Dunoon School Hostel celebrated 50 years since it opened in 1968. The Committee have worked extremely hard to make Saturday 22 September a day to remember in Hostel History. The parents, ex parents, ex young people and communities of Lochgoilhead and Tighnabruaich did not let us down, throughout the day from 11am to 3pm we had such a fantastic turnout.
The three members of the Dunoon Argyll Pipe Band and Ross Stewart drummer started off our event in style. The catering staff produced lots of delicious home baking and a super big cake displaying Jodie Strickland’s own design logo proudly displayed on it. This logo was the one we based all our merchandise on. The whole day was a rip roaring success as the Tombola sold out within a short time and the raffle was very busy. During all the fun events we had our young people Kane and Lauren singing beautifully and we are so lucky to have such talented young people!
Meanwhile the Silent Auction begun with fantastic donations from Drimsynie Estates, Andrew & Penny Graeme-Weall, Portavadie, Lochgoil Cruises, Hunters Quay Holiday Village to name but a few. The bidding was constant throughout the day and the people with the highest bids were thrilled to receive their purchases. Donations from parents, ex parents, Staff past and present and the communities of Tighnabruaich & Lochgoilhead for our Tombola and Raffle was phenomenal. Bobby Davy kindly donated amazing coasters engraved with 50th Anniversary.
Mr Jim Torrance and his son spoke about the old days when they lived in Staff quarters in the Hostel and they had produced a film all about Hostel Life. This was shown in the Hobby Room and attracted a big gathering of people.
John Blair donated a Shinty stick engraved for our 50th Anniversary and this has been put on proud display at our entrance. We are extremely grateful to everyone for all donations an look forward to the next 50 years!!
All in all a fantastic sum of £986.61 was raised and a big pat on the back to everyone involved for a wonderful day!!
