Primary 4 11.11.16

Today we held a one minute silence for Remembrance Day. Primary Sevens have been selling poppies all week in the lead up to today.

Next week we will be welcoming our Erasmus guests to Carmondean Primary School. We are very excited and this week we have been working on a challenge to learn more about the countries involved. These will be shown in a display for their arrival. We looked at the country’s national flowers, capital cities, important rivers and flags as well as their language.

We will be beginning our new topic next week, enterprise, whereby the pupils will be choosing their object they wish to make and sell. We will be carrying out surveys and using data handling in order to plan something we hope will sell well. We will discuss the terms ‘profit’ and ‘loss’.

Can all parents please ensure their children do not play on the sandpit at the beginning or end of the day where there is no adult supervision. Thank you for your support with this.

Primary 4 week beginning 31.10.16

We hope you enjoyed the Halloween weekend. We were glad to see so many of you at the school disco. The costumes were fabulous!!

This week we have been focusing on RME and linking this to our science topic about water.
We have been learning about how water is used in religion, particularly in ceremonies and prayer. We are now beginning to look at special buildings in world religions and are discussing and highlighting their features.

We have also begun our guided reading sessions in class. The children are following structured reading sessions that include independent writing tasks, reading with their group and discussions with the teacher about their story. We are setting homework to support the learning happening in the classroom.

After school clubs are now up and running and we would like to remind parents that the children play in the playground until 3:30 pm before clubs start. Clubs finish at 4:30, with the exception of homework club (it has a 4:15 pm finish).

Next week we will be sending out a table detailing the homework up until the winter break. Please refer to this if unsure about tasks. The diaries will still be used as plans may change and maths homework will be added to the diaries.

We hope you all had a fantastic holiday!

We have been busily finishing off our Viking topic this week, presenting our fantastic Big Homework pieces! I have never seen such super work, the effort with these is tremendous and we thank you so much for the time you spent with your child doing this. They have been so enthusiastic about it all and were so excited to share their work.

We also learned about the game the Vikings played in their spare time. Some of us even managed to make our own creative versions of Hnefatafl:

Primary 7 were also finishing their topic this week and came to read us their Japan books. We thought these were brilliant and gave them our feedback on an assessment sheet.

Next week we will be beginning guided reading whereby the children will be given a novel to read pages of at home. Please keep a look out on the blog for accurate homework updates weekly.

Primary 4 week beg 13.10.16

Welcome to the primary 4 blog,

we have had an exciting week in Primary 4. We began our week with a visit from the Vikings! We have learned lots of interesting facts about the lifestyles of Vikings. The children got to hold real artifacts, see weapons and listen to old tales about the Viking gods.

We have also had our Viking Bake Off this week. The children worked in teams to measure ingredients and follow the recipe to make Viking bread. We are grateful to Mr Shanks and Mr Grieg who came in to be our guest judging panel! They gave the children full reviews on their baking and chose a winning team from each class. All the children enjoyed this and loved taking part in this activity.

We want to thank you for attending this weeks Parent’s evenings. We hope you enjoyed looking at the children’s work and our Viking breads.
We hope you enjoy the holidays and we will see you back at school on Tuesday 25th October. We would also like to apologise for the confusion about when big homework is due. We would appreciate it if you could hand in big homework when you return on Tuesday the 25th, not the 21st as we wrote on the letter.
When we return we will be continuing library books but also introducing our guided reading novels. You should expect assigned reading each week. We would be grateful if you could support and listen to your child reading this.

This week ended with a bang! Our Harvest Assembly and all of our hard work was a huge success.

We forgot to also show you photos of us measuring the length of a Viking long boat and pretending we were on a voyage. We couldn’t believe the length of it!!

We are looking forward to meeting parents next week for our first parent’s night of the year! If you have not yet made an appointment, you can book online.

This Monday we are going to be transported back in time with our Viking visitors. They will be showing us battles, ways of life, dress, food and treasures of the times of the Vikings. We will post photos next week to show you the types of things we got up to.

This week, we have completed our Assessment week. Children have tired their hardest to show their capabilities across the curriculum and for this week we have worked in one jotter, to give a snapshot of what they are capable of. We stressed the importance of neatness and best work and these jotters will be available to look at during Parent’s evening.

We also discussed and have been planning our ‘big homework’ for this term. Please see attached if your child has lost their sheet.

We hope you all enjoyed your long weekend. This has been a short week for us and we have begun practising for our school Harvest Assembly. This assembly is not a parent one but one for the children. Please look out for any speaking parts and help your child practise at home.

It was great to see some of you at our Residential information evening. Please if you have any further questions do not hesitate to ask us.

Next week is our assessment week, whereby children will be working in one jotter to give us a snapshot view of their abilities in all areas of the curriculum. These will be on display at Parent’s night for your perusal.

This week we are finishing off our Viking display and will be making our own long boat and our life size Vikings are ready to be placed. As promised, a picture is to follow!

We had a visitor from Scottish water explaining the importance of taking care of water supplies. We learned that in London, there was a fat mass the size of a double-decker bus clogging up the sewers as a result of careless disposal of oil and grease. In amongst this, was baby wipes and other items which should not be flushed, including a living goldfish who was then named ‘POOH’. The children found this very funny.

We will be starting our assembly next week and children will be given words home. Please can you ensure your child practises these. This assembly is an in school assembly for the rest of the classes, not a parent assembly on this occasion.

As it is a two and a half day week when we return, there will be no homework given or expected on the Friday.

This week we are well underway with all of our subjects. We have investigated water and what it is used for. It is great to see all of the tally charts coming in from home detailing water use in our houses. These will be used to compile a class tally chart on water use. They are due in on Monday. We have a visit from Scottish Water planned on Monday and are excited to see what they are going to tell us.

We have been making very scary life size Vikings for our classroom frieze and when they are finished, we will take a picture of them and post it on here to introduce them to you.

Primary 4 1.9.16

It was lovely to see so many parents on Tuesday night, thank you for coming along to see us. If you couldn’t manage, don’t worry, we have put a class newsletter into your child’s bag as well as a spelling homework exemplar to see the kinds of things we will be doing in the first term of Primary 4.

We have had a busy week this week settling into our new class properly. We have discussed and created our class charter based on the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child. We have used this charter to decide upon our classroom rules. The whole school focus has been on SHANARRI, and within this acronym, Primary 4 have focused on Inclusion. We discussed and gave examples of how we were all included in Carmondean Primary School and then illustrated these ideas using pens and coloured paper. We have sent home the charter we decided on to allow you to see what rules we shall be following this year. These are in the children’s words and what they found important to them. Please could you return the tear off slip at the bottom of the rules letter to show your support and understanding of the importance of following these.

We have been learning about colour as one of the visual elements of Art, and even did a science experiment investigating colour!

We have started planning our Viking topic this week and look forward to learning more about it this term. We have had some fantastic ideas from the children such as making Viking food, creating a small viking village and even creating our very own life sized viking! We also thought of a lot of questions we would like to have answered by the end of the topic which has given Miss Donaldson, Miss Miller and myself lots of food for thought when planning the topic.

Children have been given letters home relating to their achievements and interests. We would be extremely grateful if these could be completed and handed back into school.

Please could we ask all items of clothing to have the children’s initials on them for ease of identifying the owners. We have had a few items lost and thankfully found this week, but it would be made easier with names on them somewhere.

Primary 4, 17.6.16

Well done to everyone who applied for the Eco Committee yesterday and Pupil Council today. We have new Committee Rep – well done to Mason Pow, and Depute – Abby Colquoun. I’ll update the Pupil Council results later today.

A massive thank you to everyone for applying. The competition was fierce and I’m glad I wasn’t part of the voting. We had people with campaign banners, leaflets and even mascots. It was an excellent effort from everyone so thank you.

This week letters were handed out for our final trip to Hopetoun House next week where we will be participating in a mini-beast safari and a pond dip as well as some lessons in the outdoors. Please can you bring appropriate clothing this day. Waterproofs, warm clothes and sturdy shoes are necessary but hopefully the weather will pick up a little for us. If possible, perhaps pupils should bring a change of shoes in a plastic bag, but this is not compulsory. If it is raining however, we should get a good glimpse at a huge variety of mini-beasts and pond life as these are the conditions they love!

Please remember to sign both forms and both sides of the A4 form, then return to school before Wednesday 22nd.

I will begin by saying a huge well done to all of the primary 3s, 4s and 5s in their excellent efforts in the school show. It was absolutely fantastic and all your hard work definitely paid off. I was a very proud teacher on Wednesday with what you managed to achieve. I’m sure all of the parents agree!

We began our week with our last community trip – to Morrisons. There, we had a tour around the counters and areas of the store including the fruit and veg isle, where we learned of strange foods and where they came from, the fish isle, where we learned how they gut a fish before sale and also had a tour ‘behind the scenes’. We learned of how the store collected and sorted deliveries and even how the store recycled their packaging! We even got to taste foods from all areas of the store, including pancakes and tiger bread from the bakery, a fruit cocktail from the fresh produce and cheese from the refrigerators. It was very interesting, and we thank Mrs Hendry for organising our visit.

We have been busy presenting our mini-beasts to Primary 4/3 where we showed them our 3D models, plans and leaflets. We are busy learning about power point and how to use it to create quizes and linked slides using the information we wrote in our leaflets.

Good morning all!

We have seen 5 of our caterpillars turn into butterflies and fly away this week. It was very exciting. They were brown and orange and very bright when their wings were open.

This week we had the dress rehearsal for the show ‘Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies’. The children were fantastic, and have learned so many words and songs, you are in for a very impressive afternoon if you plan on coming to see us. Tickets are on sale for £2.50 at the office and it is first come first served. The show takes place next Wednesday at 1:30 pm and 6:30 pm. Children should be dropped back off at the church for 6:15 to be ready for the evening performance. If for any reason your child cannot attend, please let the school know at your earliest convenience.

We made our mini-beasts from junk this week and boy do they look good. It is amazing what the children have produced by themselves and we have had some fantastic ideas for movable parts. Their research and plans were followed and amended as they worked creating their model, allowing them to see the importance of planning and being flexible in their planning when things do not o to plan.

Our organised Day for Change is here and staff and children are arriving in school in their pyjamas as I type! We will let you know the success of the day just as soon as we have final totals.

Our V.I.Is are growing and hopefully be turning into a chrysalis very soon. Here is an update of their progress:

This weekend we want to wish Skye Thayne huge amounts of luck reciting her Burns poem for the finals! We can’t wait to hear how you did on Monday 🙂 Very proud class and teacher but all credits go to you for the fantastic effort and work you have put into it!

Next week we have people from West Lothian Youth Foundation coming in to talk about the work they do within the community. This is as a result of the letters we sent to Livingston F.C.

Children were given letters about our trip a week on Monday (16.5.16) to Dynamic Earth. This was as part of the Golden Ticket win we had whereby the school was permitted free entry to Dynamic Earth for trips. We are very excited about this. Please ensure your child has returned the purple form to permit them to go.

We are holding a small talent contest next Friday in order to choose one act for the final talent show in June, held by our House Captains. We are all very excited about this and preparing our acts. It’s going to be hard to choose just one from such a talented class!

Primary 4, 5.4.16

What an interesting week we have had with lots and lots going on!

We had two V.I.Ps in our classroom and two V.I.Is… We will begin with the V.I.Ps. After we sent our letters out to the community, we had three responses to our letters, one from PC McMahon who will be visiting us in the next couple of weeks and Mrs Vance and Mr Cowan, parents of children in our class. I wish to take this opportunity to thank you both for coming in to chat to us and tell us more about the part you play in your communities. We found it fascinating and asked lots of questions. Both visits led to fantastic discussions afterwards with the children too. We did some research on John Newland (after a few google searches for his correct name) and found out a little more about his part in the Bathgate community and their Galaday. We are looking forward to finding out more about free pool too! It was very good of you both to give up your free time and we thank you.

Also, today I received an e-mail from Livingston F.C in response to the letters sent to them. The children do not know this yet but they are going to try to send a player for a meet and greet with the class, as well as someone who can explain a little more about what they do in our community. We shall see if any of the children read the blog and mention it tomorrow!

Now for the V.I.Is…(Very Important Insects) we have been lucky enough to acquire 35 worms and 5 caterpillars to help us study mini-beasts for our topic. We have set up a worm farm at the back of the classroom and have been watching them wriggle their way down into the soil. The caterpillars have been very lazy so far, at times we have had to check whether they are still alive, but all 5 are doing well and have grown so much over just 4 days. We are excited to see what they will look like as butterflies.

Next week we are off Monday and Tuesday, and on Friday we have our Day for Change. Children will be fundraising for UNICEF on this day and are looking forward to not having to get ready for school. They tell me they are going to roll out of bed and come in wearing their pyjamas they slept in!

We have a talent show at the end of the school year being organised by the house captains. We will be holding a contest in the classroom very soon to decide who goes through to the final, so be thinking about a talent you can showcase if you wish to take part! Watch out for reminders in diaries to find out when this will be.

We have also been working on the acting and songs for our school show with lots of practice dates in the diary. Costume letters will also be coming out soon so please look for these in bags. If there are any problems with any aspect of the costume required, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us and we will do our best to help out.

What a busy week it has been, getting into our new topics and recovering from the fantastic Auchengillan!

The children were excellent and their behaviour and manners were commented on by everyone, from the kitchen staff to the outdoor staff as well as the administration staff so a big well done to everyone who came.

We got very muddy on the last day as it had been raining prior to our visit. We had a very quick change before heading onto the bus to go home. See below for a few sneaky pics! We have made a video of all of the photos taken by staff which the children will see very soon.

Whilst we were away at Auchengillan, the people who stayed with Mrs Wallace did a fantastic job of organising Primary 4’s event, ‘Day for Change.’ This will take place on the 6th of May whereby children can mark the event by getting dressed in their pyjamas and slippers to come to school. If they wish they can bring in a donation of change, as much or as little as they want.

It has been a busy week for our staff and colleagues this week in Bulgaria too! I hope you have all been catching up with their activities on the F.L.A.G Blog page. In class we have been reading it every morning and discussing similarities and differences as well as talking about their experiences.

Look out for our newsletter for this term. It highlights up and coming events, current topics as well as reminders. We will be welcoming a few new visitors to our class next week as well as part of our Science topic, Mini-beasts. Caterpillars and worms will be making their way into their enclosures at some point for us to observe over the next few weeks.

This week we sent off letters to members of our community to invite them in to chat about their role in our community. We sent ten letters to various people the children considered to be important in our community and have one visit booked in for next week already! Fingers crossed more people reply to make our learning all the more interesting and relevant.

This week we went to see the dress rehearsal of the P7 show Hosanna. Those of you who are going to see it will love the songs and the acting! Well done P7! We will be beginning our show practice next week ready for our production of ‘Robin Hood and the Sherwood Hoodies’.

We had Mrs Henry in from Morrisons yesterday giving us a taster of some Scottish foods. We tried things like potato scones, oatcakes, tablet, Ayrshire ham, scotch pies, and cheddar cheese among lots of others! We were very adventurous with our choices and most people in the class tried everything. We then found out where each piece of food was from in Scotland.

We are looking forward to hearing the class talks over the next couple of weeks we have had power points, drawings, photographs, books and tickets as some of the materials brought in to accompany our talks. They look very interesting so far!

As of Monday our timetable will be changing slightly. We have indoor PE on a Monday now instead of a Wednesday. Could you ensure appropriate kit be brought on this day. Outdoor PE remains a Tuesday.

Next week, we will be supporting Sport Relief. In order to do this, the P6’s who are organising will be holding a bake sale on Thursday 17th. The cakes will range between 20 and 50p. If you wish to contribute, they will be collecting baking donations next week.

On Friday the 18th to mark the event we will be having a dress down day where children should come to school dressed in sporty clothes. A 50p donation is required for dress down and all proceeds go to Sport Relief. On Friday break time, there will be a beat the teacher challenge which children can pay 50p to take part in also.

What an exciting day we had for World Book Day and some excellent costumes and characters from our favourite books! We took part in a class quiz to see how much we knew about famous books just for a bit of fun in celebrating World Book Day and customised bookmarks to make them our own.

This week we also had fun in health, ordering drinks depending on the amount of sugar we thought they had in them. We were extremely surprised when we seen the results. We have been learning about the effects of sugar on our teeth and are awaiting a visit from the Dental Nurses who have kindly agreed to come in to visit us and give us a talk. This will be followed up nicely next term with healthy eating.

Reading: apologies to the blue group, I forgot to hand out the book review sheets on Monday and therefore, they sat on my desk all week.

This week Reading homework for everyone will be a book review. Apologies again.

Class talk due to be handed in, the following week we will work our way through hearing them.

Primary 4 25.2.16

This week we have been busy practising our assembly for the rest of the school and our parents. We hope if you came to watch it, you enjoyed it and learned a lot. We have loved showing off all of our work and are very proud of how much we have learned so far!

Our science electricity challenge has finally been completed this afternoon with only a few more groups to report back. We have self and peer assessed our ability to make working circuits which include wires, buzzers, lights, batteries and motors. Our challenge stated we had to create a house with upstairs and downstairs which included working circuit components. It was up to us what we used the components for. We had a motorised revolving chair, a washing machine, a revolving ballerina for a jewellery box. Our creativity in this challenge really was super! Please remember next Thursday we have a dress down day where we have been asked by Primary 3 to come in dressed as a character from a book. Everyone has their thinking caps on with this one! Even the teachers!

Primary 4 have to organise the Day for Change very soon. If anyone has any ideas, please add a comment below. In the past we have had a change of disguise, change of hair do, wear our clothes backwards for a change, change of time (come into school in our PJs) so any other ideas are welcome!

Thank you to all parents who attended parent’s night over the last two nights. It was great to see so many of you again and the conversations had by all were extremely helpful. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support this year.

This week we said goodbye to Miss Leyland who had been in our class since we came back to school in January. The children put together a lovely card for her and wished her good luck on her next journey in learning and in life.

This week we received an e-mail with further clues for our travels of Scotland’s main cities. We put together the clues and found we were in Huntly, near Aberdeen. We have been researching the oil and fishing industries, the main rivers, Dee and Don and also the famous silver granite buildings!
