade and beautiful once again. (Koll)
That’s too many questions! Let me stand here until spring! (Hayden)
Are you ever going to take off in this winter breeze? Swaying in the wind, bare and cold. (Kayla)
The full versions of our poems will be displayed in school next term. Please feel free to come and have a read in the new year!
Achievement Talks – Pink Fluffy Unicorns
Today the class were delighted to have another installment of our class achievement talks.
Mia shared her success in class spellings – Mia has really improved with her spelling this year and it is lovely to see that she is making use of this in her written work too.
Emma told us about her first trial of doing the hurdles at the athletics track in town. Her uncle had spent time at the track teaching her how to do it, now she’s hoping to go on the waiting list.
Tory demonstrated his ability to perform a handstand-walk. He’s been working on it for a few weeks and still has time to practice but he has come on a long way.
Koll showed us a video of him throwing playing cards and getting it stuck in an apple. To prove how hard it is we all had a go at throwing our own cards – it’s not that easy.
Frankie shared with the class that he was very excited to have his very own Poochon puppy arriving on the plane on Sunday. He is delighted that his parents have trusted him with this responsibility.
P5/6 CLASS ASSEMBLY ON WW1
Today was the big day for all of us in P5/6, time to share our learning with friends, family and the whole school. There were a few nerves building as the day progressed and much relief when it was all finished – also some pleasure in being able to reduce some parents and staff members to a tear at the end!
Isabel, Jay and Alex sharing details of how WW1 started.
Emma, Carla and Tory sharing details of women in WW1
Robbie, Ronan and Robert shared information about life in the trenches.
Kelsi, Mia and Evie talked about some key Shetlanders from WW1
Amy, Koll and Frankie spoke about the battle of the Somme, where Shetland suffered the biggest loss.
Hayden, Isaiah and Lucien shared some details of the weapons used in WW1.
Becca, Hannah and Daniel shared their thoughts on the end of the war and our learning.
Ellie, Evie, Hannah, Isabel and Robbie all shared information about their own connections to WW1. This was a lovely addition to the assembly and all of the pupils had found this information in their own time!
Quiz time (Abi, Ellie and Kayla): time to check if the audience had been paying enough attention to the assembly… Well done audience!
Getting ready to sing “Keep the Home Fires Burning” – we are blessed with such beautiful singers in P5/6
Soloists: Emma, Evie, Hannah, Tory, Kelsi, Abi, Becca and Carla.
Quartets: Robbie, Lucien, Hayden and Koll and Ellie, Kayla, Jay and Frankie.
I can honestly say that I could not have been more proud of all of the P5/6 pupils. They have put so much thought and effort into this. They have been very instrumental in deciding how we should do it, what should be included, all slides and scripts were prepared by themselves too.
We have thoroughly enjoyed the topic of WW1, both the pupils and myself, and I believe that was clear in the presentation of their assembly this afternoon.
Well done P5/6, you should all be super proud of yourselves – have a well deserved break over the weekend!
