“Take One Picture”

The Creative Learning in Schools Team (CAST) have been piloting a project in primary schools in Kintyre, “Take One Picture” installing artworks from the Argyll Collection in six schools to inspire cross curricular creative learning. Pupils and teachers from Carradale, Castlehill, Dalintober, Drumlemble, Gigha and Rhunahaorine Primaries have been working with artists Sian MacQueen, Nicole Heidtke and Stefan Bamberger and dancer Tony Mills to create new work inspired by the artworks, taking part in workshops on conductive printmaking, relief sculpture, dance, digital sculpture, life drawing, shadow puppetry, collage and painting.

BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra Residency in Campbeltown October 2018

The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (BBC SSO) have been working with primary and secondary school pupils across Kintyre as part of a week-long residency in Campbeltown. Pupils have taken part in performances and song writing workshops with BBC SSO musicians, including a special workshop on Gigha. The pupils created their own songs based on Mussorgsky’s “Pictures From an Exhibition”, inspired by characters in the paintings which inspired the music, including the “Troll King” and the “Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks”.

Transition Tuesdays at Tarbert!

Primary 7s from Tarbert, Clachan and Gigha primaries have been making an early start on transition to secondary this year. Each term since August, pupils have spent a day together in Tarbert Academy, getting to know each other and secondary staff. Starting just before Easter, pupils have been spending every Tuesday at Tarbert, with weekly lessons with Mrs Connor in English, Mr Grace in Maths, Mrs Inglis in French and Mr Sandercock in PE.

BMT day at Glenbarr Primary School

On Friday 17th March, Rhunahaorine and Gigha pupils joined pupils at Glenbarr Primary School for a day of BMT (Better Movers and Thinkers). They were joined by Rona Young who led the day. In the morning P1-3 pupils got the chance to have some Active Start together while the p4-7 took part in some BMT activities in the classroom. They tried a variety of activities – Body Lift, Body Parts, Finger Taps, Clap Patterns and Fours on the Spot.

Giggling on Gigha for RND 2017

Children and staff at Gigha Primary School and Pre-Five Unit hosted an afternoon tea comedy club experience for all members of the community. P4 – P7 amazed us with their three minute stand-up routines – some real comic talent in their delivery. Our favourite was, ‘What’s pink and fluffy? Pink fluff!’ Neighbours and friends chipped in with their favourite jokes – there were some real howlers, including the inevitable ‘Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side!’
