Fairyland Castles at Toward Primary School

Toward PS Castle GerrishPrimary 1 to 3 Pupils of Toward Primary have been working very hard to rebuild Fairyland in their classroom with help from the Friendly Dragon. Dunoon Primary School Choir wow the crowds at Daffodil Tea!

DPS Daffodil Tea 1st May 2015 2Dunoon Primary School hosted their Annual Daffodil Tea on Tuesday 28th April. The Choir sang a selection of their favourite songs. The afternoon show was well attended by Senior Citizens from our local Community and the children presented a well rehearsed selection of songs e.g. Skyscraper Wean, Under the Sea and Colours of the Wind. The varied song choices and actions to the songs gave the delighted audience ‘the wow factor’.

St Andrews Digital Art Programme Creates a Dragon Invasion!

St Andrew's dragon at mountstuartPupils at St Andrew’s Primary have been helping to pilot digital art projects using paint.net. They have been improving their creative technology skills to search, store, manilpulate images and tell stories. St George’s Day on Thursday inspired a dragon invasion across Bute for P4/5. This dragon was spotted by Erin, of Mrs Spencer’s P4/5 class, on the lawn at Mount Stuart another was seen by Emma attacking an ogre at the Winter Gardens!

On Wednesday 22nd April 2015 Toward and Innellan Primary schools went to Sky Academy Skill Studio in Livingston to make a news report on Natural Disasters. We got to use green screens, professional cameras (worth £60,000) and wear costumes. There were four studios each working together to make a news report. There were eight roles in each studio – Producer, Director, Scriptwriter, Camera operator, Reporter, Eyewitness, Expert and Editor.

Ardrishaig PS BarrowbandDid you know broccoli comes from Italy? Or that carrots came from Afghanistan? Primary 1-4 pupils in the Mid Argyll area learned these and many other interesting facts about fruit and vegetables thanks to The BarrowBand. The BarrowBand’s goal is to ‘inspire a new generation of people (especially children) to love, understand and demand fruit and vegetables as part of their diet and lives.

Having completed and sent off their designs for the Scottish Engineering Leaders Award for STEM 2014/15 where they had been challenged to interpret the question “If you were an engineer in Scotland – what would you do?” the children were delighted to hear back from the organisers of the competition.

A feast of Local Foods at Salen Primary Health Day

Health Day Salen PS2Primary 6 pupils from Salen, Lochdonhead and Ulva Primary schools treated all staff and pupils to a lunch of locally produced food as the highlight of Health Day where the theme was Healthy Eating. They took over the school kitchen for the morning and, under the guidance of sous chef Michael Shannon from the Western Isles Hotel, assisted by Iona, and Eilidh and Debbie from the school kitchen, they prepared and served a feast of wonderful Mull produce which had been kindly donated by local producers.

Dalintober Gets messy

SAL MESSY CHURCH COURIERPrimary 5 at Dalintober had their very own Messy Church at Lorne and Lowland Church. Rachael, Marie and Jean had organised lots of interesting activities to link with the topic of Easter. A puppet helped to tell us the story of Easter, while vigourous movement was needed to join in the songs. This was followed by a variety of messy crafts plus an egg hunt. Finally, everybody sat together to enjoy lunch and a chat about the morning’s Messy Church.

Strone PS Parents Evening 1 April 2015Last Thursday, Parents of Strone Primary School were invited to attend our Open Learning Evening, where pupils had a chance to show off their learning this term. As a culmination of this term’s Tuesday Afternoon Skills Clubs, Parents were treated to delicious Rocky Road and Fruit Kebabs prepared by the Cooking Club, a guided tour of our Pop Art Gallery by the pupils involved in the Art Club, and they were also able to see examples of work displayed by the Science and Technology and Music Clubs.

Spring Tea at Garelochhead PS

Garelochhead PS Spring Tea1Yesterday, families and friends of Garelochhead PS were treated to tea, coffee and biscuits to celebrate the start of British summer time. Lots of people turned up and were entertained during the event with songs from all the classes and an Easter ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire’ created by P7. Although the winner didn’t get a million pounds, they did receive some homemade Millionaire’s shortbread.

Primary 7s at St. Mun’s Show Off Their Inventions

St Muns STEM  1The pupils of St. Mun’s Primary have just completed their designs ahead of the deadline for the Scottish Engineering Leaders Award for STEM 2014/15. The Awards challenged Primary and Secondary school pupils across Scotland to research and interview inspiring engineers, providing them with a fantastic opportunity to engage with real engineers who could convey the importance of STEM in their daily working lives.

St. Joseph’s a Winner at Showing Racism the Red Card!

St Josephs RED CARD 1Nicholas, a P6 pupil at St. Joseph’s Primary School in Helensburgh recently attended Hampden Park with his mum and teacher, Miss Trainer for the winner’s day out following the ‘Show Racism Red Card Competition’. Show Racism the Red Card (Scotland) is a charity that promotes anti-racism through education. The aim of their campaign is to combat racism through education and the use of footballers as role models.

Kirn’s P7 Great Spaghetti Marshmallow Challenge!

KIRN PS P7 Challenge 1It was Open Day in P7 and we invited parents, grandparents and carers to come in and join us with the Spaghetti Marshmallow Challenge!
Each team was made up with P7 children, one or two parents or helpers, 100 sticks of raw spaghetti, 20 marshmallows and just 30 minutes. The challenge was to build the highest tower using just these materials, plus lots of communication skills, teamwork, determination, creativity, problem solving and speed!

Islay Schools Band Concert

Islay HS School bandIslay High School Band, Primary School Band and Ceol na Cloinne our P3/4 Training Band, held a fantastic concert on Thursday 19th March. Our special guests were Coisir Og Gaelic Ile, Ella Edgar Dancers and Islay High School Pipers. A great night was had by all, there was a lot of new exciting music from all bands not to mention soloists from the Primary band and High School Band, all of whom put on great performances. A great night was had by all, well done boys and girls!

Tobermory Drama Festival Winners

Lochdon Drama 1At the end of January, Ms Bidwell asked the school if anyone would be interested in doing Tobermory Drama Festival this year. Lochdonhead volunteered and decided to write a play called ‘Our Teacher’s a Witch’. We formed a drama club and we rehearsed every Thursday night for 2 months. We also gave up some of our breaks and lunchtimes to practice as well.

Park Primary 3 Authors!

Park PS 1 library visitThis term Primary 3 in Park Primary School have been learning all about stories and books! We visited Waterstones and the Oban Library to find out how books are created and shared. Then we wrote our own stories and published them in book format. On Friday 27th March we hosted a book launch assembly for the rest of the school and lots of parents and other family members who came to share and celebrate our learning.

Wonderful Oscar’s Evening at Furnace!

They arrived in style too, by Limousine!! This was a huge surprise to the children as the local youth club had arranged it and thankfully the parents had kept it a secret.

Wonderful Winning Weaving!

Small Isles Crofting Connections 1In 2012 our school joined the Crofting Connections project and as part of that, we were given a loom. We did lots of work around weaving and even went to collect some lichens to dye our own wool. Then we used the loom to weave a piece of fabric that was green and white and rather rough. Fiona Macdonald (a good weaver that lives close to school) helped us to set it up. Then we decided to have a competition to see who could design the best tartan.
