Today is Victory in Europe Day and a very proud moment in St Andrew’s history as our P6/7 children were invited to attend the memorial service, the reflection on the sacrifice of so many, and the twinning of Bute branch of Royal British Legion with Skipton British Legion.
Curriculum for Excellence came to life for our children in a very real and meaningful way, as they marched, prayed and honoured the fallen and those left to entrust their memory on to a new generation.

“Take One Picture”
The Creative Learning in Schools Team (CAST) have been piloting a project in primary schools in Kintyre, “Take One Picture” installing artworks from the Argyll Collection in six schools to inspire cross curricular creative learning. Pupils and teachers from Carradale, Castlehill, Dalintober, Drumlemble, Gigha and Rhunahaorine Primaries have been working with artists Sian MacQueen, Nicole Heidtke and Stefan Bamberger and dancer Tony Mills to create new work inspired by the artworks, taking part in workshops on conductive printmaking, relief sculpture, dance, digital sculpture, life drawing, shadow puppetry, collage and painting.

Get Creative Music CPDs May 2019
Are you interested in developing your skills in delivering music in the classroom?
As part of the Youth Music Initiative, the Creative Arts in Schools Team (CAST) have run CPD sessions in 2018-9 using Get Creative, a new music resource for primary school teachers full of creative ideas, activities and learning outcomes to enable you to deliver musical activities with your class, regardless of your musical experience.
St Andrew’s Primary School (World Down Syndrome Day)
Our HT Miss Seery introduced the teaching of Makaton and BSL and the children LOVE it. They sing and sign simultaneously and it is wonderful to listen to and watch. It has become a normal part of our school week so we don’t really think it’s out of the ordinary.

St Andrew’s Primary – Family Learning Event
The first Family Learning Event of 2019 was held at St Andrew’s Primary School on Monday 18th March. Parents, grandparents and siblings joined pupils in a fun-filled family line dance session run by our own Miss Walker. Everyone had a marvellous time learning a new skill whilst improving fitness and general health & wellbeing. Pupils and parents are already asking for another session.
The ‘H’ Factor Dunoon School Hostel
Thursday 29th November was the annual show at Dunoon School Hostel. The young people had been busy for quite a while rehearsing for this event.
The evening kicked off with Findlay, the evenings junior presenter introducing our hosts for the evening, Kara & Tristan. They danced a fantastic routine to ‘Twist & Shout’ sung by the very talented Findlay. The Judges came on , this year we had, Rod Stewart, Simon Cowell, Nicole Scherzinger & Robbie Williams. Literacy Fun at St Mun’s Primary
St Mun’s Primary staff and pupils enjoyed a very successful evening when they invited family and friends to an end of term Family Literacy Night.
The evening began with Primary Seven pupils reciting a famous Roald Dahl poem ‘Television’ that warns of the danger of too much TV, whilst reminding us of the joy to be had from books and reading.
Curriculum Development Event
On Wednesday 3rd October, Garelochhead Primary held a curriculum development event in school. The Pupil council and house captains wrote a letter of invitation that was sent to all the local businesses to invite them to come and work with us on 4 questions related to the 4 contexts of learning. 20 representatives from the Ministry of Defence, school health, dental service, accountancy, engineering (Babcock and Jacobs), outdoor learning, the local bus driver, Police Scotland, Pre-5, the local minister and youth worker and parents took part.
BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra Residency in Campbeltown October 2018
The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (BBC SSO) have been working with primary and secondary school pupils across Kintyre as part of a week-long residency in Campbeltown. Pupils have taken part in performances and song writing workshops with BBC SSO musicians, including a special workshop on Gigha. The pupils created their own songs based on Mussorgsky’s “Pictures From an Exhibition”, inspired by characters in the paintings which inspired the music, including the “Troll King” and the “Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks”.

Fyne Homes Competition
Last term, pupils at St Mun’s Primary, Dunoon, were set an unusual family challenge. The school worked in conjunction with Fyne Homes, who were building a new housing development near the school. Families were invited to choose a name for the estate. There was a good response to the competition and a wide range of names were suggested.
Super Staff at North Bute Primary!
Everyone at North Bute Primary is very proud of Mrs McFarlane and Mrs Santos who completed the Great Scottish Run to raise money to help kit out our new Science Classroom and launch the boat that we have been making in partnership with the local boat yard.
Dunoon School Hostel 50th Anniversary 2018
Dunoon School Hostel celebrated 50 years since it opened in 1968. The Committee have worked extremely hard to make Saturday 22 September a day to remember in Hostel History. The parents, ex parents, ex young people and communities of Lochgoilhead and Tighnabruaich did not let us down, throughout the day from 11am to 3pm we had such a fantastic turnout.
Kilchrenan Overrun By Pirates
All local pirates celebrated International Talk Like A Pirate Day by kidnapping all the staff and the children, and taking over the school.
They spent the day practising their pirate vocabulary, discovering their pirate names, designing pirate flags to match their desperate characters, making floating pirate ships and building pirate ships from large boxes so they could sail across the briny deep. There were songs and stories, the making of ships biscuits and a hunt for a lost treasure chest.
We are please to say that all staff and children were returned safely the next day, though strangely tired!
Sandbank visit to Benmore Gardens.
The upper primary classes at Sandbank Primary enjoyed a fabulous day at Benmore Botanical Gardens where they took part in fun, outdoor learning activities inspired by the book ‘The Lost Words’ by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris.
The children were split into two groups. One group worked with the poems in the book and had to guess the subject of the poems by a series of clues in a bag.
Depute First Minister John Swinney Visits Tiree High School
Pupils at Tiree Primary school were delighted to have a visit from the Depute First Minister John Swinney on 20th August.
Mr Swinney MSP was given a very warm welcome by the Tiree High School Pipe Band and Tiree Primary Gaelic Choir.
Mr Swinney MSP kindly took part in a ‘Depute First Minister Question Time’ and answered lots of our questions!
Our guides did a wonderful job showing Mr Swinney MSP around our school and did so with pride!
Farewell Doreen
“After more than 20 years teaching in Dunoon Primary Learning Centre, Doreen MacDonald, will retire on Friday. Doreen has been invaluable in working with children with severe and complex needs and ensuring an inclusive environment for all within Dunoon Primary. Doreen’s support to colleagues and families has also been outstanding. She will be sorely missed by all and we wish her well for the future.”
Edinburgh Celebration Event
Rockfield Primary Gaelic classes were delighted to receive an invitation from The Scottish Book Trust to showcase their hard work and endeavour at a celebration event for The First Minister’s Reading Challenge. The event was held at ‘The Hub’ in Edinburgh on the 20th June and Rachael Deans (Principal Teacher Gaelic), accompanied by Gaelic pupils Rufus Hughes (P5) and Bethan Neil (P4) had a great time sharing their work with the 400 strong audience as well as The First Minister Nicola Sturgeon herself.
Hermitage Primary School – Christian Aid Football Tournament – Hermitage Academy
The Hermitage Primary school football team travelled to Hermitage Academy to take part in the annual Christian Aid football tournament. The boys played very well on the night winning all of their group games, scoring 17 goals and conceding 0. In the semi-final they played Lomond and despite conceding their first goal of the tournament they won the game 7-1. In the final they faced Cardross who they had already beaten in the earlier group stages.

Kirn Eco Committee visit Sky Academy
The Eco Committee from Kirn Primary School, along with some pupils from P4-P7 visited the Sky Academy in Livingston. The pupils were there to film a short news report about the environmental problem of plastics in our oceans and waters.
DEVELOPING OUR OUTDOOR LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AT DUNBEG PRIMARY SCHOOL.
Whilst Dunbeg Primary School is treasured by its local community; its grounds are a treasure in their own right. Over the past seven months pupils, staff and parents have begun to develop them as an accessible, fun and exciting place to learn.
August 2017: The wetland/woodland area hinted at past projects but was thoroughly overgrown and boggy. An inspiring place however with clear educational and well-being potential!
